Soucouyant: A Gothic Romance

Rate this book
Adrian

For centuries, Adrian never cared whom he killed to feed his hunger. When the love of his life was taken from him, he gave up hope after he believed the ritual to bring her back failed. Lost to his grief and bloodlust, fearing he would never see her again, he intentionally sought out victims who reminded him of her, Aroa. That is, until she calls out to him nine hundred years later, new and reborn. The only she has no memories of the life and devotion stolen from them.

Adrian’s willing to do whatever it takes to see her again, to taste her, to touch her, but he must first prove he is worthy of being her one true love again. And more important, he must keep her hidden from the King of the Fallen Ones.

Karmin

When Karmin was growing up, her nana filled her with stories of Caribbean folklore and superstition, but Karmin never believed in any of it. Not even when an alluring darkness with a deep and familiar voice calls out to her in her dreams. After Nana’s funeral, that belief is challenged when a stranger enters Karmin’s life, yet she feels like she’s seen him before. Could this be the man calling out to her? The man her soul seems to already know? Or has something darker attached itself to her?

Unexplained encounters, spiritual warnings, and an unbreakable connection indicate Adrian is more than he seems. A dark angel sent to punish her for what she has done, or redeem her?

She should run from him, sparing her sanity and soul, but she’s ready to follow her heart, which may lead to anguish…or even retribution.

thank you so much delani for giving me the opportunity to arc read your debut !! this was such a beautiful and tearful read 🖤 i love myself a good vampire romance and this certainly delivered !!

if you’re a fan of vampire romances, past lovers, reincarnation, castle, “the invitation” movie vibes, a down bad possessive and unhinged mmc, smart and curious fmc, vampire x mortal, secrets, spirits, psychological twists, gothic vibes … this is definitely for you !!

when adrian lost the love of his life aroa, because of his father all those years ago, he is hellbent on finding anyone who resembled aroa’s features just to spend one night with them. he lost himself in the process and became a force to be reckoned with. he is ruthless. he is unhinged. when one night he felt a pull that led him to karmin. he saw that she is his long lost lover’s reincarnation and did everything he just had to have her. he begins to stalk her for a couple years and learns everything he can about her. although there were some differences in karmin, he knew it was aroa and he will stop at nothing to let her memories seep in.

when karmin first met adrian, she felt something unexplainable pulling her towards him. she didn’t know what to make of it. even after all those years have passed, she still couldn’t get the man behind the mask off her mind. when she was given the opportunity to do research about her family at his castle, of course she jumped at the chance ! who wouldn’t ? she begins to dig deeper into where her family came from. one night, she finds out about who and what adrian really is yet she still believes he is not the monster people say he is. she sees the good in him. she’s sees it in the way he treats her.

the last couple of chapters absolutely had me in a chokehold !! i was crying so much i just wanted to be with adrian and karmin forever 🥹🖤

Delani Monroe did excellent work for this novel, and I was blessed to receive it as an ARC. Soucouyant is a romantasy novel that encompasses vampires and kingdoms. It didn’t leave me feeling like I was truly missing anything, even if I wanted more conversation between Adrian and Karmin. I’d like to hear how his passion has developed for Karmin herself, rather than Aroa. Otherwise, this book was wonderful and I felt it left enough open for a second novel 😊 can’t wait to see what is to come! It didn’t have an overwhelming amount of anything that it encompasses: romance, mystery, spice, fighting… overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5. It wasn’t predictable either! I felt like elements were to be expected, of course, but it had enough surprise to leave me satisfied 😊

I was happy to have the pleasure to get an advance copy of this book. I finished this book in three days and I greatly enjoyed this book, so much. The relationship between Adrian and Karmin, their undying love was unmatched. I was so engrossed into the story, I felt like I was there. I am a sucker for vampire/gothic romance and this book didn't disappoint. I love the cultural and history aspect of it, the vampire movie references, and so on. With the cultural aspect, I love the fact that the book was so diverse and also the representation of color because a lot of times people of color aren't written as vampire, witches, and werewolves. I am definitely adding this book to my favorites. I will not forget about this book.

I loved this book! It was my first vampire romance (lol after reading the Twilight series over 12 years ago, I know), and THIS is what I needed to get back in. The notes of culture were chefs kiss, we love a Nana and her stories. I loved the characters, especially Karmin, Adrian and Lily. I loved the plot twist later in the book (y’all will see) and the epilogue. If you’re into Caribbean folklore, vampires and a man who would do absolutely anything for you, this is the book you’re looking for. Thank you for letting me be an ARC reader. 🖤

(TINY SPOILER BELOW)

I lowkey want a story about Dracula and his true love and the Dragon Brides!

