Just because you’re chosen, doesn’t mean you want to be.
A city built for peace is on the edge of chaos. A murderer stalks the streets of Babylon, and with each kill, the civil unrest rises. How long will it be until the tipping point is reached and violence erupts in the streets? Is there any hope for the poor citizens of this once-great city? Perhaps. Because true to form, Nicolas Percival Carnegie and his companions are about to walk right through the city gates and into a world of trouble. Tracking the demon Koth and Nicolas’s kidnapped people, the group quickly find themselves deputised by the City Watch to aid in the hunt for this elusive killer. Dodging demons, assassins, and the usual general villainy he somehow gravitates towards—or vice versa—Nicolas must restore order to this beleaguered city before it’s too late. A daunting task for someone who can barely keep his own life in order.
Andrew Claydon has an imagination, one full of variety.
Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's adventurous, sometimes it's shocking, and occasionally it's outright strange...but it's never boring!
Andrew is a UK author who grew up loving fantasy movies such as Conan, Krull, Beastmaster and Willow. The epic worlds and battles of swords and sorcery therein inspired him to create his own fantasy worlds, adding to them his own brand of irreverent humour; because sometimes it's good to chuckle in between sword fights!
He wants to inspire the imagination of others, just as he's been inspired; with dashing heroes, epic quests and vile villains.
So reader beware, you aren't just opening a book, but a doorway into Andrew's imagination. It'll be a strange journey, but an entertaining one!
I received a digital copy of this book from the author for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I have really enjoyed all of the books in this series so far and Demons and Disorder is no exception. The plot itself was very well-written and set up almost like a murder mystery. Nicolas and company need to solve a series of mysterious deaths in the city of Babylon while dealing with trying to find the demon Koth and trying to understand how the Maestro connects to everything. This book does a good job of balancing its more serious moments with plenty of humor and awkward moments throughout the book that often had me laughing out loud.
The characters have all developed so much over the course of this series and all of them feel very real and relatable. I think the most rewarding development has been Nicolas himself. At his core, he's still the awkward polite homebody from the beginning of the series. However, this is now balanced with Nicolas turning into a capable fighter and having more confidence in himself and his abilities, which has been really satisfying to read. The other characters are great, too, and the party's interactions with each other are tons of fun to read. I especially enjoyed reading Nicolas and Shift's awkward "friends" banter with each other.
I highly recommend Demons and Disorder, along with the other books in the Chronicles of the Dawnblade series, to those who love fantasy, adventure, and comedy with fun interesting characters and great plots. This whole series has been an absolute joy to read and I'm already looking forward to the next book..
I just finished reading book number six of the Chronicles of the Dawnblade and this is officially the third longest series I've read in my life. Yes, I'm counting The Belgariad and The Mallorean as one big series and you can't stop me. Most authors wouldn't dare to embark on writing a series, much less succeed in creating one amazing book after the other. I'm yet to find a Nick Carnage adventure that isn't as exciting as the previous one, and from an author's point of view, the only explanation is a pact with some dark entity. How can these books keep getting better?! The cosmopolitan city of Babylon is fertile soil for adventures and danger, especially now that Nick is no longer the most naïve village boy in town. Our hero continues to grow, this time not only in strength and skills but also in clever retorts. Oh, how I dreamed of the day he wouldn't stammer and blush (which he still does, but not so often) whenever Shift teased him. I love the new covers. I'll miss the old ones, where Nicolas stared at us looking like the most reluctant hero in existence, but these new designs show that we're now journeying with a fully fledged hero. Here's to another book!
What an amazing story! This is my favorite so far in the series - packed with so much action, plus twists and turns. Of course it was packed full of my favorite part - hilarious comments between Shift & Nicolas that cracked me up, plus funny stories from Auron.
I absolutley loved the developing relationships amoungst the characters as they all worked together on this quest (particularly Silva & Auron). The end might surprise you - I really enjoyed it and the epilogue which provided great hints of what is to come. All I can tell you is...Yippee! I can't wait til book 7 to see what new adventure awaits Nicolas and crew!
He's survived menacing minotaurs, nefarious necromancers, fiendish fauns and a whole lot more besides.
Nicolas has gone from a life of 0 adventures to quite a few. But has anything he's faced yet prepare him for his next challenge...to hunt down and catch a demonic killer?
Probably not, but he hasn't been very prepared for anything that has come before and he seems to find his way.
