A frozen corpse leads a detective to a deadly family in this psychological thriller by the author of Mostly Murder.
BAD OMEN
Homicide detective Claire Morgan has a bad feeling when a man’s body is found in a Missouri State Park. The crime scene is buried in snow. The corpse is frozen in ice. And nearly every bone has been broken, shattered, or crushed . . .
BAD BLOOD
Claire’s suspicions only get worse when the body is thawed and identified. The victim was an ultimate fighter on the cage-match circuit. His wife blames her ex-husband, a Russian mafioso. But Claire knows this is no mob-style execution. This is something worse. Something evil . . .
BAD BONES
Raised from childhood to inflict pain, the killer uses rage as a weapon. Punishing without mercy. Killing without conscience. Upholding a dark family tradition that is so twisted, so powerful, it destroys everything in its path. And Claire is about to meet the family . . .

The violence factor in this book was a little high for me but I persevered. As with all the other Claire Morgan books, the two storylines converge at the end to reach a finale. The book begins with a frozen body that is found in a Missouri State park. Nearly all of his bones have been broken. This leads us to the world of unsanctioned cage fighting and the brutality that comes with it, starting with a father who trains his sons as young as five to fight or face punishment. Claire and Bud must deal with two feuding families a la Hatfield's & McCoy's as well as undercover ATF and FBI agents, while trying to determine what is the truth and who to trust. Despite warnings to the contrary, Claire plows ahead with no regard to personal safety and ends up in the killer's clutches. This time may be too much for Nick to endure. Lot's of twists and turns, including a nice twist on the multiple personality disorder. We are also introduced to a new character, Laurie Dale, who is an FBI agent who would be a nice addition for Claire's circle of friends. I didn't know for sure until the end if there was one killer or two. Ladd is a master at the dark, psychological thriller.
The yuck factor is very prevalent in this book - and I loved it. There are 2 stories that merge into one, a familiar trend for Linda Ladd (and I love her writing for it). Cage fighting and all that encompasses - starting boys at the age of 5 to beat each other to a pulp or worse and if they don't comply you lock them up with the dogs that are either being trained to hunt or fight - simply barbaric!
Claire is back in fine sarcastic form that just drips off the page whether it's in her thoughts or speech. And of course she is careful at first, but then her perseverence surfaces and she does become a bit careless and eventually pays for it.
A great read - have waited a while for this book to be published and it was well worth the wait - 2 thumbs up and a solid 4 stars - would love to give 5, but even I have a gross out level (you will have to read the book to find out what that is) :) Do I recommend this book - your durn tootin', especially to the Linda Ladd followers!
I continue to love this series. Book does not disappoint. I had a hard time reading some the past in the beginning, but it was necessary for the story. 4 stars
Bad Bones by Linda Ladd is a dark psychological suspense thriller. It is filled with twists and turns and it is action packed from beginning to end.
Claire Morgan is a homicide detective for Canton County. She and her partner, Bud Davis, are investigating the murder of a an ultimate fighter, whose body is found buried under snow in a state park. The victim’s body has nearly every bone broken, perhaps from a beating with a bat. Because the victim is an ultimate fighter, he could have been beaten by an opponent. Whoever killed him, that person is one sick human.
The victim’s wife feels that her husband was murdered by her ex-husband, who happens to be an ex-mafia member. So not only does Claire have to figure out the killer during blizzard, freezing conditions, she has to pay a visit to the mafia, which she figures may be dangerous. She has also heard rumors of fighting groups in the hills who are training young children to become warriors with their fists. This information sickens her and she makes a promise to herself to get to the bottom of the rumors so she can save any young children who are being abused. While dealing with all of this, she is also trying to plan her life with her millionaire boyfriend, who happens to be a top-rate psychiatrist. She is engaged and she has a wedding to plan, which is an overwhelming process to her. Claire definitely has her hands full, trying to juggle all the different aspects in her life.
