The Hometown #1

Unravel Me

Rate this book
She’s the black sheep of a wealthy family; he’s a down-to-earth farmer’s son. She’s running from her past; he’s building his future. It’s just a summer fling...that’s what she keeps saying anyway.

Audrey

I was born an Elson, which meant two I had more money than I could ever spend, and my entire life was planned before I could even walk.
As the black sheep, I’ve spent my life struggling under the weight of my family's expectations. But marrying a high-profile man was supposed to be my ticket to belonging - until he pulled the rug out from under me.
Still, I never doubted my path. Until a ruggedly handsome stranger found me broken and crying on my rooftop.
He became my secret and my undoing.

Rhett
After my dad passed, only one choice made sense - stay in my small hometown of Roseville and be the man my family needed.
It’s been ten years—but I had my patch of land, my friends, a business that was finally finding its feet, and a dog my sister insisted I get so I don’t “die alone.”
But then Audrey came along. The moment I saw her, my simple life got complicated.
Audrey was the kind of woman a man made plans for, the kind who made you dream of something bigger. But she was from a world I couldn’t touch—one I clearly didn’t belong in.
I had nothing to offer her, not really. But that didn't stop me from giving her everything I had.

Unravel Me is book one in The Hometown Series [interconnected stand-alones]. It's a steamy strangers-to-lovers, opposites attract, small town romance!

My favorite book of 2025 hands down. I have been reading small town romance books for a while now and every book that I have read up until this one was a 4 star read for me. This book had me hooked and intrigued from the first page until the very last. Rhett and Audrey’s relationship is beautiful, not perfect, but is any relationship? There’s also a dog named Mabel that will absolutely melt your heart. UGH. If you’re looking for a recommendation THIS IS THE BOOK TO READ.

✨️ all opinions are my own ✨️
First and foremost, thank you so much to Katherine for the immense amount of joy I felt when I was selected as an ARC reader.

Guys. I fear this book has awakened something in me. A thirst for books with small town, countrymen with muscular, tattooed arms who like to dance and show a girl a good time at the county fair. Rhett Anderson, the man that you are🤌🏻 Darlin'??? I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE, let me hop in the bed of your pick-up truck. And "baby" is such an underrated pet name. The way that Rhett's entire state of mind and way of life was turned upside down when he met Audrey is the kind of content I'm looking for when reading an MMCs POV.

Katherine has such an amazing ability to make her FMCs relatable on such a deep, personal level. Audrey has a complicated family dynamic. Her parents aren't warm, fuzzy, or affectionate. They are distant, cold, and emotionally manipulative. They are willing to put business above the needs and happiness of their daughter. When Audrey meets Rhett, he shows her everything that she's been missing out on in life. Everything that she has ever wanted but never knew existed.

"He saved me, but I don't think he knows that."

This book really spoke to me in a lot of ways. I felt a kinship to Audrey due to her relationship with her family and also because I know what it feels like to think it's too late to start over when all of your life plans burst into flames. But sometimes you need to fall apart (or unravel, if you will) in order to pick up the pieces. Sometimes, starting over is the best way for you to move forward, even if the path ahead is uncertain.

And, of course, a Katherine Bitner book wouldn't be complete without a dog. Mabel the bloodhound stole my heart (and brought me to tears during a certain scene. *she doesn't die, I REPEAT, SHE DOESN'T DIE)

Last but not least, do yourself a favor and grab your copy of Unravel Me on 2/25

Rhett is top tier >>>

description

Kk. So if you wanted a Sweet Home Alabama meets The Notebook romance book with a DREAMY country man, this is it for you.

Rhett is top tier (I know I said that already but I need you to understand that and REALLY KNOW THAT) and this is my favorite read of 2025 thus far.

"But Kayla, didn't you read Onyx Storm?!"
Yes, yes, I did. And it was phenomenal. But still, this book is my favorite read of 2025.

Audrey’s personal growth and journey was one of my favorites because it wasn’t Rhett who “fixed” her but more so he helped her find the path she needed for self-discovery and growth when it came to healing from her own traumas. And a MASSIVE shoutout to the friendship between her and Penny. I cannot wait for Penny's book!!!!

Katherine’s growth as a writer has been such a delight to witness. Her ability to break my heart, repair my heart and give me butterflies is always a welcoming feeling.

brb going to wait for a physical copy so I can reread it immediately & annotate <3

ARC Review of Unravel Me by Katherine Bitner🪚🐶👩🏻‍💼🔨💰📚💘💍

This book? Absolute magic. Give me a small-town carpenter with tattooed arms, a soft spot for dancing, and a pickup truck, and I will fall in love. Rhett Anderson, sir, you have ruined me. The way he looks at Audrey? The way he calls her baby? Devastating.