Follow along with Nicolas as he travels to the city of Babylon, only to find himself deputised in the search for the murderer who plagues the city.
I try to give each book in the series a slightly different flavour to keep things exciting, and I was really pleased with how Demons and Disorder came out. It's the biggest instalment in the series yet, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!
First things first, I HAVE to comment on this author's magnificent penmanship, he's, without doubt, one of the best there is in creating a visual that engulfs me completely, he's actually a maestro, I'm watching him conducting the most spectacular orchestra and the notes, oh heavens, the notes he pulls out are, well, heavenly! No angels here though, no siree, we have a bumbling genius on our hands! Bumbling? Yes, he gets himself into the most untenable of situations. Genius? Sure, how else does he get OUT of said situations? Or it could be a dose of luck, or his amazing found family.... however one swings it, Nicolas is sheer delectation!
The story begins....an orc, a spirit and a hero walk into a bar.... just kidding 😂 but there IS an orc, there IS a spirit and most definitely, there IS a hero! This is what this series evokes in me, fun and shenanigans, because that is exactly what this book is about! This author's forte is his flair for making his characters next level awesome. So much so that I honestly can't choose a favourite, they are all so quirky and singular, I just love them all. Although, if I HAD to choose, it would probably be a toss between Auron and Garaz. One a spirit, one an orc, who by no means detract from Silva or Shift and Nicolas is a larger than life.... hero! And what's even more hilarious is how Nicolas tries to persuade himself that Shift is "just a friend" when he's clearly smitten! Oh but I DO adore Shift! My word, what a mouth! My word what a snarky, sassy, fun character! Just seeing Nicholas evolve does my heart good. Though he's still naive, gullible, innocent, bemused half the time, he's so darn NICE! Now he's a tougher nice, a fiercer nice, he's definitely fallen into the role assigned to him, unwillingly naturally, but now he defend himself, thanks to Silva and Auron, he can wield a sword, he can feels anger, and more importantly, he can act on any threat... mostly...So from the burn in Nicolas to find the demon responsible for the abduction, or disappearance of his family and villagers is like a festering wound and their journey to locate said demon is perilous, to say the least. He and his friends encounter much along the way, a witch (sorry! A seer!), bandits, false prophets, assassins, you name it, they face it. When they get to Babylon, the excitement revves up. For all of us, Nick and co and me. I find myself groaning out loud for what hits Nicolas time and again, it's as if the entire universe conspires against him, he can't go to a simple rally, he can't go on a simple stroll without some sort of s*it being shovelled on him.
The addition of characters as the plot gets more convoluted and twisty are fabulous, I loved Sargent Tallith and the grumpy Lord Commander but it was his wife who stole the show, for me at any rate, she's coolness personified. As Shift said "a force of nature".The banter and dialogue is effortlessly delivered, honestly, it was delightful, humorous and snappy. The teasing and ploys this unlikely band of misfits dish out, is unanimous with a family strong in affection for one another and their protective loyalty to one another is unsurpassed. As perfect a found family as one could get. A sweet romance to boot! Except, I somehow think I'll giggle each time I utter the word "yippee"😁 What I really love and enjoy is how Andrew Claydon takes every character, infuses them with his special brand of 'je nais se quoi' to turn each of them into full bodies exceptional invidivuals that I hanker after, that I'm pretty much like a glutton devouring all before me. And the best part? I feel completely sated, I feel completely satisfied without an ioto of overindulgence, heck, I'm ready for more!
This is an exceptional read, honest to goodness The way this author imbues the "silly" with the real and the genuine, few can emulate. Few can connive a story so rapturously riveting, with the action, mystery, drama and the underlying tone of acceptance. Accepting those that are different, putting bias aside for don't all deserve a place? Shouldn't all should be embraced? I say yes....as I do to this book, my favourite of the series. That action, those bombshells at the end, well heck, gobsmacked is what I was! As usual with this esteemed author, there's an epilogue that whets my palette for more...
