I feel the need to rewrite this review because I’ve been really unhappy with the way it turned out. I wrote that I loved these books, and that I didn’t know how that had happened, and then I tried to reason it out but ultimately failed to explain what it was about this series that has captivated me so much. So here we go, Attempt No. 2.
Let’s get the facts straight first: This series consists of four full-length novels plus (technically) three short stories, but I’m only really counting Opal because the other two are only like two pages each and don’t really contribute much to this universe or these characters, whereas Opal does.
The four main instalments in this series (and my initial reactions to them) are:
Book One, The Raven Boys, in which we are introduced to Blue, Gansey, Adam, and Noah. Ronan is mentioned in passing. I predict some twists and scoff at the idea of true love and psychics. I fail to see the complexity and beautiful diversity of the characters. I end up writing a snobbish review, lecturing from my high horse about how boring and predictable and unfinished everything seems. If we are to be truthful, we are obligated to say that I embarrass myself, and I should really just delete these old reviews.
Book Two, The Dream Thieves, in which we spend a lot of time with Ronan and learn of his completely weird, totally random, yet utterly delightful ability to pull stuff out of his dreams. I marvel at the perfect physicality of Ronan’s world, wishing I could see things a little more like he does. Against my better judgement, I am captivated by Kavinsky, because, fuck, even if he’s a misogynistic asshole and I’m really glad he died, my heart beat a little faster every time I turned the page and he was there. Adam acts like an asshole and I fail to see this as an aftereffect of his abuse. I fall hopelessly in love with Ronan, because Maggie Stiefvater has floored me: This boy I did not care for at all, that I may even have hated a little in The Raven Boys, the boy Gansey is afraid people will cut themselves on, who acts like a pit-bull and looks like a snake, has the truest and most unshakable sense of morality and loyalty out of any of them. I learn of his family, of his dreamer-dad and dreamt-mum, and I think, fuck.
Book Three, Blue Lily, Lily Blue, in which Blue’s mother is missing, a sleeper who never slept is found, and a villain is vanquished without being killed. I bitch about Ronan not getting a single POV chapter, but his character is built upon still, and his position as my favourite cemented. I learn to like Adam again, and I start to adore Blue and Gansey, not separately (I already did), but together. I miss Noah but delight in Gwenllian’s special brand of crazy and Malory’s fidgety academism. The Grey Man starts to grow on me, and start to realise that this series might just be something else, after all.
Book Four, The Raven King, in which our story finds an ending people are somewhat rightfully disappointed in. I am captivated from page one, because Gansey is a king, and this was the year he was going to die. Ronan and Adam find to each other. I fail to see the value of Henry’s contribution or how he, too, is delightful in his own way. Opal, as the Orphan Girl, is brought to the animal world from her realm of dreams. Glendower has been dead the whole time. Noah dies again, and this time, he stays dead. Blue kisses Gansey and he, too, dies, but he, thankfully, doesn’t stay dead. We cut to the epilogue, and it all feels so incomplete. I think, this can’t be it, and but I still have so many questions. I fail to see the point of the story, and because of that, I think, I have to read this again, which I do, and that’s when I fall in love because that’s when I see it: this story is a near-perfect self-contained universe.
Months pass. I don’t stop thinking about these books or the characters, and I decide I should read them again. I listen to Will Patton’s gruff voice tell this tale of magic and mystery and love, and even though I am unconvinced of this odd choice of narrator at first, I fall in love with his rendition as well, because it’s perfect. I take my time, I listen for the details (they’re there) and stare in wonder at all the things I didn’t remember or missed (they’re there). I finish it, again, and, again, it stays on my mind. But now I see, clearer than ever: Maggie Stiefvater doesn’t treat her readers like idiots. She doesn’t spell things out for us, and she makes us pay attention. And I realise: This story was never about finding a dead-but-not-dead Welsh king and having a wish fulfilled. No, this story is about a group of friends who share an adventure that doesn’t pay off in the way they had thought, but wasn’t a pointless experience in any way, because Ronan learns to live with his losses, and Adam learns that he can be more than he fears he will become, and Gansey learns to better understand his privileges, and Blue learns that it’s okay to let yourself go sometimes. This story, to me, is the embodiment of the journey is the destination. I find it remarkable in many ways, from Maggie Stiefvater’s wonderful style over the way the character voices contrast and complete each other to how seamlessly hard topics are woven into what is, in essence, a magical adventure. I try to formulate these thoughts of mine. I fail, but I post it anyway, a restless fury staying with me because I fail to put into words what this story means to me.
Weeks pass, this time, and Opal is released. I await it, anxiously, and then I read it, stupidly, at 4 am on barely 4 hours of sleep. But, of course, it’s perfect, and, of course, it leaves me craving more but, at the same time, it gives me a greater sense of closure than The Raven King ever did. I read it again the following day, and find a mirror: Here, too, are things I missed, and here, too, are things I overlooked when I first tore through it. It, too, is remarkable.
This is where we are, and the fact remains: I love these books. I love how they are written, not only because I find the language Maggie Stiefvater uses beautiful but because the way she writes this story and these characters speaks to me of a deep understanding of life, a view of the world I can relate to. I love how the audiobooks are narrated because Will Patton’s husky voice makes this story sound like a fairytale. I love these characters; their awfulness and strangeness, but also their realness in a genre awash with I’m-not-pretty-but-I-am heroines and hello-fellow-kids heroes. I love their relationships because they are built on a foundation of mutual trust, respect, and friendship. I love these books because even though I was unconvinced of them at first, that uncertainty has turned into adoration. I love these books, and I hope that will remain true for a long time. Now there is nothing left to do but wait for the Dreamer Trilogy, which I do, anxiously, because I hope I will love those books, too, but I am afraid that I will not, even if Maggie Stiefvater has not disappointed me so far.
(PS: I still highly recommend you read Maggie Stiefvater’s own recaps of books 1, 2, and 3. They’re hilarious. Really.)

PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THE SYNOPSIS. These books are not about romance- it certainly plays a part, but it is so much more about love as a whole- found love and family love and chosen love. Do not let the romance BS fool you. This series is a beautiful masterpiece. It is about growing up and socioeconomic differences and real life just as much as it is about mystical forests and mythological Welsh kings.
Plot
If I had to rewrite the synopsis but didn't have to sound professional, I'd say this: A group of private school boys, the raven boys, meet the non-psychic daughter of a psychic, catalyzing the boys' search for a mythical Welsh king. When they aren't traipsing on their Virginia ley line, the teens deal with their families, their futures, and their lives as "normal" teens. While this doesn't do it justice, I think it is a much better gist than the shitty one printed on the books (no offense Maggie).
Fair warning, these books don't have a plot that speeds along, per se. I've heard people compare this series to a long road trip, and I couldn't agree more, so make sure to buckle up for the ride. The plot does get spotty at times, but Stiefvater makes up for it by making the brilliant characters the focal point. Speaking of which...
Characters
I can't say enough good things about all of the characters. They all weave together and banter and end up driving the story. There is no single main character, but I would argue there are four, each spotlighted in a different book:
-Adam (TRB): An aspiring rags-to-riches story. Loyal to a fault, workaholic, often grounds the group. I relate his need for independence and abborhence for pity, despite wanting to feel less alone.
-Ronan (TDT): Your almost typical jackass bad-boy. Will do anything for Gansey as long as it doesn't include stopping some minorly illegal street racing and school ditching. I love his blatant honesty, scorching sense of humor, and not stereotypical homosexuality. Possibly one of the most complex characters in the books.
-Blue (BLLB): The sensible but eccentric non-psychic daughter of a psychic. Unsure of her future despite being surrounded by people that see it. She's the catalyst for the books and much of their mystical journey. I love that she is hot-headed but still understands her limits (unlike Ronan).
-Gansey (TRK): Entitled, but humble, rich academic. Dedicates his life to the search for Welsh king Glendower and doesn't know what life holds after that, the glue for the core friend group. I love his endless ambition and loyalty.
Writing Style
Finally, the cherry on top of all of this is Stiefvater's beautiful writing style. It is lyrical almost to the point that it takes itself too seriously, but it is saved by nuggets of subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, humor. Imagine your funniest friend reading some old Greek myth but adding funny commentary as they go. That doesn't even do it justice. It brings the whole masterpiece together.
So, if you're looking for YA fantasy without battles and heaps of mortal dangers or crazy dystopian governments and a big rush of plot, I suggest The Raven Cycle series. Bonne lecture.

This series ruined my life in 2018. I was obsessed for a good few months.

Come potrei mai riassumere quattro libri, personaggi così sfaccettati e particolari che mi sembra di averli conosciuti di persona, una ricerca spasmodica e pericolosa, realismo magico e magia onirica, incubi e sogni che si danno battaglia, la paura di diventare grandi, la responsabilità di vivere senza aspettative.
Blue vive in una casa di veggenti, ma non ha un vero e proprio potere divinatorio, solo una terribile maledizione che pende sulla nuca del suo primo amore. Il suo destino s’intreccerà con quello di quattro ragazzi alla ricerca di un re leggendario sepolto su una linea di prateria. Ognuno di loro nasconde uno o più segreti, ognuno di loro cerca la propria strada.
Anche se le ship si sprecheranno, la componente romance secondo me è in sottofondo, non è il tema principale, non è un 𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑠𝑦, per capirci.
Il ꜰᴏᴜɴᴅ ꜰᴀᴍɪʟʏ spadroneggia, nella sua complessità e nelle sue mille sfaccettature.
Scegliersi una famiglia, trovarla, riscoprirla, amicizie sincere eppure velate da gelosie e insicurezze, amicizie che nascondono sentimenti profondi e repressi, sentimenti che un giorno potranno essere definiti con la parola amore.
Se il primo libro è introduttivo, il secondo e il terzo sono una vera esplosione. Giunta al quarto le aspettative erano così alte che alcune scelte mi hanno delusa, avrei voluto sapere di più, e le novelle sono abbastanza inutili, interessanti, sì, ma non aggiungono o tolgono nulla.
Vorrei anche fare un lunghissima, noiosissima digressione riguardo la conoscenza del latino da parte di quattro ragazzi americani che frequentano un liceo. Mi permetto di dire che ho trovato le loro lezioni molto improbabili, molto romanzate, molto fantasy.
Detto questo è promossa a pieni voti! (si era capito, no?)
Consigliata ai giovanissimi (no spicy, no dark, qualche brividino, ma salutare), e a più vegliardi (come la sottoscritta).
Lo stile della Maggie Stiefvater è impareggiabile, meravigliosamente intenso e immersivo, unico nella sua originalità, imprevedibile, a tratti poetico.
Un’autrice troppo sottovalutata, soprattutto in Italia.

When the plot at the same time has some characters in a cute coming of age storyline while others are fighting for their life in a horror thriller and also cuts to others eating yogurt to then pulling things out of dreams.

One of my all-time favorite series! I loved the story, the characters, the creativeness, all of it. I didn’t want it to end and I struggled with letting it go. Even now, over a year later, I’m still extremely passionate about this series and wouldn’t mind revisiting it in the near future.

