So this book is honestly one of the most complex pieces of mystery fiction that i've ever read. It is really hard to get to know all of the main characters because honestly there are two timelines that are happening at the same time, one that is happening on the island and one that is happening on the mainland. The one that is happening on the island features 7 very interesting characters and with the murder of one and there being a suspicious "victim number 1 out of 5" like sign on the front of their door, leaving only two to be nicknamed "the detective" and "the murderer".
But the really confusing part is the one that happens on the mainland. There is this murder and many letters going all around and there's this investigator with three friends that investigates many cases like it's almost three cases? One that happens sort of like the thing that is happening on the island right now, the second one being a murder of a daughter, and the third one being a burning of a house that causes the disappearance of a certain gardener and a couple. The thing that is happening on the mainland was so complicated it's getting pretty hard to understand. I also don't like the fact that the thing that is happening on the mainland doesn't really relate to anything that is happening to the island. I honestly expected the two timelines to be sort of related but they're not really that related that much....
It has also come to my knowledge that this is a manga???? I don't read those but judging by this being the book i can also probably say that the manga is also pretty good? This book really reminds me of Danganronpa, u know that game? It's a murder mystery where every single person dies after one night and everyone would vote on whoever they think is the killer and this is also just sort of like that but now in a 10 sided house. It also pretty much reminds me of among us the game which....is also.....killer, guess who...ye that.

Oh you thought that was the entire thing???? Na na na na na na lollllolololol. The word count should be higher than Jeff Bezos’ salary and I'm going to make it that way 🗿🗿🗿🗿.
So this book is actually very similar to another book which would probably explain its similarities to that and I also think that it is actually inspired from that book. It is “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie. The similarities between that in this book is very prominent because in that book instead of 10 random assortments of strangers being stranded in a private island with all of them dying one by one by one as said in a nursery rhyme when there is one main culprit. I really did think that they're going to be 10 characters instead of 7 characters in here, especially the fact that the title literally says “Decagon” and they went through and explored a decagon house. They also lived there with 10 “rooms” in the decagon house as usual. But my first impression when I got introduced to a “decagon house” is that it's almost the exact same floor plan as what is actually presented in the book but all 10 corners would be a different room so there would be 10 different bedrooms for 10 different characters. Wouldn't it be satisfying if the entire house is symmetrical and every single room of the 10 corners is a bedroom with the center part being the living headquarters that encompasses all the bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, and other house rooms? In that way it would be poetic and the title would make sense even more when there would be 10 characters in the story.
But *sighhhh*, that's not what happened in here and there were actually seven characters here not ten…..sadge.
The plot in here is straightforward but with the two timelines happening together, it gets a little bit confusing, but i can handle it 🗿🗿🗿🗿, it's not one of the more complicated mystery books that i've read but this is certainly not that easy to understand. Seven university students, part of a mystery club, went through a private island to explore. I thought that was it because that IS the thing that is explained on the synopsis but then there is another storyline happening. That is the investigators trying to solve the cases of two (maybe even three) cases of murder from the past and the current events of the missing university students. There were two previous club members and they did not proceed to join the others in exploring the island so they were left on the main island to solve more mysteries. Kawaminami, Shimada & Morisu are the cast of characters that are present on the mainland but I really do think that almost all of the characters introduced in the mainland are very forgettable in comparison to the characters that are in the island where the blue mansion and the decagon house is located. My focus on which cast of characters that i like is only for the characters on the island as i think that they have significantly more importance (i mean duhh, they're the one being mentioned in the synopsis).
NOW ABOUT THE THEMESSSSSSSS. (which is my favorite part of a writing this because there are many things that i have found when reading this)
There are many general concurrent things that are happening all throughout.
One of these is the implementation of real life people (most especially authors) in making the characters and naming them. I think that it is actually a very genius idea as I am already familiar with the authors being mentioned and have a general idea on who they are and what their characteristics are so likeeee I immediately just inserted my expectations and assumptions to their personality (i know that may be a bit toxic??? I think???? Cuz assuming the personality of a fictional character just by the person that it was inspired by is….not a good thing as it significantly lessens the character that the author tries to write them to be, you don't focus on the fictional "character", you only focus on the real person that the character is based on. It is a meta fiction that is kind of like a 4th wall break???????????????).
But I think that part is intentional and I think that Yukito Ayatsuji already knew that this was happening so he doesn't write too many detailed explanations and back stories to all of the characters as he might expect this scenario to play out when it comes to the readers.
Another thing that I can look for in this book is the “focus” of what the characters on the island are focusing on when all of their friends are like dying. 😭😭😭😭😭. As most of them are part of a mystery club, of course they're going to ✨✨✨✨try to solve the mystery ✨✨✨, much like any other investigators right??? But this is where they fall apart because they don't actually have any expert experience when it comes to solving mysteries and most especially pinpointing the culprit when it comes to a murder. They have only READ and interacted with media that are associated with mystery but haven't actually experienced it first hand. All of this means that they are mostly focusing on the problem without focusing on the IMPACTS and the EFFECTS of the murder of their friends to them. Dealing with the loss of an important person in your life can be pretty devastating. Especially when some of them are really close and even best friends with each other, losing them to a murderer must be really difficult. But this is where the flaws of all the characters are emphasized. Because of their overfixation in trying to solve the mystery, they have forgotten to connect and empathize with each other and even “care” when preventing another murder to happen. It is the exact opposite of what I would think would happen when someone you truly love dies. You would grieve and I think you would also appreciate the ones that are left (aka the ones that are surviving) and share the grieving together. But that is not what happens in this story as almost all of them are only fixated on determining who is the culprit which CAN hinder their mental well being and their skills in solving the mystery because they don't have a way to release all of their emotions on their dying friends.
Overall, this is a fascinating murder mystery that I did thoroughly enjoy (probably except for the things that are happening in the mainland lol). There are many things that are going around and really makes me empathize with all of the characters…i don't think that there is a singular ‘villain’ or a ‘bad person’ in here (except for of course the culprit) but i also think that the motives and the reasons that the culprit did all of those things actually made sense….empathizing with the culprit of a murder is harshh, yes it is a difficult thing to do but the way that its written in here is so thought provoking that even the CULPRIT out of all the people, can be someone that you root for. (Im not like rooting for more murders but like you get the thing 😭😭😭, the culprit is still my baby boy/girl).
