I usually love Oswald’s stuff, and while this book intrigued me for the most part, I found it rather dull in the end.
The ‘big reveal’ wasn’t very interesting, nor was it delivered with the finesse I’ve come to expect from Oswald’s books. You could see it coming a mile off, and I can’t help but feel it fell a little flat.
I also found it difficult to get on board with the idea Phoebe was supposed to be 12 in 1985, and I think Oswald would’ve been better served writing her as a few years older to make her actions, thoughts and everything she said a little more believable.
That being said, it was an easy book to read, and I did enjoy the premise of the magical forest.
All in all, not my favourite book from one of my favourite authors, but you can’t win them all!
Absolutely loved this book from the start until the end. Already it goes into my top 10 all time books. Just the way it is written, the characters and the landscape all contribute to a beautifully written story of love, loss and finding yourself in a world which is changed by nothing you have done.
loved it! I came to this author through his J D Oswald Sir Benfro books & although I've also devoured his James Oswald crime ( with spookiness) novels I was very happy to be back in Wales in a valley full of ghosts & very special people.
