This was another great read in this cozy mystery series. Viv and Gemma set out on their second cruise, celebrating retirement. They put their sleuthing skills to work to solve a double murder case.
So retired hotel housekeeper Gemma Becker and retired Vegas showgirl Viv, together with their beloved dogs, are embarking on their second cruise on the Princess of Paradise. Poor Gemma and Viv never seem to get a relaxing cruise! This one starts going wrong when Viv’s obnoxious ex-husband Tony turns up on the ship. Then his associate Frank Russo is found dead and things really start going downhill when Tony is found dead and Viv is number one suspect, at least in the eyes of ship’s head of security Michael Grimshaw, who has never forgiven them for solving the murders on their previous cruise. This is a fun, compulsive reading story as you follow the intrepid duo on their search for the murderer. There are plenty of suspects and lots of characters we met in the first book. Just don’t book a holiday on their next cruise! I received an ARC and am leaving a totally unbiased review.
I love Hazel Smith's mysteries but had not read any of her Gemma Becker books. This was the 2nd in the series and just delightful. I had not read the 1st book and will do so immediately. Gemma is a retired Head of Housekeeping at a posh hotel and has decides to spend her time on board a cruise ship. I have often thought about what it might be like to cruise around the world. On this cruise Gemma is faced with two murders and must solve them to clear her friend's name. Both characters are well rounded and believable. I'm looking forward to reading their back story in the first book as they seem an unlikely pair of friends! And where will they go next? I received an ARC from the author but my opinions are my own.
Another great installment in this series! Hazel is a pro at bringing characters to life. Gemma and Viv are at it again aboard the Princess of Paradise. Old flames and acquaintances make an appearance that makes the cruise anything but relaxing. Looking forward to the next installment! (I was given an ARC for my honest review).
Sublime reading ! It’s such a joy to read one of Hazel Smith’s books. This series is fast coming my favourite , sorry ladies back at L’Hotel Fontaine the Poshest of hotels we all know so well, but this is on a Cruiseship and I favour the vibe just a tad more. Don’t be sore I love to imbibe and remember my own times onboard a grand luxury liner , nothing finer some might say designer. British retiree from Head of Guest services at the Hotel afore mentioned, Gemma Becker and her Cocker Tzu Buddy are once again joined onboard by her new bestie Viv and her Chihuahua Fernando . They really are a hoot! A brilliant sleuthing partnership . Total opposite upbringing but they compliment each other and oh brother do they get in some scrapes. This latest one is a real doozy , it involves Viv’s ex husband , she sees her chance to pay him back when his partner winds up dead. Her delight though is a bit premature as his demise is the next to occur…So now what do they do when they think who done him in was you ? Oh Viv what’re going to do? Search the whole ship looking for a clue … or plenty of them because they’re going to need as much ammo as they can get because the Chief of Security who’s breathing down their necks needs all the help he can get. Navigating through all the activities onboard , whether it’s Princess of Paradise got Talent and competitors with talons , claws drawn it’s that fierce. The singing of songs than does nothing more than pierce the most delicate of ears in the older ladies of formidable years. It’s torturous at best and Viv needs her rest. If she’s going to be of any use to sift through clues and save herself from arrest . The Ex Vegas performer although now retired isn’t so dead beat although tired on her feet. From all the heat. Her and Gemma make a great team they compliment each other so well . So precise and concise they do gel. What a splendidly funny and somewhat eventful journey , it’s beginning to be habit forming a personage or two ending their’s on a gurney! As long as the ship doesn’t sink and the ladies keep themselves out of the clink , or should I say Brig , they will cope with what’s thrown their way and live to sail-away another day. We’ve been to the Bahamas the Port of Nassau. Where will the next voyage take them ? Who knows . Just remember to pay homage to the sailors of old and not propose good voyage but Bon voyage. Splendid storytelling by the great Hazel Smith , an accomplished wordsmith of the highest calibre. Maybe she’ll have the Ship sail next to Addis Ababa, take in the Red Sea sights and delight. A fast paced tour with an overnight stay , or a slower pace soak up with the Everyday City Tour . Want more? There’s shopping and more to explore . Before embarkation and setting sail once more. I got a little carried away there, but I’m certainly looking forward to the next itinerary and immersive scenery. Bravo !
