Time and a second chance
I really enjoyed reading about the LitRPG adventures of Tim, Pixel and Boog. The story had a great balance of humor, real life issues, danger, machinations, supernatural elements, fighting, and morality. Tim is a middle manager at a software company whose life recently imploded - cheating spouse, work trouble and living in a motel. Just as he’s about to be hit by a bus, he is yanked into the reality show “Time Chaser” run by superior alien entities and broadcast to the universe. This season the contestants are pulled from multiple versions of earth and throughout the human timeline at the moment right before their death. Now the chasers have to compete LitRPG style against bosses, other chasers, and the environment. They can obtain achievements and penalties etc all with the help of an AI FAST unit. All for the chance to maybe, maybe not die in real life and potentially fix an issue in that life or potentially destroy their version of earth. Tim just wants to get back for his 5 yo son Jeremy and try to stay a decent person in the process. I loved the interplay between Tim, Pixel and Boog and that Tim’s character is a sarcastic, naive, messy, lucky, kind of dumb, and awkward man who regularly screws up which makes him a very likeable and relatable hero. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, supernatural creatures, evil entities, henchmen, loyal friends, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. I will definitely keep reading the series to see what happens next with Tim and his friends. 4.25 stars
