The Storyteller from Balincia : Book One of the Driftstone Series

Rate this book
What if there was more to the world than you knew? What if magic truly existed? How far would you go to uncover the truth?
If one were to ask a Balincian about the origin of their land or the construction of their laws, no one would be able to share anything of substance except to acknowledge it always existed.
Admittedly, they also shared no desire to investigate it further.
It was meaningless to question what was—when what is—is all one would ever need to know. Balincians were granted provision and purpose by the twin witches who ruled from the floating isles of Chaos and Order. Majestic mountains and cascading waterfalls surrounded their home; every aspect of their life was idyllic and catered, leaving no one to want. What more did one need?
Curiosity only led to questions. Questions might lead to discomfort, and that might lead to confrontation. Confrontation might upset balance, and balance was everything.
Enter Birk, the witches' nephew and a young Storyteller, whose life turns upside down when a mysterious stranger presents him with a magical book needing an author. As Birk uncovers the shocking truth that the world he knows is a fraction of a far grander reality, he sets out on an epic quest to delve into his aunt's hidden past.
Joined by a new generation of witches, he teams up with Zara, a fearless warrior princess; Grey, a gentle soul with a secret; and Thalon, the arrogant heir of the Elven Witch. Carrying the weight of their ancestors' choices, they race against time to prevent a dark prophecy. Hunted by their evil aunt and her horde of arcanivores, they must avoid the mistakes of their parents in their search for the truth.

Will Birk and his new allies succeed in this high-stakes battle for the future of their world? Or will the cost of truth be higher than they are willing to pay?

A new epic fantasy series crafted for all those who, as children, never found reflections of themselves in the pages of a Fairy Tale.

S.W. Kent builds a fantasy world where diversity is intentional, not forced. Queer, Black, and Female narratives take the lead, defying the stereotypes often assigned to them in the Fantasy genre. This series will undoubtedly hold a special place on your shelf and in your hearts.

“Everyone has a story to share; maybe yours is waiting to reveal itself.”

The Storyteller from Balincia was my most anticipated read of 2025 and it did not disappoint!

A big thank you to S.W Kent for giving me the opportunity to be apart of his advanced reader team and sending this book to me ahead of the release date (March 25).

Let me tell you, this book had me intrigued through every single page. Every time I hade to put the book down and pick it back up I was immediately drawn right back in like I never stopped reading. Every moment I would have a slight thought of like ok can we get back to the action or some important part that is exactly what the next page would give me. The pacing in S.W. Kent's writing is so impressive.

The elements of found family, diverse representation, LGBT themes and romance, and hints at bigger topics that we can connect to the real world all melted together into this story and is truly what has made The Storyteller from Balincia one of a kind epic fantasy.

This story is definitely written to appease any age from 13+. The writing is smooth and easy to follow and the best part is the back of the book has an appendix for readers to turn to for further information about the world building involved in the story and the characters involved.

I loved this book and would give it 1M/10 if I could. It has my heart and all I want to do is spread the love so everyone else can keep this story close to their hearts.

The Storyteller From Balincia.

First and foremost I want to thank S W Kent for the opportunity to arc read this, such an absolutely amazing author and I so humbled by this opportunity. Thank you!!

I have said it since I began this journey, the best word I would use to describe this work of art is Magical.

When I began this journey I became fully immersed in Balincia and all it has to offer; and it stayed through the entirety of the book.

This book is jam packed with equality, fantasy, love, magic, and adventure.

There are a lot of characters you will meet in this book and when I tell you they are all important I mean it BUT it isn’t confusing. I was able to follow the connections right away. With fantasy and world building sometimes it is hard to follow, we know this, with this book it is much different and SO easy to follow and understand.

When I say this book has equality, I mean if you are of the LGBTQ, all races, strong males, females, non binary, big, small, skinny, round. There is someone in this book for everyone. And I mean everyone. I promise you will find someone you align with in this book amidst the adventure and journey.

Hallways of doors leading to other worlds. Magical animals (familiars), witches, dragons, Magic-Born, found families, family not made by blood. There is so much to unpack here and it is worth the ride I promise you this.

I cannot wait until book 2 is out and book one doesn’t even release until the 25th of March! Haha!

Rated for ages 13 and up, there are some romance type scenes that you may be cautious of your 13 year old to read but it doesn’t dive into detail (it really depends on maturity level and knowledge of things your child already knows or doesn’t know).

Definitely a must must MUST read!

Bravo S W Kent, bravo👏🏻🤌🏻🙌🏻

one thing about me is that i love good people. i love people that care about other people and prioritize diversity and equity. s.w. kent is one of the best people i have had the privilege of meeting online. (i understand that this is supposed to be a review of the book-stick with me.) when i first heard him talking about his debut novel i was immediately enthralled. when someone talks about something with so much reverence and love you can't help but want to know more about it.
i was one of the lucky few who got an arc of this book which makes the shame of me just now writing my review all the better.

this story is about birk, a young adult raised by his adoptive aunts, the twin witches of chaos and order in the storied land of balincia. he is the titular storyteller and where our tale begins. birk is given stories by his aunts to tell to the people of balincia as he is the only one permitted to read. after one seemingly inconsequential storytelling he is approached by a cloaked woman who begins to pose questions that birk quickly realizes he doesn't have the answers to. his lack of answers bothers him, but he finds that quandary second to the concern that he never thought to ask these questions himself.
with the help of a magical book and a few friends made along the way birk uncovers the truth of a world he never really knew.

this book will enthrall and enrapture anyone from 13 to 113. the elements of community and found family are resounding throughout and make a story so fantastical feel like a safe space to belong.

if you've read this entire review, coffee's on me, but you have to read the book first so we have something to chat about.

