René Goscinny (1926 - 1977) was a French author, editor and humorist, who is best known for the comic book Asterix, which he created with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his work on the comic series Lucky Luke with Morris (considered the series' golden age).
An Anthology stories, as well as a return to form for the series. Dating back to the original run by Rene Goscinny, the short but entertaining stories add a much needed spice to the collection.
It boasts a variety of tales, from when our main cast were kids, from when our Dynamic duo were born, to when the animals of the world take on the allegorical mantle of the factions. This and much more, meta jokes, satire, puns, all in full glory.
Something which would've been better suited as a newspaper/ comic strip, but is nonetheless worth the read.
The collected Asterix short stories! These are as varied as they are fabulous! We see: a story about how the animals of the village also hold out against Roman Imperialism; a story about Gaulish fashion; the birth of our heroes; Asterix in the styles of several other comix; the Obelix family tree; how Lutetia won a competition to host the Olympics; how Spring defeated Winter with the help of the village of Indomitable Gauls; a lot of Roman-bashing; and numourous other adventures! Absolutely top-notch work from Goscinny and Uderzo, spanning 40+ years of Asterix comics history.
This is one for the fans of the Asterix series, a delightful special collection of 14 Asterix 'short stories' (generally 2-4 page comic strips) from throughout the history of the character.
If you're a fan of Asterix there is a lot to love here, as we see fun little dalliances Goscinny and Uderzo took over the decades they were writing and drawing Asterix and his cohorts. There are short strips to time with Paris applying to host the 1992 Olympic Games, spring-themed comic strips, strips about the animals in the Gaulish village, to respond to political points and reader fan mail and questions. There's even a strip where Asterix and Obelix are drawn in the style of other famous cartoons, including the likes of Peanuts and Flash Gordon.
Even though it isn't a long-form story such as what English-speaking readers know of the characters and authors, ASTERIX AND THE CLASS ACT is a lovely addition to the indomitable Gauls oeuvre.
Asterix and the Class Act is a grab bag of about a dozen short stories, published in various places over the last few decades, collected here together for the first time. I'm familiar with the Dogmatix storyline, as it was published as a stand alone book we bought my dad when I was young.
There's also the title, taken from when Obelix can't answer a simple question, and gets put back in class by Getafix.
Some OK stuff, but no really engaging story that grabs you, more of a curio and one time browse through.
A charming collection of short stories—holiday misadventures, childhood flashbacks, ancient sports days. It’s light, nostalgic, and serves as a warm embrace for fans who’ve walked with these characters since childhood.
I read this one night while looking through old school essays. Every short story felt like a homecoming. Especially the one where Asterix and Obelix recall their first wild boar hunt—it felt like flipping through a dusty photo album of a youth never wasted. I smiled the whole time.
An intriguing collection of short stories, although I can't help but feel at least one slightly longer one would've made this set even better. Of most interest was the Parisian (nee Lutetian) bid for the Olympics in '92, the versions of the characters drawn in the style of other comics and seeing how Uderzo's artwork has changed over the years from the gritty, detail heavy stuff early on to a much lighter and simpler style later in life. Very interesting but only really for the fans.
14 short stories ranging from the birth of Asterix and Obelix, who were born on the same day in 35 BC, a poster and cartoon to support Paris' bid for the 1992 Olympics, Chanticleerix (the rooster), kissing under the mistletoe, anthological pieces of different graphic styles of the strip as suggested by fans, Dogamatix the Mascot, and the authors' encounter of a descendant of Obelix. I thoroughly enjoyed reading of and revisiting Asterix, Obelix, Druid Getafix, Chief Vitalstatistix and his wife, Impedimenta, Cacofonix, Unhygienix (the fishmonger), Fulliautomatix (the blacksmith), Mr. And Mrs. Geriatrix, Panacea, and all the other lovable Gauls. Thanks to the talent of Goscinny and Uderzo for resurrecting my childhood memories of this great series. Veni, Vidi, Vici.
Entretenido.
Asterix and the Class Act is the 32nd volume of the Asterix comic strip series that was written and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. It was published in 2003 and it’s a very amusing compilation of stories.
This isn’t your standard Asterix comic. In fact, it’s not a full story, but a collection of short stories that were previously published in a magazine and forgotten until this volume came out. Overall, this experiment was mostly a success. It’s uneven as expected, but the majority of these stories were a delight.
The introduction by Vitalstatistix was repeated from ‘Asterix and the Big Fight’, so it was just filler. The titular story was quite funny as Obelix got to go to school with the kids. The story about the birth of Asterix and Obelix was also quite amusing, though more could have been done with this premise. Obelix failing to kiss Panacea made for one very endearing and fun story. The wintery landscape there was gorgeous.
Chanticleerix is the only story here that was created just for this volume with Uderzo at the helm. It is an example of his clear affinity for animal-centric gags. It’s rather solid and reasonably diverting, but Dogmatix speaking and Obelix understanding him was not a good idea at all. A fashion show and the discussion about hosting the Olympics made for two forgettable stories that were not all that interesting. The spring story was too fantastical, but the kidnapping of Dogmatix story was quite fun and charming.
Let’s talk about some of the best stories in this volume. Asterix As You Have Never Seen Him Before… is an utter delight. This section was dedicated to fans and their crazy ideas that were here put to paper. Those include sci-fi Asterix, a black and white as well as a psychedelic take on the series.
Another highlight is the Latinamania story about the bastardization of French language. It was insightful and quite funny. I also loved the final two stories starring the authors. One is about them brainstorming ideas while the other is about them bumping upon Obelix’s descendant. That one was so charming. Most of these stories ultimately worked, though obviously a sense of momentum and a strong connective tissue were absent here. But the introductory pages were fittingly contextual and informational. The illustrations were also incredible and with frequently colorful, gorgeous color palette.
Asterix and the Class Act is a wonderful compilation of short stories, the majority written by Goscinny himself before his untimely death. It’s an uneven, but gorgeously illustrated, endearing and wonderful time capsule for the series.
Suurin osa tarinoista on pikkuhauskoja vitsejä, muutamaan on laadittu jopa yksinkertainen seikkailujuoni.
Full disclosure, I grew up on this series so my opinion is necessarily biased.
I'm of the view that there is no such thing as a bad Asterix book ... but some volumes, like this one, is pretty good ... but squarely aimed at fans. This is an eclectic collection of short pieces that the authors had created over the years.
As a child I was fortunate enough to read through a teacher's copy of the 1993 edition of Astérix et la Réntrée gauloise. I only read it once and I was quite young but I specifically remembered the story about Spring and the story about Obelix's descendants. I then spent the rest of my childhood assuming I had imagined the whole thing. I can't tell you how delighted I was when a new edition of this collection was reissued in 2003 and I was able to own a copy for myself.
A very special volume of 14 short stories that were unpublished in English for a long time. Between each story is the story of how each tale came about and what magazine or company it was made for. Most stories were 4-6 pages at the longest. There's even one where Uderzo illustrated them in several different comic styles from Peanuts to a retro superhero style.
I liked them all but the one about Chanticleerix the rooster was so cute and I loved the mistletoe one because I love Panacea and Obelix.