This book is very suspenseful and action packed. It may not be a book for people who are squeamish, in my opinion. There are sections in the book that deal with children being forced to participate in fighting other children and I thought it was rather graphic and troubling. It explained parts of the book that happen later so it was not put in there just for shock value, which I appreciated. But in my opinion, it was still troubling to read about.
The writing style is very descriptive and the author knows how to write suspense. There were times while reading the book I was afraid to turn the page because I was afraid what I would read. I was on the edge of my seat much of the time while reading the book. This is a great thing, in my opinion. The action is non-stop from beginning to end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful, action book. I have read other books by Linda Ladd and I have enjoyed all of them. This one was no exception.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Amazing, totally amazing!!! I have read every book in this series and was extremely excited to get my hands on an early copy of this latest addition since it is one of my favorite series. I started reading immediately, and then I couldn't put it down. The Claire Morgan books are always a little gritty and disturbing, but this one was even more so in my opinion. It seems like the books just get better and deeper as the series continues to develop.
In Bad Bones, Claire and Bud are searching for a killer who likes to break every bone in his victims' bodies before dumping them in the snow. Their investigation leads them to a modern day group of feuding fighting mountain families who really don't take to outsiders or the law. To make matters worse, one of the victims has ties to a notorious mob family Claire's fiance, Black, knows well. Despite dire warnings from Black and Joe McKay, Claire plows ahead in her usual fashion. Thankfully, Claire is not one of those stupid heroines who ignores all danger and is surprised when bad things happen. She keeps herself aware and prepared but refuses to neglect her job even if it risks her safety at times.
There are a few amusing moments related to Claire's inability to control her snarky mouth, but mostly this was a very suspensefully dark story. There were so many twists and turns and questions I couldn't answer. Claire's relationship with Black had a few ups and downs, but he remains her steady anchor in the middle of all the chaos. I totally love Black!
I didn't know until the very end whether there was one killer or two. The questions were killing me. Some parts of the killer's history were really hard to read, and the final climax of the book had me literally cringing, wanting to read but afraid of what I was going to encounter. To me, that is the best kind of suspense. I absolutely loved it!!!
Thank you, Net Galley, for providing a copy of this book for review!
You can always, and I do mean always, count on several things from Linda Ladd: a very well written story, intrigue, twists & turns galore, being hooked within the first paragraph, and an edge-of-your-seat-can’t-possibly-put-this-book-down read. Oh, and an urge to sleep with all the lights on and a tendency to triple check the locks.
While Bad Bones offers all of these, it’s not one of my faves in the Claire Morgan series. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it offers it all, but I just didn’t connect to this story as quickly as I have to previous ones. There are some old characters that resurface. Ones that you thought Claire was completely rid of. Even Claire didn’t see this one coming.
The ever-present tension between Claire and Black is in full force. She can’t give up her job, doesn’t want to; he can’t stand to see her in danger. Lord knows danger follows her no matter where she goes, what she does, or how simple the case she just landed ought to be. This time, it may have reached its tipping point. It will be interesting to see what happens in their relationship and whether Claire has had enough. Black certainly has.
As always, I can’t jump right into the next book in this series. Linda Ladd always leaves me wrung out while wanting more. Oh, I’ll definitely be reading the next one in this series; I just need a few “feel good, brain candy” books in between.
I was really keen to read this book but as soon as it mentioned a young boy being sent to town to steal poodles for his dads baited dog fights against Pitt Bull dogs and Rottweilers I was done (and it's early on). I'm also not enthralled by the storyline of very young kids being forced to fist fight for adult entertainment, essentially child abuse by proxy.
I couldn't even get into this book once I realised some of the themes. You may feel the same or it won't bother you. I'm a tough skinned reader of graphic crime and even intelligent horror but animal cruelty and gratuitous violence? No thanks. I'm not giving it a rating as only lasted 10% of the book.
I received a copy of this book thanks to the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'll be honest, I'm only here for the evil, twisted psychos. This guy started out pretty sick, but not as bad as he could be. The twin was the sicko. Then things just got weird with him, so I didn't like him (not that I was supposed to like him, but he was just a mediocre character).
