She needs a lesson in love, and he’s the perfect teacher.
Mechanic Melody Swan is looking for a man who can share her hopes and dreams, but she swore she would never lose herself to passion. When sexy Heath Starr agrees to temporarily sub in the Under the Hood garage for his sister, Mel sees the perfect opportunity to enjoy being with a man without becoming attached.
Heath came to Meadowsweet to photograph nature, not find a hookup, especially since his last relationship ended in disaster. He vowed he’d never break another woman’s heart, and in turn, protect his own. Still, when Mel offers to serve as his outdoor guide, he can’t refuse.
Mel may say she’s only looking for right now, but her body is speaking a whole different language. And Heath’s viewfinder is drawn to her time and again. When the two find themselves isolated in a rustic cabin, they could both break their promises if they aren’t careful…
Love for Beginners is the second novella in the under The Hood Series. Although I enjoyed this one, I have to admit it took me a while to warm up to Melody Swan, mainly because her nervousness around men just seemed a little too exaggerated. But then you don't get the nickname ‘Ice Queen’ for jumping in their laps as an introduction now do you!
”My mom fell in love with a man who couldn’t commit, who didn’t want to stay around and be a part of a family. She chose him with her heart, not her head, and lived to regret it. That won’t happen to me.”
So essentially Mel is looking for a life-companion, a man to share her life with, minus the sex and emotional entanglements that usually come with it....
Heath Starr aka ‘Ladyslayer’, can you guess.... Yes he has a reputation with the ladies that precedes his arrival in town to help out his sister Alice (book one, Under The Hood), at the garage that Mel co-owns with her. I really liked Heath, the man has been hurt by a situation that wasn’t really of his own making and is looking to move on and make a massive change in his life all at the same time. In strolls Mel with her ‘sex & touching men’ leaves me cold statement, and he feels the need to help her out of her predicament by offering to be her practice Guinea Pig, on a No Commitments basis..
I am glad I stuck with Love For beginners; and I did warm up to Mel marginally as the story progressed. I have to admit I found all of the drama with her mother and her ”men are dangerous” mantra, additions that I felt the story could have done without. Heath literally needs a saint-hood for managing to keep his hands to himself at points, especially when Mel turns into a brat about things on more than one occasion, but I also found it endearing that he did.
“I just want to know”—she trailed a finger over his lips—“if what I felt before was a onetime thing. I want to find out if things really have changed for me. If the ice really is in the process of melting.”
Sally Clements really does have a special skill when it comes to the way she adds description to her stories, I found it just as enchanting in Under The Hood, and she did it again in Love for Beginners!
If life were a painting, this would be its ultimate masterpiece, the blending of color too magnificent, too unreal to be believed in an artist’s imagining. In a perfect world, a world inaccessible and unachievable, he’d live out here, feast his eyes and his soul with the beauty of this vista every night. Instead, he was just a traveller passing through. Capturing the memory would be a pale shade of perfection.
A light, quick and easy read, I hope we get Betty’s story at some point in the future.

In this sweet novella, part of the "Under the Hood" series from the Entangled Bliss publishing line, we have the story of Melody, a mechanic working in an all girls garage, and Heath, older brother to one of her co-workers who agrees to fill in as a substitute for his injured sister. Melody would like to find a male companion who's interested in her but not in sex, having had some disastrous experience in that field. Heath, determined not to break another woman's heart, agrees to let Melody practice becoming comfortable with a man on him - only the attraction they feel for each other is something neither expected.
I enjoyed this sweet and sexy romance. Heath's character is that of a friendly, confident man. He's attracted to Melody but willing to let her lead the way in their burgeoning relationship. Melody comes across as a strong woman on the outside - but vulnerable on the inside. The sexual chemistry between the two is well written and their rapport is delightful to read. The development of their feelings for each other though it progresses rapidly seems genuinely believable. The story is fast paced and secondary characters round out the story well. Although the ending seemed a bit far-fetched, the overall tone and feeling of the story was one of a pleasant, heartwarming tale with a happy ever after conclusion- just what one expects from a Bliss story! 4 lovely stars.