Questa saga è qualcosa di incredibile e unico.
Ha qualcosa di estremamente incalzante, rassicurante, interessante, affascinante e allo stesso tempo ordinario. Lo stile della scrittrice è estremamente semplice e diretto; una pagina segue l'altra con facilità ed è difficile staccarsi.

Ha qualcosa di estremamente incalzante, rassicurante, interessante, affascinante e allo stesso tempo ordinario. Lo stile della scrittrice è estremamente semplice e diretto; una pagina segue l'altra con facilità ed è difficile staccarsi.

[Spoiler-free review]
A wonderful journey through modern magic.
“The Raven Cycle” has everything one could possibly wish for in a contemporary fantasy series, from haunted yet dreamy forests to destined quests and psychic ghosts. I have read the series several times, experiencing it slightly differently every time, since the way this story is spun allows for new revelations to be discovered each read through. In my opinion, there is no author better suited to my wishes and desires than Stiefvater, and her writing style is so extraordinary that you cannot help but get lost in her words and the world she lays out, piece by piece, until you feel it intertwining with your own reality.
Starting with ominous prophecies as the only paranormal thing, the series gets continuously more magical, but always in a way that seems to make sense – insofar that magical happenings can ever make sense. The books are full of wonders, strange revelations and unexpected, brilliant plot twists that are sure to keep you on your toes. Additionally, I can almost guarantee you that you will fall in love with its characters and their individual story lines and developments as well as their friendships.
Another thing I truly cherish about this series is the certain element of dark academism it brings with it, through fancy private schools and through the quest to find a long-lost Welsh king prophesied to grant those who wake him any of their hearts’ desires. Notable here is also that the series is diverse in a way that is not pushy but includes the diverse elements as naturally as anything else, which is a trait I always value in any kind of book.
In short, this is my all-time favourite series whose writing style is nothing short of excellent and I cannot recommend it to anyone enough.
Since Stiefvater is currently working on a spin-off series based around the character Ronan Lynch, I am excited to soon read more about all my favourite characters.