I received an ARC from the author in return for an early review on this book.
Gemma and Viv return on their second cruise together and this one proves to be a little more personal and unsettling for Viv as one of her ex husbands is aboard the ship. Their parting wasn’t friendly so she’s not happy to see him or his partner on the ship. Turns out the partner turns up dead the next day and Gemma and Viv start to figure out if her ex had anything to do with his death. They know the guy wasn’t a good guy and find out a few others who could have wanted him dead as well including her ex and the young woman her ex is with currently. Unfortunately when Viv tells Gemma she wishes her ex was dead others overhear her and a few days later he turns up dead and she is now the prime suspect!
The ladies now have to prove Viv’s innocence but time is running out and the security chief considers Viv his main suspect! However, a twist sends Gemma looking at a new suspect and things start looking up and things just may be getting a bit brighter for our vivacious Vivian Carlisle!
I love this new series! These two retirees- one a head housekeeper at a posh London Hotel and the other a Las Vegas show girl meet up on a cruise ship and form a friendship one wouldn’t think would take considering their different backgrounds but they do.
I give this series an enthusiastic two thumbs up review and encourage you to get it and share it with your friends and family! If you’ve read any of Hazel’s books before then you know how good her writing is and what a treat you have waiting for you! If you haven’t, well then you are in for a treat because you are going to enjoy this book I can guarantee it!
I look forward to the next cruise adventure where Viv once again will be her old self throughout not plagued by having her ex around and then having to prove she didn’t kill him!

This contemporary Gemma Becker Cruise ship cozy mystery is page-turning with exceptional world-building and characters that are captivating, intelligent, witty, humorous, fun, and realistic. Their journey is enthralling with murder all aboard, drama, danger, humor, two murders, one cruise, a retired housekeeper who can't keep out of trouble, Gemma's loyal Cocker Tzhu Buddy is by her side and she plunges in headfirst to sift through a shipload of secretive suspects, mystery, action, adventure, heartfelt emotions, and more. I recommend reading this book by an extraordinary author who knows how to captivate her readers' hearts and attention with murder all aboard and a Gemma Becker cruise ship cozy mystery that is sure to transport readers into a world that is humorous, dangerous, and unforgettable.
I received this book via BookFunnel and am voluntary leaving a review.
Gemma Becker, unpacking her clothing in her cabin on the Princess of Paradise cruise ship, hears a loud scream. She hurries out of her cabin and finds her friend Viv Carlisle muttering curses. Apparently the former Vegas showgirl, now in her 60’s like Gemma, had just broken a nail when she tripped over her Chihuahua, Buddy. That was dramatically tragic enough, but more bad luck would be darkening her day when her ex-husband Tony Morelli comes aboard, bringing along his new fiancee, actress Ruby Delacroix, her older sister Opal, and his disgusting slimeball business partner Frank Russo. Frank is the first victim found dead! When Tony also is found dead soon after, Viv’s open hostility points to her as the prime suspect! With only a week before they dock, Gemma is immediately on the case to prove her friend’s innocence while discovering the actual murderer. Join in on the search for clues and see if you can figure it out along with them!
Gemma and Viv are living the cruising lifestyle yet again. But there is a fly in the ointment, Viv's ex, Tony is on board, flaunting his new love interest, Ruby who along with her sister is also along for the ride. Tony is a bad egg and his cohort business partner aboard is Frank. When Frank is found murdered the ship is thrown into chaos. Viv is elated that things are going badly for Tony and is not shy in shouting about it either. But then TONY winds up dead and things take a drastic turn. For as his ex with an axe to grind Viv is a the top of the suspect list. She and her puzzle solving friend Gemma Becker along with their furry sidekicks Fernando and Buddy must work fast before they dock and with head of security Grimshaw's suspicions Viv is involved it's a race against time before the cuffs are slapped on her wrists! Another fun and entertaining cruising mystery with the intrepid Gemma and Viv at the helm. Brilliant read.