Note: I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for review
I have to start with saying I loved this novella. It was a super cute, fun and enjoyable read. Once you start it, you will want to finish it in one sitting, I did.
The author has written characters that are not only realistic, but you will feel invested in. Okay and maybe want to be real so you can be friends with them.
There was so much to like about this story. Heath and Melody were a wonderful hero and heroine. Both had past baggage but that didn't stop the passion flaring between them but did make them take it a bit slower than usual. I liked the fact that Melody was a different type of heroine, it made her more endearing and Heath was no slouch either. He's been added to my book boyfriends list.
Add in fantastic friends, Alice from Under the Hood and Betty, that slow burning romance and a couple of " she/he didn't just say/do that" moments and you have a story that is worth sparing a couple of hours of uninterrupted reading time for.
While being the second in the series can be read as a stand alone. This is an author who after the first book I added to my auto buy list and I for one are hoping for a story for Betty, she needs her happy ever after too. Please say it's coming.
I received this book from the publisher for an honest review.
This is an absolutely charming and entertaining read. Despite not having read the first book in the series, I don't think it detracts at all from the heart-warming story and I only wish it had been a little longer so I could enjoy Mel and Heath's growing relationship.
The story centers around mechanic Melody Swan, who has found that she lives up to a nickname given to her of Ice Queen. She's had a few disastrous relationships and it's resulted in corroding her self-confidence as well as brings about feelings of aversion to any sort of physical touching with men.
Our hero, Heath Starr, has his own dubious nickname - Ladyslayer - that he's trying to live down. He arrives in Meadowsweet to help out his sister, Alice, by temporarily taking over her position as a mechanic at Under the Hood, the company co-owned by Melody.
The two find that they are attracted to each other but for their own reasons, both deny wanting a relationship and strive to maintain a "just friends" relationship.
At this point in the story, I was a little unsure of how to take Mel - she easily spilled her deepest darkest secrets but as even the Heath thought at one point, she acts like she has a switch inside her that goes on and off, she switches her moods and reactions to quickly from one extreme to the other. I can sympathize with her confusion to her reaction to Heath but she was so quick to just to the other polar, it was a bit hard to cheer for.
On the other hand, I found Heath entirely charming and I loved how he was written as a strong character to resist Mel's advances despite his ever growing attraction. Not only was he empathetic but he also treated her with an honesty and sincerity that I felt through the pages.
Once they went on their weekend trip, I really feel hard for the heart of the story as both characters revealed themselves at their most vulnerable. Not to mention the sizzle between the two.
By the time they got through their fight and the downswing of their relationship, I was firmly in their camp and couldn't wait to see how things resolved between them because they were clearly made for each other. It was a lovely ending, had just the right amount of poignancy and heart, just like Heath and Mel.
I'm definitely going to try and get a copy of the first book in the series so I can read Alice and Mark's story and definitely looking forward to any more in this series!!
This is the second novella in the Under the Hood series. I love that these books center around independent women who work in nontraditional jobs, doing for themselves AND other women. It's a great bit of female empowerment in a fun way.
This time, the story focuses on Melody Swan, a woman who comes with a plane full of baggage. Her nickname is "Ice Queen" and it is an apt moniker. That iciness made it truly hard to warm up to her as a character. Instead, I felt more for Heath Starr, the Ladyslayer. Player or not, he was a far warmer and far more sympathetic character. He is also the brother of Alice, one of Melody's best friends and co-owner of their garage.
To say that Melody has issues with men, relationships, and sex would be an understatement. The entire thought of intimacy leaves her icily cold to the point of revulsion. This is completely at odds with her deep desire to have a lifetime relationship with a man. In a perfect world, that would mean nothing more than a deep connection and no intimacy. She was so cold and so aloof about what makes her that way that it was hard to connect with her. It felt like Heath was putting it all on the line for her, and she was not giving of herself much at all. Later we find out why she is the way she is, and it makes a little more sense. But it still seemed like an extreme overreaction to the situation.