I can see why this series gets a lot of love. It’s weird and wacky and so different to other fantasy reads. It is very much about a bunch of weird stuff happening to a group of very normal teenagers with very abnormal lives.
It’s actually a bit like reading a dream, in a way.
There’s magic, yes, but not in a shape you’re used to seeing (awesome).
There’s found family, but it’s the subtle kind, only really seen in the way the characters show up for each other, rather than any particularly cute actions or pretty words.
There’s a quest for a favour that isn’t what the story’s about at all.
There were times when I felt like I was being told things, rather than shown them. And there are some threads that I don’t feel were really properly tied off at the end. But I didn’t mind at all — the core characters are where the action’s at at that point. The peril! The drama!
This series definitely feels like one big book cut into four volumes. The end of book one makes absolutely no sense until you read book two. The end of book two feels a bit random even after you’ve read book three, but at least then it makes sense. Actually, no, it makes the most sense once you’re reading book four.
Books three and four work really well together to bring the story to a close.
Just when you think you’ve got the gist of how the ley line works, we get introduced to dreamers. Just as you wrap your head around dreamers, we get more bizarre ley line magic that stretches your understanding even more. And then a magician. And a mirror. And a frikkin tree-light. Piccola premessa: quando ho scoperto questa serie ero titubante per via della mole del volume unico, ma avevo deciso comunque di prenotarlo su mlol, quando poi mi arriva l'email della disponibilità l'ho preso subito ed iniziato. Per chi usa questo servizio sa che c'è un limite di tempo per il quale puoi tenerlo, nella mia regione (Abruzzo) è di 13 giorni. Perché vi sto dicendo questo? Perché dei suddetti giorni me ne sono avanzati tre. Perciò capite bene quanto sia stato scorrevole considerando che ho una vita (più o meno 😂) e che sono 4 volumi in uno più degli extra.
Sono stata super felice di aver intrapreso questo viaggio perché ne è valsa sicuramente la pena. È stato bellissimo, è uno di quei libri di cui difficilmente vorresti staccarti perché succedono sempre una cosa dietro l'altra e quindi non hai proprio tempo di annoiarti. Tra l'altro anche per tutti i vari pov che si alternano e che creano maggiore curiosità e suspense.
Perché tutti e quattro i libri seguono la ricerca disperata di Gansey di trovare un antico re, Owen Glendower, che secondo le leggende giace addormentato sotto una montagna in attesa di essere risvegliato. Ovviamente in questa ricerca si uniranno anche i suoi amici: Adam, Ronan e Noah. Successivamente verrà coinvolta anche una ragazza, Blue, appartenente ad una famiglia di veggenti e che tra le altre cose, alcune di loro hanno l'abilità di parlare con gli spiriti di chi morirà entro l'anno. Inoltre una profezia pende sulla sua testa.
Devo dire che già dall'inizio mi sono immersa completamente nella storia grazie al worldbuilding che è stato pazzesco! Dalle ambientazioni alle abilità dei personaggi, anche perché il realismo magico a me fa impazzire. Anche perché ci sono molti poteri strani e affascinanti 👀
I personaggi nonostante siano molti sono tutti ben caratterizzati ed ognuno ha la sua importanza nella storia. Tra i protagonisti ho amato tantissimo Adam che molti lo reputano "str0nzo" secondo me semplicemente incompreso..
Perché Adam non ha avuto una vita per niente facile con i suoi genitori, nonostante la giovane età, e questo l'ha portato ad avere paura di affezionarsi a qualcuno oltre che a credere unicamente sulle sue forze..
E se lo dice Ronan dev'essere assolutamente vero. Perché lui è quel personaggio meravigliosamente arrabbiato sempre, in grado di distruggere qualunque cosa per una semplice parola sbagliata, che dice parolacce e adora le corse con le auto. Eppure ha un cuore gigantesco. Nel primo volume non si noterà tanto, ma poi, quando lo si conosce meglio, ci accorgiamo del ragazzo dannatamente intelligente e leale che è. Non posso non nominare anche il suo corvo-femmina, Motosega 🥹
Gansey è la colonna portante di questa storia e, ovviamente, è impossibile non amarlo. Ha un'intelligenza fuori dal comune ed è ossessionato dalla ricerca di questo antico re per un motivo ben preciso..
Blue, a differenza della sua famiglia, non ha poteri di veggenza, si unirà al gruppo quasi per caso nonostante lei non ha mai voluto avere niente a che fare con i ragazzi corvo della Aglionby Academy (prettamente per ricchi - tranne Adam che non lo è -), in quanto ritenuti spocchiosi per i soldi che hanno. Ma questa avventura sembra chiamarla a gran voce e poi.. lei ha già conosciuto Gansey in circostanze del tutto inaspettate.. 👀
Noah è sicuramente un personaggio misterioso che, arrivati alla fine, vi lascerà con un grandissimo punto interrogativo.. ancora adesso non riesco a trovare un senso a tutto ciò che è successo.
Dico questo perché la storia è molto coinvolgente ma, arrivati ad un certo punto, comincia ad essere un po' confusionaria, alcune cose non vengono spiegate e altrettante sono state prive di senso (vedi uomo-albero che è stato assolutamente inutile 🤔). Ma c'è una cosa in particolare che mi ha scioccata totalmente e che non vi dirò perché sarebbe uno spoiler gigantesco, ma nonostante varie discussioni con altre persone, non siamo proprio riusciti a venirne a capo e a trovarci un senso..
Ma posso dirvi che, nonostante questa cosa, sono rimasta illogicamente soddisfatta di averlo letto perché i personaggi sono davvero, davvero ben fatti e ti restano dentro. Una ship in particolare mi è entrata sottopelle (evito di scrivere quale per evitare spoiler, ma credo abbiate capito di quale parlo).
Gli extra sono stati molto belli, soprattutto quello su Opal che arricchisce molto una certa relazione 🥹❤️🩹
Menzione d'onore per alcuni personaggi secondari che ho adorato:
- La famiglia di Blue, composta da donne, e che ho adorato perché con i loro pregi e difetti sono state molto realistiche;
- La famiglia Lynch, che sono tra i personaggi più misteriosi della serie 👀
- Kavinsky, per chi ha letto la serie probabilmente verrà un colpo perché è stato uno str0nzo, ma a me è piaciuto, soprattutto per certe tensioni (🔥) che ha creato la sua presenza (l'ho shippato con .....? Sì.. lo ammetto.. 👉👈), ovviamente per quanto mi sia piaciuto la SHIP regina non si tocca ... AR ... ❤️🔥;
- Il signor Gray: inizialmente mi ha scombussolata, sono stata piuttosto confusa, ma poi mi è piaciuto perché sicuramente è stato più padre di un certo padre...
- Helen, la sorella di Gansey, donna tosta che ho adorato!
- Henry, che avrebbe potuto benissimo essere uno dei protagonisti e che ho shippato molto di più con un certo personaggio ...... 👀
In generale ho amato lo stile di scrittura e l'ironia dei personaggi, come ad esempio hanno la particolare predisposizione nel parlare al telefono quando stanno facendo cose tipo, boh, dar fu0co alla gente... è stato micidiale e mi sono fatta molte risate, non solo per questa cosa ovviamente! 🤣 E poi c'è quel tipo di found family che ti scioglie il cuore ❤️
Questo non è un Dark Academia ma ha quelle vibes, anche perché loro sono studenti ed ogni tanto si fanno vedere anche negli ambienti scolastici. Per alcune cose mi ha ricordato molto Dio di illusioni, libro che ho amato tantissimo, sia per il tipo di ambientazione che per alcuni dettagli. Perfetto per l'autunno tra l'altro.
Quindi che posso dirvi? La storia sicuramente vale tantissimo ma se volete leggerlo andateci con i piedi di piombo per quanto riguarda alcune vicende e la parte finale, come detto prima, perché qualunque cosa avrete in mano avrete voglia di lanciarlo da qualche parte.. Io ve l'ho detto! 😂

Not sure what more to say... this is my favorite series, and I simply had to reread (well, relisten to the audiobooks) before the arrival of my OwlCrate Call Down the Hawk book box (which I just found out is on its way!!). I reread all four, plus the short stories that give some additional background. I own the full series, got them signed in person, and basically lost the ability to function when I met Stiefvater, so the books are near and dear to my heart.
I want to say that there are very rarely times when I support a male narrator when a book has a female protagonist, but these audiobooks are KILLER. I cannot imagine anyone else singing "Blue lily, lily blue" or exemplifying how Adam's accent is more noticeable when he's distracted. I will be recommending these books to all fans of fantasy, all fans of world-building, all fans of exquisite description and fanciful details.
I want to say that there are very rarely times when I support a male narrator when a book has a female protagonist, but these audiobooks are KILLER. I cannot imagine anyone else singing "Blue lily, lily blue" or exemplifying how Adam's accent is more noticeable when he's distracted. I will be recommending these books to all fans of fantasy, all fans of world-building, all fans of exquisite description and fanciful details.

