---------- [READING ORDER NOTE: Although books 6 & 7 are clearly indicated on the covers, the events of Defender (book 7) take place 4 years prior to those in Guardian (book 6). So to follow the story events in order, it is recommended that book 7 (Defender) be read PRIOR to book 6 (Guardian).]
Born and raised in Ontario, C. L. Scholey developed her passion for writing through her love of reading books as a child. Her first book was contracted in Oct 2009 the very same month her first grand son was born. C. L. Scholey still lives in Ontario, in a rural community with her husband and daughter.
From the author: Hello, I'm Connie! Now that we've met how about I tell you a little about me? I love to write, it's like having a super power.
I was born and raised in Ontario...yes I'm Canadian, no I don't live in an igloo, no I've never pet a polar bear, but I have run into a few black bears, seen wolves, moose, coyotes and I think there's a hundred pound squirrel in my attic.
I spend as much time as I can get away with looking for rocks in Bancroft. When I'm not in Bancroft I live in a small town, so people know me when they see me. Some ask me what I'm working on--some even ask me in a regular voice not a whisper.
I get bored easily, it's why one day I'll be working on assassins, the next Sci-fi, then Vikings, then vampires, then planning world domination--wait, what?
Moving on. I love animals and we have a dog, 120p mastiff. He's great with the kids and careful around them, but he'd run me over for a piece of bologna. Otherwise he loves us.
If you want to get to know me better join me on FB or twitter. Right now I need to change back into a mom, it's my best super power.
If you are checking out reviews prior to reading Guardian, I recommend that you first read book 7, Defender, which is the story of Macey and Taz. The events of Defender take place 4 years prior to those of Guardian. For some reason the book numbers are out of the story-chronology sequence.
I really loved this sci-fi-adventure-romance series (especially the unique world building and the romance), and I hope that Ms. Scholey will continue to add on to the New World saga. This reader would like to see some stories involving the Zargonnii warriors alliance with the Castians and mated Tonans and their quest to find mates.
Quick sweet read. I've enjoyed both of the series Scholey has created from the Earth 's imminent demise. One series involved the alien race the Zargonnii: Bay's Mercenary and this second series revolves around the alien race the Castians.
The Earth is dying or changing enough that it is inhospitable for human life. Storms, floods, earthquakes are causing humans to flee to other planets. So many are left behind and couldn't afford to take shuttles off world. Alien races have discovered human women are breeding compatible with their races, as well as able to mind-battle their enemy, the Gorganos - thus making human women a very sought after commodity. The Castians send groups of their warriors to Earth to look for any leftover human women to save and bring back as mates for their warriors on planet Bagron.
A Castian warrior named Roam stumbles across a Tonian warrior (mortal enemy to Castians) and they fight. The Tonian's mate screams at seeing them fighting, stopping them. As it turns out, the Tonian, Taz has mated with a human, has no tail and is loosely labeled as one of the good guys. As it turns out, Taz has been protecting a small group of women for years. One of the women, Jinx, fiercely hates both Tonians and Castians. A Tonian killed her father and a Castian abducted her sister. So both Taz and Roam conspire to stay in their 'human' forms to not upset Jinx.
The two warriors become warrior mates and as a result, both adopt a little bit of the other's characteristics.
Eventually Roam and Jinx get together, good HEA.
What I really enjoyed seeing in this book was the presence of the Zargonnii warship coming to the aid of the Castians during a fight against the new united threat of Tonians/Gorganos. Jinx of course learns to mind-fight, as does her unborn son - who will obviously be the next leader of the Castian people. I have read and enjoyed both of these series, so I am looking forward to more inter-mixing of the two series. Also the possibility of a third Zargonnii book would be great.
Earth is on it's last legs and a little group are struggling to survive. Jinx is among the group and is spunky, independent and prone to trouble. I love that she is both vulnerable and kick ass at the same time.
Roam the other main Character in the book is lonely and goes through some pretty life altering experiences. He too is both vulnerable and kick ass.