A diverse magical world with heart warming and thought provoking elements that will wrap fantasy readers in its embrace, refusing to let go.

For lovers of young adult fantasy, Balinica and its characters will leave an impact on every reader who decides to journey into its pages in one way or another. Easy to read, and almost poetically written,S.W Kent is a Prime Creator of a magically captivating world full of diversity, adventure and acceptance.

My favorite elements of The Storyteller from Balincia is how inclusive this world is; especially the representation of the LGBTQ+ community. In today’s world, where acceptance and a feeling of belonging is hard to find whether it be based on personality, sexuality or identity, S.W Kent created a safe space for all.

Not only is this book full of fantasy, but it has its very own lore, history and foods that also draws readers in. Something that many fantasy books fall short on. The Storyteller from Balincia has amazing world building, is relatively slow paced but detailed rich to keep readers engaged and features a closed door romance that could be considered “insta-love.”

Without giving too much away, Birk sets out on a quest for answers after being gifted a book of questionable origins. He begins self reflecting on everything his twin aunts ever told him and uncovers world shattering truths and thousand year old secrets. He journeys through a magical door into the unknown world of Driftstone in pursuit of answers; but he gets so much more than he bargains for. Love, found family, friendship and sense of self and purpose. But the ultimate question is, will Birk and his new found friends and family be able to fix what was broken thousands of years ago? And bring the world of Driftstone back into balance, preventing evil and darkness from engulfing it entirely?

This has been one of my most anticipated reads for 2025 and I was not disappointed. I am honored to have been chosen as a ARC reader for S.W Kent. The Storyteller from Balincia is his debut novel, and it has completely left me awestruck; all the warm fuzzy feelings and even tears. If I could give 10,000 ⭐️(you’ll understand the significance once you read it) I would! I was on the edge of my seat throughout every single page, I didn’t want it to end and purposely tried to read slower. I feel this is a great story for readers 13+, and will even help those younger readers expand on empathy, acceptance, individuality/self-identity, self-worth and even broaden the way we think and make choices. If I could choose to forget a book and start it over again for the first time, this would be my choice, every single time.

Actual rating 3.5/5 stars.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I feel conflicted over my review and rating and thoughts for this book.

On the one hand, it's immediate insta-love, slower pacing, and soft fantasy vibes did not combine well for my personal preferences. The romance was so fast it left me feeling almost nothing towards the moments and feelings shared between the couple. That, mixed with the soft fantasy/lower-stakes vibes meant I didn't really get emotionally drawn into the story. Add on the slower pacing, and it had my mind wandering quite often and struggling to remain focused on the story.

BUT. The creativity, acceptance, and wonder stitched into this story were so magnificent. Such vibrant and imaginative world-building really brought the Where of it all to life. The inclusiveness throughout this world was so heart-warming and loving, I couldn't help but wish for more. And this book gave me something I always desperately want more of, and that's queer romances at the forefront of full on fantasy novels. On top of that, this world Kent created is so rich with immaculate lore, it was incredible. It had it's own folktales and festivals and history and foods, and that's what I always want from my fantasy books. I also rrreeaalllly loved the themes it touched on and the discussion of "are you really doing the right thing, keeping people safe, if you're manipulating them and taking away their choices?" There was a lot of philosophical questions that I appreciated being discussed.

All of that being said, I truly think this could be such a wonderful read for those who enjoy a softer fantasy and slower pace, and aren't befuddled by romantic feelings being instantaneous.

✨ A Masterpiece of Magic, Adventure, and Heart ✨

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Some books entertain, some books transport, and then there are books like The Storyteller from Balincia—books that change you.

From the moment I stepped into the richly woven world of Balincia and Driftstone, I knew I was in for something special. Birk’s journey isn’t just a tale of magic and adventure—it’s a story of belonging, self-discovery, and the power of believing in oneself. The worldbuilding is nothing short of mesmerizing; I could sense the pulse of magic in every word.

What truly sets this novel apart, though, is its diverse and beautifully inclusive cast. Every character felt alive, their voices distinct, their struggles and triumphs deeply moving. As a member of the LGBT community, this book made me feel seen. It’s rare to find a story that so effortlessly blends cozy fantasy with high-stakes action, all while delivering an emotional depth that lingers long after the final page.

But beyond the spellbinding storytelling, The Storyteller from Balincia taught me to trust my magic—to believe in the things that make me unique, to embrace curiosity, and to never lose sight of the adventure waiting just beyond the horizon.

This is a book for dreamers, wanderers, and anyone who has ever longed for something more. If you’ve ever felt the call of the unknown, if you crave a world that welcomes you with open arms and endless wonder, then this is the book you’ve been waiting for.

