The Warlock #1

The Warlock 1

Rate this book
Demons are real. The supernatural is real. Magic is real. One man can become the master of all.

Wes is working the hotel lobby the night his life changes forever. Called to the top floor to deal with rowdy patrons, he finds himself in a high stakes poker game alongside a beautiful woman who is, apparently, a demoness. To make the night crazier, the game ends with a startling revelation: Wes is a Warlock.

Wes can bind demons to his will and command the infernal elements.

With his newfound powers, Wes will have no shortage of new hellish friends, but his enemies are almost equal in number. Among them are the famed Knights Templar, who have a keen interest in Earth's latest Warlock.

Armed with the staff of Solomon the First Warlock and surrounded by demonesses under his power, Wes aims not to be yet another dead member of the quickly diminishing Warlock population.

I stumbled upon this book while searching for something to read on the Kindle store. At the time, it was a top seller under Dark Fantasy and the idea of male-aimed erotica, amongst a sea of smut, was enough to pique my interest.

I made it passed the first sexual encounter and stopped. I detest reviews of books that DNF, but this is erotica, it's like telling a joke where everybody knows the punchline already. If the punchline isn't funny, I'm not staying around to hear the rest of the joke.

The book is blatant power fantasy and comes across like an incel writing his wannabe-chad life. I had no reason to be interested in the first lover outside of the authors continuous reminders, through the MC's perspective, that she was "hot". Mankind has been writing erotica for millenia and the female body is such a bountiful muse, yet the author decides to describe the first lover's attractiveness by how others would perceive the MC walking with her. It's all a cringe worthy ego trip.

A heart rate of 60ish BPM (aren't smart watches great?) confirmed my complete disinterest in the first erotic entanglement. I doubt any of the later scenes would be better or devoid of the MC's jarring, fratboy-like mental meanderings.

This fails on multiple levels.

The magic is just weak and uncertain. The demon and templar conflict seemed fun, but the lackluster execution was disappointing. The story itself was forced and boring. Once again, this is a fun idea poorly written.

I'll read things like this periodically (high-output harem authors) because the occasional gem sneaks in, but this wasn't one of them. It gets three stars since I finished it (sort of; I skimmed a lot) and it is pretty much what one would expect.

The average guy who turns into a dominant arsehole with women "because they like it" rubs me the wrong way. Yes, some people are into that, but when the MC discovers his new powers and gets off on being called "master" I can't bring myself to care too much what happens to him.

I hate that I'm going to keep reading this series.

I'm not gonna sugar coat it, this book is bad. The characterization is inconsistent, the messaging is inconsistent, the plot development is amateurish and the writing is equally bad. The magic system has some potential, but the world building is fractured and sloppy. I have nothing against adolescent wish fulfillment, some of my favorite novels are nothing but, but this is so thinly veiled and there's just nothing to add on to it to make it an enjoyable read.
Literally the only thing this book has going for it is that the sex is really hot, but even that has problematic parts to it, not to mention even more inconsistency. Look, if you're gonna do something, just run with it.

A fun urban fantasy story

The story has some interesting twists and turns a little bit different than the usual but some is same elements. Thermostat a lot of personality development in the story as a progressed tell us a little bit more about the world in the story that's similar to ours but very different. To twists and turns that keep you guessing and our main character is definitely not perfect and yet he's not a dweeb. And the spicy scenes are written well. The more I learn about this new story world the more intriguing it is and I can't wait to read what happens next.

Fantastic start!

An amazing and truely fantastic start to what I expect to be an action packed, fun filled and antics galore series.

From learning about a hidden secret World to becoming a member of it in one long night.
To fighting enemies heaven bent on your destruction and mad monsters from nightmares trying to end the known world...

This series has it all, and gives you the stakes of the game right off the bat.

Looking forward for more!

okay

The book was okay, but not his best work. truly the MC had a troubled background. But to be fare, I like a read where the story builds as this one did, however to much rough sex. the women were treated with no respect. From the start they were mistreated. Made the MC appear as a bastard. Not sure if I will read the next book in the series. I have come to expect better Freon this author.

Balance of White and Black

Sometimes the real version of is twisted by the those who won. You see it everywhere in time, the past, the present but the future follows present. This is a good start but which road will future take?

How life changes

Wes our hero, well he may be in time. Finds a card game, A beautiful woman, and an enemy. And then the fun really begins, join Wes, Hazel, and Deja for an epic ride in and of the bedroom. Just don't mention Aladdin around Deja...

Good fun read.

Enjoyed this regular fair. Simple story but fast read and decent characters move the story. Bit simple and no real surprises, but kept your interest if you enjoy Kings other books.

Ah, magical harems with more emphasis on harems

I was quite surprised it turned into a harem book and MC barely survives with the head beneath the waist rather than thinking with the head above it. Entertaining to read but it wasn’t a gripping story. Just had to finish it though.

Good beginning

This is a good beginning to a series that should have lots of twists and turns coming up. So far Wes has survived and learned quickly. Hopefully he will continue to do so.

A new journey

First of all, if you don't know what you're getting into with Dante King, his books are well written, with humor and adventure and sex and harems.

That out of the way, this is an excellent introduction to a new series, where like many other urban fantasy stories, the world is basically modern day but with a hidden supernatural world. Our protagonist is thrust into this world pretty much immediately, and has some typical fish out of water events before settling in and deeper conflicts emerging.

This was a fun read, and I like the world building here. Well worth your time.