In the end, however, the story became as romantic and sweet as the first book. It has the perfect happy ending!
Things to love...
--The ending. I hate an HEA in which someone has to give up something just to be together. Heath stood to be the one to make that sacrifice and he didn't. Excellent. --Heath. In many ways, the book was more about him than Melody. She transformed, but he was more sympathetic.
Things I wanted more/less of...
--Man hating. The sheer amount of man hating from some of the characters (no names/no specifics=no spoilers) seemed too be a bit much.
My Recommendation: This is a fun read with a great ending and even a few twists!
Love for Beginners by Sally Clements is one of those books that makes me smile. I love books where one of the main characters has had a crush on the other but assumes nothing can ever come of it. Brought together by circumstance, it was fun to watch the hero and heroine agree to a fling but both find so much more. When Melody Swan and her two friends opened their car repair garage they agreed that they would only employ women so that women customers would always feel they weren’t being taken advantage of. When her partner Alice is injured and business is stacking up Alice comes up with the perfect solution, bring in her brother, Heath, temporarily to help. It was hard not to like Melody; a smart businesswoman and trying her best to keep the business going and help her mom after she was laid off. However Mel has some issues stemming from her Dad leaving before she was born and a very strange view on what she wants from the man who shares her life. A view that changes when she feels something for Heath she’s never felt before. All Heath wants to do is help his sister out and give his brother a chance to prove to their Dad he’s more the capable of taking over the business. While Heath has enjoyed working for the family, his true passion is photography and he’s poised to finally make his dreams come true. What he doesn’t expect is to have a wrench thrown in his plans when he spends time with Melody. While this book moves at a fast pace there was just something about the way these two characters related to one another that had me rooting for them to figure it out. They shared so much of themselves with one another in the short time they spent together often offering each other very sage advice. Heath was able to help Melody through her intimacy issues by proving to her that her problems in the past were not her fault. Thoroughly enjoyable and incredibly sexy don’t miss Love For Beginners!
I liked this, but it was a book that took some warming up. I can only describe it as a switch being flicked in me and I went from being pretty nonchalant about it, to finding it sweet touching and romantic.
Mel Swann has an aversion to sex. She makes no secret that she'd like to be in a relationship but minus the intimacy and is awkward around men, believes many are after one thing and has a mum that feeds her brain with the 'all men are the same' ideology. When her business partner/friend, Alice ends up out of action, her brother Heath arrives to lend a hand. With the nick-name of Ladyslayer, Mel instantly judges, but there is much more to him and he has more than one reason for arriving in Meadowsweet.
It was the whole 'I want a man but I don't want sex' attitude that made Mel difficult to warm to. However, Heath is a gent and I quickly found myself falling under his spell, despite it lurking in the background that Mel actually didn't deserve his understanding. Perseverance paid off though and when everything clicked, it became a book I wanted to finish for the right reasons, although I did feel it was wrapped up a little too quickly.
If a shortish closed-door romantic read in a descriptively lovely setting is what you're after, then yes, Love for Beginners fits that bill and I'd happily read Betty's story in the future if we are given the opportunity.
(The second novella in the Under the Hood series, Love for Beginners could be read as a standalone, however as the first novella (entitled the same as the series) is Alice's and closely related, I would recommend reading first)
I received a copy of this courtesy of Entangled Publishing for an honest & unbiased opinion
Mel has no interest in losing herself in a relationship. She doesn't do passion, it's too dangerous to lose control. She runs a garage together with two friends and as one of them, Alice, can't be there full-time for a while her brother Heath is there to help her out. Due to their family business he knows all there is to know about cars, but he's actually dreaming of being a photographer and he wants to work on a project while he's also working for his sister. When Mel offers to help him to discover the area he doesn't say no. Mel doesn't think there's any way she can like a guy, so she's convinced she will be immune to Heath's charms, will he be able to prove her wrong?
