Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.
Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.
In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.
Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.
In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.
In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.
After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.
A whole new take on Elseworlds-y take on Superman. Ok, Aaron. Let's see what you got.
I'm reading these digitally on DC Infinite, btw. And to be quite honest, this first issue didn't blow me away. I've never been a fan of stories about Krypton and this is heavy on Jor-El and Lara, with Kal-El/Clark being a small child, not an infant, when they find out Krypton is gonna 'splode. Krypton, instead of being a utopia, is a class-based world. And due to both of his parents being outspoken against social and environmental issues, even though they are both intelligent, they are now worker bees in the lower class. This is where the iconic S comes from, not some family crest.
Again, this is only the first issue, so we aren't to the part where Supes gets jettisoned to whatever Earth he eventually lands on. But he does eventually land on an Earth. He's got what seems to be a sentient AI suit that talks to him all sassy-like, much like some of Iron Man's AI. So that could either be fun or draining, depending on how the rest of these issues go.
There's some evil corporation on this Earth that's sucking out the natural resources and there's a spoilery character who is working for the military side of it. So. Nice little cliffhanger at the end that made me kind of want to keep going. We'll see.
The fact that I have to wait a whole month for the next issue is absolutely criminal. Also, they had no business making Kal's parents so hot.
Now that all three of DC's absolute titles have come out, I can confidently say this is shaping up to be something truly special indeed. I'm on my toes waiting for each issue, and for the life of me, I can't decide which I like the best so far. Batman? Wonder Woman? Superman? No idea, they're all such fresh takes on these iconic characters and equally as good.
A solid first issue. Closer to a 3.5 but the art I'll bump it to a 4. Basically sets the stage on earth and on Superman's homeland where the poor are treated like garbage, and it's no surprise yet Superman is trying to fight back against the injustice. A lot of world building makes the pacing slow here but once it kicks it up, the last half and the backdrop to Supes as a child, make this one pretty interesting.
Man what a truly different take on the OG Superman story but it’s atmosphere and elements I gotta say I’m 100% here for. I love the flashbacks showing the altered ending krypton and truly I’m interested in seeing what changes in this universe prompted a more savage, altered, and solitude formed Superman. And one who’s companion in this new AI like companion in Sol I find utterly intriguing and can’t wait to see how it’s fully utilized and fleshed out, not to mention that slight peak behind who might be running this universes earth made it the start for quite the journey. 3.75/5
Now that's a kryptonian origin. I was expecting to explore krypton deeply. This issue has the potential to dive into the planet. The suit looks awesome. After reading all the 1st issues of batman wonder women and superman, i think superman will be on the top list for me.

Comic Book Review

Full disclosure: I've never considered myself a big Superman fan, but I picked this issue up mostly out of curiosity--I enjoyed both Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman, and I was interested in seeing a different interpretation of Superman as well. This first issue definitely feels like a fresh take, though I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about it overall.
It didn't immediately grab me, but I'm intrigued enough to keep reading. So far, I'd say it's a promising start.
This is a great opening and an intriguing take on a classic tale of Superman the artwork and story telling are captivating from the start and leave you wanting more
A heavier read than what I was expecting but still a solid first issue. I’m not quite connected to this new Kal-El as I am with the absolute takes on Bruce and Diana, but perhaps that is the intent since Kal himself is not connected to anything or anyone at the moment.
Having been born to hard working laborers rather than the ruling class of krypton, this Kal has learned from an young age that there will always be people who try to demean and abuse others due to a difference in opportunities, viewpoints, and status. Unfortunately for Kal things aren’t all that different on earth as he finds himself a fugitive at large.
Digging the art and the idea of him having a solar suit to help him maintain (or control) his powers is cool, curious how the story will unfold though.
Sporting a new solar suit that helps him maintain and control his abilities, this man of steel is searching for hope not only in the world around him but within himself.
I thought it was interesting how our heroes upbringing has changed tWhether it’s on another planet or earth there’s always those who try to demean and abuse others due to their opportunities, viewpoints, or status, a lesson this Superman learned at a very young age. It’s colored his view of others, and it doesn’t help that he seems to be on the run from a global enterprise looking to capture him.
Instead of being a symbol of hope, this Kal-El seems to be searching for hope and a reason for being
Instead of being an embodiment of hope this Kal-El is trying to
I was so excited about this one. A Superman that didn’t grow up on Earth is drastically different from the Clark Kent we know and love. Long gone is the Boy Scout, and now we essentially get a Marxist Kal-El. Even the symbol of hope that he wears on his chest has changed meaning in this universe. It is an indication of the Kryptonian lower class and represents how his parents fought for change at the cost of their social statuses and wealth.
I’m curious to see how he’s going to cope in an entirely new world as an adult.
While the basis of the absolute universe is that it will be different to the main universe. Absolute Superman feels the furthest from the original character out of the 3 books. While some elements of the other 2 titles remain in their books, kal el has everything removed. I can't wait to see how this and the other 2 titles play out going forward. The story that is being told goes back to the original superman's roots of a people champion while being updated for a new world.

Really different yet great take on Superman that I really enjoy the changes to powers and the Krypton lore. The Krypton history is always something I enjoyed seeing with every Superman take and I like the changes they made with his family. His suit and powers are also very different which I can’t wait to see more of in upcoming issues.
This cover single-handedly saved this issue. Superman looks so freaking badass on that beautiful cover, wow. I read this on the train today and I flew through it. Nice origin story with good art. Got me very intrigued for the next issue!
My first time reading a Superman comic (I know I know, never really been a Superman fan, sorry) and I thought this was pretty good and interesting. Looking forward to seeing where it all goes
I don’t usually do reviews of single issues but holy hell this comic floored me. I’m absolutely obsessed with it- I promise I have genuine thoughts but I’m just like in shock right now