Also, Myah’s reaction to Karmin at the end would’ve been my reaction. Love her!

3.5 stars.

The story and world building was really interesting. I really love that someone wrote a gothic romance that had a black FMC.

The FMC and MMC fit well together but I do wish more effort had been put into showing their bond develop. There has to be more on the page holding these two together than thinking about memories with the past iteration of the FMC and physical attraction to show why these two love each other.

This story is majorly lacking on the spice too. The spicy scenes were mediocre and short and there were too few of them. Vampires ooze sex appeal....sucking, biting, taking someone's essence into yourself; that's highly sexual. The smut has to be there and it wasn't in this book.

The ending and epilogue was satisfying.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 3.5-Star Book Review: *Soucouyant* by Delani Monroe

I was honored to received an ARC from the Author.

What I Loved:
♥️ The romance in *Soucouyant* had a warm, cozy feel, reminiscent of a story set in a grand castle. **Karmin** was a beautifully written character whose growth from insecurity to standing in her own power was relatable and touching. **Adrian** showed great emotional maturity, accepting the consequences of his actions and demonstrating real character development. Their love story was engaging, and there was a lot of creativity in the characters that kept me invested. 🔥

What Could Have Been Better:
🌸 While the relationship between Karmin and Adrian was lovely, I would have enjoyed spending more time getting to know both characters on a deeper level. Seeing them gradually fall back in love, with more emotional buildup, would have added more tension to the story. **Adrian** was interesting but could have benefited from more complexity as a vampire—something that would make him feel more dynamic and give readers a reason to be drawn to him, beyond his relationship with Karmin.

For **Karmin**, I would have loved to see more of her in her element, perhaps making an archeological discovery, which would help showcase her passions and give us more connection to her beyond the romance.

The villain was an interesting choice, but I would have loved to see a more original antagonist, especially on an island setting that could have opened the door to creative world-building. There was so much potential for unique vampire lore or covens, and exploring that further could have added even more intrigue to the plot.

Lastly, as someone familiar with the traditional **Soucouyant** lore, the use of the term felt a bit misleading, as the Soucouyant in this story felt more like a typical vampire. More exploration of Trinidadian culture and lore would have enriched the narrative and brought the setting to life.

Overall:
🌹Despite these areas, I enjoyed the read and would rate it 3.5 stars. I’m curious to see how the author might continue to develop this world in a sequel, and would be interested in following Karmin and Adrian’s journey as they grow further. I will be drawing fanart still because they are a lovely couple and the author still did a great job.

Thank you so much Delani Monroe for giving me the chance to read and review your book!

I was drawn to this book immediately because of the cover. Yes, yes, I know we aren’t supposed to judge a book by its cover, but come on…it’s just so pretty!

And then I read the description, and holy whoa, I was hooked.

I completely adored this book. The culture was new to me. I’ve watched some things that had Caribbean influence, but this was my first time reading about it and it was one of my favorite parts. The folklore was so interesting, and I really enjoyed the vampire theme coming from a different aspect than one I’m used to. “Soucouyant” is a term I’d never heard before, but it’s not one I’ll soon forget!

bullet points

* I enjoyed the look into just how monstrous Adrian had become. Don’t get me wrong, it was awful, but I also felt like it was incredibly important to understanding the character.
* Some of the vibes from this book reminded me so much of The Invitation on Netflix, but with a much more satisfying plot line, lol. (Also, that’s definitely a great movie, I highly recommend it. Just don’t expect a happy romance lol)
* I liked Karmin a lot. I thought the author did a good job of writing a strong character who still showed a sufficient amount of vulnerability without tipping the scale too far one way or the other.
* I loved the second chance at love story line here. It was so romantic!

This book has really reinvigorated my love of vampires. I truly enjoyed the entire concept, the characters, the atmosphere, a look at a different culture, everything. I feel extremely fortunate to have read an ARC of this author’s debut; I think there will be plenty more wonderful things to come from her!

This book is absolutely perfect for this time of year and I highly recommend it! As always, if you’ve read or plan on reading this book, please come back to the comments and let me know your thoughts!

After losing her grandmother Karmin embarks on a once in a lifetime opportunity and soon thinks that she is being convinced to join a cult. No matter what anyone told her, you couldn’t convince her this wasn’t a weird cult initiation and I can’t blame her. 😂 Adrain has lived many lives waiting for his love to return, when she finally does he’s determined to be a better man for her. No matter the decisions he made you never questioned his love for Karmin!