Gemma and Viv are all aboard for a new cruise and a new mystery. This one is particularly unappealing for Viv as her first and worst as she says ex husband is a passenger along with some colorful people. Unfortunately Viv gets more than bad memories when she becomes prime suspect in the ex’s murder. Now she and Gemma must race the clock to catch a killer before the ship makes port. Vegas themes abound which was great fun. I especially enjoyed the talent show where we got to see Viv in all her glory. The mysteries were tricky as there was little evidence and so many suspicious suspects. I will say there was a bit of a drag in the middle for me as there were a few repetitive scenes of eating and recapping and saying we have suspects but lack hard evidence. Other than that it was a lovely second act for Gemma and Viv! I received an ARC from the author. This is my sincere and honest review.
“Murder All Aboard” is a fun cozy mystery set aboard a cruise ship. Best friends Gemma, a former head of housekeeping at a posh London hotel, and Viv, an extroverted former Vegas showgirl, may seem like an unlikely duo, but they work surprisingly well together. These retirees, along with their beloved pups, embark on a relaxing cruise—only to get caught up in murder accusations. Viv’s former spouse, Tony, who has moved on many times and is now aboard with his much-younger fiancée, Ruby, soon becomes a victim of a double homicide. To make matters worse, Viv becomes a prime suspect, as she had never hidden her disdain for Tony.
Though I rarely give high ratings to cozy mysteries, as the plots and characters often aren’t as well-developed as in other genres, this book had everything I was looking for. With a nod to Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, I loved how Gemma was able to unravel the mystery. A real winner of a cozy mystery!
In this second book of the new series, “A Gemma Becker Cozy Cruise Ship Mystery,” Ms. Smith combines mystery and humor in a lively, fun book. The themes of friendship, betrayal, past tragedies and the unpredictable lifestyle aboard a cruise ship combine to give us an entertaining story. Gemma and Viv’s friendship is so funny. Gemma is a retired, 60-something, reserved Brit with a sweet, easygoing, recently adopted canine companion, Buddy. Viv is her complete opposite. Viv spent her youth as a celebrated Vegas showgirl with a cute, little Chihuahua that she dresses to match her own flamboyant style, Fernando. Yet, being so different works for them with both of them being kind-hearted, supportive and loyal, they balance each other. There were lots of red herrings with a surprise ending. Looking forward to the next one!
Another delightful adventure‼️ Gemma and her friend Viv are on another cruise with their canine friends with the intention of relaxing and enjoying what's to offer on board. Sounds pleasant but throw in Viv's ex and his young fiancé, a few possible villains ~ and murder is the result! I did figure out the murderer before Gemma but then again I was looking at all the evidence in one piece ~ this didn't lessen the reading enjoyment one iota ~ and it was great when the threads came together for Gemma and she devised a secret plan with Grimshaw to apprehend the murderer. The end of chapter 31 needs a tissue as it's very touching! Overall an excellent read and not only am I looking forward to the next book ~ I'm highly recommending the series!
Gemma Becker is a retired chief housekeeper of a London hotel. Together with her dog Buddy and her friend Viv with her dog Fernando they are on a cruise. Viv is a former Las Vegas showgirl. Although they have different personalities from each other Gemma and Viv form a great friendship.
The cruise takes a turn for the worst when Viv’s horrible ex husband and his partner turns up on the cruise. Then they both end up dead. And Viv is a prime suspect.
Follow along as Gemma and Viv hunt for clues to try and solve the murder. Can they find the killer before the end of the cruise or before they themselves get hurt.
This is a well written fun story which I really enjoyed reading.
I received a free copy of this book and freely and honestly leave my review.