Love for Beginners is a sweet romantic story. Mel thinks she isn't capable of having a complete and fulfilling relationship and she's willing to settle for less. My heart ached for her when I read about that. She's such a gentle and generous person and goes through great lengths to take care of the people she loves. She can certainly use a bit of fun and I was glad Heath manages to bring her out of her shell. He is creative and I liked his attitude. I kept my fingers crossed that he'd be able to convince Mel she could feel something. They're wonderful together and I loved their easy conversations.
Mel is another strong heroine who finds herself at a crossroads in life. She's about to sacrifice something she loves very much to help someone else. I wanted her to find some joy as she could really use it. I loved the open way Sally Clements writes about her main characters. Mel and Heath are completely different, but it's clear from the start that they are made for each other, which made the story extra romantic.
Melody Swan is looking for a man she can grow old with and settle down with. Just without all the passion. Heath Starr comes to Meadowsweet to photograph the landscape. The furthest thing from his mind was women and relationships considering his last relationship didn't end so well. But when Mel offers to be his tour guide, he can't resist.
Love For Beginners by Sally Clements was one emotional, stunning story about finding your soul mate, conquering your fears and finding second chances in life.
Heath and Mel's characters were such a perfect fit in the story. Mel's timidness and commitment issues and Heath's "ladyslayer" reputation were put on display.
Changes made and some surprises pave the way for a phenomenally beautiful read. Both Heath and Mel challenge each other without steam rolling each others characters. Their boundaries were drawn and tested with some surprising outcomes.
Love For Beginners by Sally Clements was one delightful read. 5 Delightful Stars! *ARC Received from the Publisher for an honest review.
Very enjoyable quick read! Melody struggles with her confidence and desires when it comes to men. Heath is the ultimate player never taking relationships seriously. Two people couldn't be more wrong for each other but.... Grab this one to find out what happens. I highly recommend it.
A fun quick read novella. I really enjoyed the story of how two opposites try to fight off the attraction between them. Will a one night encounter satisfy both of them. I recommend this book for a fun enjoyable read.
**This novella was given to me by the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.**
Love for Beginners takes Melody Swan, a local mechanic, on a personal journey of self-discovery. She is under the impression that she is a cold person. A non-sexual person. Undesirable and unable to desire. She wants someone to share her life with but, she has a huge aversion to losing herself to a passionate relationship. That means -- no sex, for one. She meets Heath Starr, her friend and colleague's brother, who helps her learn who she is.
Heath, coming into town with his own issues, has no intention of getting involved with anyone, let alone someone who is as "cold" as Melody. But through countless interaction, he finds her to be desirable, yet safe because of her aversion to passion. Of course, those assumptions begin to shatter as they both get to know each other.
This was just an average read for me, but not for the reasons you'd think. The characters were fantastic, the bones of the plot were really strong. This could have easily been a 4 or 5 star story had it been executed better. It was too short, too fast, too choppy, too narrow. I really wanted to get inside the main characters heads a little more than I did.
I really thought Heath was a great male lead - not too cocky, not too demanding. He was flirtatious, fun, kind, and attractive. He intrigued me quite a bit, so it was fun watching his interactions with Melody. He teased her, comforted her, made her laugh. He was just a great character. I just wish he was developed more than he was. There was so much left of him to be fleshed out and it just wasn't.
Melody was a decent character, too, but I feel like we got all of her insecurities and weaknesses and not enough of her strengths. I wanted a little more internal struggle/dialogue from her when she was making her decisions to act on various urges. I wanted to see her feelings for Heath unfold a bit more fluidly. A bit more openly. It was a quick turn of a page and I missed the development.
I did like her reaction to the big revelation that her mother dropped on her. I felt like Melody was at her most vulnerable in that moment, and would have loved to have seen more of that while she was struggling with Heath.
The story concluded, but it was so short! So quick. Blink and you miss it. I did love Melody's creative way of conveying her feelings to Heath, but it felt a bit flat. Granted, this IS a novella - there's only so much you can write before it turns into a full blown novel, but I just feel that there was so much more to be desired by the end. But maybe that was Clements intention, who knows? :)
Overall, I did enjoy the story for what it gave me. It wasn't a bad read at all. I just kept wanting more. There was just a lot more that Clements could have done. I still want more Melody and Heath -- and I would read another story with them as the main characters, if Clements writes one! *hint, hint*
We have all had those types of relationships that fail time and time again to the point were you wish you could sign up for some type of class to get some real education and learning how to love.