The overwhelming emotions that I felt throughout this book, left me staring at a wall after I finished it. The setting of this book gave me haunted mansion 2003 vibes along with Queen of the Dammed staring Karmin. The Caribbean folklore also kept reminding of skeleton key. (Don’t ask why I’m that movie creeps me out. Probably the bayou & voodoo 😅) It has been along time since I’ve read and really enjoyed a vampire romance but I’m glad I found this one! You could see the connection between the two characters from the beginning. So close to coming together but so far from it. The quotes at the ending of each chapter added to the feel of the book, and helped set the tone. Here are two of my favorites:

“For those of us existing within grief, our loved ones shall remain present until things get a little easier without them. Only then can they be let free.”

“Even when my heart no longer beats, even if it’s all broken on my final breath, every piece will forever belong to you.”

I received this book as ARC, and I cannot thank Delani enough for letting me read it! If you are looking for something to kick off spook season this is perfect!

I love me a good vampire romance, what makes this book outstanding is the influence of the Caribbean folklore. I am a sucker for everything folklore and when its intertwined in new books and Delani did such an amazing job.

“Even when my heart not longer beats, even if it’s all broken on my final breath, every piece will forever belong to you.”

Soucouyant is an Gothic vampire romantasy debut novel. That follows the tale of Aidrian and Karmin. After losing his one true love Aidrian did everything he could to find his love again. I don’t want to tell to much about the plot because this is the type of epic love story you will love the most if not everything is known before reading. But if you loved The Vampire Dairies, The Originals and/or Dracula, then you will love this book to pieces I promise you.

And after picking this book up, I couldn’t lay it down. The writing style of Delani is amazing, it’s intense and heartbreakingly beautiful. The characters are written in a way that you get the feeling you know them and you bond with them. The romance is this book is so beautiful and I cried the ugly kind of tears. Sometimes people ask what is a book that you wish you could read for the first time again? Now I can say Soucouyant, I know for sure this isn’t the only time I read this book, I will read this book again, because it was that good!

I loved this book!!! Delani Monroe did an amazing job with her gothic romance Inspired by The Invitation with a Caribbean folklore twist! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🩸♥️🩸♥️🩸♥️🩸♥️🩸

This book had everything! Drama! Romance! Vampires! Love that last forever!

I adored the passion between Adrian and Karmin. They have such an intense connection, drawn to each other. Seeing them fall in love and getting to know each other was beautiful! The story gets darker as more is revealed about Adrian and his past. He is a true mortally gray love interest but I loved reading his story arc and his journey to be the type of man Karmin deserves.

The only issue she has no memories of the life and devotion stolen from them.

Adrian’s willing to do whatever it takes to see her again, to taste her, to touch her, but he must first prove he is worthy of being her one true love again. And more importantly, he must keep her hidden from the King of the Fallen Ones.

Highly recommend this gothic romance!

As always, I’d like to thank the author for trusting me with an advanced copy of this work. Your generosity and kindness are appreciated.

Are you a fan of gothic vibes? How about vampire romance, tales of reincarnated lovers, or a Dracula retelling with a Caribbean twist? If any of these sound like your kind of read, DO NOT SLEEP on this one. 😮‍💨

The way I devoured (wink, wink) this book was unreal. I loved the characters and just did NOT want to stop. Karmin’s strength of character and sassy personality had me hooked from the start. Not to mention Adrian’s devotion and obsession with being reunited with his tragically murdered soul mate of centuries past. From there, this story unwound faster and faster until the haunting spins finally revealed the king’s sinister plot that had been seeping through the entire tale. My favorite part was definitely Karmin stepping into her power and purpose with unwavering bravery and poise. (A close second was the ending, though. I got so choked up at seeing such a beautiful twist of fate!) This instantly became a spooky season reread to be enjoyed every fall, like the delicacy it is.

Vampires, reincarnation, mysteries and a brooding prince; what else could you ask for?
The vibes did remind me of the movies The Invitation (2022) and Van Helsing (2004) but infinitely better. In particular the settings, I couldn't help but picture as well as the moody ambiance fit this story to a T. This was everything that I wanted from those but didn't get. And the ending is what I desperately needed.
Adrian is somewhat of a reformed bad guy. But his love for Karmin after all this time is undeniable; the lengths he's willing to go to keep her is swoon worthy. He still has some highly questionable impulse control issues though.
Karmin has had a rough go of it, from her Gran's death and strange occurrences she's a little cautious to take Adrian up on his genealogy project. Even if this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity holds all the keys to her past.
The gothic feel really comes through with the characters and settings making for a great spooky season read filled with lost love, bloodshed, and mysterious secrets.

What an absolute feast of a book! I devoured it within a day. From the very first chapter, I was drawn like a moth to a flame. It was so enticing and not overly theatrical.