Gemma and Viv embark on their next cruise and head towards the Bahamas. Unfortunately in turns out some of the passengers are from Las Vegas where Viv used to live. Included among them was her ex-husband, Tony, and that takes away some of Viv's enjoyment of the cruise. When Frank Russo, Tony's business partner, turns up dead, Viv's hopes it was Tony who did it so he would go to prison. Michael Grimshaw, the head security officer, begins to investigate he believes it was an accidental fall from an upper deck, but the ladies aren't sure. When a threatening note is found in his room they then know it wasn't an accident. This book had a number of suspects for the ladies to investigate and kept them busy throughout the whole cruise. It was a very enjoyable book.
An Extremely Pushy Protagonist Two murders, one cruise, and a retired housekeeper who can’t keep out of trouble. Sixty-something Brit Gemma Becker was expecting nothing more than Bahamas breezes. But her cruise takes a nosedive when her fabulous bestie Viv’s first and worst ex-husband comes aboard. As Viv wrestles with old wounds and a new nemesis, the trip takes a grim turn when her ex’s sleazy business partner is found dead. While navigating shipboard activities, mysterious clues, and an unforgettable talent show, the two friends keep running into dead ends. With the ship's security chief breathing down their necks and death threats trying to stop them, Gemma must expose the killer…before this cruise becomes her last. The author has a good writing style and the story flows well. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t deal with Gemma. In Murder She Sang I felt that Gemma was smart and sassy but in this book she was just not likeable. She was condescending, rude, pushy and arrogant. And her obsession with the little issues with housekeeping was just sad. Why would she think she could go to the supervisor and tell her how to do her job. The protagonist should have qualities that endear them - in this book she just whined about everything from the tea to the sheet thread count to the housekeeping staff and security, especially about Grimshaw. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
Gemma, Viv and their beloved pups are on another cruise, this time to Nassau in the Bahamas. Things are going swimmingly until Viv spots her first ex-husband on the ship talking with his slimy business partner. When the partner ends up dead, Viv is ready and willing to see her ex go down for the crime. When he turns up dead, Viv becomes suspect number one in both murders. Hopefully she and Gemma can get this mystery solved and clear her name before the ship docks in New York and Viv is arrested.
The first book in the series, Murder She Sang, was good. This one’s even better. We get to know Viv better and see the real person behind the fake eyelashes and blonde hair. She and Gemma are a great team, and their friendship, as unlikely as it is, is the best part of the book. Murder All Aboard is an entertaining mystery with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, a plethora of suspects and the usual ship’s crew, including the dashing Captain Scott Pierce and everyone’s favorite pain in the butt security officer, Grimshaw.
This is a great book, and a really fun read. I can’t recommend it enough!
I received an advance review copy of this book and am enthusiastically leaving this 5-star review.
Retired, and cruising the high seas, former head hotel housekeeper Gemma once again finds herself investigating a shipboard crime, with active dissuasion from the head of security. She gets much of her inspiration from the Father Brown detective stories, but it is not quite as though she finds parallels there to the murder(s) before her. Instead, her key to figuring things out comes from a show tune (watch for it). Along the way, her own character finds some interesting development. You can't quite just shuffle off years of being responsible for the housekeeping of a luxury hotel, when you see dust and smudges where they should not be. But she learns to make allowances and realize it is not exactly her responsibility any more. At the same time, she learns to loosen up in other areas, thanks to the influence of her friend Viv, a former Las Vegas showgirl, who still maintains a lot of that attitude, even though her joie-de-vivre is threatened by the fact that one of the dead men is her former husband.
Note, the copy I reviewed was an Advance Reader Copy (ARC), but this in no way prejudiced my voluntary review. I like and recommend this series and the Maid Ivy series from which these are spun off.
In the second book of this series, Gemma Becker and her Cocker-Tzu, Buddy, team up with Gemma’s friend, Vivian Carlisle and her Chihuahua, Fernando, to solve two murders aboard the cruise ship Princess of Paradise. The story begins with Gemma and Viv enjoying a drink at the ship's bar when Viv sees that her horrible ex-husband is also on the cruise with his fiancé, her sister and his sleazy business partner. After Gemma and Viv witness a heated exchange between the two men, it is no surprise that the sleazy business partner is found dead the next morning. Viv finds herself a suspect in the murder and the ladies begin a quiet investigation. But, soon after, there is another murder- Viv’s ex! Neither victim is well liked and there is no shortage of suspects. The investigation has many twists and turns and finishes with a surprise. I enjoyed this book very much. The author did a great job of character development and her descriptive powers made me feel as if I was actually on a cruise. I highly recommend it! I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy and am pleased to leave this voluntary review.