My usual complaint with this series is that the editor needs fired! Oh, and there were some blunders that should have been caught by any halfway decent beta reader. Of course, if the author had done a better job in the first place, there wouldn't be an issue.
If I hadn't bought the series in advance, I would have given up on it by now. This book didn't redeem the series for me. I did like Claire. I'm still not liking Black as a point of view character, but I like him. And I also like them together. This carried the book for me. Plot was a little dry in this one, too. Hell, why am I giving it 3 stars? I guess the characters are just that likable.
I found this to be a dark thriller that becomes that way after the story's beginning. Bones are found at a state park in Missouri and you come to find out that the person was part of an illegal cage fighting. Clare is working with Bud at solving all of the pieces but you start having the FBI AND THE ATF also involved and the story becomes more of a mystery but there are still dark moments as you go through this book. Clare ends up in the killer sights and with the different twists that this book leads you on you still don’t know everything until the very end—a good read.
Written well as always but I had difficulty reading it because of the story of the young life story of the bad guy. Looking forward to the next one in the series.
Having read all of the books in the Claire Morgan series to date, I find Bad Bones (Claire Morgan) by Linda Ladd, fits perfectly in the series. The author uses a formula where she tells two parallel stories, one from the antagonist view and the other from Claire’s view. The stories dance and weave around each, generally pointing to one or more potential antagonists from the pallet of characters in the story Although I think each book could be read as a standalone, I find the overall plot. is told and expanded in each of the successive book, and reading them in order adds to the reading experience and the enjoyment of the series.
Bad Bones, follows Mostly Murder (Claire Morgan #6), where we had been in Louisiana, I really enjoyed this book as it brought new characters into the story and expanded on the Louisiana ties that Clair and Black had. Bad Bones returns to Missouri , and with the exception of the antagonist’s story, we really are introduced to any new characters on Claire’s side of the story, Bud’s potential love Briana makes a very brief appearance, allowing the reader to think that more may be in store for them in future books. I missed having more interaction between Claire and Black in this story, but what we did have was filled with wedding plan tension, love, and Black’s amazing patience with Claire, her job and her injuries. This book has a bit less of Black’s flash and glam wealth, which does become a topic between our couple.
The antagonist in this story Punk/Bones, comes from a rural redneck family, that has a old family rivalry with a neighboring family. This side of the story is quit complex, involving the two families (Parker and Fitch), the MMA fight scene, the Chicago mob, a FBI/ATF investigation and flashbacks to Thomas Landers. There is no shortage of action on this side of the story, and although evil, sadistic, and crazy, our antagonist in this story, doesn't come close to the antagonists in the first two books (Head to Head & Dark Places) in my opinion.
In an effort to not spoil the story for readers, I am not going to go into detail on the actual story line/plot of this book, I find with this series the guessing and eventual discovery of the antagonist is the fun of he read.
If you are a reader, follower of the series, this book adds to the continuing story of Claire and Black’s romance, updates info on McKay and his daughter, and sheds some light on Booker as more than just Black’s investigator.
One of the things I didn't like about the story was Claire’s continued personal body damage, it would be nice to have a story where Claire can work her magic, and not end up so injured, but then I have come to view this as part of the Claire Morgan plot line.
The copy of Bad Bones was provided by NetGalley on behalf of Kensington Books, eKensington and has an expected publication date of Sept. 29th, 2014. All in all I enjoyed the book, but for me it was a three star read

. A dark thriller that will chill you to the bone. The most disturbing factor is the use of children fighting children and the fact that this is possible. What a sick mind. An adult at least is hopefully doing it of his own volition. Add in a murder that could be mob related. A psychopath that loves to torment his victims just to watch their pain. Let's just say this is not for Jessica Fletcher fans, but if you enjoy the more spine tingling mysteries of James Patterson's Alex Cross or John Sanford's Lucas Davenport then you will love Linda Ladd's Claire Morgan Series.