Maggie Stiefvater certainly has a different voice in fiction than I'm used to. During the first book I found her descriptions incongruous and distracting, but once I was halfway through the book I had gotten used to it, and found it wonderfully refreshing.
I think she has a knack for writing teens. Teens who have had to mature, and ones who were still their age. She never made them too childish (like so many teen fictions seem to do). Everyone seemed very much... themselves. If that makes any sense. Every character was very different, every path separate yet entwined. She's also wonderful at describing magic... the kind that is both real and fantastical, and makes you believe that perhaps you're spending your time in the wrong pursuits ;)
Really my only gripe was that I felt she lacked something when it came to antagonists. They seemed built up and built up, and then just kind of petered out. Luckily the rest of her story telling more than made up for it.
A nice series to read before bed for sure!

Mettere in fila i miei pensieri riguardo questa saga è sempre complicato, ma cercherò di elaborare senza spoiler.
È complicato perché mi accompagna da così tanto tempo (una decina d'anni ormai e continuerà ancora) che ogni rilettura è una ri-scoperta. Un ritorno a qualcosa che non hai mai avuto, non potrai mai avere, ma è sempre lì ad accoglierti. Lo so, è strano. È difficile non usare la parola "strano" parlando di TRC.
Beati voi che potete leggervelo per la prima volta, perché vorrei poterlo fare anche io.

Quando mi era stato detto che qui avrei trovato un sistema magico particolare, non credevo che sarei rimasta così stupefatta dal risultato. Insomma, non avevo mai visto un sistema magico così originale, con di mezzo veggenti, tarocchi e antichi re gallesi. Forse il continuo balzo di punti di vista è ciò che mi ha fatto storcere il naso. In genere non succede e infatti non mi sarebbe dispiaciuto se i pov fossero stati solo quelli dei ragazzi corvo, ma i pov continuavano ad espandersi anche a personaggi secondari di cui, mi spiace, non mi importava nulla. Come dire, mi sarebbe piaciuto scoprire quelle cose attraverso lo sguardo dei protagonisti, non leggendo il punto di vista di chicchessia.
I protagonisti sono complessi a modo loro, con personalità ben definite e con obiettivi e sogni propri. Mi sarebbe piaciuto poter vedere di più Henry interagire con il gruppetto, ma anche così va bene. Ho adorato il modo in cui la magia si è pian piano fatta strada nelle loro vite (anche se nella vita di qualcuno c'era già). A volte alcuni passaggi sono sembrati non necessari, come se si volesse allungare il brodo, mentre altri sono stati gestiti con maestria. Insomma, Adam è cambiato moltissimo dopo la fine del primo libro (totalmente giustificato, visto ciò che era successo) ma molte delle sue scelte non le ho comprese, o per meglio dire, ci sta l'orgoglio (un po', non esageratamente), ma a volte volevo urlare. Anche Blue in quanto a testardaggine non scherzava, ma le sue scelte sembravano molto coerenti con il suo personaggio.
Ronan mi faceva morire ogni 2x3. L'umorismo, assieme alla complessità e alla magia, sono stati decisamente i suoi punti forti. Decisamente il personaggio che ho preferito di più... Assieme a Gansey. E sì, perché anche lui si è meritato la vetta. Anche lui personaggio complesso, qualcuno che aveva potere ma che non realizzava di usarlo nella vita di tutti i giorni, mai con presunzione, mai con imposizione, ma con semplice gentilezza, chiedendo quasi in punta di piedi, con calma. Questo è ciò che più mi ha stupito del suo personaggio.
E menzione speciale anche a Noah, per cui a tratti ho provato compassione, per cui ho sperato in un lieto fine piacevole, e in cui mi sono immedesimata di più.
Una storia bellissima che sento porterò nel cuore per sempre.

i don't know how to put into words how much i enjoyed reading this series. the storyline, the characters, UGH it's all so good. i love the group of Blue and the Raven Boys in the first book. she knows about her having to burden herself with that thought while constantly hanging out with them, makes her so wary to hang out with them, but she also comes to realize how much she enjoys their company. i also love making Blue and her personality of always assuming things before the other person can even say anything like, I LOVE THAT. i also came to realize how flawed they all are. not to sound rude, but it's true. Gansey being the rich boy that he is, and also his determination to find Glendower and putting all his focus into Glendower. Adam having lived with an abusive father and Ronan having a whole personality change when his father died, and Noah Henry having his mom be Seondeok and wanting to just have friends. I DONT KNOW HOW ELSE TO EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR THIS BOOK AND THESE CHARACTERS. Really though, if you like fantasy and magic with some romance and beautiful friend groups, this is for you.

