Scattered Garbage

Growing up in the 1980s in Scarborough, Ontario was simply the best, it was freedom.

Children woke at dawn to watch Saturday morning cartoons. They would put on their Walkmans, jump on their bikes and stay out all day until the streetlights came on; stopping at the local variety store for popsicles, Nerds or Bubblicious.

They would play by the lake on the train tracks, or even stop off at the local library to get the latest Nancy Drew book. There were no cell phones, no social media … just baseball diamonds, skipping ropes, pools and dirt to play in.

But that all changed for teenagers Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Samantha when the Scarborough Rapist started terrorizing their city. No one knew who he was, and the number of assaults and rapes were rapidly growing. All three girls were scared, and their idyllic city was not safe anymore.

Jennifer is attacked in the parking lot of her high school, Elizabeth starts dating an abusive narcissist, and Samantha is raped by her boyfriend. What the women don’t realize, is that the real monsters are men they all know.

Years later, as they try to rebuild their lives, they must hatch a plan to finally take revenge, and make the men pay for what they did.

**Book Review: *Scattered Garbage* by Dawn Rodger**

*Scattered Garbage* by Dawn Rodger transports readers back to the seemingly carefree days of the 1980s in Scarborough, Ontario, a time when kids found freedom in Saturday morning cartoons, long bike rides, and days filled with simple joys. But as Rodger’s narrative unfolds, this nostalgic backdrop darkens, mirroring the harsh reality that shattered innocence for three teenage girls—Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Samantha—whose lives are forever altered by violence and betrayal.

Rodger skillfully juxtaposes the idyllic childhood setting with the sinister presence of the Scarborough Rapist, a shadow that looms large over the community, breaking the illusion of safety and trust. Each girl faces harrowing trials: Jennifer suffers a public attack, Elizabeth becomes entangled in an abusive relationship, and Samantha endures an assault from someone she once trusted. The true monsters, as they tragically learn, are the men closest to them.

The story’s strength lies in its honest portrayal of trauma, resilience, and the pursuit of justice. Years later, the women’s paths converge as they seek redemption and revenge, reclaiming their sense of self and power. *Scattered Garbage* is both an intense and deeply moving tale that confronts difficult subjects while exploring the impact of violence on identity and community. For those who appreciate narratives of survival and the strength of sisterhood, this book offers a powerful, haunting read that lingers long after the last page.

Review:

👉 Scattered Garbage by Dawn Rodger is a raw and evocative journey back to the 1980s in Scarborough, Ontario—a time that feels both familiar and haunting. This novel masterfully contrasts a childhood filled with innocence and freedom against the chilling darkness that creeps into the lives of three young girls, Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Samantha.

👉In those early days, life was pure magic: kids were out all day, riding bikes, listening to Walkmans, enjoying Saturday morning cartoons, and stopping at corner stores for Bubblicious and popsicles. There were no cell phones, no social media—just baseball games, skipping ropes, pools, and endless summer days. But for these three girls, that sense of safety begins to crack as the Scarborough Rapist’s shadow looms over their city, turning familiar streets into places of fear and uncertainty. The innocence of their world shatters, and life becomes a fight for survival and justice.

👉Each girl endures her own personal nightmare—Jennifer is attacked near her school, Elizabeth finds herself trapped in a relationship with an abusive narcissist, and Samantha is betrayed by someone she trusted. They all learn a terrifying truth: sometimes, the monsters are the people they thought they knew.

🤩 As the years pass, these resilient women each struggle to rebuild their lives, haunted by the trauma that marked their youth. Their strength and determination only grow as they come together, their shared pain turning into a burning desire for justice. In an unforgettable act of courage, they take matters into their own hands, setting out to reclaim their power and make the men responsible face the consequences.

👉Rodger’s storytelling is both harrowing and beautiful, capturing the innocence of youth while pulling readers into the stark reality of survival and the bond of sisterhood. Scattered Garbage is more than a story—it’s an experience, an exploration of trauma, resilience, and the fierce strength that comes from friendship. For readers who appreciate a powerful and intense narrative, this book delivers a haunting tale of courage and redemption.