And now, I wait (impatiently) for Feyluna and the Tide Walker, coming in 2026. I already know it will be worth every second of the wait.

Final verdict? A must-read. A must-reread. A book that will sit on my shelf forever, ready to whisk me away to Balincia whenever I need a little more magic in my life. ✨📖💙

Sometimes, a book and my brain just don’t sync up at the right time, and I think that’s what happened here! The world-building was intricate, the magic system had a lot of potential, and the adventure was packed with high stakes and mystery. There were so many fascinating elements—the balance of Chaos and Order, the legacy of past generations, and a crew of characters with plenty of secrets—but I just wasn’t in the right headspace to fully connect with it. I found myself appreciating the creativity without fully getting swept up in the story.

That said, this is one of those books I know I’ll need to revisit when I’m in the mood for a deep, immersive fantasy. The themes of storytelling, destiny, and uncovering hidden truths are ones that always pull me in, so I have no doubt I’ll get more out of it the second time around. If you love layered world-building, magical prophecies, and a quest filled with danger and discovery, this is definitely worth picking up!

First let me start off by saying thank you to S.W. Kent for the honor of being an ARC reader for this book!

This is a MUST read! The author is absolutely brilliant! This story is extremely unique and very well thought out that you’ll be instantly captivated and immersed into the story. You feel as if you’re on this journey along side the character and on your own journey of self discovery. The magic system is amazing and the book as a whole is not like anything I’ve read before, in a good way!!

I absolutely loved the characters and their dynamics with each other! The diversity of characters is one of my favorite aspects of this book. No matter who you are I can guarantee you’ll see yourself in at least one of these characters! The representation of all people whether what you look like or who you love is all in this book!

I truly loved every second of this book and won’t stop recommending it to everyone I know! This is one of those books that stay with you way after you’ve finished it! It doesn’t necessarily leave on a cliffhanger either. It’s more a stepping stone into what is to happen in the second book. Which I literally am so excited to read! I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for these characters that I’ve come to absolutely love!

I was fortunate to receive this book as an ARC from the author. Thank you to S.W. Kent for this opportunity to read and review your work.

This review is spoiler-free.

I will admit, as a fantasy reader, I have read my share of Epic novels. This being a new indie author and their first publication, I had high expectations. I was NOT disappointed. What I did not anticipate was how much I would love these characters, cheer for their success, cry for their loss, and feel as if I, too, were a part of this family.

This novel offers all the elements you wish for in a fantasy. Worldbuilding on a grand scale with easily digestible, innovative, and descriptive details. Magic systems that engage and fascinate you while providing just the right amount of complexity, never leaving you confused.

Birk, our young storyteller, finds himself at a crossroads trying to find answers to many questions he’d never thought of asking. Having been raised by his aunts, two powerful witches Pan witch of Chaos, and Edi witch of Order, they have constructed the world of Balincia to be perfect. Satisfied with what has been provided for them, no one questions how things are, as this is how things have always been, a well-crafted utopia.

Perfection is, however, an illusion. Soon the witch's past comes back to remind them of how they got there. Birk begins to question the status quo and becomes the driving force of truth, the reminder of consequences, and the bridge between what was, and what can be. Youthful in his thinking, and desire to understand his origins, and navigate his feelings of betrayal he ventures off to find answers.

Birk soon discovers that while seeking answers, we are often led to more questions. Asking himself how far he’s willing to go to uncover the truth so expertly hidden from him, by those he holds dear. He faces internal struggles, moral dilemmas, and first love and found-family playing a significant role in this epic high-stakes adventure. Providing a well-crafted plot, richly developed characters, and edge-of-your-seat action, this story is splendidly and masterfully woven to leave no stone unturned, no question unanswered and the reader invested in what is yet to come.

There are several profound quotes and statements that will make you want to grab a highlighter.

The story encompasses diverse representation, not seen in many books, especially in YA fantasy. It is refreshing, normal, and uncomplicated by bias. The Storyteller from Balincia delivers a balance of love, action, intrigue, mystery, and community, with layers of complexity, allure and magic that we readers look for. It is one of the best novels in this genre I have read thus far. It is the story I didn’t know I needed.

I am excited to see where the rest of the story takes me. I highly reccomend this to anyone who loves fantasy, or is new to the genre.

This book releases March 25,2025 and pre-orders can be made through Amazon, Barnes & Noble. For more information please visit the author’s website at www.swkentbooks.com or his TikTok @s.w.kent.

Not gonna lie. I stumbled on an ad for this book, fell in love with the cover, was intrigued by the synopsis, but I had never heard of the author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m so thankful I took a chance on this treasure of a book.

It’s rare for a book to take me by surprise and it’s an added thrill to stumble on a new author before everyone else piles on. S.W. Kent- where have you been?! Count me as a fan for life if you keep this up. I hope you are busy writing the sequel and not reading reviews because I NEED more.