"She's mine, and I don't take lightly to those who wish to harm what belongs to me."

Adrian is everything you want and need in a vampire (soucouyant) prince and Karmin is every bit of a beautiful, badass woman. There were humorous bits, especially with her best friend myah, that made me laugh out loud.

"I love you. I would climb a volcano and dive into a sea of magma before ever thinking of harming you."

I've always loved the concept of reincarnation and multiple lives, and this tale fulfilled all of that. The amount of patience and love that Adrian has to wait for Karmin to remember and love him; it's absolutely astonishing and the definition of eternal love.

There were a few spooky aspects that I really liked thrown in there. Nothing freakier than someone's skin melting off of them when you thought it was your lover (iykyk) 🫣

All-in-all, this was a BEAUTIFUL Gothic romance novel, and I'm adding it to my "to read again" shelf. 🖤

Wow, what a beautifully haunting tale!

This story follows Adrian and Karmin (formerly Valentine and Aroa), whose love has endured through centuries and death. Hundreds of years ago, Aroa was meant to marry Valentine’s father, but love led them to tragedy, with Aroa killed and Valentine making a devastating deal with the "devil" to become one of the Fallen Ones. Now reincarnated as Karmin, she’s plagued by her grandmother’s spirit, dark entities, and memories of her past life with Adrian.

Delani Monroe weaves a dark, gothic world filled with intrigue, love, and sacrifice. It’s a story where true love literally transcends time.

The ending is absolutely satisfying and beautiful! If you love gothic romance, this one is for you! 💀💖

One of The Best Gothic Romances I’ve Read in a Long Time!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. I was hooked from Chapter One! Adrian and Karmin had so much chemistry, it kept off the page! I loved the folklore, inclusion of culture, and the epic romance present in their story!

What I loved most was that it wasn’t a “fluffy” vampire romance. The ones where vampires are perceived as these perfect “vegetarians” who try to be something they aren’t and fight their basic instincts. These vampires kill. With this in mind, be sure to read the trigger warnings before diving in. The violence is plentiful but in my opinion, it makes for a completely realistic vampire read!

I haven’t enjoyed a vampire romance this much in a long time. I hope to see more from Ms. Monroe!

This book is one of my top picks of my best reads so far this year!

10/10 Recommend!

Happy reading!

I have had the ARC for this book for way too long before I finally got to reading it. It is embarrassing.

I am glad that I read it.

I do love gothic romances.

While the book was good, I wish it had been better. The beginning felt too long. It didn't drag, but it felt like it took longer than necessary for the action to start happening with the creepy things happening.

Also there was one issue I had with the romance. The FMC changed her mind really quickly about the MMC and it didn't feel believable. I didn't feel like she'd really been convinced when she did change her mind. That maybe she just needed to change her mind for the plot to work, so she did. But it didn't feel as realistic.

But I really loved the double love story in this book that turned into a triple love story. That caught me off guard and I loved every single second. I almost wish we could've seen more about that. Idk, maybe like snippets from the past and this other love story. It was really fun and I ate it up.

I did like the gothic atmosphere though and the creepiness of the shadow figure was spot on and really had me going. I kept changing me mind on if it was who I thought or not, for a while there.

This book is worth a read.

I’m an emotional mess over this book. The author did an amazing job with the world building. While reading, it was like I was right there with the characters. I felt every emotion the characters experienced; I laughed when they did, cried when they did, and raged when they did. The amount of unconditional love that is displayed in Soucouyant was just…ugh…chefs kiss! The author has definitely raised my standards in men. If he doesn’t love me like Valentine loves Aroa…I don’t want it! The FMC and her growth is inspiring. The things people do for love, you know. I could say so much more about this book but all of my thoughts include spoilers and I don’t want to do that to you guys! You need to read this book!

I was very excited to receive Soucouyant as an advanced reader copy, the story involves another cultural depiction of vampires. I love getting a look at common myths from an alternate viewpoint and I had never heard of a “soucouyant” before. I loved the gothic feel of the story, I kept picturing the movie “Queen of the Damned.” The love story of Karmin and Adrian is beautifully told, it shows that love conquers all. I also enjoyed the side characters of Enzo, Lilly, and Myah, they all played their part perfectly. Delani Monroe blended the lore and history of vampires seamlessly while adding her own creative twist! I will be recommending Soucouyant to those looking for a spin on a classic vampire love story!