Audrey’s life was perfectly planned—until it wasn’t. Losing everything was never part of the deal, but neither was Rhett. He gives her a taste of the love, warmth, and home she never knew she was missing. Their story isn’t just in the big moments, but in the quiet ones—the county fair, slow mornings, and making treats for his sweet dog, Mabel (who wrecked me, by the way).

Katherine Bitner doesn’t just write love stories; she writes journeys. Southern charm, deep longing, and finding exactly what you need in the last place you’d expect—this book has it all. Heartfelt, swoony, and unforgettable.

Thank you, #Katherinebitner, for sending me my #gifted (free) copy.

This is book one in the #hometownseries, and I am already obsessed and can not wait for the next book! This book has all the feels of a small town romance (think Sweet Home Alabama), and I loved how the MMC is a Carpenter. I loved how all the characters were so relatable, and the character development was done with perfection. I just found my new favorite romance series after being in a romance hangover from The Rebel Blue Ranch series. UNRAVEL ME comes out next week, so make sure you get your copy! 💕

The story of Rhett and Audrey is absolutely heartwarming, and the sad eyed lovable dog finishes it off with a big bow on top!

We’ve seen this story before, but never like this. Rich and successful woman who has spent her whole life pleasing others and shaping herself into their idea of who she should be, meets a good ol’ country boy, who lives a simple life, works with his hands, and loves his mama.

But this one is done with such class. Such depth is added to the characters and such a harrowing journey of self discovery and finding out true love was never meant to be conditional is sprinkled in, that this is so much more then the romance stories you’ve read before.

You will really feel for the characters, mourn their losses, cheer for their successes, and above all yearn for the culmination of our characters being so much more together than they could ever be apart.

Grab a cozy quilt, a warm beverage, and ideally a floppy eared dog to warm your feet, as you turn the page and allow your heart to be captured by Rhett, Audrey, and Mabel.

This one gave me all the swoony, feel good, Sweet Home Alabama vibes. Listen, I am an absolute sucker for a cinnamon roll, country boy and Rhett fit this profile completely! Aubrey grew up as a rich, city girl and is a little lost after her engagement ended. She meets Rhett and something about him makes her re-evaluate her entire life. He brings out a different side of her that she didn't know she had. There was tons of character growth for her and I loved it. Rhett & Audrey come from completely different lives but together, they are home. The small moments between these two are really what make my heart swoon. I absolutely loved them together. Throw in a cute dog too and you have the perfect love story!

This was my first book by Katherine Bitner and it most definitely won't be the last! I loved her writing style & storytelling so much.

Thank you so much Katherine for this ARC! This one releases February 25.

This story was so pure and good and beautiful.

Audrey is well off. She has money, a good job, a house, a fiancé…until she loses most of it.

A chance meeting with a down-to-earth carpenter named Rhett is the last thing she needs or wants, which is why she tells herself it will only be for the summer.

The passion between these two characters was brought to life in all of the small moments. The county fair rides, slow mornings together, and making treats for Rhett’s lovable dog, Mabel.

I love how Bitner immersed us in the two worlds that could not have been more different. The Southern charm, falling hard, and dreams come to fruition were so wholesome to see on the page. She really took these characters through a journey, one that doesn’t disappoint in the end!

Audrey and Rhett are the most unlikely of couples who meet in the most unlikely of ways: on the roof of Audrey’s building after her carefully assembled future with her wealthy fiancé falls to pieces in one afternoon. To Audrey’s embarrassment — and Rhett’s delight — they keep running into each other afterwards. Audrey is considering accepting a promotion and starting over in a city closer to her well-to-do parents. But after a few dates with Rhett, she can’t deny that they have chemistry — or that he makes her feel like who she always has been under the facade her family has created.
This was a low-spice, heartwarming romance with likable and well-developed characters. The descriptive details of the setting and character traits in the story are such that, while there are a few stereotypical elements present, this book stands out from any other I’ve read this year. The dialogue is snappy and engaging without being unrealistic. I highly recommend this book, and I can’t wait to read its sequel and more of Katherine Bitner’s work.

I felt right at home in this little small town in NC 🩵
I loved Audrey and Rhett! From their first meeting they had a strong connection and when they finally saw each other again it just continued to grow. As Audrey was getting over her broken engagement, Rhett showed her the love and care that she hadn’t realized she’d been missing. Even while coming from very different lives/families and not looking for anything serious, they gave each other exactly what they needed. The “opposites attract” in this one was so good - rich city girl from NY and small town country boy 🤭 Despite their differences, they built a really sweet relationship!
*honorable mention to Mabel the dog (because duh) and the blue hydrangeas!

I LOVED this book. It was sweet, it was spicy, it has a lovable dog, and it has a farmhouse I want to live in. Rhett Anderson is the perfect book boyfriend, and I fear I’ll never recover from him.

I also loved Audrey’s growth. You’re rooting for her from the start, and I’m so happy she gets her HEA.

