Rate this book
As a viscount’s heir, Rafe Wolfford is obligated to take a wife someday. But she must be the right sort of wife—not too independent, and not inclined to delve into his escapades as a spy. The forthright, perceptive Lady Verity is altogether the wrong choice. But Rafe’s courtship is merely a ruse to discover whether Verity or anyone else associated with Elegant Occasions is leaking crucial information to the French. That mission is all that matters—until fate, and desire, intervene.

After enduring one disastrous engagement, Verity won’t easily open her heart again, preferring to devote herself to Elegant Occasions. Rafe is charming, handsome, and kisses like the very devil, but she knows he’s harboring secrets. Still, when her ex-fiancé tries to ruin her reputation, Rafe offers his hand. For the sake of her family and business, Verity has little choice but to accept. Yet turning this arrangement into a true marriage will require daring and trust—which neither will embrace easily, making surrender all the sweeter . . .

Happy launch day!

This was light fare as usual, but the story was a bit convoluted with multiple villains and family secrets and this hero was a pretty terrible spy. She had him pegged in chapter two and then he kept revealing himself and making dumb decisions. If this had been a spy comedy and Jeffries had leaned into the humour, this may have worked. It did have funny moments, some sweet moments and a fast pace, but the smut was awkward (not in a good way) with the curious virgin trope that Jeffries relies on for every single book, but the template didn’t work well for me this time.

✨HIS NAME IS RAFE✨

Need I say more?? I’ve enjoyed the past two books in this series so much, and thankfully book three was no exception!! I’ve been anticipating this book since I read A Duke for Diana, and it’s such a good feeling getting to the bottom of that Jack in the Green. I just love knowing that this big man was traipsing around as a little bush 😩

I think Verity and Rafe were a good couple together. Sure he was lying about just about everything…but he was endearing and God save the Queen and all that jazz. He was an earnest liar, let’s put it that way. And I’m sorry, but I’ve got no choice but to support (his name was Rafe!!!).

I had a fun time with the mystery of it all, and I’ll admit I was a bit thrown by the villain! I also think I have a feeling where the next book is going to go and let me tell you I am INTRIGUED. Compelled! Sabrina Jeffries absolutely knows how to get me coming back for more.

Accidentally His by Sabrina Jeffries
Designing Debutantes series #3. Historical regency romance. Can be read as a standalone.
Lady Verity is one of the owners of Elegant Occassion, a party panning business for the ton. She has a good memory for people and faces and she’s suspicious of Rafe Wolfford initially as someone who was at one of their parties in the past. She decides on a tentative trust for now, but will diligently be watching for anything amiss.
Rafe Wolfford is a spy. He has attended parties by Elegant Occassion in the past in disguise. His current assignment is to find out more about the company and unearth any treacherous dealings and the best way to do that according to his commander, is to use his actual title and position. It’s foolproof since he is a member of the elite in the ton. What could go wrong?

This not your standard regency romance. Spies, lies and an ex-fiancee out for revenge have Verity and Rafe working together closer than either expected.

🎧 I alternated between an ecopy and an audiobook copy of this book narrated by Beverly A. Crick. This narrator does the full series and has a wide catalog of historical romances using a wonderful British accent as well as vocalizing emotions that will draw you into the story. This is one of the main advantages to listening to an audiobook: the voice, accents and liveliness of the acting. Of course, you have to be able to understand an accent enough to be confident in listening and I think this narrative is clear enough for most anyone. I did listen at multiple speeds for review purposes and ended up listening mostly at my preferred speed of 1.5.

A bit of mystery and a small beginning of the women’s movement and most importantly, a romance that neither expect but seems perfect in the end.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and the publisher RB Media.

This is an entertaining, well-written, steamy, historical romance novel. It has an intelligent, likable female protagonist, an engaging male protagonist, beautiful, vividly described settings, sizzling chemistry, intrigue, supportive family, a heartwarming romance, and a satisfying conclusion. This is the third entry in Ms. Jeffries' outstanding The Designing Debutantes series, and it can be read as a stand alone, but it is even better when read in order. I listened to the audio book, and the narrator, Ms. Beverley A. Crick, has a captivating voice and does a marvelous job voicing the characters.

