Humanity is about to unravel, and Clea Hart holds the final thread.
A light-wielding warrior known as a Veilin, she’s stolen the cursed Deadlock Medallion—an artifact of legend that could spell doom for mankind’s last three cities. Escaping from enemies she once called friends, Clea knows she has to destroy it, and that means returning home.
The forest of Shambelin is the only thing standing in her way, but it’s rife with traps, tricks, and beasts. She can’t survive it alone. In desperation, she accepts the help of a mysterious man named Ryson.
The forest is his domain, and Clea and Ryson are as different as the sun and moon that shape its illusions. Together, they face the wilderness, the medallion’s influence, and the woes of their declining world. These challenges unite them, but when Ryson’s secrets come to light, Clea realizes that the horrors of the forest are nothing but a playground to his past.
Their connection is undeniable, her mission is critical, but trusting him could be the last mistake she ever makes.
* * * Throughout the day, he couldn’t help but notice the contrasts between them. She soiled her hands to heal, and he’d soiled his to kill. Yet her hand had found his so gently among the crowd, and she’d asked him to stay with her. He wondered how she would treat him if she knew how different they truly were. What would she do if she discovered how many lives he’d destroyed?
* * * “You claim to heal with your hands,” he whispered, “and you’d use them to wound me with such a tender gesture?”
She felt trapped between two intentions, no longer able to explain herself.
“I’m trying to save you,” she replied with a stifled breath.
The blade of his other hand traced over her collarbone and then her neck. She sucked in a breath and flattened her back against the column behind her. He’d only mimicked a version of her gesture, but she reacted as if it were his touch that caused pain.
“But who’s going to save you?” he asked, his eyes full of a pushing and pulling tide, yanking her forward and shoving her back as he whispered threats but kept his tone gentle.

She is a creative soul who has dabbled in many odds and ends, from fire eating and pottery, to clowning and jujitsu, embracing the adventure in every aspect of life.
When she’s not working or writing, she enjoys adventures with loved ones, and her dog, Sage.
In her debut novel, A.K. Chandler crafts an enthralling dark fantasy that masterfully weaves together elements of adventure, romance, and philosophical exploration. Light Locked emerges as a fresh voice in the genre, offering readers a uniquely compelling perspective on the eternal struggle between light and darkness.
World Building: A Dying Land of Light and Shadow
The story unfolds in Shambelin, a continent teetering on the brink of extinction, where humanity's last three cities stand as bastions against an encroaching forest filled with monsters and darkness. Chandler's world-building is exceptional, creating a rich tapestry of history, magic, and social dynamics that feels both familiar and refreshingly original.
The magic system, centered around the opposing forces of ansra (light energy) and cien (dark energy), is particularly innovative. The author presents these forces not as simple good versus evil, but as complex natural phenomena that shape both the physical world and human nature. This nuanced approach adds depth to the story's themes and conflicts.
Character Dynamics: A Dance of Light and Shadow
Clea Hart: The Reluctant Symbol
The protagonist, Clea Hart, represents a masterful subversion of typical fantasy heroine tropes. As a Veilin princess trained in healing rather than combat, she challenges traditional notions of strength and heroism. Her journey from sheltered royal to determined fugitive is compelling, marked by genuine growth and internal conflict.
Ryson: The Enigmatic Guide
Ryson emerges as one of the most fascinating characters in recent fantasy literature. His complex nature, revealed layer by layer throughout the narrative, creates a constant tension that drives the story forward. The dynamic between Clea and Ryson forms the heart of the novel, their relationship evolving in unexpected and thought-provoking ways.
Themes and Symbolism
Identity and Transformation
The novel explores deep themes of identity and self-discovery. Through Clea's journey, Chandler examines how our roles and responsibilities shape who we are, and whether we can truly choose our own path in a world that demands so much from us.
Power and Its Price
The concept of power - its nature, its cost, and its responsibility - runs throughout the narrative. The Deadlock Medallion serves as both literal plot device and powerful metaphor for the corrupting nature of power and the price of wielding it.
Writing Style and Narrative Structure
Chandler's prose is elegant and evocative, striking a perfect balance between poetic description and driving narrative. Her ability to shift between intimate character moments and broader world-building demonstrates remarkable control over pacing and tone.