What could be better than a ten day cruise on a luxury liner with your best gal pal? Sounds idyllic, right? But with British citizen Gemma Becker and her American friend Vivian Carlisle, it’s never all smooth sailing, but through no fault of their own.
The promise of a nice, relaxing cruise is quickly shattered when Viv’s ex-husband, Tony, boards the ship with his “entourage” - including his new girlfriend; a woman who is young enough to be his daughter. Tony and Viv met years ago in Las Vegas. And we all know what happens in Vegas isn’t always legal. So Viv immediately has suspicions about what Tony and crew are up to.
When there’s a murder on the ship, Gemma and Viv are drawn into the investigation. But as things progress, are the two ladies in danger themselves? Will they be able to solve the mystery before the ship docks and all the suspects disembark?
The mystery will draw you in and keep your attention. The friendship between Gemma and Viv is heartwarming. Overall this is a great cozy mystery.
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review.
What a great read. Two wonderfully opposite elderly women, Viv, a former Las Vegas showgirl and Gemma, a retired head hotel housekeeper became friends on a previous cruise and now they are in the middle of not one, but 2 murders that occur on their current cruise ship. Unfortunately, the cruise security officer thinks that Viv might be involved because one of the victims just happens to be her ex-husband and the security officer is not at all interested in having their help to solve the murders. Fortunately this cruise caters to folks with dogs and the ship had designated doggy relief areas - discreet, astroturfed top deck nook that did its best to mimic a patch of park, which allowed Viv to have Fernando, a pampered six-pound tan Chihuahua and Gemma had Buddy, her loyal Cocker Tzu. Unlike other books with animals, these don't actually help solve the murders, or talk, but they definitely have personalities. Join them as they do get involved in helping to solve the murders without the blessing of the cruise security chief. A real page turner that I didn't want to put down.
I received an arc of the book from the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.
The cute book cover of Murder All Aboard, sets the tone for a fun cozy mystery by Hazel Smith. Sixty-something Gemma Becker used to oversee the housekeeping at London's renowned Hotel La Fontaine. Now she is on a Vegas-themed cruise onboard the Princess of Paradise, with her Cocker Tzu--Buddy and her friend Vivian Carlise. What was supposed to be a relaxing voyage turns out to be the scene of two murders, one of which is Viv's ex-husband Tony Morelli. The other victim is Frank Russo--Morelli's associate. Gemma has a penchant for puzzles and Viv is a flamboyant ex-showgirl with an ax to grind. Nothing is going to stop them from solving the murders. Head of security--Michael Grimshaw doesn't want their help and he doesn't make things easy for them. But things all work out by the time they dock in New York. I really liked the 2 main characters and the setting. I love cruising and the author made it easy to relate to the places and activities on the Princess of Paradise. I look forward to reading future books in this series.
Gemma and Viv could not be more different. Gemma is reserved and strudy and organized having spent her life working her way up as a hotel maid. Viv has a big personality which on full display in this book. Somehow, this unlikely duo make a great team. That teamwork is needed to solve a double murder with ties to Viv's past. As always the cruise itself and the stunning destinations set a fun backdrop for the story. Admittedly I had my suspicions on who the killer was but the reasons count and that came from following the clues along with Gemma, Viv and their cute canines. I love how Gemma was buying Buddy clothes because Viv's dog was always dressed up Too cute. Honestly, I think it would be neat in coming book to see a bit of a crossover with maid Ivy and company taking a cruise or them getting together at some destination. It would be fun to see how that would change the crime fighting dynamic. I received an advance review copy and I'm leaving a voluntary and honest review.
