About the author

Ryen Santana

Ryen Santana is an author who has spent her life weaving stories—first in the world of fanfiction and now in dark, emotionally charged novels. A mother of two, she balances the chaos of parenthood with the equally chaotic process of crafting narratives filled with morally grey characters, deep betrayals, and enough trauma to keep her readers up at night.

Her love for storytelling began in her early teens, where she honed her skills writing sprawling, 500k+ word fanfics inspired by Twilight, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and, of course, One Direction. If a fandom existed, she either wrote for it or devoured every story it had to offer.

When she’s not writing, she can be found indulging in her other passions—reading (obviously), rock climbing, spending all of the money she earns from books on commissioning art of her characters, and consuming unhealthy amounts of caffeine. She also enjoys rotting in bed whenever life allows, though with two small children, those moments are rare and precious.

Now, with her original works, she continues to explore the themes that first captivated her: love, power, revenge, and the darker sides of human nature. But this time, the stakes are higher, the characters more twisted, and the endings never quite what you expect.

“The line between hunter and hunted is thinner than you think, Jack. You’ve been walking it for so long, you can no longer see which side you’re on.”

This was such a fab short story looking into the history of Whitechapel, a retelling of Jack the Ripper, highlighting the gaps in history that we will never truly understand and giving recognition to the names of the women who were brutally murdered.

“The shadows were not done with Whitechapel. And perhaps, just perhaps, they never had been.”

First off this book is creepy as hell, but frankly I’ll read anything Ryen Santana writes, even if it keeps me up at night lol

One of my favorite things about Ryen’s writing style is how easily you’re pulled into the universe she creates, and this book did not disappoint. She did an excellent job at drawing you into the unsettling, atmospheric scenes that feel all too real. The journey is both disturbing and fascinating, and as someone who doesn’t typically reach for a horror story, I really enjoyed the mindfuckry that Sanguine had to offer.

As someone who has always been fascinated by the history of Jack the Ripper, this was such an interesting read. It's dark, gritty, and makes you question reality as you know it.

History never did know the real person responsible for the murders but the horror and pain left behind lived on. Sanguine was masterfully written to bring to light the crumbling sanity of one person and the blurred lines of truth.

As you slowly read through this novella, you can just tell when the narrator starts to question his own sanity. His complete belief that there are darker forces behind these crimes begins to show cracks and we as the readers are left wondering if the narrator was really the one responsible or if he was just a convenient scapegoat.

This was such an intriguing book because the whole journey is full of pain and suffering. As with any horrific crime, it's important to bring about awareness and respect for the victims who's voices are overshadowed by the perpetrators and I feel like Ryen does this so well. These women deserved to be remembered and respected.

Sanguine was a very eerie window into a fractured mind. I went into this read totally blind and it absolutely did not disappoint! Ryen’s writing is descriptive and incredibly vivid. I could totally picture myself walking alongside Jack down misty cobblestone streets.

Not to mention, the interior design of the book was incredible with some creepy (in the best possible way) illustrations! This was an excellent Halloween read that will keep haunting me for a long time.

This read was completely creepy and enthralling. It truly felt like time ceased to exist as I read this book because I was so interested in the story and where it was going. It weirded me out but clearly it kept my attention and I loved it. Highly recommend, especially as we are still in spooky season!!

This has great reviews but maybe I just didn’t get it. I wasn’t super creeped out like I wanted or expected to be.

Sanguine is a gothic fever dream where nothing is as it seems. Not even Jack the Ripper. Ryen Santana weaves horror, history, and haunting beauty into a tale that leaves you questioning every shadow. Is he mad? Is he guilty? I have no idea. I've read this book twice now and I'm still questioning everything.

I especially loved the acknowledgments, Santana honors the women lost instead of glorifying the myth of the Ripper. It’s powerful, respectful, and exactly what this genre needs.

Ryen is a master of suspense. This short read kept me spiraling, and constantly second-guessing. And the PROSE 🤌🏼

For something only 90 pages long, I was engrossed and immersed. The writing and lack of a reliable narrator pulled me in so quickly. Another 5 star by Ryen 🙏🏼 An auto-buy author for me 🙂‍↕️
