A wholesome, queer, complex, and overall incredibly comforting novel about sapphic love and trying new things. I really enjoyed this book for its comedy, incredible characters, beautiful dialogue and well developed protagonist perspective, but most of all, it’s happy ending!!
I’m so glad I stumbled across this book and I will be recommending this novel to all I know!
If you’re looking for a lighthearted easy read with a happy ending, then this is definitely the book for you. If you’re looking for a book that explores more, then it definitely isn’t.
Pros: as above. Large emu a lighthearted easy read. Good lgbt+ representation. Various relationship types throughout.
Cons: felt like multiple books trying to be one with too many pages dedicated to some aspects and not enough to others. Is it a sort of coming of age story? An LGBT romance (albeit only in the last few chapters really)? A story of friends navigating life together and major personal changes? The story could have easily contained all three however, the grand majority of the words were dedicated to “ray this ray that”. It is absolutely constant. I understand the author is trying to portray the seemingly unrequited love narrative but the main character can’t go a paragraph most of the time without mentioning her crush to the point it’s borderline obsessive. As such 80% of the book is her thinking about her crush and doing literally nothing about it (until maybe 50 pages left and even then, the confession is questionable at best and the gaps have to be filled in for the crush by a side character in scenes we don’t get to see). The other 20% seems to be random add ins that were amazing ideas and could have been applied so much better. For example, we are supposed to believe that four friends buy a house with MAJOR renovation issues and these issues and their costliness are barely mentioned and tossed to the side as “whatever we will work it out” and in a story about people finding themselves in adult life, that’s simply not reality and also misses an opportunity for amazing character development in a book that is supposed to have character development as it’s PRIMARY FOCUS. It would have been much more interesting to have the initial agreement that the main characters as friends would agree to “wild things” to help El come out of her shell a bit and that includes buying the house. Then unpacking all the financial and logistical stress that would put on all the characters, how they navigate that as a group. That plus the “wild things” (which is El doing maybe 1.5 actual wild things the entire book. The rest could be considered mildly exciting at best, like small tattoo and karaoke) could have easily transitioned into El and Ray realizing their feelings together over the time of the whole book. Especially with the amazing relationship comparisons we get in the book that also aren’t fully explored. One of these is Rob and Polly. What happened there? Seemingly perfect marriage turns suddenly into major relationship problems out of nowhere and a whole chapter could have been dedicated then to El restructuring in her mind what a long healthy relationship actually takes. Instead we get the obsession I mentioned above, then a sort of love confession, then a random make out session and suddenly a couple in a relationship in the closing pages with no real exploration of Ray’s side of the story besides a few “yeah I guess I maybe had a crush on you too”
I would still recommend this book to someone who wants a nice chill read with a happy ending and a fun story about leaving the city behind and discovering some important things about life. But if you want in-depth character building then it disappoints there. Which is unfortunate given it’s the whole point of the main character’s story

A great read! Felt a bit like a binge watch in that i couldn't put it down and was easy to read and enjoy! it also kept me off my phone, so maybe better than a binge watch?! Slightly predictable, but not in a bad way. A great read for any time of year. Here's to making your own rules and being your own type of wild!
Unfortunately I went into this book with the wrong expectations, I was expecting a room-com but, to me, the book read more like general fiction. I also didn’t feel very connected to any of the characters. 3.5 stars.