The author excels particularly in:
• Creating atmospheric tension • Crafting meaningful dialogue that reveals character • Building complex relationships between characters • Weaving together personal and political narratives
Notable Elements
The Forest as Character
The forest of Shambelin itself becomes a character in the story, its shifting nature and deadly beauty serving as both setting and antagonist. Chandler's descriptions of the forest's transformations between day and night are particularly memorable.
Cultural Depth
The novel's world features rich cultural elements, from the structured society of Loda to the mysterious traditions of the Insednians. Each culture feels distinct and well-realized, contributing to the story's themes and conflicts.
Impact and Resonance
Light Locked speaks to contemporary concerns while maintaining its fantasy framework. Themes of environmental decline, political responsibility, and personal identity feel particularly relevant to modern readers.
Technical Achievement
What sets this novel apart is Chandler's ability to maintain multiple layers of tension throughout the narrative:
• Personal conflicts within characters • Interpersonal dynamics between characters • Broader political and social tensions • The overarching threat of The Decline
Critical Analysis
The novel's greatest strength lies in its ability to challenge genre conventions while delivering a satisfying fantasy experience. Chandler avoids common pitfalls of debut novels, demonstrating remarkable control over her narrative and themes.
Final Thoughts
Light Locked announces A.K. Chandler as a significant new voice in fantasy literature. The novel successfully combines familiar fantasy elements with fresh perspectives and deep thematic resonance. It's a promising start to what could become a significant contribution to the genre.
This debut suggests exciting possibilities for future works from Chandler, leaving readers eager to see how she will continue to develop her unique voice and vision in subsequent novels.
Light Locked stands as a remarkable achievement in fantasy literature, offering readers a fresh perspective on familiar themes while creating something entirely new. It's a must-read for fans of thoughtful, character-driven fantasy that doesn't sacrifice action and adventure for deeper meaning.
Having carefully read "Light Locked" by A.K. Chandler, I'm struck by how masterfully the author weaves together elements of dark fantasy with profound character development. The story follows Clea Hart, the last princess of Loda, as she navigates a world where light and darkness aren't just metaphors but tangible forces that shape reality.
Chandler's prose is atmospheric and sensual, particularly in scenes depicting the interplay between ansra (light energy) and cien (dark energy). The author has created a unique magic system where healing and destruction are intimately linked, much like the relationship between the two main characters, Clea and Ryson. Their dynamic is compelling - she's a healer struggling with her own mortality while he's an ancient being grappling with his fragmented identity.
The world-building is rich and complex, centered around three remaining cities in a continent besieged by a corrupted forest. The author skillfully uses this setting to explore themes of duality - how light can blind as much as illuminate, and how darkness can both corrupt and liberate. The Venennin, dark counterparts to the light-wielding Veilin, are particularly fascinating as they embody this complexity.
What sets this book apart is its exploration of power and identity. Clea's journey from sheltered princess to potential queen isn't just about gaining strength - it's about understanding the grey areas between light and darkness, duty and desire. The author excels at showing how personal transformation often requires embracing rather than rejecting our contradictions.
The pacing builds beautifully to a climactic sequence in King Kartheen's castle that manages to be both viscerally intense and psychologically nuanced. Chandler has achieved something remarkable here - a dark fantasy that doesn't just rely on its supernatural elements but uses them to illuminate deeper truths about human nature and the price of existence in a world that's slowly declining.
This is sophisticated fantasy that lingers in the mind long after the final page, asking questions about what we sacrifice in the name of survival versus truth.
Light Locked is a mesmerizing tale that delves deep into the eternal dance between light and shadow. A.K. Chandler crafts a world where magic pulses through every page, yet it's the raw humanity of the characters that truly captivates.
The story follows Clea Hart, a Veilin princess whose healing abilities set her apart in a warrior culture. When she flees her city with a dangerous artifact called the Deadlock Medallion, she forms an unlikely alliance with Ryson, a mysterious guide harboring dark secrets. Their journey through monster-haunted forests becomes a profound exploration of identity, power, and the price of existence.