In Bad Bone the upcoming nuptials between Claire and her psychiatrist to the stars fiancé Nick Black are overwhelming Claire. I think they might be better off heading to a Vegas Chapel and forgetting a formal wedding. The characters are as always are well developed and unforgettable. The story is riveting for the reader. Told in flashback in parts the reader dares not to stray away from the story. So get comfortable, tell the family there are leftovers in the fridge and be prepared to be drawn into the world of Claire Morgan as she searches for a killer.
Detective Claire Morgan has another homicide to investigate, the brutal murder of a cage fighter; Paulie Parker. With the help of his partner Bud and his favourite shrink/fiancée Nicholas Black she will have to dig for the truth in the cage fighters world full of violence and ruled by some really crazy mobs. Claire will have to deal with gangsters, two crazy families, some wedding troubles and a lot of snow... Will she be able to end her major case without losing her health on it? This book reminds me of the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, with their families rivalry and their love being not enough to keep them together. But to say the truth, I think Paulie Parker and Blythe Fitch families are crazier than the Montague and Capulet; with their child abuse, dog fights, dealing with the Mexican cartel... and a long list full of horrible things. Claire was expecting an easy case but the low temperatures and the snow storms won't help her to resolve this case... although she will have some unexpected help. This book is like entering in a cave; you don't know what to expect inside or even if you are alone... and if there is someone inside... will it help you or try to kill you? Ready to start the journey?
I'm torn with this book, it's a dark suspense that hooks you right right off the bat with the creepy but so perfect description of Punk and Bones but also freaks you out and turns your stomach at what these characters go through. I thought the writing style was amazing and the descriptions outstanding, it was just really hard to read in the fact that it hit you hard in the heart for so many reasons. The kids I hurt for, the father and his drunken friends I wanted to hurt badly or worse, it killed me slowly when reading to see the things that happened in this story, I had nightmares of the dogs ( I'm a total dog lover) and would have loved to never read that but again the writer created a suspenseful story with hatred, hurt, mental illness and all other things in between. Bones is one sick freaking guy...Love Claire, this detective is tough as nails, sweet and good at her job. Love Black too, they are so freakin hot together, Joe is awesome too. If your looking for a wow story with horrible murders and demented minds read this story, the writing is amazing and the twists an turns are creatively plotted and written as well. wow. I don't know how to rate this, this book disturbed me but the story itself was well done. 4 stars
Bad Bones is another great thriller by Linda Ladd. Her Claire Morgan series is one of my top favorites, and this book lived up to all of my expectations. As always, I loved being back in the world of Claire and Nicholas Black. I love the added dimension their relationship gives to the series.
This book was suspenseful and kept me guessing. It combines a vicious killer, cage fighting, feuds, and some really creepy families who live by their own laws out in the back of beyond. Claire has to wade through all of this in order to bring the killer to justice while staying alive. The story was fast-paced and full of action. It was a winner for me!
Claire Morgan, homicide detective is sent out to a death scene in the middle of a winter storm. When it is determined the death is a homicide and the body is identified things get complicated. The victim is an ultimate cage fighter. His wife blames her ex-husband, a very powerful, extremely dangerous crime boss. But the death doesn't fit a mob hit. When she starts investigating the fighters family she finds some very twisted people. A very compelling suspense that keeps you wanting to turn the page to find out what happens next!
Once again, Claire Morgan is investigating some brutal, and I do mean brutal crimes. There is some homicide, romance, even a kind of Hatfield\McCoy feud going on in this thriller. I recommend this series if you like crime sleuthing.
Loved it! Sensational read, and I can't wait to read more in this series. I picked up this book in the middle of a series and I had no problems connecting with the characters. Loved it so much I have already went back and picked up the first four. Reminds me of J.D. Robb series. Five stars.
Its been a while since I read a Claire Morgan book, and this did not disappoint! i t wasn't my favorite out of all the ones I've read so far, but still kept me on the edge of my seat!