First, I get where some of the reviews may feel this may be slower paced in some areas, but I also think that’s a sign of this generation of readers- not the writing. This is a generation of immediate gratification, spice up front and scrolling after 2 seconds- they forget the savory sweetness of the classics and the excitement of a well-paced journey. This book brought back all the nostalgia of why I LOVE fantasy. This book is mature fantasy, and I don’t mean that in reference to age or spice, it’s an homage to the immersive, romantic, cozy, and slow burn build up of Fairy Tales and invested summers of getting lost in the woods.

This book DELIVERS. The ending of Part One: Tears. The Beginning and End of Part Two: Edge of Seat. Part Three…PART THREE…when you get to the last 100 pages…shut yourself in a room, no distractions, no sleepy time. It’s book throwing, screaming, laughing, nail biting, deep grinning, absolute bawling, shocking, FUN!

I’m a bit confused on why some reviewers are calling the relationship subplot Instalove- to each their own experience- but I didn’t pick that up. No one says I love you. Insta attraction, for sure. I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but the story sets up the why, and let’s be honest, I’d be insta attracted to both of the main MMC’s too. I found Birk and Grey relatable, adorable, the book boyfriends we all love, with all the heroic and laddish behavior for the guys to enjoy. I wanted to squeeze myself in between them on their adventures while they rode a big ole grizzly bear named Brunt through the forest.

The world building is a Tolkien lover’s dream, but the author adds his own charm and inventions. The writing is cinematic, I challenge any reader not to be able to imagine and or see the scenes come to life. But it’s the CHARACTERS that will have you fall in love with this book. I have a hard time even picking a favorite. The twin witches of Chaos and Order, Pan and Edi- chef’s kiss. Shayvonne is the bad ass mom we all wanted and the women we strive to be. Zara has the best inner monologues for a Princess since Princess Buttercup. Brynn and Thalon- you are going to want more of these two in everything. I’d read a spin off book just about them. Even the side characters: a frightening tall Royal Chef named Safrona, a non-binary warrior named Indigo, Ravenshire an insecure but loyal best friend, and a lil Dwarf chub named Biddy steal your heart.

This review is too long, I need to stop. I hope this author goes the distance, we need more stories like these. I’m going to have keep rereading until the sequel 😭

The Storyteller of Balincia is one of those novels that has a really interesting narrative and a wonderfully built world, but where the pacing and the later characterisations needed more work for me to become fully invested. As a debut novel, it is full of potential though and I really feel that if the author tightens up the writing and lays off the insta-love a little bit, there will be great things in store for us as readers in the future.

Balincians know only their purpose and provision from the two witches that rule their country. None of them know a thing about the history of their land other than it has always existed as such and always will. But when Birk is given a strange untold story, he finds his curiosity piqued and little by little the foundations of the world the sisters have created start to unravel as people start asking questions. Birk finds himself taken from his quiet, balanced world as a young Storyteller and thrust into a new world of dark prophecies, strange magic and dangerous beasts. Along the way, he may well find his own identity and a friends and found family he couldn't have previously imagined.

Where this really excels is in the world building and the way the narrative threads into that. I was really impressed with how the author turned my expectations on their head time and time and time again. I was very much expecting one thing and got something completely different and it was awesome. The way the two witches were drawn and the balance between Chaos and Order was very well done. I also loved the minutiae built into the world without ever seeming to lore dump with paragraphs of exposition; this is an entire world with all the rich vibrancy and diversity that comes with it. There's history and festivals and foods and all the things that bring a culture to life without feeling strained or over done. My favourite moments of this book were all very much centred in Balincia as the secrets start to unravel and the characters start to develop beyond the bounds previously set.

Where it starts to fall down is when we're introduced to the wider world and quest. It loses some of the richness, but more importantly the pacing becomes unwieldy, the narrative more disjointed and there's an influx of characters that aren't given the time to fully develop. The insta-love didn't help; it's one of my pet peeves regardless of sexual orientation. This would almost have worked better as two novels; focus one on Balincia and give more time to the rise and the cracks and the wonderful world building and characters that are developed here and then move onto the quest in a second book, developing the characters more slowly and giving them the page time they really deserve.

All in all, a book with a huge amount of potential and as a debut, I'll be really interested to see where the author goes with the series and with their writing as a whole. The ideas and world-building here, particularly at the beginning, are wonderfully depicted. And the early characterisations are really strong, it only starts to crack when too many characters are introduced in short succession. This is absolutely an author to watch with interest.

Trust Your Magic-the catch phrase you will hear all over S.W. Kent's social media page-holds to many different meanings and these meanings will differ for each reader! <3

This is my favorite read for 2025 and my favorite book EVER now!!
(I cried multiple times throughout this book. So many elements were moving!)

This Epic YA Fantasy is a whole experience! This story has so many diverse characters throughout this entire adventure that no matter who you are you will feel connected to at least one character. There are different races, different identities, LGBTQIA+ characters, different shapes and sizes and different hair colors! Aside from Magic Born and Non-Magic born humans there are also dwarves, elves and other fae related characters. There are also a ton of other mythological creatures from giants to arcanivores and little creatures that are adorable too.

The twin witches are all about balance and as a Libra this means everything to me, including the strong sense of justice I wanted all other characters to get! Everyone is trying to find answers to questions now to figure out what went wrong and also why they weren't allowed to question anything...

And I have to mention the food! The food sounds like you can taste it from the words on the pages!