Of course there are endless books or tapes to listen to or watch but none of them can ever teach you the real lessons one needs. Getting in knee deep in a relationship and learning the what and who is the best way, as they say we learn from our mistakes.
In the new Sally Clements read this is the life of Melody Swan, she's looking for a man who can share her hopes and dreams, don't we all?
But Melody swore she would never lose herself to passion, so when sexy make my knees go weak and my brain mush Heath Starr makes his appearance Melody sees him as the perfect candidate for having fun but not getting serious, just the kind of practice she needs to learn how to get comfortable with a man.
Heath has pretty much been through the relationship ringer himself and he would rather focus on his outdoor activities than the sexy inside ones, but Melody cuts him a deal he can't refuse. So our characters end up in a rustic cabin isolated from the world and suddenly passion intervenes and Melody wants more than just now, and Heath well he swore he would never break another woman's heart so what now?
I have always liked Sally 's books and this one was no different, it was fun and upbeat charming and had a nice touch of elegance to it. I liked that the heroine was trying something new to learn how to get comfortable with a man before losing it all just for the passion of a new romance, it showed that she was willing to learn but I would not say her method was of the best as let's face it making a guy your "tester" can get very awkward , all though in this case it had a lovely outcome.
Heath was a very nice character that I very much enjoyed, he was the friendly and confident type of hero that is always a plus when it comes to men, no one wants the 'am so insecure I never kiss or this or that' kind, you want him to at least have some form of a go getting attitude which Heath totally had. Him letting Melody have the lead in the little I learn from this game was very sweet, his actions melted my heart.
I am taking away a message of when we try something new we discover so much more of life and about ourselves, so never be afraid to try everything at least once.
I recommend this book to all romance fans and those that love a good sexy romantic afternoon read!
4.5 star review "Lessons in play teaches a couple how to love"
I struggled with this one. It was slow going, but I stuck with it and it got better.
Mel turned me off from the beginning with her desire for a companionship only no-sex relationship. She was so skittish with men that she flinched at virtually all contact. I'm not sure how she could've had a fun companionable relationship with a man even if there wasn't sex. It just seems to me like she would've gotten a cat or dog for companionship and stopped even trying to date. Her mother basically lied to her daughter her entire life and demonized men. It's pretty messed up.
Heath has a reputation as a player and even has the nickname of 'ladyslayer'. He's helping out at Mel's garage, because they're overwhelmed with Alice, Mel's co-owner and Health's sister, being out of commission. He volunteers in an effort to show his father that his younger brother can run the business just as well as he can. He needs his brother to take over when their father retires, because he wants to be a nature photographer. Coming to Virginia will also give him an opportunity to take some photographs and Mel can show him the perfect place. Mel agrees to take Heath only if he will help her become more comfortable with men.
Regardless of the chemistry between the couple, they both have some things they need to figure out. Mel needs to decide if she can trust Heath with her heart. Heath didn't come looking for a relationship and needs to decide if he wants one and how that will work when he is out of the country for 3 months photographing.
Overall, it's a decent read if you can get passed Mel's strange behavior and thoughts. Heath basically makes this a worthwhile read. It's a pretty short story and the relation progresses, so it reads quickly.

I got this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review..
This book is like a cozy romance for me. This story is about a girl named Melody ( Mel) who is a co- owner of an all female garage service. She has a nick name called the "Ice queen" That is because she has never felt anything sexual with a man, and the very touch of a man makes her sick. That was until her friends brother came into town to help with their case load.
Alice is her friend and also co-owner who fell and broke her foot. She was off work forever and the work kept piling up and customers where starting to get angry. Her brother offered to help out because he had some tricks up his sleeve. He also had a nickname. The "Lady slayer"
Heath was good at what he does. His father wants him to take over the family business so he can retire. The problem is that he doesn't want to work on cars for the rest of his life. He wants to take photographs. He was planning something big with national geographic, and if he got this job it would be his big break.