Ho letto 'The Raven Boys', il primo libro di 'The Raven Cycle', appena uscito in italiano e mi conquistò subito. Ma dopo tanti e tanti anni avevo paura di non ritrovare più la magia che mi aveva catturato e invece mi sono completamente sbagliata! Ho ri-amato tutta la saga!
Maggie Stiefvater ci conduce in un universo onirico e magico, dove incontriamo alberi che parlano latino, linee di prateria che vengono risvegliate e creature che invece dovrebbero rimanere dormienti.
Di solito nelle saghe ci sono momenti meno interessanti, lenti o di stallo. Qui, invece, ogni pagina ci porta a svelare qualcosa di più sulla magia, sui sogni e sui protagonisti.
È uno di quei libri che vorresti finire subito per poi rileggerlo da capo, ogni pezzo si incastra perfettamente per creare una narrazione magica!
Maggie Stiefvater incanta con le sue parole, con i suoi Pov multipli, con una storia piena di magia e di sogni. Incanta con la forza di un gruppo che vuole raggiungere un obiettivo o meglio vuole realizzare un sogno.
Blue è figlia di una veggente e vive insieme ad altre veggenti e, anche se non ha visioni, ha comunque una peculiarità tutta sua, ovvero quella di riuscire ad "ampliare" quelle degli altri.
Alla vigilia di San Marco però riesce a vedere lo spirito di un ragazzo che dice di chiamarsi Gansey, e proprio quel ragazzo, alcuni giorni dopo, si presenta da sua madre per un consulto. Gansey insieme ai suoi amici vuole risvegliare Glendower, un re gallese.
Gansey e i suoi amici frequentano la Aglionby Academy, una facoltosa scuola che ha come emblema il corvo, e per questo i loro studenti vengono chiamati "ragazzi corvo".
Gansey è un ragazzo pieno di amore, uno studente modello e un amico attento.
Blue vive in una casa di veggenti, mentre lei non lo è, e deve convivere con la "maledizione del bacio del vero amore".
Adam vuole fuggire dalla sua vita, dai genitori che non lo hanno mai amato, aspira a una vita agiata, è orgoglioso e non si affida mai agli altri.
Ronan è inquieto, un sognatore che sembra vivere una vita a metà tra la realtà e il sogno.
Noah ha un grandissimo segreto.
Grazie ai vari Pov entriamo nelle vite dei protagonisti, scoprendo i loro desideri, le paure e le vulnerabilità, quello che si cela dietro ai sorrisi o le battutine. Sono tutti dei personaggi con mille sfaccettature, ma io impazzisco per Adam e Ronan, mi hanno completamente conquistata.
Questi ragazzi si scelgono ogni giorno, affrontano le difficoltà insieme, è un gruppo che diventa una famiglia completa quando arriva anche Blue.
E poi c'è anche una piccola parte romantica, con nuovi sentimenti che sbocciano o storie che cercano un finale.
Non faccio spoiler ma una coppia mi ha fatto battere forte il cuore per il modo in cui si sono avvicinati e per la paura di svelare i propri sentimenti.

Non so se ho abbastanza parole per descrivere questa meraviglia. Spesso quando mi chiedono di cosa parla questa saga, rispondo che descriverla è difficile, perché ogni cosa che potrei dire sarebbe troppo approssimativa. In base a dove la si cominci a raccontare, questa potrebbe essere la storia di un gruppo di ragazzi corvo, che frequentano la stessa scuola elitaria, e di una ragazza specchio. O potrebbe essere la storia di un Re Corvo e della sua corte di maghi. O potrebbe essere la storia di una foresta, Cabeswater, dove gli alberi parlano latino e dove i sogni e gli incubi possono diventare reali. Potrei parlare di magia, amicizia, sacrificio, amore. Ma questa saga è molto di più.
Non so esprimere quanto questa storia significhi per me, quanto ho sognato di essere ad Henrietta (la città dove è ambientata) insieme a questi personaggi, che sono diventati come amici di cui conoscevo i pensieri, amici con cui sarei partita in ogni momento per una missione magica nelle foreste della Virginia. Mi sono sentita come se stessi leggendo una parte di me, e ho ADORATO questa cosa. Avevo sempre più fame di parole, anche nei momenti morti della storia, sentivo che tutto era giusto. Per questo dopo il finale (che ho apprezzato molto, tra i pianti a dirotto che mi sono fatta), lasciare andare tutto sarà veramente difficile. È stata la found family più bella che abbia mai letto, e tutti loro vivranno rent free nella mia testa per molto tempo.
La Stiefvater è una maga nella caratterizzazione dei personaggi, ti affezioni persino ai personaggi secondari.
L'ambientazione magica e paranormale è così originale e nuova che ti lascia sempre con il fiato sospeso. Ho davvero apprezzato anche i personaggi femminili, la loro indipendenza e unicità. Come tutte le storie, ha anche i suoi difetti. Forse il personaggio di Henry, nell'ultimo libro, l'ho sentito un po' forzato, anche se ho capito il suo ruolo.

first three books are around three stars, the last one is four. the writing is kind of pretentious, which i enjoy, but that might not be for you so tread cautiously. i feel like these books kind of drag, especially the first three. they took forever to get through, and the ending was very unsatisfying. ronan and adam are lovely and i adore them, but gansey and blue are pretty hit-or-miss. blue teeters the line between relatably angsty teen who's cynical but smart and self victimizing, bland protagonist. her personality didn't shine through in writing nearly as much ad the other characters. gansey had some great moments, and sometimes i was just bored by him. charismatic, smart, rich guy just isn't a very compelling character idea, even if the execution was relatively solid. i didn't mind noah, but that's mostly because i kept forgetting he was there. every time he showed up through the books, i'd be like "oh yeah, this guy. where tf has he been." gansey and blue's relationship was too slow burn to be interesting, like, at all. i didn't care if they got together or not, i was just in it for pynch, which was also not very interesting as a relationship, but i loved the two boys so i stuck it through. henry fucking rocked though. dude was a treasure. he should have shown up way earlier in the books, he was rad af.

