Wat een heerlijk boek alweer. ik was nog geen drie bladzijden ver, of ik had het pelgrimspad dat deze auteur afstapt, the Old Way, al gezocht en bewaard in mijn Komoot app.
Het zit nl. zo: afgelopen zomer ben ik met twee andere vrouwen een paar dagen gaan stappen op de Via Francigena. Deze vertrekt in Canterbury. Ik vond het stappen in de UK zalig. De vriendelijke mensen, de kleine dorpjes met hun pubs, het mooie golvende landschap, het heeft me bekoord. Toen ik later deze zomer in Northumberland was, zag ik dit boek liggen bij Waterstones. Ik heb het gekocht.
Gail Simmons stapt 4 keer een week op dit pelgrimspad. Een week in elk seizoen.Dit pad begint in Southampton en gaat naar Canterbury, waar Thomas Beckett werd vermoord. Het is dus een pelgrimstocht naar deze heilige.
Als verstokte wandelaar herkende ik de vele gevoelens die ze met haar lezers deelt. Het plezier van alleen te wandelen, het gevoel van de koude wind in je gezicht, haar ontmoetingen onderweg, haar observaties van de wereld rondom haar. Ja, dat was genieten.
Het was ook fijn te lezen dat ook zij haar moeilijke momenten heeft op het pad, dat het soms moeilijk is om door te zetten. Maar ook hoe trots je kan zijn als je het haalt.
Tussendoor krijg je het verhaal van Thomas Becket, hoe hij vermoord werd in de kathedraal.
Ik heb aan zijn herdenkingsplaat gestaan. Zijn graf werd vernietigd door Henry VIII (who else?).
Op het einde, wanneer ze Canterbury nadert, passeert ze aan plaatsen waar wij ook geweest zijn. Heerlijk om die plekken te herkennen.
Ik hoop toch ooit nog eens in de UK te kunnen gaan wandelen.

A good chronology drives the narrative of this work, and the focus on the specific churches keeps a cohesiveness which ties a substantial amount of it together. At times the writing could use a little shaping, as it can be a little repetitive and not make the most sense, so could do with being a little clearer in places. However, it was an enjoyable and interesting read of an otherwise forgotten or minimised element of the history of the south coast

knowing some of the places in the book it was always going to be interesting to see what someone else thought of them.
I was surprised that Simmons was able to find so much to talk about Havant.
Then again the nature of her journey she didn't dwell on any one place too long. although a deep study of some of them would have been really interesting.

Taken by this travel memoir, in part because the area is very close to where we live. Some good background history and landscape detail. The spiritual wanderings paled after a while though. The experience of walking as therapy comes over well though.

Nice way of linking up local history. Makes me want to visit some churches