Heath Noticed Mel when he first came to work. He remembered her from when Alice was in college. He liked her. The only problem was that she was not interested. One day Mel told him her secret and he offered a solution. He was going to use himself for her to get used to a man's touch and be able to have a relationship. Like all love stories. Heath falls for Mel.
Mel cannot fall for Heath because her mother has in it her head that men like him will run and leave her alone and having to raise her family by herself. That was until her mother told her a secret that she has been hiding for all of Mel's life. Now Mel doesn't know what she wants, and she only has days to find out before it is too late.
I occasionally had trouble connecting with the characters, but I really enjoyed the ending. Great read for a rainy afternoon
Full Review -
I picked up Love for Beginners because I had a short window of time open in my reading schedule, and a story about a mechanic sounded like fun. I have enjoyed quite a few Entangled novellas, so I was eager to jump into another one. While I occasionally had trouble connecting with the characters, I found this an entertaining afternoon read.
Melody and her friends run a garage, and it’s shop policy to employ only female mechanics. After Alice breaks her ankle, though, Mel and Betty are run ragged trying to keep up with repairs flooding the shop. Alice’s brother, Heath, agrees to fill in for her, and the women are so desperate for help they agree. Mel has reservations, however. Heath has a reputation of being a ladyslayer, and the one time they met, he didn’t impress her. She resolves to keep her distance while he’s working with them, regardless of how charming or good looking he is.
Betty has other plans, though, and sets them up on a date, under the guise that the women are treating him to dinner for helping them out. Betty promptly backs out, leaving Mel with hostess duties. She gamely wines and dines their new employee, surprising herself by telling him things she’s never confided to anyone else. She spills her greatest secrets to him, and for the life of her, can’t figure out why.
4 Stars! If you love a book that’s short, sweet, romantic, and heated between the sheets, this is the book for you. Melody Swan owns a garage with her three best friends and when one of her friends gets injured and is unable to work, a brother of one of Melody’s best friend’s steps in to help out. But he has his own agenda. Heath Starr only agreed to help because he needs to photograph nature to be able to land his dream job, and why not the beautiful town of Meadowsweet. But neither Heath nor Melody knew what was going to happen when they began working and spending more time together. Their attraction builds, both of them denying the obvious, fighting every spark between them. But soon when they find themselves alone in a cabin in the middle of the woods does the spark finally ignite and they have no other reason to stop what is brewing between them. But then something comes up, forces them apart, hurting them both in the process. You’ll just have to read the book to find out though. This book is cute and has a good amount of steam for this kind of novel. It’s a quick, one sitting read with minimum angst, for if you’re in the mood for a feel good book, you’ve found your answer.
Under the Hood is a funny, romantic novella featuring three women that are setting up a garage staffed by female mechanics catering towards a female clientele. They are tired of men patronizing them & thinking there is no way they know about cars. This is Melody's story. Melody has decided that she doesn't believe sex is a necessary part of a relationship. After being hurt in the past, she wanted a comfortable loving relationship based on respect. When that falls apart, she isn't sure what to expect other than that she, herself, is unlovable. Enter Heath, Alice's brother who has come to fill in as mechanic since Alice is injured. Heath is out to prove Melody wrong & is ready to "let her practice" on him.
Sally has a very entertaining writing style that manages to hit the right tone between romance & comedy. In the short frame of the novella, she still manages to get us introduced to all of the partners & manages to get us all invested in them & their futures. The plot is simple but the journey leading to the finale is funny & enjoyable. Melody comes across as a tough strong woman but we get glimpses into her vulnerable side under that shell. Heath is secure in his confidence but is willing to give up the lead.
I received an eARC copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Here is my honest review.
