When I was claimed by a monster who said my Strega witch blood was powerful, I didn’t believe him - because nothing shows you how powerless you are like a forced marriage to a vampire. Girls like me are cautionary tales, not the heroine of the story.
Then my mother walked out of the shadows and into Italy on a ray of light.
This time, her lessons lead to power instead of pain. All the vagueness of my sixth sense suddenly has a shape… and I can sculpt it into a weapon.
Carmine Montefiore is not my husband by choice. He’s a vampire who scented me. He’s a mafioso who kidnapped me. But like a girl with nothing to lose, I fell in love with the dark.
He put me in thrall when he took my blood. I rewrote his heart when I found it waiting for me. We need each other as much as we want each other.
To earn my freedom, I could master my magic and end the monster who made me fall for him, or defeat the most powerful monster of all.
CD Reiss is a New York Times bestselling author. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.
Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.
She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping a single cord of wood.
If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
Do I understand what “Thrall” means yet? No, but I’m happy to be here 😂🤣!
I’m not going to get into the specifics of the plot here because this is the second book in a trilogy and book 1 ends on a big cliffy, and I don’t want to reveal any spoilers.
The first third of the book was a little slow for me, and I had to push myself through it a bit. However, once that first third was out of the way, it was full steam ahead! My favorite part of the book was the last 10%!
The audiobook performances were outstanding, just like I knew they would be. If you’re an audio person, treat yo self and get the full cast + duet narration audiobook! You deserve it 🥰
Vampire mafia romance…written in that distinctively addictive way that only Christine can. Her worlds she creates are so creatively ingenious, and the Immortal Empire is no exception. The recap at the beginning was seriously perfection.
Deep Thrall was so perfectly titled cause I was definitely bewitched under a spell by Carmine Montefiore.
He and Luna’s chemistry, holy smokes, these two were combustible. I loved the way Luna challenged Carmine in only the way she could. Their push and pull was so good.
I was kept on my toes, nervously flipping to the next chapter cause there wasn’t any telling what was coming. The suspense is still thick and intense. Though this cliff wasn’t as bad as the first but I’ll still be patiently impatiently waiting for the next book.
And. Thee. Audio. What a masterpiece. An incredible treat for my ears. A duet performance with Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor Rose Dioro featuring and Dane Anderson along with cameos by new to me narrators; Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg. Together they all took this story to the highest of heights making for a book that near impossible to hit pause.
My favorite part of this book is how CD Reiss recapped the previous book in the beginning. For that, I will love her forever. So helpful!
It's cool to see Luna grow in this one, along with so many interesting characters throughout! And Carmine's back story was QUITE the tale. It feels like this is gearing up for a grand finale, but I'm also now really invested in some side character stories.
Wowza! Let me start by saying that unlike my usual reviews I won't recap major points of the book. Reasons: it's pretty much a book 2 in a series and it will be very spoiler-y. Also, Christine provides an amazing tongue-in-cheek summary for book 1 at the beginning. Let's just say we pick up exactly where we were left with our jaws on the floor at the end of book 1 with a detour through Carmine, Il Capo's origin story. We learn how and where and by whom he was made and how he ends up where he is now.
Luna, even though she's deep "in thrall", has more agency in this book. She's WTF-ing her way through this mess, but wouldn't you? She has a lot to process!
I also have to tell you that you DO need to read book 1 and you'll probably turn into that guy on the conspiracy theories meme with the white board and all the notes with this one. I kinda did. A LOT happens and it happens non-stop.
Another aspect I really appreciated is the quiet and "it is what it is" queer representation happens in this book. It makes a point by just being there and kudos to how Christine writes non gender conforming characters.
I loved the banter and how the "mundane" and contemporary aspects of life still befuddle Carmine. It's like your boomer grandpa learning to text and it's hilarious.
Yes, you will scream at the end ... AGAIN. Book 3 can't come soon enough.
Content notes: seriously?? It's a story of a Mafia Capo who is a vampire, married to a powerful witch and they are in a quest to find a way to survive. Expect ANYTHING.
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 Stars — A slow burn… a little too slow this time
I was so excited for Deep Thrall and had been anxiously waiting to dive back into Carmine and Luna’s world. Part 2 had so much potential to raise the stakes and push their story forward. Unfortunately, it just didn’t hit the way I hoped it would.
The pacing really dragged for me. Instead of the tight tension and intense momentum I expected, the plot stalled while diving deep into Carmine’s backstory. I get the intention—adding context, layering his character, showing the weight of his past—but it made things feel slow and, at times, repetitive. I found myself wanting to nudge the book and whisper, “Hey… let’s get moving.”