What sets this novel apart is Chandler's nuanced treatment of traditional fantasy elements. The magic system - built around ansra (light energy) and cien (dark energy) - serves as both literal power and metaphorical framework for examining how people navigate between hope and despair, duty and desire. The forest setting itself becomes a character, shifting between deadly beauty by day and raw horror by night.
The relationship between Clea and Ryson forms the beating heart of the narrative. Their evolution from reluctant allies to something more complex is masterfully rendered, full of tension and unspoken understanding. Through their interactions, Chandler explores how connection can both heal and wound, how truth can both free and bind.
The climactic castle sequence showcases Chandler's talent for weaving action, emotion, and revelation into a seamless whole. The scene pulses with physical and psychological intensity as Clea confronts both external threats and internal truths about herself and her world.
By the end, Light Locked transcends typical fantasy tropes to become a meditation on power, sacrifice, and the cost of protecting what matters most. Clea's journey from sheltered healer to potential queen mirrors larger questions about how we maintain our humanity while wielding great responsibility.
This is a richly imagined, emotionally resonant work that will stay with readers long after the final page. Chandler has created something rare - a fantasy that entertains while illuminating deeper truths about the human heart.
In Light Locked, A.K. Chandler delivers a spellbinding tale that masterfully explores the complex interplay between healing and destruction, duty and desire. The story unfolds in a richly realized world where magic manifests as ansra (light energy) and cien (dark energy), forces that shape both the physical realm and the souls of those who wield them.
At its core stands Clea Hart, a uniquely gifted Veilin healer who must transport the dangerous Deadlock Medallion through monster-infested wilderness. Her journey becomes intertwined with Ryson, an enigmatic guide whose silver eyes hint at a dark and powerful past. Their relationship develops with exquisite tension - each interaction charged with unspoken understanding and dangerous possibility.
Chandler's worldbuilding shines through vivid detail and atmospheric power. The forest setting transforms from deceptive beauty by day to raw horror by night, mirroring the story's deeper themes about truth and illusion. The author populates this world with fascinating creatures like the Venennin - dark counterparts to the light-wielding Veilin - and reaping shades that hunt in packs through the shadows.
The novel's climactic castle sequence showcases Chandler's talent for weaving action, emotion, and revelation into a seamless tapestry. As Clea confronts both physical dangers and profound truths about herself, the scene pulses with psychological and supernatural intensity.
What elevates Light Locked beyond typical fantasy fare is its thoughtful exploration of transformation. Through Clea's evolution from sheltered princess to potential queen, Chandler examines how power changes those who possess it, how truth can both liberate and constrain, and how healing sometimes requires embracing our own darkness.
This is a story that resonates on multiple levels - as a gripping adventure, as a complex character study, and as a meditation on the price of protecting what we hold dear. Chandler has crafted something remarkable: a fantasy that entertains while illuminating deeper truths about the nature of light and shadow in us all.
In the haunting depths of A.K. Chandler's Light Locked, shadows dance with brilliance, and darkness cradles moments of startling beauty. Like moonlight piercing through dead branches, this tale illuminates the spaces between what we believe and what we become.
Through the eyes of Clea Hart, a healer-princess marked by illness and isolation, we traverse a world where magic flows in two currents - the healing light of ansra and the seductive darkness of cien. When she flees her city bearing a mysterious artifact, the Deadlock Medallion, Clea finds herself drawn into an alliance with Ryson, a guide whose silver eyes mirror secrets as ancient as the forest itself.
Chandler weaves her narrative like a tapestry of starlight and shadow, each thread shimmering with possibility. The forest setting pulses with malevolent life, transforming from sun-dappled deception to night-shrouded truth. Within this realm of shifting loyalties and hidden powers, monsters wear beautiful faces and salvation sometimes wears the mask of destruction.
The relationship between Clea and Ryson unfolds like a dark flower blooming at midnight. Their connection transcends simple categorization, becoming instead a dance of opposing forces - light and dark, healing and harm, truth and illusion. Through their journey, Chandler explores how touch can both wound and mend, how love can both save and destroy.