Even after reading (and enjoying) a bunch of vampire romances, this one continues to be my favorite. Our MMC Adrian is clouded in mystery, and through his POV we find out that our FMC is more of an enigma than we could've imagined. When Karmin struggles to pick up the pieces after her Nana's death, Adrian is there to swoop in to reclaim his lost love. I adored Karmin and found it easy to root for her. She was so relatable, funny, and intelligent. It was fantastic to see her come into her power! And Adrian's obsession with Karmin made my knees weak! He had the perfect balance of scary badass vampire with a sweet side only for Karmin! This story stuck with me and Delani is a FOR SURE autobuy author for anyone who loves a great gothic romance.

Arc Reader!!

Thank you so much Delani for allowing me to read this! I loved it!!

Karmin has recently lost the last of her family and is approached by a mysterious gentleman, Adrian, with a business opportunity she can’t turn down. She can’t help but feel a draw to him and sense a familiarity with him.

Adrian has lived for centuries in agony over the loss of his beloved, Aroa. He searches for women resembling her to fill the void until one day there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. After so much time without her, she visits him in his dreams in a classroom with an old friend.

This story was beautiful and it kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how it would end whether it be in tragedy and heartbreak or a happily ever after. I’m a hopeless romantic so the thought of loving each other throughout multiple lifetimes and always finding your other half is the best in the world.

Also not going to lie there were multiple times reading this I had to turn my lights on so definitely spooky vibes going on. 😅🤣

It was such a well rounded book from great writing style and pace was spot on! I had the hardest time putting it down and was actively dodging all my responsibilities!

Soucouyant is a dark, emotional story of eternal love and sacrifice. I absolutely loved this book. As someone who grew up loving all things vampire and supernatural, this gave me everything I needed and didn’t know I needed.

Unlike most vampire stories that wrestle with morality or the need to stay human, this one takes a different approach, and honestly, after being human this long, I’d happily give it up (just kidding… sort of).

Some twists I saw coming, and that made me enjoy the story even more. Others caught me completely off guard in the best way. There is spice, and it's good and appropriate for the story.

If you’re craving a vampire romance full of longing, deep love, unexpected turns, and rich cultural roots, I highly recommend Soucouyant: A Gothic Romance.

I love vampires and this book was so so good! I love the different takes on vampire lore that were brought into this book.✨

Adrien is so dreamy and Karmin is such a cool and unique female main character.🥹

I loved all the creepy gothic vibes. It was giving all the gothic castle vampire movie feels. I also loved that some of the famous vampire lore characters are intertwined into the story.🩸

I wish there was a little more spice, but the spice that was there was so good! It never felt out of place or forced. 🤭

If you’re a vampire lore girly, you need to read this book! It is such a unique story!‼️

The storytelling is vivid, making you feel every twist and turn.
The blend of supernatural elements, psychological depth, and gothic vibes gives Soucouyant a unique edge. And let’s not forget the representation!

It’s refreshing to see people of color portrayed as vampires.

If you’re into reincarnation, dark angels, and a romance that’s both haunting and passionate, Soucouyant is for you.

It’s like living inside a modern gothic fairy tale with a diverse and richly detailed world.

So very, very satisfying - Read It!!!!

This book? It's like a liquid. Smooth. Hot. Icy. Tantalizing and I am not just talking about the spicy scenes (there could have been more. tbf, there's a LOT of story, though). I'm talking JUSTICE. So, soooooooo very satisfying. And Dracula's humor was hilarious. I loved how she wrote him.

This book's got everything. Rich plot. Intriguing, layered characters. Beautiful world building. Spice! Yummy spice. Best of all, delicious revenge.

Ah, it was a true delight. I loved it. Please write more. And fast.

If you’re wanting a new take on Dracula, this is the book for you. After Adrian is convinced he has found his long lost love, now known as Karmin, he is so excited to invite her to his home. Through visions and nightmares, she brings placing together pieces of the puzzle of their life together, and the tragedy that was once their love story.

I really loved Adrian and Karmen, the way their relationship develops (or rather, is reborn) is really beautiful to see. Some creepy, gory scenes, and some 🌶, romantic scenes. A very fun story to read overall ❤️

This is a dark, gothic romance with a spin on vampires. And so good! This should definitely be your next October read! It's spooky, it's dark, it's perfect for Halloween! It's not for the faint of heart- there were a few times where I felt the need to take a tiny break to process what was happening- which is just a testament to Delani Monroe's talent on writing unsettling scenes and how it made me feel as if I was in the world!

There were ZERO plot holes, amazing world building, wonderful development of the characters as individuals & in their relationships. I could really feel the love & devotion that Karmin & Adrain had for each other- it was written so beautifully.

While I was reading, I felt a bit of a hint of the show "the Originals", so if that's a show you like- then this book would be perfect for you!