Here I go again. Third book in the trilogy and I haven't read the other two. New to me author. This is just a "no-keep looking" if ever there was one. But I just finished a book performed by narrator Beverley A. Crick, she made what was a tedious book into something I couldn't stop listening to - so momentary insanity and I found this one up on NetGalley. Reading the two pervious books would be recommended, but I quickly caught up with the overarching plot. Courting a lady under false pretenses is never a good idea. I loved the romance with a touch of mystery/suspense plot. Verity was a really smart heroine and Rafe was an awesome hero, even if he was keeping secrets. I love it when the hero and heroine work together to solve the mystery. Beverley A. Crick is one of the best audio performers I have heard, and I look forward to hearing other books by Sabrina Jeffries she has voiced.

Lady Verity is the youngest and only unwed sister of the three who have created Elegant Occasions, a business that kept them solvent after a family scandal and being cut off by their father. They create dazzling events for the London elite and match a few couples too. Verity is an expert when it comes to the culinary delights and is quite content with her life and the business. She has no plans for romance or marriage after being burned by romance in the past.

Rafe Wolfford is the heir to a Viscount and a retired military man whose missions may never be able to be told. He is on one last mission - find the person who is leaking sensitive information to the French. He has been observing Lady Verity's family for over a year and now he needs to get closer to them. He is sure someone in the business or close to the family is his leak. Becoming engaged to the lovely Verity is not in his plan, but will ultimately work to his benefit, if the very perceptive Verity doesn't out him first.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary audio Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

We had a great time reading this book. We love historical spies and independent women, so a book that includes a spy hooking up with an independent woman in a bathing machine is totally up our alley. We also especially liked the way Verity (the FMC) knows from the beginning that something about Rafe (the MMC) just doesn't add up. For months, he's been haunting her company's events (she's a Regency event planner with her sisters!) in disguise. Verity never forgets a face, so she knows right away that Rafe is the guy who dressed up as a bush (seriously) to infiltrate a garden party. But he's denying they've ever met and seems to have the receipts to back it up...

You see, Rafe HAS been spying on them to try to discover a French agent who seems to have a connection with their family. He's decided that he's gathered as much information as he can covertly, so he'll pretend to court Verity to get into their inner circle. But soon enough his courtship starts to feel very real.

There's just something special about characters who communicate with each other: Rafe can't tell Verity what he's holding back, but by the time he proposes she knows he's being as honest as he can be. We both really appreciated the nuanced take on his profession, and the fact that when she's finally brought in on everything, Verity has a lot to add to his investigation.

We thought this was the best in the series, so much so that if you haven't read the first two, we'd recommend skipping straight to this one!

A very sweet historical romance with characters, I enjoyed. The plot was at times a bit convoluted. A few layers could have scraped off with nothing lost to the overall story. It didn't really add anything new to the genre, but that is perfectly alright. Sometimes you just need some escapism, and this is certainly that. I did enjoy how Jeffries didn't fall into the common cliché trap of secrets and misunderstandings, which would have been very easy with a book about spies and secret missions. Verity and Rafe are cute together, and I liked how we also got a good dose of Diana, Eliza and their husbands.

I loved finally getting Verity's story. She's so incredibly smart and resourceful. Rafe didn't stand a chance. Of course, he was going to fall in love with her even if he was trying to concentrate entirely on his mission.

Accidentally His was such a wonderful conclusion to this series. Each book was a pleasure to read, and I truly hope the ladies of Elegant Occasions end up being featured in more books!

I don’t know why the titles in this book series changed. I liked the alliterative progression this series started with A Duke for Diana. The second book initially was going to be An Earl for Eliza, then this should be a Viscount for Verity.

I always thought Verity’s “phantom” was her former fiancé but I was pleasantly surprised and glad Accidentally His went in a less predictable direction.

Sabrina Jeffries always adds intrigue to her romances and Accidentally His is no exception. Someone is sending military secrets to France and that someone is in Verity’s family. Rafe has been sent to spy on the family and now needs to embed himself to get closer to finding the traitor. Who better to “court” than the youngest sister and still single Verity.

As this is the last book in the series, all the sisters and their husbands are included.

Accidentally His is an entertaining and romantic conclusion to the Designing Debutantes series. I was looking forward to reading Verity’s story from the first book when Verity was one of the only ones who noticed a mysterious figure who frequented their gatherings. In the book, we learn who this enigmatic man is and the reasons for his secrecy.

Verity’s story feels a bit different from her sisters, which I liked. The sisters are all so different, so it makes sense that their stories and romances would be too. Accidentally His has more danger and suspense, and the stakes are higher as Rafe works to uncover threats to the country.

The story didn’t focus too much on the Elegant Occasions, which disappointed me a little. I love that these sisters built a thriving and successful business, and it was at the forefront of the first two stories, so it surprised me that it didn’t have as big a role in Verity’s story.