In the novel's crescendo within a cursed castle, power and vulnerability collide in a symphony of revelation. Here, Chandler's prose soars highest, painting scenes of violence and tenderness with equal grace. The author shows us how strength can bloom from weakness, how light can birth shadows, how the path to salvation sometimes leads through darkness.
Light Locked is more than a fantasy - it's a luminous exploration of the prices we pay for power, the sacrifices we make for duty, and the transformative nature of connection. Like ansra flowing through a healer's hands, this story touches deep wounds and leaves us forever changed.
In A.K. Chandler's unforgettable story Light Locked, readers will follow the story of a young princess named Clea Hart. Clea's main objective is to travel through the woods with the Deadlock Medallion and deliver it back home to be destroyed. However, an uneasy presence, encounters with blood-hungry creatures, and evil kings will challenge her every step of the way. Led only by a man named Ryson, who seems irritated by her very bright outlook on life, things take a strange turn for Clea as her reality is ripped apart and new details about the world she lives in come to light.
As a new reader of A.K. Chandler's work, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the writing style. I don't typically connect well with perspectives that are in the third person, but for some reason, it made this story all the better. I enjoyed being an outsider looking in at the experiences of both Clea and Ryson during their journey together. One critique that I did find, however, was that there were a few times where side characters would pop up, and I wished I had more of a backstory on who they were. I understood that they were important to the plot and main characters, but I didn't feel as though I knew enough about them. I wanted to know why they were important, not just that they were.
Light Locked is a story written for those who love fantasy and action with tropes such as coming of age, antagonist to ally, magical artifacts, and 'the chosen one.' I had so much fun diving into this magical tale and cannot wait to read the next installment of the Light Locked series.
I want to thank the author and Library Thing for giving me an ARC of Light Locked. All opinions in this review are my own.
A TRUE slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers, dark fantasy that exists where light, dark, and morally gray meet
Light Locked has all my favorite parts of an enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, fantasy romance. Clea and Ryson both have deep seated prejudices that should make them hate or even want to kill the other, but there’s also a compelling curiosity between them both that allows them to move past that. Clea is sheltered without being cloyingly naive. Ryson is bitter, and bluntly honest while still maintaining the ability to be tender. They’re both hiding their own secrets and unwilling to fully trust the other person while being put in a position where they need to. The romance subtly builds with so much yearning and tension and their bond forms without them even realizing it. It uses some of my favorite tropes in a way that serves the story and doesn't just feel like checking boxes off a list.
The story is full of complex character development and a plot that has a clear direction forward. It’s dark fantasy, reminding me of the vibes I got while reading One Dark Window while remaining wholly unique to itself. My only regret is that I didn’t have the time to devour this in one sitting and really immerse myself into it.
I’ve already recommended this to my friends, would recommend this to other readers, and am partially through a deep internet search to make sure I know exactly when book two comes out so I can get back to this story immediately.
BLUF: I’m a fan. This book gets four stars for writing style and world-building. I perceived continuity issues, which made the plot vague at times, so it's not a perfect five for me. The writing style is beautiful, like epic poem vibes. Sentences are constructed with pure descriptive emotion. The text is poetic prose. The unique world is easy to see in my mind’s eye. It’s a high fantasy world that doesn’t seem to be Earth but flows with intricate landscapes, creatures, societies, etc. The plot meandered due to some small continuity issues. Since I have an active imagination, I was able to fill in the blanks and shifts in the story, so I still enjoyed it very much and plan to read book two.
A little slow in the start, this really grabbed my attention about 25 percent in. To see the growth of the characters and depth of the writing made it so much better than I anticipated. The cliffhanger has me itching to read the next book. Well written, the author did well with editing before putting it out as an ARC. There are some twists that even i didn't expect, which is hard with as much fantasy as I read.
I got this book thinking it would have a bit more romance in it than it did, but I am not at all disappointed by this.
It's got a strong and gripping opening. Amazing detail, world building, and character development. The side characters were interesting and fun. Every chapter or so a new conflict would arise to keep you on your toes. There wasn't a moment that I felt bored with the story.
If you want an exciting and layered story where the romance finally kicks off 300 pages in, I highly recommend this book.
