Time Chaser: A LitRPG Game of Death

Rate this book
TIME IS NOT ON HIS SIDE.

My name’s Tim McAvoy. I was a mid-level software manager from suburbia until the day I caught my wife with another man. I thought our divorce was the worst fate imaginable, but then I met my end at the grill of a speeding bus, only to realize I didn’t have a clue.

Whisked away at the moment of my death to a dimension beyond time and space, I now find myself an unwilling contestant in a multiversal game where brutal bloodshed is considered entertainment. My only chance to get my life back is to win. But if I lose, not only will I die for real this time, but my entire world, including my son, could be erased from existence.

With a jaded AI by my side and a juiced-up squash racket in hand, I'll have to face off against the worst horrors history has to offer as I race to complete the first of twelve increasingly deadly levels.

The rules of this game are I need to survive and grow stronger while always keeping one eye on the clock – because once time runs out, there won’t be any more second chances.

----------

From Rick Gualtieri, the twisted mind behind Bill The Vampire and Bigfoot Hunters, comes a brand new gamelit adventure. Time Chaser is the pulse-pounding tale of an average guy trapped in a world of danger, nonstop terror, and the bloodthirsty howls of an audience with an insatiable appetite for destruction.

Fans of Matt Dinniman and James Hunter won't want to miss this time-spanning thrill ride full of action, suspense, and heavy amounts of snark.

Content Warning: This book contains violence, gore, swearing, and disturbing scenarios.

Time and a second chance

I really enjoyed reading about the LitRPG adventures of Tim, Pixel and Boog. The story had a great balance of humor, real life issues, danger, machinations, supernatural elements, fighting, and morality. Tim is a middle manager at a software company whose life recently imploded - cheating spouse, work trouble and living in a motel. Just as he’s about to be hit by a bus, he is yanked into the reality show “Time Chaser” run by superior alien entities and broadcast to the universe. This season the contestants are pulled from multiple versions of earth and throughout the human timeline at the moment right before their death. Now the chasers have to compete LitRPG style against bosses, other chasers, and the environment. They can obtain achievements and penalties etc all with the help of an AI FAST unit. All for the chance to maybe, maybe not die in real life and potentially fix an issue in that life or potentially destroy their version of earth. Tim just wants to get back for his 5 yo son Jeremy and try to stay a decent person in the process. I loved the interplay between Tim, Pixel and Boog and that Tim’s character is a sarcastic, naive, messy, lucky, kind of dumb, and awkward man who regularly screws up which makes him a very likeable and relatable hero. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, supernatural creatures, evil entities, henchmen, loyal friends, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. I will definitely keep reading the series to see what happens next with Tim and his friends. 4.25 stars

What a Ride!

I have been SO happy to have discovered the immense talent that is Rick Gualtieri. His Vampire Bill books are excellent. Lit RPG books are a new genre for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this 1st entry that was filled with his signature humor and excellent characters. The ideas and settings were fun and great nods to
RPG games old and current.

I am already eagerly awaiting the next entry in this hopefully long and enjoyable new series.

An interesting read from Rick. You can almost feel the dice being rolled as the story progresses. Random monster encounters, boss battles, curses, boons, and woot.

It was a fun read with lots of humor. It's a bit of a departure from his other series, but his humor comes through loud and clear.

I'll give the next one a chance, too.

If you are a gamer you might find this more appropriate. Not for me.