The team is once again on the hunt for the demon that has altered Nicolas’ life and home. Auron suggests visiting someone who may be willing to help point them in the right direction instead of blindly guessing. However, that someone has put up a very big “Go Away Auron” sign and traps on her front door. After much arguing and a few revelations they are directed to Babylon where a large demonic presence is detected, the giant city of peace where all species are supposed to live and work together. The only drawback is how long it will take to get there. Life cannot be simple for Nicolas since the universe loves to shove him out of his comfort zone. While getting closer to their destination they stop at a village which happens to be hosting a very unique rally. And he so happens to stop an assassination attempt but gets left with the evidence literally at his feet. Now he is blamed for the attempt as they have to escape the village while Shift makes vague threats for them losing the use of a real bed. Once they finally reach Babylon the tension of the residents is palpable and the group finds themselves voluntold to help find a killer before the city implodes on its fear and anger. Nicolas knows it's related to the demonic activity they were directed to but is once again torn between doing what is right and completing his personal mission.
There are things I want to gush about so much from this book that would be spoilers. The comedic and embarrassing things that happen to Nicolas continue and he has even learned to embrace that it is going to happen. I enjoy that Nicolas remains positive and morally good in the face of how much life sucks sometimes. He did learn to talk to others instead of bottling things in and having one particular group member reel them in when they start to spiral was a good show of growth among the group. Something is definitely wrong with Garaz, I feel whatever is troubling him has not been resolved and hope to see more of that resolution soon. One of the climactic scenes I enjoyed from previous books and will continue to enjoy seeing is when Auron and Nicolas work together. It is like both holders of the Dawnblade are working as one and it is just a magnificent scene. One thing happened that I think all of us readers went “FINALLY” and I can never hear the word ‘yippee’ the same, like ever again. This was a great addition to the series and I hope that this series continues to be funny in the face of seriousness.
I think what shines out foremost for me is finding a character who is not looking for glory for himself but who just feels a compulsion to do the right thing for others. He doesn’t think he is the all-powerful greatest thing around. He is well aware of the risk he is taking. But he does it for the good of others who matter to him, even if they are strangers. That, for me, defines a hero.
In this book, the once glorious city of Babylon, known for cultivating peace and understanding among the population blend of many races, is now plagued by a murderer whose repeated killings stir up the community’s fear to a boiling point. And that fear will ultimately explode into uncontrolled violence and destruction. Oddly enough, at the point he is needed most, Nicolas Percival Carnegie and his friends step right into the middle of things. He doesn’t ask for trouble, he doesn’t want it, but he won’t avoid it if he can make things better.
In his quest for the demon Koth, Nicholas has arrived in Babylon to seek information from Auron’s spirit. Auron loves to embellish his stories, so it is not easy to get a straight answer. When he finally got around to telling Nicholas the place where he should go to find the witch who could help track down the demon, he suddenly felt compelled to add, with a sense of urgency, that the witch was “very temperamental” and all possibilities MUST be considered before they go in. (This is a shining example of the author’s skill in bringing his characters alive to the reader and in memorable ways as we read the turmoil among Nicholas’ group in response.) About to move on, because Auron was still stalling and trying to drag out this entire conversation, Nicholas sees something moving that should not be doing so. Statues with leering demonic faces stared directly at him! But no, statues cannot move… until he stepped forward and they did!
Then when the governor pulls Nicholas and his group into the city’s troubles by deputizing them to help find the killer terrorizing the city, there are even more evils to battle. Will Nicholas and the others be able to help the city while pursuing their own problems? Or perhaps everything is somehow related? And regardless, our hero Nicholas would never walk away from anyone who needs help, would he? Or is this more than even Nicholas can deal with? Join the adventure, and remember... it won’t stop here!
Oh goodness, did this book make me feel so many feelings! I love that Nicholas is embracing who he was chosen to be and leaning into the teachings of those around him. Our party of adventures are heading to Babylon, the city of peace, to hopefully find the demon they are hunting. However, the city of peace is on the brink of civil unrest as more hatred has spread here, and it's the humans against those they are seeing as non-human. The author does an amazing job putting you into the heart of the city in this hate mongering time and it being on the verge of exploding in violence. I felt the anxiety of Nicholas and his companions as they race to stay ahead of the violence but also try to find answers. The author did such a wonderful job wrapping me in this world, I was gobsmacked by that ending, and now I need more information because I am offended on Nick Carnage's behalf.
‘From the moment I left my village, I’ve been coming across these terrible people doing awful things for stupid reasons. A lot of people get hurt, and I can’t just live my life knowing it happens. Especially not since my parents were killed. So if fate’s going to shove me in front of these people, I’d best be ready for them. I’d rather stand up to them than let them hurt people because I didn’t have the skill, or the balls, to stop them.’