[Sul blog TÈ OOLONG DI MEZZANOTTE la recensione completa~]
Lo scenario che fa da sfondo all’evolversi della vicenda è quello del sogno, i cui confini tendono a divenire particolarmente labili all’approssimarsi non soltanto della realtà, ma anche e soprattutto dell’oltretomba – di un altrove che l’autrice, servendosi della prospettiva onirica, delinea con tutto il suo suggestivo carico d’immagini smembrate e disturbanti: cadaveri in decomposizione, ronzii d’insetto, bambine dagli occhi enormi e forme troppo aberranti per essere recepite appieno dalla mente umana, di fatto, sono solo alcune di esse. Ogni ambiente, anche il più apparentemente comune, possiede almeno un elemento fuori posto, nessuno è esattamente chi dovrebbe o sostiene di essere. L’Incubo e la Morte si affermano come i temi principali d’un titolo che non si pone problemi (né, per fortuna, autocensure di sorta) nell’esplorarli a fondo, indugiando quanto basta sui dettagli più macabri e ricorrendo al punto di vista di protagonisti a loro volta contraddistinti dal medesimo binomio di sonno/veglia: l’ultima arrivata in una famiglia di sensitive che si scopre destinata a causare la fine dell’uomo di cui s’innamorerà, un ragazzo la cui sopravvivenza risulta legata a doppio filo al sacrificio d’un coetaneo, un “mago” capace d’ascoltare le voci di forze sovrannaturali ma non di tornare a sentire dall’orecchio resogli sordo dalle percosse del padre, un sognatore che riesce a materializzare nella vita d’ogni giorno ciò che vede mentre dorme… tutte figure al limite, straordinarie nel vero senso del termine, perfette per narrare un racconto che sembra sorgere – anzi, che sorge – proprio dalle loro psicologie turbate, di cui i panorami surreali, le api, le interminabili file d’auto tutte uguali e “gli alberi che parlano in latino” non sono altro che una proiezione tattile.
Esattamente la stessa schiettezza riscontrabile, difatti, nelle descrizioni di paesaggi grotteschi, in certe sequenze d’azione violenta e, più banalmente, nel toto-morti conclusivo, può essere rintracciata nell’asprezza (?) che accomuna molte delle caratteristiche fondanti di ciascun personaggio e nell’insistenza con cui esse vengono sviscerate lungo l’intero corso della storia, mai ridotte a mero accessorio di scena: il fatto che Ronan abbia ritrovato il corpo del padre ucciso non ha l’obiettivo di renderlo più bello&dannato che mai, ma serve a spiegarne complessivamente l’agire, a fornire un solido contesto a numerose sue decisioni… così come il disturbo da stress post-traumatico di cui soffre Gansey, assieme a diverse fissazioni un po’ “da nerd” e ad un attaccamento agli amici così genuino e intenso da oscurare, talvolta, perfino la storia d’amore con Blue, aiuta a fare di questo – pur ricchissimo e carismaticissimo - protagonista quanto di più lontano dall’ennesimo Gary Stu che mi sarei aspettata d’incontrare. Il tutto, peraltro, senza comunque mai peccare di presunzione o perdersi nella ricerca del dramma ad ogni costo, grazie al costante e ben calibrato ricorso ad un humor nero (di cui Noah finisce per essere la vittima principale) tanto esilarante quanto relativamente originale, in ambito YA.
Proprio a quest’ultimo proposito, fra gli elementi che concorrono a tracciare una netta linea di separazione tra The Raven Cycle e titoli 'colleghi' quali, ad esempio, The Mortal Instruments, occorrerà menzionare anche la perfetta coralità dell’opera… che non solo sceglie d’individuare il proprio perno in un personaggio, Ronan, il cui punto di vista subentra soltanto a partire dal secondo volume, ma che presta inoltre la massima attenzione a non imporre al lettore una seconda Clary Fairchild, riservando a Blue ampi spazi ma mai un’ottica (o, peggio ancora, un’etica) privilegiata rispetto a quella dei suoi compagni d’avventura. E se non c’è figura a cui la Stiefvater non sia stata in grado di donare una vivida pennellata di colore, piuttosto che cimentarmi in un appello, preferirei qui spendere qualche parola in più su quella che davvero mi ha rubato il cuore... quell’Adam Parrish che pure, talvolta, viene concepito dagli stessi fans come semplice appendice del più singolare Ronan.
Introdotto nelle vesti di riflessiva e malinconica voce narrante, egli finisce invece, già a partire dalla conclusione del primo libro, per assumere il ruolo di fondamentale - e imprevedibile - chiave di volta per lo sviluppo della trama… mentre gli accenti più pacati e contemplativi della sua personalità, incalzati anche dallo sgretolarsi d’un equilibrio familiare già precario, cedono man mano il posto ad altri ben più spinosi, quali un’ossessiva ambizione maturata nell’arco d’una vita trascorsa all’insegna di soprusi e privazioni, un’indole testarda fino all’irragionevolezza e un’inquietante abilità nel ferire il prossimo, specie nel caso in cui questi abbia un volto amico, come istintiva forma d’autodifesa; presentato, ancora, come terzo elemento del più classico del triangoli ProtagonistaFemminile/ProtagonistaMaschile/BffDelProtagonistaMaschile, si ritroverà, più tardi, ; infine, in un periodo in cui il suggerire come una vittima d’abusi possa rischiare di divenire carnefice a sua volta (o viceversa) viene considerato un peccato capitale, un affronto, un abuso esso stesso, Adam ha… la sfacciataggine? d’essere profondamente impaurito dal mostro che non può fare a meno di rivedere nei propri atteggiamenti, nei propri scatti d’ira, nella crudeltà delle parole rivolte a Gansey e del piano in cui si vergogna di coinvolgere Ronan, nella vanità con la quale si compiace delle attenzioni di quest’ultimo. Un personaggio, in definitiva, di cui è doloroso ascoltare la voce e spesso difficile perdonare i pensieri più velenosi, senza, nel farlo, accettare di scendere ad un compromesso morale – che, tuttavia, permette in cambio d’ammirare un profilo incredibilmente *vivo*, uno dei più realistici di cui abbia letto nel corso degli ultimi anni.