I can't not talk about the magic book called the Driftstone and the magic doors!! I freaking love magic! Also, the complex dream element was one of my favorite elements. I am obsessed with researching dreaming and all of its concepts.

P.S. Chapter 20 will blow you out of the water ;)

I would recommend this YA Fantasy book for ages 13+ (it does include a closed door romance).
This book is written in a way that is easy to read and digest, yet it also has a vast vocabulary of words that just jump off the pages! This element makes it perfect for adults who want to reconnect to their inner child again!!! (I'm in my mid 30s and I ate this book up! His writing style is magic in itself to be able to accomplish that effect) Also, the I found the little poems/riddles throughout very fun and clever! I also love the page footer artwork and the chapter titles. The font is also delightful. He also put in so much thought into the large appendices at the end of the book. I love how he gave 3 ways to approach the appendices! I saved it for last personally. :)

Highly recommend to go follow S.W. Kent on his social media pages. His videos are so fun and genuine and he talks about this book so eloquently.

Another recommendation: Go check out the playlist on Spotify. It makes it even more of an immersive experience!

Lastly, this is a series so this is Book One and I'm so stoked for the next book already!!

100% will be re-reading this book!

Beautiful. Magical. Immersive World-Building.

My thoughts on this book won’t do it justice, but I’ll try. I loved it so much that I pre-ordered multiple copies to give as gifts to friends and family—along with a hardcopy for my own collection.

S.W. Kent’s The Storyteller of Balincia had me utterly entranced. The vivid descriptions of the landscape, the characters, and the insights into Birk, the Storyteller, transport you to Balincia and immerse you in its daily life. The setting is both familiar and otherworldly, blending reality with an enchanting sense of wonder. Reading this felt like watching a movie play in my head. I only wish I had the talent to bring it to life visually—but instead, I can simply say: I highly recommend experiencing this story for yourself.

Birk has lived a life that, while seemingly ordinary (at least by Balincia’s standards), holds something deeper beneath the surface. When his eyes are opened to a world beyond what he has always known and been taught, he begins to question everything. With his friend by his side, he embarks on an adventure filled with magic, beauty, and even more mysteries. His discovery of the Driftstone sets him on a path of self-discovery, drawing him deeper into a world rich with wonder and enchantment.

Beyond the story itself, the physical book is a work of art. The choice of cover artist, font style, and page details all enhance the magical experience. If I had seen this book on a shelf without knowing anything about it, I can confidently say I would have picked it up for its cover alone.
The author’s note and appendices at the end of the book add depth to the story, bringing together everything the reader has learned. While not necessary to understand the plot, these extras provide a fun and quick reference to Balincia’s world. The inclusion of a map and artwork by illustrator Yornelys Zambrano offers a glimpse into the author’s vision. Though the writing itself is vivid enough to stand alone, I absolutely loved seeing these visual elements. (P.S. I love a book with a map!)

I'll just say that if you love fantasy, you’ll adore this book—but truly, even if fantasy isn’t your usual genre, this is a story worth reading. It’s beautifully written, deeply engaging, and leaves you eager for the next book in the series.

Well done, S.W. Kent!

Disclosure: I received this book as an ARC from S.W. Kent, whom I’ve known through past work and mutual friends. I am truly honored to have been chosen to read his debut novel and wholeheartedly wish him all the success and recognition he deserves for sharing his incredible talent.

Birk has grown up safe and tucked away in Balincia, like the others there, completely unaware of the outside world and its history of turmoil. His aunts, the queens of order and chaos, have raised him as a storyteller. On the night meant to showcase his talents to the people of Balincia, a mysterious old woman gifts him a book—a book with empty pages and an ability to reveal secrets, but even more dangerous, posing questions that open Birk’s mind to the possibility that some things might not be as they seem in the peaceful realm. What Birk finds will lead him into a greater world where magic flows more freely, where creatures exist beyond his wildest imaginings, and friendships, love and alliances will enrich the course of his life. The story follows Birk as he uncovers the ancient war that rocked the world’s foundations and sent his aunts into hiding. And as he seeks the answers to his own questions, he unintentionally gathers a second generation of magic born to fight the war that never finished.

I have been following the author on TikTok for months, and I knew based on his videos that this book was going to be something special—I was not disappointed. The story is multifaceted and fantastically plotted. While you follow Birk forward into danger, you also learn about the past witches war that led to all of the present events. Everything feels well thought out, and the pacing is superb. The story never drags. The themes explored throughout are timely. Kent infuses his thoughtful exploration of good versus evil, free will, power, duty, love, etc with well timed wisdom. The world building, side characters and magic system are top tier. But what sets the novel far above its peers are the characters. Although we begin the adventure with Birk, each character is unique and well developed. When the point of view expands to include other voices, they are no less compelling. And Kent’s writing makes it clear that we will get to hear more from many of them. Kent’s treatment of characters is so fantastic that even a character that at first felt irritating and completely without merit becomes relatable and sympathetic with a well-timed, fully believable paradigm shift. This not something that always gets pulled off so well.