There are interesting pieces here, and I still love the dark, atmospheric tone Reiss is known for. But overall, this installment didn’t grip me the way Part 1 did. Here’s hoping the next chapter brings back that spark I was craving.
The next book in the Immortal Empire trilogy is here!!! If you love vampires and dark fantasy/paranormal vibes and characters with wild chemistry, I think you will love this book!
Speaking of chemistry, the narrators did an AMAZING job on the audio!!! Let’s be honest, this cast is so good at what they do! Each character has their own vibe (and accent!) and I can’t possibly pick a favorite. In a book like this with multiple characters, it was so easy to follow along.
We learn more about Carmine and we get to see Luna really start to understand her power. The world building is so good - every time I think I understand what’s going on another twist or secret or surprise is thrown your way!!
✨What To Expect: ⚔️ Paranormal Romance ❤️🔥 Enemies To Lovers 🇮🇹 Italian Mafia 🩸 Vampires (the dirty, bloody kind) 🩸 Single Dad 💍 Forced Marriage 🩸 Bloodlust 🔥 Every other kind of lust ⁉️ Suspense 🔮 Magic
Reiss delivered an intoxicating blend of vampire seduction, mafia brutality, and obsession that had me absolutely feral.
This story is dark, elegant, and erotic in that signature Reiss way but with added fangs and blood oaths. The vampire-mob fusion? Genius. It’s savage and seductive, wrapping you up in a world where desire and danger are one and the same.
And the narration was exquisite. The voices dripped with dominance, vulnerability, and raw tension. I wasn’t just listening, I was submitting. Fully enthralled, pun very much intended.
The MMC is powerful, predatory, and unrelentingly in control…but never without emotion. The FMC is complex, defiant, and slowly unraveling in the most delicious way.
This is the kind of story that doesn’t ask for your consent…it takes it.
** Audio Review ** Be still, my beating heart! Deep Thrall by CD Reiss was an alluring, tempting vampire romance that had me consumed and enthralled from start to finish. Luna and Carmine’s enticing journey continues answering so many questions and once again leaves you wanting more. Learning more about Carmine’s origin was fascinating, as well as his strong connection to Luna. This is book two in Reiss’ Immortal Empire series, and Blood Bride should be read first.
Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke perform this audiobook in duet narration. Samantha’s soft, gentle voice continues to capture Luna’s passionate and determined persona as she discovers what it means to be in thrall with Carmine, strengthening their love more. Jason’s low, rumbly voice embodied Carmine’s love for Luna and his determination to find his reason to fight to live. Jason’s Italian-accented dialogue for Carmine felt authentic and swoony. Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson, along with Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg, perform numerous side characters with various accents and tones, making this audiobook fully immersive and just like a movie!
Overall, I enjoyed this book! If you are a fan of a vampire romance with a feisty, determined strega, a haunted protective vampire, Carmine’s backstory, Luna’s mother, thrall, sinking ships, evil vampire villains, bloody spicy spice, love declarations, ravens in flight, the search for answers, dangerous encounters, soothing singing, intimate conversations, a jaw dropping climax, and another cliffhanger ending that will leave you needing answers, then you will continue to fall hard for Luna and Carmine. I can’t wait for more!
Deep Thrall is Book 2 in the Immortal Empire series and must be read in order. This was a fantastic sequel to Blood Bride. We learn about Carmine's origin story. It's very dark and twisted. What he went through was so awful. He did everything he could just to survive. The sequel does continue where the previous book ended. I loved learning more about the world. I loved that Carmine and Luna are not separated for too long in this book. This was deliciously spicy and kept me enthralled the entire time. I had a great time listening to the audiobook.
The audiobook narration, is phenomenal!! This is a full cast in duet with returning narrators: Jason Clarke, Samantha Brentmoor, Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson. With new additions including Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenburg. Jason and Samantha were terrific in this one. Jason brings so much life to Carmine. This character was made for him. Samantha brings out Luna's personality more in this one. I loved every moment of Carmine and Luna. Rose and Dane reprise their roles and they did a great job bringing their characters to life. Scott and Marcus are new to me narrators. They portrayed their characters so well. I felt their voices matched the characters. Overall, I loved this one and recommend this series!
Audiobook out now!
Thank you to @mustloveaudio for my ALC and for the opportunity to review and listen.
I loved how this book starts with a (funny) recap of what happened in the first book. I was quickly reminded of everything Luna and Carmine. We see what made Carmine, well, Carmine. It’s an interesting history and story. I liked the way in which his story was revealed. It’s not for the faint of heart! We also see what happenned to Laro. Carmine has put Luna in thrall so while she’s still feisty and has her own thoughts, she must obey Carmine! But she also did her own thing to Carmine. They are truly entwined. It’s an interesting story that had so many twists and turns! Definitely recommend this one! But be sure to read Blood Bride first!
