Edwin is a Seer, one of the few remaining in the world, who can see places and animals that the normal eye cannot. When his parents, the legends that would find the ancient cave and destroy the book Darkness, are killed before they can, Edwin finds it his duty as heir to the legends, to live out their destiny. In this day and age, wolves twice the size of the average ones with red beady eyes, walking piranha that destroy anything in water or on land, and even a pearlescent white dragon will only be some of the creatures Edwin will have to cross to reach the cave that Darkness is hidden in. Along the way he learns of several powers that he has been gifted with, when strangely a normal Seer is only gifted one. The cave will reveal incredible secrets and what he thought to be true may just unravel the world that he is so desperately trying to save.

I love MG books! It's been a long time since I've read a middle grade book, and I was not disappointed. Searching For Darkness takes you on a journey through a decaying world destroyed by dark magic. Edwin is a young boy who lost his parents, but discovers that he has inherited a gift. He sets out to find a book that must be destroyed in order to ensure that dark magic can never be used to rule the world. Edwin faces many obstacles on his journey, but he finds lifelong friendships along the way. Lena, a forest girl, becomes his closest ally, and a dragon set to avenge the death of her child, becomes a trusted companion to the pair. Ward's book is full of adventure and magic and all the components of an action-packed tale. MG readers should pick this one up for sure!
This is the first middle grade book that I have read in a long time. It is filled with adventure, magic, and has a dragon....what more can you ask for. It did seem to fly by a little fast and a lot happens in the week once Edwin discovers his destiny but like I said I haven't read a middle grade book in awhile, so I understand it has to be faster paced to keep the younger readers interested!!
Our male protagonist Edwin lives his daily teen life with his adopted dad Agmund, until one day a swarm of massive black birds almost kills him. Edwin soon finds out that he is a seer and he can see things people normally can't.He learns that his parents were both seers, and were killed trying to destroy a book that contains a single spell capable of wiping out the entire universe.
Realizing his parents were legends Edwin starts his dangerous journey in seeking for the book Darkness. He faces many challenging life and death situations soon realizing that he has special powers. Normally seers are know for only one power. But Edwin contains many. Maybe that's why all the past seers who journeyed in search for Darkness died? Who knows?
Lena saves Edwin from nearly dying in a storm and drowning. Since Lena has some experience helping seers search for Darkness, she decides to help Edwin on his quest. Both Edwin and Lena gain help by a super massive dragon named Satiya, who has vowed to serve the legends. During their time together Lena learns more about Edwin and why he's searching for Darkness. Although there are some things she doesn't dare tell him about. Edwin enjoys his time with Lena, she hunts and gathers the food for them while there on their quest but, whenever it feels like he's getting closer to knowing her, she starts to close off.
There are treacherous obstacles that Edwin and Lena go through in Searching for Darkness that test Edwin's power to the point of almost death experiences!
I really adored the relationship between Edwin and Lena. It's like their on the brink of being more than just friends but, not quite yet. I felt like Searching for Darkness was a twist of The Hobbit, and The Percy Jackson series with a great twist! Even though it's a middle grade novel it felt like was a YA novel with all of the suspense and the authors writing style! Searching for Darkness was packed with full of suspense, adventure, and action that kept me only toes! I was so submerged in it I couldn't put it down!
I especially loved the plot twist near the end of the novel!! I really didn't think that would happen! The idea of having the setting in the future was really awesome too! It reminded me a lot of the Ice Age! So excited for book two to come out!! In book two I feel like darkness may come around the corner and Edwin and Lena may have to go on another journey!
I bought Leah's first book "the Art of Words" and fell in love with her writing. I was super excited that she was releasing a YA novel. As soon as I started reading Searching for Darkness I became addicted. It has an awesome plot, lots of action, adventure and suspense. As you continue reading you really start to love the characters, you feel as if you know them and you care about them. Towards the last few chapters it became really interesting. It left me saying "oh my god!" in disbelief over and over again. So many amazing plot twists. When I got to the final page all I could think was no, this can't possibly be the end; but to my dismay it was. I can't wait for a sequel to come out!
I loved this book! It was a short and nice break from some of my bigger reads. The story was fascinating and easy to follow. It was wonderfully descriptive, and very imaginative. There were creatures I could only dream of in the story. The main character's journey was fun to read as he went through his adventure, facing new challenges as they came along. He made new, interesting friends and he discovered amazing magical powers. The characters were relatable in a way, and at the end there was a twist that I definitely did not see coming. I'm very happy with this read, and think it's good for any Middle Grade reader or older reader. I can not wait for the sequel!

This is the first middle grade book I've picked up in a while, and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying it. Typically this genre is not in my comfort zone, but the world Leah Ward has created is packed full of the type of action and adventure all young readers will crave. From the very first page, I was captured by the amount of pure imagination and possibility Edwin's character portrayed. This debut novel is a great step towards a successful career in middle grade fantasy for Ward. I am eager to see where this series takes her, as well as any future projects she might have in store!
Searching for Darkness is the perfect book for someone looking for a short, to-the-point adventure. It was definitely action packed, never allowing me to get bored. The twist at the end was TOTALLY unexpected, and I thought that the author was very imaginative for thinking up all the obstacles that Edwin and Lena had to go through. Overall, a very good read.
I won this book from the author off of Instagram. So glad I did. This book was amazing, I really enjoyed the story and the characters. It was exciting, magical, and dramatic. My only complaint would be it sometimes moved a little to fast in some places. It made it a little bit hard to keep up with the story at a couple of points in time. Overall worth the read!
Leah Ward is a wonderful storyteller. I read the whole book of "Searching for Darkness" in one sitting (5 hours) finding myself pressing on chapter after chapter as each left you wanting to know more, revealing just a glimpse at a time how the story was gong to play out.
I have to say that this is an awesome book,I really love all of them . I can't wait to read it in Spanish . I love the cover, the story, all the simbols, metaphors and.....all. I recommend to all the people that want something different, magical and really really cool.
Searching for Darkness, by Leah Ward, is a story of discovery. Literally.Edwin is special: He's part of a legacy but he's totally and utterly oblivious to it. That is, until he's attacked by things no-one else can see and has to hid behind shelter that literally wasn't there before. He is told, by his caregiver that he has a gift, making him a Seer. He's told the truth on where and why his parents died and an explanation to the gift he now has.
His parents were on a mission: to locate the Darkness, a book of unspeakable evil. In the wrong hands, the world could be destroyed- the universe even! So as most silly boys will, Edwin decides to run away from his adoptive home to go out and find the book too. He has no skills in sword play and since he just obtained hisSeer power, he's pretty much on a quest with nothing.
At first, I was irritated with Edwin. His actions were rather impetuous- with him sneaking away the following morning after learning why his parents vanished. To take up the mantle and run off in search of Darkness alone was insane! I also thought his actions a bit accelerated, but it didn't ruin the story- more so, it made the story. He started the journey ignorant and full of blind hope and ended with a bit of maturity that allowed me to grow to enjoy him. Speaking of characters, Lena was the cute, hilarious sidekick that made the tale. She turned out to be my favorite! I have to admit, I loved the world Ward created and look forward to reading more from her.