Okay honestly am super prized by how much I loved this book. The writing was FANTASTIC, like probably the best fantasy writing I’ve read. I was I confused a LOT of the time? Absolutely. But it honestly added to the experience and was probably my own comprehension lacking rather than the author’s explanations lmao. I wish the second book was out now UGH I can’t wait to read it!
I'm not going to lie, I was confused for A LOT of this book. And it had a slow start. But despite that, it was a great book - beautifully written, a complex world, an engaging plot, and compelling characters. Oh, and I can't help but mention, what a beautiful cover! I'm very curious to see where the story goes from here.
Light Locked delivers exactly the kind of tension-driven, slow-burn fantasy romance you love. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic is sharp and charged, with every interaction layered in desire, distrust, and emotional push-pull. The fantasy world is immersive, adding danger and intrigue that heighten the stakes and make every moment between the leads feel electric.
The pacing is deliberate, letting the tension simmer perfectly before payoff, and the characters are morally grey enough to keep the story addictive. It’s intense, moody, and deeply satisfying — exactly the kind of fantasy romance that keeps readers hooked.
Overall, it’s a dark, slow-burn fantasy romance done really well — highly recommend for fans of tension-filled, morally grey love stories.
[Noted: I ordered this from Amazon and it’s the first edition]
It feels like a Wattpad Jack Frost fan fiction. I think at times the author wanted to make the characters sound smart but struggled and ended up writing long paragraphs that led little to nowhere. I got to Chapter 22 and decided not to continue.
I understand that this is self-published but I honestly wish the book got picked up by a publishing house since it got solid world building.
The storyline is acceptable, but it confused me at times. Most characters are unremarkable but can be saved if the author focuses on their personalities as much as their appearances. The romance part feels somewhat forced and out of nowhere.
It feels like unrefined work with the way paragraphs are being structured, spelling mistakes, the word choices and the author using ‘electricity’ in the world where they use torches?
I do believe that with the help of professionals, this book can be better than it is. I genuinely want it to do well on the market.
It has the potential to be as great as any mainstream dark romance series.
Love dangerously brewing, a dangerous labyrinth, and an intriguing magic system! Sucked me right in. A real page turner for me. On to book two. I couldn’t put this down.
The main characters were very compelling and the story had big ideas on an interesting world that I would love to know more about.
Unfortunately, I was deeply confused in various parts of the story about continuity or who different characters were, and because of this at times almost didn't finish it out of frustration.
This book was excellent. I began reading it during the holidays when I had limited free time, but despite my busy schedule, I found it so engaging that I couldn't put it down once I had more time. I eagerly anticipate the release of the second book at the end of the month.
A Journey of Balance and Conflict This year, I’ve been exploring the fantasy genre more than ever, and Light Locked by A.K. Chandler turned out to be an unforgettable experience. From the very first page, I was immersed in a world where balance is not just a theme but a lifeline. Clea, a brave Veilin princess, and Ryson, a stoic Kaletik warrior, embark on a perilous mission to destroy the cursed Deadlock Medallion. Their relationship, filled with tension and reluctant trust, kept me hooked. The way the story balanced light and darkness, showing how hope and connection can arise even in the direst situations, left a lasting impression on me.
Immersive World-Building and Relatable Themes One of the things I’ve come to love about fantasy is how vividly it can transport you to another world, and Light Locked excelled at this. Chandler’s detailed descriptions brought the dark forests, ancient kingdoms, and mythical cities like Loda and Virday to life. I felt as though I was walking beside Clea and Ryson through every danger they faced. The story also explored themes that resonated deeply with me—good versus evil, family expectations versus personal dreams, and the courage to forge one’s own path. These elements made the book not just an adventure but also a thoughtful reflection on life.
Memorable Characters and Evolving Relationships Clea and Ryson were characters I won’t soon forget. Clea’s bravery and determination to save humanity inspired me, while Ryson’s gruff yet caring nature added depth to the story. Their dynamic, filled with moments of humor, tension, and growing trust, felt authentic and heartwarming. I especially loved how their bond evolved naturally, with a touch of romance adding warmth amidst the intensity of their journey. This year, as I dive deeper into the fantasy genre, I’ve realized how much I enjoy stories with strong, relatable characters like these.