Of course, for me, the highlight of the story is the swoon-worthy romance between Verity and Rafe is delightful. They have a ton of chemistry, but their road to happiness is marred by secrets that Rafe fears will ruin their growing feelings for each other. I enjoyed seeing how they slowly opened up to each other and learned to trust each other. Considering their backgrounds and experiences with family and country, this is no easy feat.

Overall, I thought this was a fun conclusion to the story, and though it’s the third in the trilogy, it could be read as a stand-alone. That being said, I love that the main characters from the first two books have secondary roles in this one. It highlights the overarching themes of sisterhood and taking a chance on love.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

You’ve gotta love a spy and debutante story!

No ordinary spy, Colonel Raphael Wolfford (the Chameleon), is a very secretive English spy and heir to the Viscount Wolfford. Rafe is trying to find out who’s behind information about British troop movements being passed to Napoleon
Lady Verity Harper is no ordinary debutante.
She’s the daughter of a divorced woman whose scandal became Verity’s when her fiancé, the toad Lord Minton, called off their engagement and let society think that Verity was not a decent young woman. “The gossips said [Minton] had surely refused to align himself with [Verity] because [she] was a licentious jade like [her] mother.” Minton had made sure her character was assassinated.
Verity’s also smart as a whip and has noticed a figure whom she dubs the phantom a who appears at various of their Elegant Occasions functions over the last eighteen months. Nothing specific just the jawline, angle of head, despite different hair colouring.
Of course it’s Rafe and he’s quite chagrined when he realizes how many times Verity’s has caught him out and been puzzled by him.
So spies, smugglers, puzzles, obnoxious ex fiancé’s, danger and guile stalk the pages as our combined heroes’s exploits roll off the page in the most beguiling way.
Once again Jeffries has imbued her characters with strength, integrity and believability.
Great fun!

This is such a lovely addition to this great lighthearted low angst series by Sabrina Jeffries. I was reading this with a grin on my face the whole time. I was so curious to see what kind of partner Verity would end up with and Rafe is honestly just perfect for her. They fit together so well and actually communicate openly (well, as far as he can communicate about his spying activities for the British government) with each other. Seeing Rafe slowly realize that he is falling for Verity was so wholesome. Both of them overcoming their fears and growing to trust each other.

Can be read as a standalone, but for full effect it is a lot of fun to see how Verity gets worked up more and more throughout the first 2 books trying to figure out who is crashing all the Elegant Occasions parties.

Once again this series features another MMC that I fell hard for. He is just so sweet and swoonworthy and well, I am a huge sucker for the ‘who did this to you?’ microtrope. Rafe getting worked up every time he saw Milton made me so giddy. Then his devotion to his uncle and how he really wants to do all of this for him, ugh this man makes me want to go googly eyed and exclaiming ‘awwwww’ every time he says anything.

A huge part of this story is about the family that the sisters created and how Rafe desperately wants to belong to such a family, reading the last few chapters really made me tear up while grinning like an idiot. Grenwood and Foxstead both show up in their swoonworthy ways and now I really want to go back and reread A Duke for Diana and What Happens in the Ballroom.

I also want to mention that I didn’t immediately guess who the bad guy was in this! I rarely find books like this one where I don’t call it upon meeting the character. I actually felt a bit stupid that I didn’t trust that nagging feeling in my head that said my suspicions were on the wrong character all along.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for providing an ARC.

So exciting! I love a Sabrina Jeffries romance, and Accidentally His is a marvelous, edge of your seat mystery with a hearty helping of steamy romance! I haven't read the first two books in this series, and I had no trouble following along. I'm definitely going to be getting them as soon as possible.

These are terrific characters, and Jeffries builds such marvelous attraction between Verity and Rafe - it was impossible for me to stop listening. I enjoyed this audiobook straight through and Beverley A. Crick delivers a fantastic performance.

As a viscount's heir, Colonel Rafe Wolfford knows he must take a wife someday, but she must be the right sort of wife, and one that won't delve into his escapades as a spy. One thing is for certain: the forthright and perceptive Lady Verity is altogether the wrong choice. But Rafe is on a mission to discover whether Verity Harper or anyone else at Elegant Occasions is leaking information to the French, and so he commences a faux courtship, determined to keep his real feelings out of it ! With one disastrous engagement behind her, Verity won't easily open her heart again, and although Rafe's charm catches her off guard, she knows he's harbouring secrets. But when Verity's ex-fiancé tries to ruin her reputation, Rafe offers his hand, and she has little choice but to accept.
Verity is the final Harper sister to find love. A very well written, book which ticked all the boxes for me, strong characters, sizzling chemistry, witty banter & spies. I loved both Rafe & Verity & how they were so good at wrong footing the other. There is the answer as to who the mystery Phantom is - & Verity wasn’t making it up!. Rafe is an undercover agent for the Government & has been trying to find a traitor for over a year but is closing in on them. Verity is no shrinking violet & I loved her intelligence. Together the couple are a force to be reckoned with. There are surprises, secrets & lies, I was surprised when the traitor was revealed. I read this book straight through & finished it at silly o’clock in the morning as I couldn’t put it down