This is the first book I have read in the Under the Hood series yet it can be read without having read the first book. The series follows a group of women trained as mechanics that band together and open their own garage. I think this is such a great setting for a romance book. Mel was fairly likeable as the heroine. She is shy and hesitant about love - which is a bit of a stretch. I think if there had been a little more development to highlight her shyness and tomboy spirit it would have been more believable. Heath (what a name for a romance hero, right?) is such a laid-back, yet hard-working guy it was hard to believe he was from New York City. However he was super sweet yet completely a guyat the same time. One thing that Clements did that I appreciated was that both Mel and Heath were determined to reach out for the happily ever after - even though Mel beat him to it!
In Love for Beginners (Under the Hood #2) by Sally Clements , Melody Swan is part of an all women mechanic shop. She is doing great with her two friends but after one of them had an accident, now they need a mechanic to help them out in the meantime. Melody takes care of the office part of the business, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know how to work on cars, but if she spends a lot of time doing one thing the other gets neglected.
So while looking for a temporary mechanic, on the side Melody is looking for a man to share her life with, she wants to share her hopes and dreams, but the one thing she will not accept is passion. She knows what passion can lead to and how it can burn out and then end things, she wants a companion for the rest of her life and passion will not be taken into consideration. Read More...
Melody Swan owns a mechanic shop run by females but when they fall behind due to an employee being out due to an injury she asks her brother to fill in. When Melody meets up with Heath again she remembers his reputation as a ladyslayer and is surprised to feel sparks of passion when she thinks her sexuality is dormant. Heath is only in town temporarily and responds to her advances and agrees to try to teach her about sex if she will help him with his photography shoot. Since his last relationship ended due to feelings not being reciprocated it sounds easy enough... This book built slowly and seeing Melody come out of her shell and Heath responding to her inexperience made it come alive. It could have had a bit more heat to it but the ending made up for it. I received an advanced reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
4 1/2 stars I really loved Mel's quiet insitence that she was not looking for a sexual relationship. I couldn't believe the things that her Mom would tell her about men, and then to find out the truth about everything! Damn! I loved that Heath had made up his mind what he was going to do about his family before he came to town and had a plan. I also loved how perfectly both Mel and Heath's plans fell apart when they were near each other, and then far apart. Nothing goes as planned and they both have to deal with the fallout. Mel and Heath have some fantastic chemistry, and when they do come clean to each other at the end, fantastic! And in front of his family, no less. Sally writes the best stories, I know each time I read one of her books I'll have a good time while reading the book. Her story lines are fresh, her characters believable and it's so easy not to put it down.
Love for Beginners by Sally Clements was a good read. This book takes you through the life of a woman, who just lost the custody of her kids and needs a job. Also through the life of a man who grew up thinking he was never going to become a preacher, but became one after he had finished with college because he wanted to live a life of service. This book sends an excellent message of how to help people and not believe every rumor you hear. The thing I did not like about it was that the main male character was supposed to be a preacher, but he did not act very preacher like. He seemed like the average everyday man, and so it made this book seem un-believable. I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.
Melody is the owner of a garage who is short handed because one of her mechanics is injured. Heath is the injured mechanics brother who is helping out. They are attracted to each other, but Melody is frightened by her feelings and breaks things off. She changes her mind and they live happily ever after.
It was really hard for me to connect with the characters in this novel. Melody was very conflicted about her feeling and relationships. Heath was almost to go to be true. Overall it was an OK book, but I don't know that I would read another one in the series.
Careful this might have a few spoilers Hmm not sure about this book, it was not terrible but not great either. The first few pages were kind of confusing to start off. I also thought the title somewhat reminded me of a self-help kind of book. You can find my full review here: http://myreads.booklikes.com/post/887...
Love for Beginners is the second novella in the under The Hood Series. This book was a super cute, fun and enjoyable read. Love for Beginners is not just to read about Melody's love life it is for you to fall in love and read until the end. I really enjoyed the story of how two opposites try to fight off the attraction between them. Will a one night encounter satisfy both of them.
Mel and Heath's story has its ups and downs. It's also a sweet read, but compared to Alice and Mark's, Mel and Heath have more issues and more drama. There were instances that feel really awkward -dialogues and situations, but the totality of the story is still good.
