Beyond – Series Bundle by Maureen A. Miller
3 Stars
Beyond:
While out walking her dog, Aimee was kidnapped by aliens and found herself on board a space ship with various characters from different Planets. She soon became attached to Zak, who had also been picked up from his own planet some years before, after it had been under attack and the rest of his race had been killed.
This story sets up the scene for the series and introduces the characters to us. I quite enjoyed it, I was invested enough to want to know what happened next even though ‘alien’ stories aren’t really my genre of choice. I thought it was sweet that Amiee became attached to Zak and I enjoyed the banter she shared with JOH, the friendly little ‘non’ computer.
Aimee’s adventures last for five Earth years after which she is returned home to grow as a human and decide if she wants to stay home or return to Zak.
Two Suns:
After being home for five years Aimee decides she still wants to be with Zak and waits at the spot, on the date arranged, for him to pick her up! He is late and Aimee begins to worry that he no longer wants her. When finally she feels the sensation of being ‘beamed up’, she begins to relax until she realises it isn’t Zak but the crew that have taken her back to the Guardian Ship.
She soon learns Zak was lost while on a mission to find survivors on his planet and after a search they had had to give up looking for him. Not satisfied with leaving him out there alone Aimee uses her skills as an engineer to enable a ship to take her and a small crew to search for him.
I didn’t enjoy this part as much as the first instalment, mainly because the story became farfetched and didn’t hold my interest. Why would it take a young woman from earth to be able to travel around space and find him? These lives from other planets have way advanced intelligence so it irritated me that it was a human who came to save the day.
Three Paths:
It’s five years on and Aimee returns to earth, this time with a couple of extra’s. The landing in the lake is unexpected but luckily ‘reduced oxygen requirement’ is a perk gained in outer space so all survive their impromptu dive. Aimee is surprised to see the changes that have taken place in the area, not only have her parent’s moved but their old neighbours seem to have changed their occupation and now Aimee, Raja and Zak are in danger.
This is a very fast paced, adventure filled series, Aimee’s life goes from one drama to another without much down time to catch your breath. The adventures between each book are varied and keep the story moving on, though I did find it difficult to imagine Aimee growing any older than the seventeen years she was in book one even though as a whole the story spans over fifteen years. The romance between Zak and Aimee was sweet and the read is suitable for teens and over who enjoy all things Sci-Fi.