I enjoyed this book more than its predecessors. As a romance it is a cute and heartfelt story with characters you can root for. I think Verity and Rafe were both a lot of fun and at times awkward and sweet which made for an interesting read on the journey to their HEA. I think I expected Rafe to be a lot more stoic in the beginning than he is and while I appreciate that, I feel like his characterization as this amazing spy whose disguises are legendary kind of fell flat because Verity saw through so much! I get that it’s supposed to be funny and ironic but I found myself thinking - really? This dude is a mega spy? That being said I enjoyed Verity’s attempts to figure out his identity.

I feel like the background story of Rafe and his uncle wasn’t super fleshed out. As with her other books in this series I think Jeffries tends to pull out random plot twists and throw in family drama willy nilly for shock value without really building it up properly. The deus ex machina of the big clue felt silly. The 3rd act twist of who the villain is didn’t really feel earned because we barely get to see that character in the series let alone in these books.

As I have said before in my review of book 2 - I would have liked the books to keep the naming convention of book 1. A Viscount for Verity is so much more memorable than Accidentally His (which could describe any number of books I’ve read this month alone).

We have Verity! I was so excited to get my hands on this book. I’ve loved everything about this sister and couldn’t wait to see how her story was going to play out. To be paired up with her phantom? Oh my! It was absolutely thrilling!

https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c4/de/52/c4de5210f618f21b5d25680a67e6708f.jpg

I appreciated Verity’s strength and independence. For a woman of her time she was more than capable of doing her part in the sister’s business as well as holding her own within society. It was so fun to watch her meeting with Rafe and her suspicions of him being her Jack in the Green. As they continue to meet, her suspicions continue to grow and I couldn’t wait to find out what her reaction was going to be.

https://i.pinimg.com/564x/63/c4/e1/63c4e118a4405e43b7f2faf5e88092f3.jpg

While Rafe isn’t the most alpha of heroes in this series, he won my heart not only by his relationship with his uncle, but by his concern over Verity’s reaction when his truth would be revealed. And just because he wasn’t the most alpha does not mean he didn’t hold his own. His actions with Verity were hot and steamy as well as deeply, achingly protective. And oh my! At one point my heart just ached for him.

This was so much fun reading! It’s filled with everything I love about historical romance and it felt genuine to the time. With the perfect blend of humor, mystery, steamy goodness and angst, this was pure perfection for me. Add in the fact that at one time I found myself actually welling up and swallowing down tears, and this makes my first favorite of the year.

Guess I’ve read too many historical romances and have become jaded. At about halfway through I just wanted to find out who the spy was. Good one as it’s the last person you’d suspect. Nothing wrong with this other than Verity who got annoying.

I have enjoyed each book in this series so far, but I think this may be my favorite! I really enjoyed the pairing of an over-confident spy and a cynical spinster who was perceptive enough to figure him out. Or maybe he was just a really bad spy? It was funny that she determined his identity so quickly, and he even remarked on it later, asking her not to tell anyone that she knew who he was all along. The banter was great between these two, and they kept each other on their toes throughout the story. I was engaged from cover to cover, and may I just say, that cover is...*chef's kiss*. He is absolutely scrumptious and knows it. Also, it is a great match for the character description, a soldier who is very serious and good at the smolder.

Lady Verity knows that not all is as it seems with Rafe Wolfford, the heir to a viscountcy, when he shows up to a benefit event hosted by her family's business, Elegant Occasions, and spends a large sum of money to have her design a meal for him. No man who has just met her would do that, especially not as a gallant gesture to keep her out of the clutches of her ex-fiance. In fact, he seems suspiciously familiar, almost like the mysterious Jack of the Green she has been trying to identify for ages. Rafe Wolfford is not used to being perceived so clearly, having worked as a spy for the British government during the war. Although everyone thinks he is retired now, to devote himself to his ailing uncle and prepare to take the reins of his inheritance, he is secretly continuing to work as a spy to uncover who is leaking secrets to the French. And Verity's family is at the top of his suspect list. Getting close to her is all part of the plan...until they end up engaged, and he suddenly wants to make this marriage work. In spite of all the secrets yet to be revealed.