I love a new Andrew Claydon book and was thrilled to read an advance copy of his latest adventure with Nicholas, Auron, Shift, Silva and Garez, or 'the crew' (as I now like to think of them). Yippee....! As usual, Nicholas is wonderfully reluctant, although his character arc through the series has developed significantly and it's lovely to see him more willing to tackle the (many) challenges which are thrown his way in the course of his quest. The bond between the characters continues to grow, and, as it does with old friends, grate sometimes. They are all so relatable - we all have that one friend who has a tale to tell, or the strong silent one who's there for guidance when it's needed. I tend to save this author's books for when I need a quick pick me up laugh or feel a bit lonely because I have come to consider the 'crew' as my friends. I love the banter between them and the feeling like I'm being carried along on their perilous adventures, through the twists and turns - it gives me immense satisfaction to get to the end and discover we're all still alive, and quipping. I think, as the series expands, the stories only get better! Another fantastic instalment - highly recommend!
Andrew Claydon has done it again with another outstanding novel in this series. I was completely engrossed from the first page to the last. This is one of those books you just can't set aside - I was hooked, constantly wanting to see what would happen next.
What I really admire about this series is how every book has its own distinct personality and tone, ensuring the story never feels repetitive. Its consistently thrilling, with clever twists that keep you guessing.
In this book, Nicolas's journey felt especially poignant. His determination to help others - sometimes even those who don't deserve it - ends up dragging him into even more trouble. I couldn't help but feel for him as he struggled to do the right thing in impossible situations.
I also loved the addition of a budding love interest. It's a delightful touch, and I'm excited to see how this aspect of the story evolves - it's been a long time coming!
And that ending - wow. It's left me on the edge of my seat, eager to dive into the next chapter of this incredible series. I can't wait for the next book to arrive!
Our reluctant hero is back but this time is not so reluctant as he is embracing what he is becoming and his role to play. A hero who’s not looking for power or glory but just to do the right thing and this time he is hunting for the demon Koth. This quest takes Nicholas and his friends to the once glorious city of Babylon only to find it under the shadow of a serial murderer so now not only are they hunting for a demon but find themselves drawn into the hunt for a killer. The world building continues to be amazing and so descriptive that you can easily visualise everything and you find yourself drawn back into this incredible world with it’s fabulous characters who continue to grow and who you would want by your side. An incredible read, brimming with adventure, action, banter, intrigue and twists and turns that will hook you and have you on the edge of your seat and an incredible addition to this wonderful series.
When there are demons involved, can one really say joy? With this book I can! It's the 6th in the series and while it's labelled as humorous fantasy, there's a lot more to it as well. Acceptance of oneself and others, choosing your moments to make a difference, and so much more.
Following Nicolas in his humorous, embarrassing, and not-so-humorous moments in a joy. There are fun moments, there are moments I stopped and said, awwww, and points where I said 'finally! It's about time."
Author Claydon has done a fabulous job making not just the MC, but the other characters full people in their own right.
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Demons and Disorder by Andrew Claydon Author and it is a goodie! First, the author is back in my good books (you know what you did! 😂 and thank you for the afterword) and second, this might be his best yet. Nicholas is back looking for a demon in a town that's meant to be a symbol for peace in the world... but things are never easy and a spate of murd3rs is breaking the fragile peace between species. His love life might be getting better and he might be growing into a hero, but our Nicholas is a wanted man and that's just the start of his problems. A fab, fun read with a great twist ending!
Demons and Disorder (book 6 of The Chronicles of the Dawn Blade) 439 pages
I received a digital copy of this book from the author for free and I am completing a voluntary review here. The story line, the characters, the tangled Comedy/Tragedy, and Nick Carnage’s (Whoops! Nicholas Perceval Carnegie. Sorry Nick!) continued development into the Hero he needs to become, just keeps getting better and better!
Our favourite team of mismatched heroes is once again (somewhat reluctantly) off on their adventures. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading as each character develops, and their relationships grow stronger. As always the author manages to create a wonderfully whimsical fantasy world that still stays so relatable to our real world issues. Written in the authors signature style combining wit, humour and real in-depth emotion this book will have you up until 3am reading “just one more chapter”. Nicolas Percival Carnegie truly deserves his place as one of the all time great adventurers!