This is book 2 in the Gemma Becker series. We first met Gemma in the Maid Ivy series when she was the Head of Housekeeping and a force to be reckoned with. She’s still quite formidable but she’s loosened up quite a bit. With a crazy friend like Viv, she can’t help it. It’s been fun watching her evolve bit by bit. She’s not giving up the Earl Grey though, even if she’s willing to sample other teas. In this book the mystery hits close to home and solving it is imperative because Viv is a suspect. I did guess the murderer but I did that when the cast was introduced and just figured that was the most likely one. The story was very well written and aside from murder, it was fun with crazy characters and cute dogs. I’m really enjoying Gemma’s character development and the ship’s crew that we’ve gotten to know. I did receive this book as a free ARC from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily.
After successfully solving a murder mystery on her first cruise of a yearlong cruise adventure retired hose keeper Gemma Becker is ready for a relaxing cruise through the Bahamas. Much to her surprise the ex of her new best friend, Viv, is on board and the peaceful cruise she was looking forward becomes a fleeting memory. First the ex’s business partner appears to have been killed followed by Viv’s ex meeting his demise. When Viv becomes one of the suspects Gemma works to solve the mysteries before they dock back in New York City. Each time they think they have found the murderer there is puzzle piece missing. The head of security of the Princess of Paradise cruise ship also seems to working against them to solve the mystery. When Gemma finally realizes who the real murderer is a daring plan is set in place to trap them and gain a confession. Another delightful book in the Bemma Becker Cruise Ship Cozy Mystery Series. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I fell in love with Gemma and Viv in book 1 and still loved them in book 2. What a delightfully different duo. They add some humor to an otherwise serious situation. I mean, two people were murdered so having some humor in the story added to my enjoyment.
As for the murder itself, I actually guessed the murderer early on, long before there was evidence to point that direction. I'm not sure how I knew. I just did. So, for me, it was watching Gemma and Viv figure it out while at the same time, I waited to see if I was wrong.
I look forward to reading Gemma and Viv's next adventure together. I'd love to see Viv on a cover with Gemma so I could have a real visual of her. I also think it would be fun to listen to their story in an audiobook. These are enjoyable books.
Sex: innuendo Language: Yes Violence: two murders-not graphic
I love all things Hazel Smith and this does not disappoint, this is book two in The Gemma Becker Cruise Ship cozy mystery series. Gemma Becker is a retired housekeeper from The Hotel LaFontaine; Viv is a retired showgirl from Las Vegas. They became friends on a previous cruise. Viv spots Tony, her first and worst husband on the cruise. Tony's sleazy businessman and partner is found dead from a fall. Tony is then found dead, and Viv is the number one suspect. Gemma and Viv are investigating, but Michael Grimshaw the head of security does not like their meddling. Others are more likely to tell Gemma and Viv things they have overheard. I love Gemma and Viv's doggies. Their are many more suspects on board, other than Viv; security just needs to open their eyes. Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Hazel Smith!!!!
I loved reading Murder All Aboard. First of all my favorite characters Gemma and Viv compliment each other like life long friends. Their relationship is strong. We not only have one murder on board the Princess of Paradise but two including Viv's ex Tony and his business partner Frank. At first I thought Tony murdered Frank, but when Tony is murdered well needless to say that flew out the window. Gemma has a remarkable ability to see what others don't and has recall on conversations to keep the facts clear. Even Grimshaw needed Gemma's lead to solve the case. Intriguing. I'm sure you will not guess the murderer. Gemma and Viv make more friends on the cruise and maintain the past relationships on the previous cruise. Two people I would love to have on my next cruise, you know just in case...
Retired head housekeeper of Hotel LaFontaine in London, Gemma Becker, along with her loyal Cocker Tzu Buddy is enjoying her time aboard the Princess Paradise cruise ship. With her younger friend Viv, a former Las Vegas showgirl they find themselves involved in a mystery after Gemma finds a dead body on an early morning walk. When Viv becomes the number one suspect, Gemma decides to help clear her friend’s name even if it means going against the head of security who lets her know in no uncertain terms that she must not get involved. Straight-laced Gemma and flamboyant Viv begin their own investigation with hilarious results. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