Finally, I would be remiss without mentioning that Kent set out to elevate character voices that have traditionally been less visible. Not only did he succeed in this endeavor, but he blew it out of the water. Not only do I recommend snatching up this book immediately, I highly recommend finding the author on social media and following him.

I received a free copy of The Storyteller from Balincia by SW Kent from net gallery for review. The thoughts and opinions written here are my own. I did not receive any compensation for this review whatsoever.

I just finished reading The Storyteller from Balincia by S.W. Kent I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a warm as well as refreshing take on magical storytelling. I found some of its elements a little bit confusing. At first the family dynamics of the land and its culture as one example. I also felt that the relationship between the two main characters was a little bit forced not too much but a little bit and sort of hinted at possible trauma bonding which could be problematic later on. But maybe that's the author's intention for something in a later book. Not sure. I say these things as an experienced peer support specialist who supports people dealing with these sorts of elements in their life. So maybe I'm overthinking it, in any case, like I said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I wonder how the author plans to have the relationships between the characters grow and change as more books come in the future. I only say my comment about more books because it was hinted at by the author at the end of this book. I hope that this is the case because I can't wait to see what happens with these characters and how they defend their land or how their land changes as a result. Also, I would love to see how these once waring characters, (the parents )come together and for new relationships. I encourage anyone who enjoys fantasy to read this book. I feel like this is a fantasy book for adults. However, as it does talk about more intimate relationships, it may not be appropriate for young children if I were to recommend an age for reading, I would say at least 16 to 18 in this case, but I'm also kind of relieved as an adult who a enjoys fantasies. Sometimes it's to go to find a fanciful story that also explores more adult themes. Thank you S.W Kent for this wonderful work of fiction. I cannot wait to see what happens to these characters in future books.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Storyteller of Balincia is an unforgettable fantasy filled with magic, adventure, and the power of storytelling. The story follows Birk, a young storyteller with a rare gift, as he embarks on a journey that challenges everything he thought he knew about his world and himself. Along the way, he finds unexpected allies, uncovers buried secrets, and faces a growing threat that could change the fate of Balincia forever.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its richly developed characters. Themes of found family, trust, and self-discovery are woven seamlessly into the narrative, making the emotional stakes just as compelling as the action. The magic system is unique yet easy to understand, and the world-building is immersive without ever feeling overwhelming. Every chapter serves a purpose, keeping the story engaging from start to finish.

What truly sets this book apart is its incredible diversity. The characters come from a wide range of backgrounds, and their identities are naturally integrated into the story. With LGBTQ+ representation and a cast that reflects a broad spectrum of experiences, this book provides a voice for those who often feel unheard in stories. As a middle school teacher, I see firsthand how important it is for students to find characters they can relate to, especially when they’re struggling to understand themselves. I love that I now have a book to recommend to those searching for a story that reflects their journey.

Beyond its thrilling plot, A Storyteller of Balincia is a heartfelt and thought-provoking read that will resonate with many. I highly recommend it for readers 13 and up, especially those who love fantasy worlds filled with trials, magic, heart and unforgettable characters.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the eARC!

In an isolated and protected country where two witches reign, Birk's powers start to awaken. He comes to realize that all is not how it seems, and that danger threatens his idyllic home. An adventure filled with action, diverse characters, prophecy and found family ensues to piece together the solution to preserving the world's safety.

I really enjoyed the whimsical and fairytale-esque setting, particularly in the first part of the book. The people of Balincia, through magical means, do not have access to their curiosty and to learning in general, which leads to interesting philosophical and political questions that are discussed in an accessible way. There are also a lot of great little nuggets of wisdom interspersed throughout.

The world-building is vivid, and appendices at the end give additionnal details to the magic system, the world and the characters and creatures which inhabit them. It is obvious that a lot of love and dedication was put into this world!

The story starts off as an individual quest of self discovery, but quickly becomes much grander with higher stakes. The cast is quite diverse in every way, without it feeling forced. I thought the romance started a bit too quickly for my taste, I would have liked for the characters to get to know each other better beforehand, but I quickly came to enjoy the couple's dynamic.

I sometimes found the dialogue to be a bit stiff; it didn't always flow as naturally as I would have liked. The world-building tended to be brought in a straightforward way, which is not my preference, altough it probably makes the story more accessible to the YA audience.

Overall, a very wholesome and heartwarming story! I'm looking forward to the sequel.

5/5 ★ | Best Book of 2025 — I’m Obsessed
“What if there was more to the world than you knew?”
That one question spiraled into one of the most magical, thought-provoking, and emotionally intense books I’ve read in a long time.

Set in the mysterious land of Balincia, ruled by twin witches from floating isles, the world seems perfect—no one questions its origin, and no one really wants to. But when Birk, the witches’ curious nephew and a young Storyteller, is given a magical blank book needing an author, everything changes.