Both of these characters lent towards being grumpy, making this a rare grump-grump pairing. While Rafe tried to be charming, it was entertaining to see him fumble at times, thrown off my Verity's perceptive nature. Verity was quite a no-nonsense sort of person, more happy taking a backseat to the festivities than being the belle of the ball. After getting her heart broken by her former fiance, she had no interest in getting involved romantically with anyone. However, she found Rafe extremely hard to resist, and he likewise found her irresistible. He was confident that he could keep business and pleasure separate, but as they spent more and more time together, there was no way things were going to remain platonic. The chemistry between them was strong, and keeping their hands to themselves was just not an option. I loved that Rafe was trying to be so careful with Verity and her feelings, even when it meant he wasn't entirely following the directive of his superior. I felt for him, having to be a spy of someone he was coming to have feelings for. And when they found themselves married, he took just a little while to realize that if he could be married to anyone, it would be Verity. They were truly a wonderful match and my favorite couple of the series.

Sabrina Jeffries has enchanted her readers as always! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Quite a interesting story. Rafe has been a presence in the other books. He was trying to find the french spy. He turned up at some of Verity's sister's events in disguise. He is the heir to his uncle. The uncle is a general and also a spy who was shot by the person Rafe is seeking. Verity thinks she recognises Rafe. She was let down by a Lord Minton, who dumped her when her parents got divorced, Mainy kisses for the first half of the book and then a bit more passion further on. I suppose this could be the last one in the series as there were just three sisters. I guessed about Rafe's parentage. It seemed more of a friends romance than IMO and all out passionfest, especially on Verity's part. I enjoyed the book.

Have not had a chance to read anything of Sabrina Jeffries lately and was happy to have the opportunity to listen to “Accidently His”. Ms. Jeffries is a fav author to this reader and the story was well-written and drawn out a bit, but fanfav narrator, Beverley Crick did a very good job of narrating this story that keeps you captivated with the characters. I loved the banter between Rafe and Verity and the mystery and humor that went along that made this audiobook so delightful. I love steamy in my historical romances, and this did not disappoint. This is a must-listen and I am looking forward to listening to the others in this series.

Rafe Wolfford is looking for a spy passing Wellington's plans to the French. He suspects someone in Lady Verity's family. She and her sisters run Elegant Occasions. Their auction for the Foundling Hospital, is Rafe's opportunity to gain an invitation to the Elegant Occasions house party. Verity believes Rafe is the Phantom, a master of disguises to everyone but her. Rafe keeps his secrets to himself, but Verity's guesses are close to the truth. Kisses and seduction catch them in an unexpected partnership. Reads at a steady pace with a few may or may not be surprises. Descriptive sex.

Beverley A. Crick brings Sabrina Jeffries' 'Accidentally His' to life with a captivating narration that perfectly captures the essence of Regency romance. Crick's voice, with its British charm, adds a delightful layer to the storytelling, making it a pleasure for my ears.
The story unfolds with Verity, a strong and independent woman navigating love and business in the regal world. Crick adeptly distinguishes characters, seamlessly switching between feminine and masculine voices. Rafe, the viscount's heir, emerges as a charming and protective hero, and the narrator skillfully conveys the depth of his emotions.

The blend of humor, mystery, steamy romance, and historical authenticity makes this audiobook a delightful experience. Crick's narration enhances the story's appeal, making 'Accidentally His' a must-listen for fans of Regency romance.
While I haven’t read the previous two books in the series, I didn’t felt like missing much and I’m looking forward to reading more from the author in the future as she is undoubtedly one of my favourite historical romance novelist.

Very grateful to the publisher for my alc, opinions are my own.

Can we all agree this should’ve been called a Viscount for Verity? The new titles for the rest of the series are terrible. Accidentally His hardly makes sense. But Verity takes a backseat to Rafe. He’s a more developed character, but not much of a spy if Verity’s been seeing through his disguises. She does so little I get why they put him on the cover.

The description made me think this was a marriage of convenience, but that didn’t happen until 3/4 of the way in. Too insta-lust for me and it won’t make much sense if you haven’t read the other books. I’ve been eager to see the Phantom storyline come to fruition, but this had a slow start, the matchmaking business was almost nonexistent, and the spy storyline not as strong as I hoped. Go read a Duke for Diana instead.