A Thrilling Start to a New Genre Reading Light Locked reinforced how much I’m enjoying my foray into fantasy books this year. The fast-paced action, unexpected twists, and emotional depth kept me glued to the pages. But what truly made this book special was how it blended thrilling adventure with meaningful themes of trust, balance, and resilience. As I look forward to discovering more books in this genre, I can’t wait to dive into similar stories that transport me to magical worlds and challenge my perspectives. For anyone looking for an engaging fantasy read, I wholeheartedly recommend *Light Locked*.
The beautiful balance of world-building and character-driven narrative was woven into the fabric of this novel so effortlessly. The connection, both good and bad, that forms between Clea and Ryson is both tense and engaging, exploring the balance that darkness and light need with one another and the emotional toll a journey of life and death can take on two individuals who face so much hardship together. The action and suspense that unfolds throughout this story will keep readers invested as the story progresses.
The heart of this story was in the original mythos the author brings to life on the page and the relatable themes the tale plays with. The world within this dark forest, as well as the human settlements and kingdoms remaining, offer an often bleak and yet tinged hopeful outlook on the history of this realm, and the creatures the author brings to life allow the reader to feel fully immersed in this story. The way the author plays with themes like good versus evil and the expectations of family versus our desires for life will resonate with many readers.
The Verdict
Thoughtful, entertaining, and heart-pounding author A.K. Chandler’s “Light Locked” is a must-read fantasy novel and a great start to a new series. The twists and turns in the story and the shocking revelations that Clea endures at the end of this story will stay with readers long after that final chapter closes.
This book taps into our deep need for balance and connection. From the first page, it’s clear this is more than just a story—it’s a journey. The author immerses us in a world of survival, hope, and the challenges of trust. It’s not simply a tale of light and darkness, but a reflection on the emotions that shape us, the decisions that define us, and the courage it takes to trust in an unpredictable world.
What makes this book truly special is the way it inspires readers to examine the connections we make, the challenges we face, and how, even in the darkest times, light can still lead us forward. It’s a captivating story, reminding us of the strength we all carry within.
I couldn’t put it down—I devoured it in four days, spending hours at the park completely engrossed in the journey! P.s, Prince is my favorite character :)
I liked the characters and I liked the premise of the story. The magic and the world were unique and have a lot of potential even if it starts out pretty slow. The writing itself I found a bit disjointed. It wasn’t quite as descriptive about the pieces/information that I think would have enhanced the story and cleared up some of the more confusing aspects of the plot. When there was conflict it was a bit like an action jump scare and then immediately hopped to a new thought. The ending was a bit weird and didn’t feel like it hit a cliff hanger or a natural cut off. With some edits I think it could be a really great start to a duology or short series though. 3.5 stars
I think I heard about this book on a random TikTok and I wish more people knew about it. The cover is gorgeous! Great world of dark/light. I feel like there will be a lot more to explore in the next book. The gist of the story is: Clea and Ryson basically have to team up to get her back home to destroy a dark medallion. Princess Clea is a healer and Ryson’s people notoriously hate her people. They get in trouble along the way because dark forces are drawn to Clea, and they end up saving each other, creating a bond between them. Lots of things that need to be clarified in the next book, especially everything with Ryson.
This book does a great job of balancing richness / depth with a lighter, humorous vibe that carries you along (doesn't feel cumbersome? If that makes sense?). I felt like the right elements were cherry-picked to effortlessly paint the picture of the "scene" - reminds me of gesture drawings. I love the "evilness" of Ryson and how the main heroine is solidly balanced with everyone else - with her own strengths and weaknesses.
I love this vibe of fantasy, but also get so bored of tropes in a lot of the books I find; this felt unique and unexpected. Atypical. Highly recommend :)

She has a medallion which could destroy the last three human cities and she need to return home. She will need help and she accepts his help but she is not sure about him. Their journey to her home is not going to be easy for either of them but the medallion needs to be destroyed. See how they get on their journey I received an advance copy from hidden gems and I was quickly pulled in and kept there as I wanted to see how they get on
