First and foremost, the FMC is named Eddie Winslow. As in the same name of of the eldest son of Carl Winslow on the TV show "Family Matters" back in the day. That should have been clue one that this book wasn't going to be my cup of tea.

Look, I'm all for a dystopian fuck the man uprising plot as that's been the majority of the I've read for the better part of this year, but "The Last Embers" was just very lackluster in my opinion. Nothing really good starts to happen until the halfway point and you would think it's because they were trying to do world and character building, but that's not it. It's just random "get to know you, but not the stuff we need to know about you" filler.

Also when the MMC (Angel) gets taken and Eddie learns about the resistance group, she is asked to join them. Why they chose her, someone who offers no real value to their cause, I have no clue. The only thing is her Dad is being jailed for his association to the resistance, but that's him, not her. She proceeds to tell them that she'll join them under one condition and that's if they break Angel out and figure out a way to bring him out of his medically induced coma. Without even batting an eyelash the resistance group agrees and with little to no effort they succeed in freeing him even though he was in a high security facility. Again what's so special about this girl that has them pretty much jeopardizing their entire mission to save some random boy who was a spy in the first place? It just didn't make any logical sense. And mind you she already has found out Angel was a spy sent to gather Intel on her and is the reason her Dad was in trouble, but she's quick to ignore all of that and just "forgive and forget" like nothing every happened.

Something that also bugged me was that every time a conflict or action scene took place it never played out. For example, when Angel and Eddie are trying to escape a group trying to capture them they stowaway in the back of a truck. They think they are in the clear until the truck gets pulled over for a random inspection and they make a comment about having to fight their way out to get back to their group. What happens next? Nothing. Literally nothing. It cuts to them back with their group.

The only upsides to this book were that I got for free from Chirp as part of their Free Friday audiobook offers and that it was a three hour listen so I was able to knock it out pretty quickly.

There are two more in the series, but I'm tapping out after this one. Maybe I shouldn't though. Who knows, perhaps Steve Urkel will show up to join this misfit group to save the day and it will save the series after all?

Decided to not finish this one. I was bored. Also had a hard time remembering that Eddie is a girl and Angel is a boy. Why in the world use a boy name for a girl? It’s confusing especially when the boy has a more feminine name. The book cover doesn’t fit with the genre of this book. It was a dystopian society, and it threw me off.

Spell binding development of a war series. Characters feel real and the events authentic.

The narrator, Jordan Gibbs is great to listen too. Looking forward to books 2 & 3 in the series.
