Anya’s book raised awareness of the positive influence that horticulture can have on mental health. She proves that gardening does not need expensive equipment or specialist training—anyone can transform their garden and create something truly amazing.
Anya’s book contents are broken down through the months from January through December, and what is planted in her garden and the preparation (sowing seeds, plant propagation, and cutting) at just the right time of the year, and the gardener will reap plentifully or such term.
It’s mid-winter, and the garden is looking forlorn, yet there are flowers to be enjoyed like witch-hazel and plants like amaryllis come into flower at the end of January.
March is the time to start sowing, so buy some seeds and get started; as well as to start cutting from one’s existing plants to bring them indoors and place them in vases or to have as indoor potted plants till springtime.
April is busiest in the garden; working in harmony with nature, Anya prefers to start with planting into a bed or a pot outside instead of starting them in a tray indoors and bringing them outside. This way is more practical; that harmonious feeling of working with nature, and sowing seeds where they will grow, feels exactly like that. Anya says that she thinks of herself as ‘nature’s helper—as she scatters seeds around her garden, and so on it goes...
This book offers everything that an avid gardener wants to know or ask about gardening; it’s all there. Anya says that her garden helps her find the positive when she’s experiencing challenges in her life, and going outside and sowing seeds or pruning her plants helps her stay mindful and keep focus on the beauty that is around her. Simply watching a tulip open its petals when warmed by the sun, and then close them up again as the air cools in the evening, shows that change is a natural process and occurs minute by minute, day by day.

While it is lacking somewhat in the “glossy picture” category, the information on propagation and the chart at the back of the book make up for it.

Really helpful photos and relatable stories. I learned a few things about propagation as well. Helps demystify gardening for someone who’s just starting out or maybe feeling a bit overwhelmed with the costs

Nice pictures and ideas for plant propagation methods, but the book isn’t practical month to month for all gardening zones in the United States.