UNRAVEL ME did just that—it unraveled me at my core and made me feel seen as a person.

A person who is anxious about making mistakes regarding their future—like Audrey
A person who would rather work alone to unwind than ever burden people with my problems—like Rhett
A person who has a hard time seeing the good in herself and how much good she brings to the world—like so many of us do.

Audrey & Rhett have all of these traits, and so, so, so many more.

The way their individual journeys and love stories come to life on the page doesn’t feel forced. It doesn’t feel like this author found two popular tropes and FORCED the story to be told just because that’s what the world might want in this day and age. This is a love story between a very well-off woman who has everything she could ever want in life and a blue-collar man who doesn’t know how to give her what he thinks she needs. This love story comes together naturally and authentically while still giving each character their own story apart from each other.

It’s truly beautiful the way Bitner weaves these two very different characters from completely different worlds into a love story for ages.

Audrey and Rhett have stolen my whole heart, and I am so honored to have had the pleasure of getting this story in my hands before the world did. Thank you, Katherine, for always trusting me with your words, your stories, and your heart. I’m so proud of you, and I can’t wait to see where you take us in Penny’s story!

PS: Please give us more Mabel in book two!!

Giving full on Hallmark movie, but in a very weird way? Honestly did not like the fact that the FMC just fully uprooted her life to mold into the man that she loves. And not to mention that the point of conflict in this story is literally NOT a point of conflict? Like she literally turned down the promotion to stay in NC with you and you BREAK UP W HER??? Bruh you literally just saw how toxic her family was and you're in YOUR feelings?? Compartmentalize and get over it.

A Swoony, Southern Love Story That Stole My Heart

Dedication: I dedicate this book to my mom, who taught me to never settle for anyone who doesn't love you for exactly who you are. And if you haven't found that person yet, there are always book boyfriends. (May I present to you Rhett Anderson)

If you’re a sucker for a small-town romance with a country boy who falls first—and falls hard—then this book is a must read.

From the moment Rhett lays eyes on Audrey, his world tilts on its axis. He may not have a trust fund or a last name that turns heads, but he’d give her the world if she let him. And oh boy, does he try. He’s the kind of MMC who will call her “baby” in a way that ruins you, hold her hand at a county fair, and dance with her in the middle of his kitchen just because. He’s patient and steady, the warmth Audrey never knew she was missing.

Katherine Bitner’s writing is magic. She doesn’t just give you a romance—she gives you a journey. The slow, quiet moments between Audrey and Rhett are what truly made my heart melt. And don’t even get me started on the third-act breakup. Devastating. My heart broke for Audrey, and I may or may not have shed a few tears. But the way everything came back together? Perfection!

It’s Sweet Home Alabama meets a love that feels like home. I smiled the entire way through and loved every second of Rhett and Audrey’s journey. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Swoony line:
“You can tell people I'm whoever you want, as long as you know I'm yours.”

“…when he stopped my tears on that rooftop that night, something in me healed. “

I received an ARC copy and wanted to leave an honest review.

4.5 ⭐ An amazing opposites attract, small town romance read that's perfect for readers who enjoyed Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez 💙

⭐ Rating Criteria ⭐

💙 Plot:

When I was a few chapters into this, the first thing that came to mind was that the plot somehow reminded me of Part of Your World - of course, it wasn't exactly the same, but it had certain similarities. Further into it, the story began shaping up like that one more and more, and I wasn't sure how to feel about it because I really didn't like PoYW at all. However, now that I’m done, I can absolutely say for certain that I liked this way more.

The whole story was just sweet, really. I also think I understood Audrey's actions and decisions before that third-act thing. But, like most romance reads, all she had to do was communicate - that's the one and only flaw of this story.

💙 Characters:

I loved how the characters were written in this story ❤️ Thankfully, the opposites attract trope in this one wasn't overdone - I know there's a class difference between the main characters but it's not so in-your-face in terms of their attitudes. I just liked how this was written in a way that didn't necessarily focus on that difference, and instead emphasized their relationship and its development - which was so sweet.

I was mad at the whole third-act break-up thing because it was obviously hard on both parties, and having to witness them feel shitty again like they did before meeting was heartbreaking. Still, I’d say it was worth it because of their happy ending.

I will say, I would’ve wanted a much more solid closure with her family, but I think it’s more realistic like this. Anyway, this is Audrey’s new beginning, and while it won’t always be sunshine and rainbows, at least she’s paving her own life now and I commend her for that.

💙 Writing Style:

I think the writing was great - I have no comments. I also think the story was paced and structured well. It was a pretty easy read given that I finished it in a few hours.

💙 Overall:

I genuinely really liked this book ❤️ I apologize for the constant mention, but after PoYD, I swore off reading books with similar plots/tropes as that one because of how much I disliked it. But, I'm so happy that I took a chance on this because it turned out amazingly.

