About the author

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

I was only 29 pages away from finishing this.
I was just too lazy to update after each reading session, especially that I fell asleep each time 😅
Carue was the hero of the day for me, this duck really did great.
I liked how the girls came out of the fire swinging and same for Zoro, that was something to see.
I am still gonna read this very slowly until I reach uncharted waters (volumes that I didn't watch the anime episodes for) and probably by that point I'll read this much faster.

This manga does better at channeling my inner ten-year-old--including reading comics mostly targeted at boys--than any other one that I'm reading. Some of the body humor doesn't quite land anymore, exploding boogers or whatever. Aside from that, I'm a happy audience for the cartoon slapstick, silly double takes, innocent absurdity, and good-humored energy of One Piece.

بلیک اسنایدر در کتابِ فیلمنامه‌نویسیِ «گربه را نجات بده!» که یک فصل کاملش را به تاکید بر اهمیتِ نوشتن یک خلاصه‌قصه‌ی تک‌جمله‌ای قوی در موفقیتِ یک سناریو اختصاص داده است، در این‌باره می‌گوید: با وجودِ همه‌ی فیلم‌ها، سریال‌ها، رادیو، اینترنت، موسیقی، صدها کانالِ تلویزیونی، مجله‌ها و مسابقه‌های ورزشی که در هر آخرهفته قابل‌دسترس هستند، یک خواننده باتجربه فقط حدود ۳۰ ثانیه برای تصمیم‌گیری درباره‌ی چیزی که می‌خواهد بخواند، فرصت دارد و این عددِ ناچیز در رابطه با طرفدارانِ نه چندان پروپاقرصِ مانگا کاهش پیدا می‌کند. من در ۳۰ ثانیه عاشق وان پیس شدم و الان سه ماهه درگیرشم.

این مانگا که تک‌تک کلیشه‌ها و کهن‌الگوهای مانگاهای شوننِ هم‌تیروطایفه‌اش را بدون سرپیچی یا انحراف از آنها شامل می‌شود، گرچه دقیقا در بینِ نوآورانه‌ترین و ساختارشکن‌ترین مانگاهای سال‌های اخیر جای نمی‌گیرد، اما با تسلطش روی بُنیادی‌ترین خصوصیات معرف این ژانر که آن را پُرطرفدار کرده است و کوبیدنِ مُهر شخصی خودش روی بدوی‌ترین و رایج‌ترین مکانیک‌های داستانگویی، به نتیجه‌ای که به‌طرز آشنایی بیگانه است دست پیدا کرده است. واضح‌ترین نقطه‌ی قوتِ وان‌پیس دنیاسازی و جها‌ن‌پردازی باکیفیتش که آب از لب و لوچه‌ی خواننده سرازیر می‌کنند هستند.


مشکلی که با وان پیس دارم، مسئله‌ای هست که در مرز و محدوده ژانر شونن چنان درهم‌تنیده که حتی به راحتی نمیتونم بیان کنم که قضیه چی هست، استیون کینگ در فرایند نوشتن The Stand، که احتمالاً از بهترین داستان‌های تمام ادبیاته، می‌گوید: «به جایی در کتاب رسیدم که آن‌قدر شخصیت‌‌های داستان زیاد شده بودن که حتی منم که خالق‌شون بودم نمی‌دونستم باهاشون چیکار کنم، مردد بودم و هیچ ایده‌ای نداشتم چطوری خطوط داستانی شخصیت‌ها قرار هست جلو بره، در نهایت تصمیمی گرفتم»، تصمیم استیون کینگ چی بود به نظرتون؟
شاید درست حدس زده باشید، کشتن تمام شخصیت‌ها.

آقای اودا سنسی علاقه‌ای به کشتن پرتاگونیست‌های وان‌پیس نداره، نکته اساسی اینجاست، شخصیت‌های فرعی هم در وان پیس از داستان حذف نمی‌شوند، حداقل تا جایی که من خوندم، وقتی عنصر غیرقابل پیش‌بینی بودن از داستان و آرک شخصیتی اعضای داستان حذف بشه، مخاطب دیگه در مقابل نتایج دراماتیک و احساسی داستان هیچ ترسی نداره و با خیال راحت می‌تونه بشینه، حتی دراز بکشه و از خوندن همچین اثری لذت ببره؛ به نظرم همچین انتخابی مزایا و محدودیت‌هایی برای اثر ایجاد می‌کنه که براساس نوع نگاه مخاطب ممکن است کفه ترازو به هر سمتی سنگینی کنه.