I am happy that this book redeemed Cobra because I was like "WHAT!!" when he made his offer which went totally against his races way of being but, within this story you have a better understanding of what he was trying to accomplish. Thanks for that!!
I love these worlds contained in this series and how they are trying to save those few left that did not get a chance to escape Earth during the beginning of its destruction....even if it is to help serve their own purposes of re-population.
I still feel that the endings are rushed But, will continue to read any and all books that come out for this series.
The internal conflicts the main characters have to deal with were interesting and compelling to keep reading, but the plot... It got wacky and bizarre at the climax of the book. Random new rules were thrown in and didn't make any sense.
I also take issue with the fact that the male lead could suddenly telepathically speak with his warrior mate, when in previous books it was explained as a very strong emotional/feeling connection (not a telepathic one).
I so loved this series and just want more. I loved especially the male characters, the ideas and how fast the story goes but without being confusing or boring. it shows just because you are labeled as being a spastic type doesn't mean you are.
This is the first that I really liked from this series. I've kind of liked a couple and I've like some from the spin off series, Unearthly World, which is much better done IMO. But this one did pretty well and addressed the issues that I've had and had about deception vs lying as these Castians cannot lie supposedly. This one happens in time line after book 7 as book 7 is Taz's story. Taz is the Tonan who has been protecting Jinx who become the love interest to Roam. Another problem with this series is the short names that are easily confused, takes a while to get them all in line. So Roam bumps into a Tonan and they start fighting but realizes that this Tonan is different. Once he give the Tonan a chance, Roam discovers that Taz is protecting a family of female earthlings, 5 altogether and has mated one of them. This changes Roam's mission of finding earthlings to protecting the ones that Taz already has.
They deceive by not telling the humans (other than the mate) that they are the aliens they fear. Instead that pretend that they are human though do actually lie outright. This irked me but is addressed later.
In truth this book is more about Taz and Roam's connection than Roam and Jinx. They are enemies that have to work together and learn to trust in order to save these vulnerable humans that all fear both their alien races.
I didn't like this one as much as some of the others. I liked both characters and how they interacted with the others, however I did not like them together. I saw no reason for them to love each other, especially for immortals. I really enjoyed his and Taz's relationship as two separate species becoming battle mates and how it changed their claw to rip shields. I found it sad that his lifelong battle mate died the same way as his parents and he couldn't even get comfort because his shield went up, making Jinx discover the disruption of him and Taz. The book got better on his planet. She finds her sister happily mated and pregnant. She makes up with Roam and they mate. They are attacked repeatedly and she becomes kickass with these mind powers. They adopt his battle mates daughter. They also get pregnant with a son, who will be very important in the future wars.

I found it to be a very full story in the sense that there was a lot of things going on. It still reads as a draft and is very fast paced. I also found this book to be full of sadness with all the losses.
Some of the losses were of characters I was invested in. I honestly thought the book was going in an entirely different direction when they happened. I can’t say I like the direction that it took. There was nothing wrong with it, I just didn’t care for it.
This author is very creative with this series. While I have complaints about needing to flesh out these stories a little more to make them less of a draft story and more of a novel. It is still an entertaining sci-fi romance, a lite read and always an HEA.
again, the plotline remained the same but the story is again in another setting. it was cleverly written and the author thought the structuring through nicely. it got deeper into tonan and castian culture, but there were reasons for it and it was presented in an interesting story. then the end part of the book sets you up for another species and another series. it was well done and I enjoyed this series immensely. not as much lol moments in this one but Matthews voice adding the tones of dry wit in dialogue did give me a chuckle or two. well done to the author and the narrator, I enjoyed having a lighter sci fi to listen to with some great humour and awesome wit thrown In.
Of this particular series, this book is the most outstanding!
The events that occur in this book are the most dramatic and the characters in this storyline will make you fall in love with then and take you on the ride of your life!!! I would recommend this book and series to everyone who loved a great paranormal romance and action series!!!