Since this is a series, I’m going to be looking forward to the next books to come. I noticed that Audrey hasn’t met Kylan yet, so we’ll probably see that in the coming books, right?

Thank you to Katherine for letting me be a part of her ARC team, and giving me the opportunity to share my honest review of this ARC 🥰💙

#Review: *Unravel Me* - Katherine Bitner [16+]
4.5/5✨
2/5🌶️

I received this book a while now, but only now I had the chance and some spare time to read it. Thank youuu so much Katherine for accepting me to be part of your team for this one!

Audrey had just found out that her soon to be husband was cheating on her. That turned her world upside down but she was sure she didn't wanna continue with marrying him. Only after finding out about this, when she was expressing her anger for Jackson, Aud met handsome Rhett. He was working at an apartment in the same building as Aud stayed in.

It was definitely a love at first sight situation, because both of them felt attracted to one another. But Aud had her heart broken just a few minutes ago and couldn't act on her attraction. But they had the chance to see each other again and, from there on, the tension just kept on growing.

This story had the perfect example of opposites attact. Aud was part of the wealthy world and Rhett was a that kind of guy who got by with each paycheck. But that wasn't a factor in their case. It only opened Aud's eyes and made her realize she can be happy with less, if she has the love of her man.

I liked how humble and calm Rhett was. He fell head over heels for Audrey, after waiting for love for a long while. I can say that Rhett's dog, Mable, was the sweetest! She also fell for Aud right away and was super attached to her. I understood the pain Aud's was going through, being ignored even by her own parents, who were only interested in keeping their imagine clean and having their business thriving. Aud was just a strong woman and the break up from Jackson and spending time with Rhett will only inspire her in what she wanted in life.

A story about finding the right path in life, about keeping the right people, the ones who want your happiness and support your dreams. A self searching road for Audrey, who found more than she ever thought of: her true love and the opportunity in reviving an old passion.

As a former resident of a Small Town™️, I typically am not a fan of small town romances. But, as a North Carolinian, I am obligated to read books set in NC. I think I’m just conditioned to Raise Up, idk, take it up with Petey Pablo. And, as with Lucky Penny, Katherine Bitner strikes the chord so it rings true, and that’s all that matters to me.

First a disclaimer: I read these books out of order. Technically they are standalones and can be read independently, but there are references to characters and their stories in both books. That said, they can be read own their own/out of order and you’ll be just fine.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into it!

This book is somewhere between Sweet Home Alabama (but less campy) and The Notebook (but way happier). When we meet Audrey she is freshly heartbroken and drinking her sorrows away. She can barely see directly in front of her, much less what her new future will hold. This is the state she is in when she meets Rhett.

Rhett reminded me very much of young Josh Lucas in Sweet Home Alabama, right down to the dimples. I’m not sure who Audrey reminded me of, as she seemed so lost and caught up in being what other people wanted her to be. And maybe that was the point.

Where Audrey had been committed the last five years, Rhett had been anything but. Neither are completely honest with their intentions, mainly to themselves. However, we get the benefit of dual POV (my fave!) so we know what’s up the whole time. 😉

This sounds like I’m setting it up for a miscommunication trope, which is the bane of my existence, but truly, it is more about the development of the characters than it is about the lack of communication.

And the character development was definitely there! Both MCs had lessons in learning who you are, loving yourself as you are, and being true to yourself – before fully showing up in a relationship and reciprocating those feelings for someone else.

I’m not going to say this makes me a lover of small town romances, but I’m definitely a fan of Katherine Bitner, which means she stays on my insta-buy list and I can’t wait to read the next in the series. Four stars from me!

I was given the wonderful opportunity to ARC read this book and I really enjoyed this book. It has short chapters so of course, I felt like I was flying through this book and I really did, I finished it so fast because it is just that good.

Rhett and Audrey meet on the rooftop of her apartment after her engagement ends and he's finishing up some work on an apartment. They end the night after talking with a goodbye never to see each other again (or so they thought.) A few days later, Audrey and her best friend go to a bar and Rhett just so happens to be there, they dance and then after hearing that Rhett isn't single she runs off. Fast forward another few days and he sees her again when she's moving. They clear the air and they go to dinner.

As time moves on, the two of them start spending whenever they can together. They eventually go on a trip because she doesn't want to hide him anymore. Well, things don't go so great but it all works out in the end. Audrey finally decides what she wants out of life and Rhett always wanted her to be a part of his forever. You don't expect these two to work out in the beginning but slowly you start to realize that they are made for each other.

"Unravel Me" is available on February 25th. This book is a lot about finding out who you truly want to be after what you thought your life was not. I highly recommend picking this book up and giving it a shot.

“You think I want a big life, but I don’t want anything but this. I just want this. I want your loud, crazy dog. And your family. And you.” - Audrey