There's dumb and then there's "everyone should be dead and the series over" dumb. Luffy is the latter in this one.

You do need to read this one to understand some of the plot going forward, but know that everyone's survival depends on the author keeping them alive for no reason while Luffy is an idiot.. for also no reason. I guess those cancel each other out, but I did want to hurt Luffy most of the time.

An attack on one of the giants lands Luffy on the top suspect list, as volume 14 kicks off with straight up action. Luffy proves he doesnt back down from any opponent, no matter how big. Meanwhile on the island, the Strawhats and Vivi are captured one by one. The foe in the shadows introduces himself as Mr. 3, a Baroque Works agent. He and his partner, Ms. Goldenweek, are on Little Garden to capture Vivi as well as collect bounties on the two Giants, Dory and Broggy.

The pacing in this volume wastes no time as we get straight to the action. Luffy and Usopp have to take out the two new villains as well as Mr. 5 and Ms. Valentine (who we met last volume). The stakes are raised as a time limit is placed on the lives of the others, except Sanji. Mr. 3's strange views on art is played well into his fighting style and you are left with a flashy, yet whacky battle. Usopp steals all scenes with his goofy antics and funny dialogue. Rather than prolong the sub arc like previous arcs, Oda finishes the fights in the very last pages, leaving the Little Garden wrap up for volume 15.

Art, as always, never wavers, while Eichiro Oda tells a more simplistic story this time around. This in no way takes away from One Piece's epicness. The mess the crew finds themselves in feels hopeless right down to the end. Youll be biting your nails til you get to the finish line. Characters are great, as always, with the strategic Mr. 3 taking center stage. His ego and self confidence delivers a villain you really want Luffy to pummel. In the end this volume serves up an exciting chapter in the Baroque Works arc!

One Piece, Vol. 14 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (118–126) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon continues the Little Garden Arc. Baroque Works agents Mr. 3 and Miss Golden Week are on the island in search of the Straw Hats and the bounties on the giants' heads. With the help of Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, they rig the giants' fight. After thousands of draws, Broggy strikes Dorry down and, while weeping over his friend's body, is captivated by Mr. 3's wax-creation powers.

Roronoa Zoro, Nami and Nefeltari Vivi are captured and placed on a large candle with a rotating top, designed by Mr. 3 to slowly turn them into wax figures by covering them in vaporized wax. Monkey D. Luffy, Usopp and Vivi's ostrich-sized duck, Karoo, come to save them. Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine chase Usopp and Karoo, while Luffy fights Mr. 3 and sends him flying into the jungle. Unfortunately, Luffy is no match for Miss Golden Week and her hypnotic paintings. However, joining forces, Luffy, Usopp and Karoo destroy the wax structure and free their friends.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. On their mission to bring Princess Vivi to Arabasta, the Straw Hats land at Little Garden, which is actually a huge island that is still stuck in the prehistoric era. However, there are more than dinosaurs on this island, as the crew soon finds out when they encounter two giants that have been locked in combat for over 100 years and four high-ranking Baroque Works members is out for the bounty on the giants' heads not to mention the Straw Hats crew.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 14 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

What kind of game the Baroque Works agents played with the blue giant Brogy, felt really bad for him.

The adventure on this strange island continues as Luffy and his crew look for the unknown menace that got in the way of a century-old honour-filled battle. The Baroque Works agents also crawl out of the woods and present themselves to further annoy the crews' progress and the battle that follows is wild and ludicrous in many ways.

As usual, love when the story stops fucking around and locks in. Love Usopp utilizing his ranger abilities to clever effect- he is always great when he accepts that he works the best as a long-range support role. We also see more of Luffy's mysterious emotional intuition that gives him an almost supernatural ability to figure out how to take out an enemy even when he is very oblivious in other moments. I constantly admire that Eiichiro Oda's fights scenes have some kind of logistical logic or else emotional meaning attached to them.

C'est Mr 3 qui porte ce volume, ce mec me rend hilare. Luffy, que tout le monde pense susceptible à l'hypnose (parce qu'il est trop con) se révèle le moins influençable, justement parce qu'il fait confiance à ses instincts : ça fonctionne bien face à des ennemis plus stratèges que jamais. Ce volume, c'est aussi le début des moments "Mr Prince" de Sanji, quand il s'en va vivre sa petite aventure tout seul et finit par sauver tous ses amis : ça fait partie de mes dynamiques préférées dans ce début de saga.