What follows is a fast-paced, lore-rich fantasy adventure full of secrets, ancient legacies, and a dark prophecy. Birk is thrust into a much bigger world than he ever imagined, joined by:

Zara — fierce warrior princess, absolutely badass and my favorite
Grey — sweet, quiet, loyal… and 100% boyfriend material
Thalon — arrogant and maddening, but somehow still compelling 😤
Together, they uncover their parents’ mistakes, battle arcanivores, and face the terrifying wrath of a hidden enemy. The balance of their world hangs in the balance—and the truth may be more dangerous than the lies they’ve grown up with.
💬 Personal thoughts:
Birk reminded me so much of myself during a time when I was figuring out who I was. I loved Grey (where’s his spinoff??), and Zara is everything I want in a female lead. And Thalon… ugh. Frustrating, but well-written. 😂

The worldbuilding was so immersive, the emotional stakes were real, and I seriously cannot stop thinking about the lore. I'm 100% doing a reread soon, this time with tabs and highlighters because there’s just so much to unpack.

Highly recommend if you love:
✨ Chosen-one stories with a twist
✨ Found family
✨ Hidden histories and magical politics
✨ Characters with emotional depth

The Storyteller of Balincia is an interesting mix, although I found the moralizing a bit forced. Pan and Edi are twin witches with opposite powers of Chaos and Order, who founded Balincia after a great war between themselves and their 11 siblings, all of whom were created at the beginning of the world. Balincia is an ordered, balanced society, completely controlled by Pan and Edi for the good for the good of their citizens - but even benign control is control. Birk, the adopted nephew of Pan and Edi (it's a bit more complicated than that, but the complication is revealed as the story progresses, so no spoilers here) is a storyteller - his profession is to tell stories that inform the citizens of Balincia about their history, because reading and writing are forbidden, except to those whose professions require it. When Birk tells a new story, he is stopped by a citizen who gives him a book that upends his understanding of his world and his place in it, starting him on a quest that he pursues throughout the story.

The world building in this novel creates a beautiful world, full of diversity and wonder - but underlying that world is a darkness caused by a source of evil, which desires to destroy the world for its own benefit, for the pursuit of power - another of the 11 siblings. The twin witches who built Balincia have spent centuries trying to avoid this evil, but during the course of the novel, their sibling becomes aware of their existence and location, and the struggle to preserve Balincia, and several other worlds discovered in the course of Birk's quest, begins. I look forward to the next installment.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to S.W. Kent for being chosen as one of his ARC readers.

I loved everything about this story. Not only is it fantasy, my favorite genre, but there is something and someone here for everyone to enjoy and relate to (more on that in a bit). Unlike most fantasy novels, which have magic systems and world-building that can leave you feeling burnt out from just trying to keep up, The Storyteller from Balincia has an original magic system that lends itself to the story's originality while being easy to follow. The world-building is masterfully done and is captivating, crafting an incredibly detailed world for not only our characters but for us as readers. The attention to detail to create such rich histories, lores, etc., is not something you typically get in book one of a series.

The story's pace was enjoyable and delivered intentionally without filler. The introduction of the characters and their dynamics with each other just made the story that much more seamless. The Storyteller from Balincia must be the most diverse and inclusive read I have experienced in quite a while. The author brought in multiple races, body types, colors, sexual orientations, genders, non-binary, etc., which go beyond typical fantasy archetypes. Despite being so diverse, the acceptance and cooperation between these characters is a breath of fresh air and a much-welcomed change and captures the found family trope well.

If you are looking for your next epic fantasy read, and want a story that has relatable characters, a MM romance, found family, diversity, and tons more…The Storyteller from Balincia is a must-add to your TBR.

Birk lives in Balincia, raised by his witch aunts he has no idea who his parents are. Balincia is run very tightly with many rules and when people are born they are given calling. For Birk this means he becomes the Storyteller, one of the few people in Balincia whose allowed to learn to read.

But everything is not as ideal as it seems, Birk begins to uncover cracks in his aunts stories and soon discovers their lies after receiving a magical book form a stranger. Spurred on by strange dreams Birk discovers not only his own magic but a whole other world his aunts kept hidden.

He then goes on a quest to discover the truth about himself and Balincia. Here he meets many interesting characters. Grey, a magical descendent of the original 13 witches, an intimidating but kind man who Brik begins to feel some kind of way about. Along with Grey's family they strike out to help Birk on his quest. All while new terrifying monsters hunt anyone with magic.

This story is quite the epic journey. We get to meet a lot of interesting characters, all with depth and secrets of their own. The author does a wonderful job of not only world building, but character building as even the grayest of characters you can relate to. There is an interesting magical system here and it was fun getting see Birk's abilities grow. There is also a lot of character growth that keeps you interested and rooting for these characters.

This book was a lot of fun to read and is set up for a sequel, which I can't wait to dive into.

Thank you NetGalley and S.W. Kent for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Storyteller from Balincia is a classic hero’s journey with a modern sensibility, and it checked all the boxes for me. S.W. Kent’s world building is masterful and just when you think you have things figured out, there is another twist and layer to discover. Kent paints a picture of sometimes familiar and often unfamiliar landscapes and creatures, and develops interesting, diverse, three-dimensional characters. As we meet Birk and follow him on his adventure, I was instantly drawn in and rooting for him as he discovers the truth about himself and his purpose. The themes of questioning the status quo, leaning into uncertainty, trusting your magic, and fighting for your chosen family are genuine, inspiring, heartbreaking and heartwarming. This epic tale full of magic, romance, intrigue, trials, villains and heroes is just beginning as Birk and his friends reignite the battle over the heart of Driftstone and I can’t wait to see how the rest of this story unfolds.