Starts strong with world building....but I couldn’t figure why Roan would fall for Jinx. Never did feel it was believable which is a must for a romance
With this book we hit the pot of gold, if you are only going to read two books in this series make them the first and this one. I love this book, I want so much more of this story and this family and this characters. In this one the author developed so many relationships masterfullty. I actually don't know how she keeps from geting repetitive, her books are amazing I love them.
As much as I enjoy these stories, I can't help a bit of an eye roll occasionally. The first half or so of this one is fun and interesting. Towards the very end is when I felt it became a little too, I don't know, ridiculous maybe...just a bit. Anyway as usual the guys are gorgeous and everything a girl could want. Jinx is driven to be helpful and is a little bit bumbling with it...in an endearing way. If you have enjoyed the first five in the series then you will need no encouragement to get this one :)
The first 50% of the book was mainly about Roam's melancholy and his developing bromance with Taz. I found the development of Jinx & Roam's relationship didn't get off until the 60% mark but boy, did it explode. Well worth the wait!
As always, I anticipate the next story in the New World series.
Not my favourite of this series. The "steam" factor was a bit lower than usual.
I think it was partly Jinx's preconceived prejudices that made the whole thing less romantic. She hates Castians and Tonans so it forces Taz and Roam to hide their identities. The warrior mate thing was interesting as it added some new possibilities for the series.
I liked Roam a lot, and enjoyed reading his story. Unfortunately, the books were written out of order and this one should be read after Defender to have the sequence of events in the proper order, otherwise it can all get pretty confusing.
This is my favorite in the series so far. I love Roam and Jinx as a couple. He was hilarious, has a wonderful sense of humor and I loved that Jinx had a kick ass attitude. It was nice to see Taz and Macey again. It is recommended to read book 7 (Defender) before reading book 6 (Guardian) and I'm glad I did. I'm really enjoying this series and plan to stay here awhile.
Jinx is a cute heroin and Roam a big alien guy. She has been saved by a Tonan after one killed her father, and a Castian stoled her sister, so she has a problem somewhere ^^
after some adventures on earth... oups I won't tell, but there a HEA ;)
Possibly my favorite in the series so far! - 1st read 8-17-14
OK after reading it again 9-14-16, and then reading the next one i think Taz's story might win out against this one. Both are still really good and i am loving this whole series.
I think this was one of my favourite books in this series. It was hilarious...I loved it when he battled the snake and lion behind his mate's back. I fell in love with Roam and Taz. I really hope there are more books in this series!!
I love all of her New World books. I found Gaurdian very interesting and funny. What I didn't like was how it sprinkling from on scenario to another without any warning. It m made for very confusing reading and some of the chapters didn't make sense.
Loved this book, it's been a while since I read any in this series and I forgot how much I enjoyed it. Roam has been in particular a joy to read. He is so lovely with his approach to Jinx and letting her get to know him given her misgivings towards Castians and Tonans. A great book all round.
I love this author and her sweet aliens. They are dominant to some degree but never jerks, they need human women and appreciate them. They are always lovable.
OK read, though to be honest, I am more interested in Taz's story.
H is actually more laid back and got a humorous side to him, and with the h being pretty accident prone, it's pretty funny seeing him trying to prevent her from getting hurt.
I actually is pretty upset with how long it takes the h to get over this so called betrayal. She knows and has been very close to Taz for 4 years, so it's very hurtful and childish of her to ignore him for so long to me. It really is common sense that you should not judge a whole race but through individuals. I would have understood hurt, but her actions make it seem more like it's all about her being pissed and her distancing herself from them is very selfish and hurtful, especially when she knows how much both guys love her and would have given their life for her in a heartbeat. This seriously dropped my liking of the book tons.
I still have some problem with the love scenes to be perfectly honest, it's not really sizzling to me, and most times, I feel like they're not even enjoying it and is just suffering through it.
I do love the twist in the plot, with the bad guys are not really all bad and the really exciting battle towards the end. It gives more dimensions to story and I totally have fun seeing more races entering the fray, as well as h kicking arses.
