泣く大人 [Naku otona]

女性に圧倒的な人気を誇る作家、江國香織のエッセイ集。初の男性誌連載だった「男友達の部屋」をはじめとする、最近10年間の著者いわく「『泣く大人』の記録」である。
全4章のうち「雨が世界を冷やす夜」「男友達の部屋」「ほしいもののこと」では、日々の生活のなかで、家族、友人を巻き込みながら起こるできごとを、簡潔で、潔ささえ感じる文章で書いている。ときに読者をも共感の渦の中に引き込んでしまう、そんな現実感もにおわせながら。

最後の章「日ざしの匂いの、仄暗い場所」では、著者の本にまつわる思いを、日記、レビューの形で記している。それぞれのレビューも単なる書評ではなく心に響くエッセイとなっているのは、さすがである。

約10年間という、時の流れの中での環境の変化というのは、刻一刻と姿を変える日々の生活の積み重ねであることを感じさせる。著者も、それを改めて見つめ直すことで自分自身が「泣く大人」になったことを確認している。

著者は「子供は泣かない生き物である」という視点を持ち、その視点が「泣く大人」を生みだす。「泣く大人」は実際に涙を流せる人であり「心から安心してしまえる場所」を持てた人であるという。そして本書には、そうなれたことのうれしさが、ちりばめられている。ストレスなどで、とかく無理をしがちな大人たちに「泣いてもいいんだよ」とエールを送ってくれる、いつでも手の届く所に置いておきたい本である。（望月樹子）

A collection of short essays, mostly 2-4 pages long. Honestly, it felt like a chore. That's probably not because of the text itself, just the fact that I don't like short stories. Especially in a foreign language. It takes me a while to get into a story and get to cruising (reading) speed. Reading short texts is like having to crank up an old motor endlessly.

Anyway, it's around 55 texts split into four themes. My favorites were the ones about her male friends (男友達の部屋), there were some interesting ideas about other-sex friendships. The last few ones I didn't read, as they are a 'journal' of novels she read, mostly translations. There are also a few in there that I didn't really understand and didn't seem interesting enough to keep cranking it ;P

Well, in retrospective I shouldn't be surprised: essays and short stories are both not really my thing, so even the best writing skills couldn't save me on a collection of short essays!