As a middle school counselor, I can attest to the importance of representation in literature. For anyone, but especially for young people, opening a book and finding characters that look, feel, and think like you is a gift. The Storyteller of Balincia is such a gift and it was a pleasure to read.

Trust your magic. This catch phrase that the author uses to close out all of his social media posts is so fitting for this story, and it makes sense why he uses it. we all need to trust our magic, and the characters in this story, especially need to. I was picked to read this as an arc and I am so honored. If you like epic high fantasy of old, with a hero’s journey, found family, a little romance, and a battle of light versus dark, then this is the story for you! The inclusion is inspiring as well. People who haven’t had representation in published fantasy worlds before, finally do and it’s fantastic! The author does an amazing job of blending beautiful depictions of the scenery around, engaging dialogue and a compelling story, without overdoing it on any of them. I found myself getting attached to the characters. And you really get a feel for howy large the world really is! An in depth magic system, with an amazing amount of lore to the world. Everything you’d want from an epic high fantasy story. This is going to be an epic best selling series, I just know it! Oh, and Trust Your Magic!

This is a book by the debut author, S.W Kent, and it is an absolutely AMAZING YA epic fantasy!!
If you like found family, young love, diversity, fantasy, witches, magic, then THIS is your book!! There is something for EVERYONE in this book, and I PROMISE that you will identify with at least one of the characters in this book, if not multiple.
This book follows a young man by the name of Birk, who is a storyteller for the village he lives in called Balincia. Birk's two aunties are witches who created Balincia, and due to some circumstances, the people who live here are not taught to read. There are no bookstores or libraries, and this is why Birk is a storyteller. One night, someone Birk doesn't recognize hands him a mysterious blank book. I don't want to give the whole book away, but THIS is where the adventures start!
You can find this on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books a Million, or you can go to https://swkentbooks.com and save $10. Also, the week of April 14, the digital version will be on sale through Amazon.

Kent’s debut fantasy is a delight to unwrap, layer by layer - and I’ll enjoy repeat reads until the second book comes out 👀👀👀

The world-building & origin stories in Storyteller are textured & have complexity, yet are accessible. Kent’s care for the cast of diverse characters, their intersecting developmental arcs, wounds & gifts is evident, and makes this story a profound joy to read.
One of my favourite things about reading an author’s debut is seeing how deep their own passion for storytelling goes, how much they trust the reader to draw conclusions, pick up foreshadowing, and be willing to engage in the plot & follow the characters on their journey, whether the way is drenched in mystery, magic, or the glow of found family, true love, or love of power.
I’m so excited to read what Kent has in store for us in the rest of the Driftstone series & to discover what other stories he has to share.

EPIC!!!

Unlike anything you've read before, Kent has created an enchanting and exhilarating adventure. With a beautifully crafted world populated by distinctive and diverse characters you will join Birk on his journey as he embarks to uncover the truth of his past. The story is filled with magic, suspense, love and moments of self-discovery, as he learns that his destiny is far more complex than he ever imagined.

It's an emotional ride with moments of self realization as well the connection you build with the characters. I personally love the awareness that family is not always who you're related to!

Kent has seamlessly incorporated LGBTQIA+ representation and strong female characters into the story in a way we haven't see before. This book is, as Kent has mentioned, an opportunity for those who have never before seen themselves portrayed in a fantasy; a beautiful and essential space for so many.

Grab a copy and join the adventure!!!

"The Storyteller from Balincia" by S.W. Kent is a beautifully crafted fantasy novel that seamlessly blends rich world-building, compelling characters and thought-provoking themes. Birk’s journey of self-discovery, set against a world shaped by the contrasting forces of Order and Chaos, keeps readers engaged from start to finish. Kent’s storytelling is both lyrical and immersive, making Balincia feel alive and vibrant. With its deep emotional core, diverse representation, and fresh take on magic, this book is a must-read for fantasy lovers. I am someone who loves to read books with diverse characters and viewpoints, and this book was truly amazing. It is extremely diverse, but it always feels so organic and positive, showing that authors can write diversely in a positive way to ALL communities. A captivating start to the Driftstone Series—highly recommended!

This had an amazing amount of promise, the setting and characters were all really engaging with enough insights into a big overarching secret that we are sucked into the narrative immediately.

Unfortunately once the main character leaves his initial hometown for the broader world we are assaulted with a multitude of characters and places that expand the world very quickly and this is really jarring to the reader. We are introduced to some characters by a folk tale and then those names are replaced but it’s tricky to keep all the characters straight and the story begins to meander off course quite quickly. I think this was an excellent premise but suffered from a big jump in reader expectations with no set up and the last third of the book was a challenge to get through.

Thank you to NetGalley for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

What a rich world that I had the pleasure of stepping into. The world building of the setting and magic was immensely enjoyable. The pacing and structure of this novel felt akin to a cinematic story; I felt I could visualize the events and characters.

There were some technical things like POV switching and some punctuation in the beginning that threw me off and had me pausing, thus breaking my immersion but I slowly got into the groove of it.

I look forward to seeing this story and these characters grow and expand.
