This series is incredibly charming. I keep finding myself having to go back and reread a few pages because the characters are so sweet. They cause me to reminisce about my old friends and forget to pay attention (you know, in a good way).

4.5 stars - I knew it would get there.

Some slices of life are bigger than others and this one eschews total froth for actually showing the day to day struggles of its characters. All of this works really well, from Natsumi and her crash course intro to the manga industry to the quickly resolved perils of two girls who like the same boy.

It has plenty of believable moments: Hideki’s clear focus on his glory days and reluctance to grow up makes him more than just an obnoxious jerk, and there’s a lovely little flashback story about the old woman Hiroto got his house from and her own inability to escape what she’s become.

The introduction of a potential new romantic rival for Hiroto, who hasn’t realized that he’s doing anything romantic at all yet, really works far better than it should. This new guy is Yomogi’s total opposite, yet he is attracted to her, but Hiroto is also her total opposite in other ways.

Yomogi and her struggles are always a lot of fun - she’s the classic person who puts far too much into her work and pays a price elsewhere for it. Her accidental meeting with Hiroto that has the tinge of fate to it is great, not least because it contains what can only be described as Chekhov’s fart.

While not the funniest series, or most action-packed, or even the most romantic, there’s a lived-in and believable feel to these characters that makes spending time with them incredibly satisfying and fun. This has really grown on me and proved to be a new favourite of mine.

'Y'know Hiroto... Maybe there no such thing... ...as it being too late to try something new.'

For some reason, I found this volume to be slightly less engaging than the previous volumes but it's still a very solid read that moves the overarching story ahead in somewhat unexpected ways.

The first chapter is about Natsumi having to think about selling points and not just her art anymore, which was something Hiroto could relate to from his actor days. I found it thought-provoking in the sense that feeling cutoff from something you have a passion for is such a universal feeling and can definitely make someone feel alone.

Seeing Yomogi work her magic at her workplace is truly a sight to behold, I love her. This time, she successfully finds a place for a novelist who seems too awkward and quiet but has actually ended up falling in love with Yomogi at first sight. The way he pushed the book at her to borrow it aljdks. I actually loved that there's a chapter focusing on Ishikawa's way of life because dude is truly unique LOL. I also loved the chapter on fate and Yomogi being upset at meeting Hiroto over and over. In true Hiroto fashion, he is in a love triangle and doesn't even know it LOL.

On the other hand, Natsumi trying to figure out why she also doesn't have a crush on Yamada like her whole class was so amusing to see because her conclusion was that it was obvs because he's too similar to Hiroto aklsskfjs. I really do get a feeling that Natsumi is queer but I guess we'll see 👀

We finally meet Hideki's wife, Saki, and baby, Tsumugi. At first, it seems like we're finally seeing a different side of Hideki but it turns out to be a scam and I was right there with Natsumi wondering just what Saki saw in Hideki to marry him especially since him trying to help with the baby read like weaponized incompetence.

I actually love that every volume has at least one story involving Granny because they always provide such deep insight into how much of an impact Granny has had on Hiroto. Their dynamic is also truly one of a kind because Granny clearly doesn't like people and sulks all the time, heh.

I did not think I'd be excited to read a slice of life manga featuring an ex-actor, art students, a real estate agent, new parents, and an author, but here we are. I finished volume 3 of Hirayasumi much faster than I thought I would and am already looking forward to the fourth volume. We learn a bit more about the author, who seems to be a weird addition to the cast, and I appreciate how there's a perfectly good depiction of what would drive one to live a minimalist lifestyle. Once again it's a perfectly good example of storytelling in manga that's wholesome enough to be read by multiple demographics. (I received an ARC of this title/volume from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.)

This Manga never fails to put a smile on my face, it's so fun. There are so many story threads that are so exciting to follow, plus the characters are all just great(aside from the writer, don't know about him).

And near the end we get a full spread of the city and it's GORGEOUS!!

Hirayasumi Volume 3 delivers the familiar, comforting slice-of-life charm we've come to expect, but with a delightful emphasis on romance that truly shines. What makes it so effective is the complete absence of dramatic flair or contrived conflicts. Instead, we witness the natural, unforced progression of individuals subtly falling for each other. To make it simple, it's refreshing.

Indeed, the entire Hirayasumi series excels at this kind of grounded storytelling. It maintains a laid-back and fun atmosphere while simultaneously feeling remarkably realistic. This volume deepens that realism by offering diverse perspectives, ranging from the youngest character, his niece, to the protagonist himself, and even his grandmother reflecting on the past. We also gain insights from the girl he's begun to develop feelings for. A 4.5 out of 5.

Vol. 1 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 2 ★★★☆☆

Just as lovely and pleasant as the previous volumes. The flashback chapters about Hiroto and Granny are still the ones I enjoy the most. Part of me wishes the whole series is just about them.

This series is such a delight to read. The humor is so wonderful, I refrain from reading it in public because I find myself chuckling so much! Each of the characters are easy to root for and their triumphs, big or small, feel like your own. I recommend this to anyone seeking a lighthearted story, one that reminds you to take life easy and enjoy it day by day.

Life is chaotic. It is full of disappointments and compromises. An adult life is forged out of failures and abandoned ideals. Taken alone, the journey can be too much to bear. Even the joy you feel for others can be tempered by the bitter sting of personal disappointment.

Keigo Shinzo’s Hirayasumi is a manga that examines the melancholy of these mundane changes in life. Even the joys come with loss. Loss of friends, of time, of passion. It is a series that continues its delightful, quiet pace even as it delves into the more somber realities. The series title roughly translates to “Quiet time in the bungalow,” a reference to the small home of our two leads, cousins Hiroto and Natsumi, and the tiny, personal scale of their world. The cast and focus extends a bit more in this third volume but it is still rooted in the dynamics between our leads, and the lives that intersect with theirs.

I really love the art style in this series! Keigo Shinzo portrays more realistic variety in faces and bodies than a lot of other mangaka whose work I've read, and I appreciate that a lot. It helps the story feel more grounded in reality and makes the slice of life plotlines more appealing to me. I love meeting new characters and seeing their unique designs!

My current gripe with this story—the one thing I would change if I could—is that I want there to be at least one queer character. So far, I love the relationships between Hiro and Hideki and Nat and her art school friend, and it's OK if they stay platonic. In fact, I would prefer that for Hiro and Hideki. But I hope that either Nat or her friend are sapphic in some way, even if it's not mutual, and I would love to see a storyline about one of them exploring a queer identity.

On a final note, I'm glad that Granny remains present at a character, appearing in at least one chapter per volume. Her relationship with Hiro warms my heart, and I'd love to see more of them in the future!