Introdotto nelle vesti di riflessiva e malinconica voce narrante, egli finisce invece, già a partire dalla conclusione del primo libro, per assumere il ruolo di fondamentale - e imprevedibile - chiave di volta per lo sviluppo della trama… mentre gli accenti più pacati e contemplativi della sua personalità, incalzati anche dallo sgretolarsi d’un equilibrio familiare già precario, cedono man mano il posto ad altri ben più spinosi, quali un’ossessiva ambizione maturata nell’arco d’una vita trascorsa all’insegna di soprusi e privazioni, un’indole testarda fino all’irragionevolezza e un’inquietante abilità nel ferire il prossimo, specie nel caso in cui questi abbia un volto amico, come istintiva forma d’autodifesa; presentato, ancora, come terzo elemento del più classico del triangoli ProtagonistaFemminile/ProtagonistaMaschile/BffDelProtagonistaMaschile, si ritroverà, più tardi, ; infine, in un periodo in cui il suggerire come una vittima d’abusi possa rischiare di divenire carnefice a sua volta (o viceversa) viene considerato un peccato capitale, un affronto, un abuso esso stesso, Adam ha… la sfacciataggine? d’essere profondamente impaurito dal mostro che non può fare a meno di rivedere nei propri atteggiamenti, nei propri scatti d’ira, nella crudeltà delle parole rivolte a Gansey e del piano in cui si vergogna di coinvolgere Ronan, nella vanità con la quale si compiace delle attenzioni di quest’ultimo. Un personaggio, in definitiva, di cui è doloroso ascoltare la voce e spesso difficile perdonare i pensieri più velenosi, senza, nel farlo, accettare di scendere ad un compromesso morale – che, tuttavia, permette in cambio d’ammirare un profilo incredibilmente *vivo*, uno dei più realistici di cui abbia letto nel corso degli ultimi anni.

🦅 Reading and love for books changes lives and in George R.R. Martin’s words : “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” I’m dedicating this year’s World Book Day to one of those series that made me fall irrevocably in love with reading - The Raven Cycle.
🦅 For those of you who haven’t read this yet, it is sooo amazing! It’s best that you get into this series without knowing too much. For me the series was all about the amazing characters! These guys are literally Squad Goals 😍. I loved each one of them so much, they’re so precious to me and I honestly wanted to be best friends with them 🙈.
🦅 Maggie Stiefvater has done an amazing job with making you fall in love with this friend group and making you feel like you’re genuinely a part of it! Seeing how much these characters care about each other was so meaningful to me because one of my favourite things in books is strong friendships.
🦅 The writing is also incredible. It’s whimsical and dreamlike and kinda confusing sometimes but in a good and purposeful way. The series is so unique in terms of it’s storyline, characters and the way it’s written. It’s definitely something I could read over and over again!

Unpopular opinion of an absurdly popular book review. Yayyy.
So you know when you wake up in the morning and your brains a little fuzzy but you’re sipping that coffee and trying to come alive. But then your roommate or sister or spouse or whoever you’re living with decides to tell you what they dreamt last night. It always starts “Do you want to hear what I dreamt last night?” But even though the answer is certainly no, in fact you shake your head vehemently and utter the word “NO!” the aforementioned person launches into their dream- because hello it was crazy and they need to share it.
And it makes no sense.
And it’s random AF.
And even though the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, the dream sequence is never linear. It’s curvy and redundant and shifting and sliding and you’re expected to follow. When actually you want to fall into your coffee cup.
That’s the Raven Cycle. Maggie Stiefvader’s creative, impossible to follow, dramatic epic tale of myths and teenagers who are Different. You know- like speshul. Like dripping with angst, facing existential crisis, judgeamental kids with really predictable love lives.

It was a great book. I think it's particularly aimed at people that like books centred around plot development so if you enjoy a good Jungle adventure then these books are for you! I enjoyed the diverse characters and their differences and how they are explored and shown throughout the books, especially the emotional impact and relationship turmoil that was expressed by the significant difference between Gansey and Ronan's comfortable, wealthy childhoods and Adam and Blue's less well-off childhoods. In addition the secondary characters had rather interesting problems that interlinked with the main 4 characters' plot. However in my opinion, at times the pace of the book was quite fluctuant and it did not stick at one pace but in the slow paced moments it was often too slow or could be rather vague, therefore leaving me with lots of questions.
Overall the series had an interesting plot that surprised me at moments and the interlinking of different character's own subplots to create a satisfying resolution was a great way of creating a story that kept you guessing and mostly satisfied!

I loved these books, its all so magical and mysterious and all the characters were so unique and well developed! What I loved the most was the way they interacted though! Those four boys have such a deep friendship it’s almost unbelievable! They care so much for each other, yet they all have their own troubles and worries that constantly seem to get in their way! Each and every single one of them is somehow broken, but together they are whole! Gosh!! I can’t even describe how wonderful they are but suffice it to say that this book is going to turn your world upside down! ;-) Well, that and your emotions! Jeez! This was such a roller coaster my hair is still messy and tangled from the ride! *lol*
I guess to know what I’m talking about you just have to read the book and make this experience for yourself. I’m pretty certain the majority of you won’t regret it and I can almost guarantee that sooner or later you will realise that you’ve grown fond of “The Raven Boys” as well! ;-P They just have a way to sneak into your heart and once you’ve opened up there is no going back! XD
I guess to know what I’m talking about you just have to read the book and make this experience for yourself. I’m pretty certain the majority of you won’t regret it and I can almost guarantee that sooner or later you will realise that you’ve grown fond of “The Raven Boys” as well! ;-P They just have a way to sneak into your heart and once you’ve opened up there is no going back! XD