For my audio listeners, this book is freaking fantastic in audio! The cast is *chef’s kiss* and I love how this story is told. 10/10 recommend the audiobook!
I legit screamed at the end.. I screamed why and no to an empty room, thank God for the emptiness or I would have sounded crazy ;) What am I supposed to do with myself now?! I need book 3 ASAP...cause CD Reiss threw me in many ways and now I need all the answers!
My mind was blown to smithereens by the jaw dropping CD Reiss induced cliffhanger ending in book one, Blood Bride. I thought I would go crazy waiting for the next book, but all is forgiven now... it's finally here!
Deep Thrall picks up where that wicked cliffie left off, with the author's witty catch-up synopsis sliding me right back into the zone. I was amped up, ready for more and hanging on every word, because you never know where this wildly intense, magically mysterious story might take you. Talk about thrills and chills, it's been one crazy trip so far, courtesy of this masterful storyteller.
Luna is coming into her powers with a little help from an unexpected source, but look out underworld while she's learning to control them! Being trapped in the deepest of thralls is a royal beesh- working around Carmine's stealthy power move could make or break her. I was glued to every intricate detail of this story, as I merrily neglecting the rest of my life.
Carmine's staying one step ahead of his enemies while old foes, demons and packs are lurking and plotting. But holding on to his fading immortality and keeping Luna safe are testing his limits. And then there's that stake in his chest that's been a problem for half a century....
Love, love, love Deep Thrall's intriguing, morally gray characters- they do bite back when provoked. Ruthless Italian vampires with their 'glamorous ways', wily Strenga witches steeped in tradition, and others with alpha intentions, all stretching the boundries of their powers as they entwine themselves in centuries old Mafia lore and domination. Need I say more?
Carmine Montefiore and Luna Beneforte's tumultuous, addictive, and suspensefully complex life together is spicy, hot and twisted like a pretzel. I can NOT get enough of this 500 year old King of Ravens and his strong-willed, powerful bride. I loved devouring the winding trail of breadcrumbs, past and present, that kept me on my toes, time and time again.
CD Reiss skillfully casts her own spells, delving into the deepest, darkest parts of her Immortal Empire series universe. Vampire Camorra? Yes, she went there, thank goodness, I loved everything about it! She is in a class by herself and I am thrilled to be reading whatever she writes, to eternity and beyond, if need be!
This book is not a standalone. Blood Bride, book one, begins this juicy journey. Deep Thrall continues it- but wait... there will be more! Stay tuned!
I was thrilled to receive an early copy of this book to read and review. All thoughts are my own and freely given.
Deep Thrall had me captivated from beginning to end. Blood Bride must be read prior to Deep Thrall, as this story picks up right where the former left off after we get the background of Carmine. There is a lot happening in this story but I don’t know how to put it all in words without rambling, and I Refuse to spoil. So in short I’ll say, it’s so good and it’ll leave you wanting more! Plus, you have an excellent audiobook performance given by an incredibly talented cast of narrators!
This is such a well written story with both nods at the past and inclusion of the contemporary. Poor Carmine, learning the language (can we really call Brain Rot Words a language 🤔😅) and technology of the day when he’s like 600 years old, is both hilarious and endearing. I love so much about this story. Not only is it an intriguing story that is weaved with expertise, but having gender fluid characters, that just are who they are? Much appreciated.
Luna starts to really come into her own, with the help of an unexpected source. She loves Carmine and he loves her, but the way they came to be leaves much doubt between them. The Thrall is like a main character in itself with it’s ever presence. Between the blood lock, the fiddling Luna did, and the Thrall, what can they really trust is real and what is circumstantial? No matter what it truly is, there are feelings there, a pull and an attraction that cannot be denied.
There are forces that are working against Carmine and his task. Forces that may end Carmine for good. We meet new characters, encounter lots of twists and turns, experience revelations, and find out serious truths. Though some questions will be answered, you will be left with more. Not to mention another shocking end.
OMG. So, the narration was spectacular. I love that instead of saying the chapters we know whose it is by the sound we’re given. Jason Clarke is a master performer. He is the perfect Carmine, giving us his deep timbre as well as an Italian accent. Plus that little diddy of a jingle!? GAH! 😍 Samantha Brentmoor is my hero in voice actor form. She is INCREDIBLE. Like, I don’t know what else to say about her that I haven’t said before. I love everything about her. Then there is Rose “I’m absolutely obsessed with how amazingly talented she is” Dioro and Dane “I’m as equally obsessed with his freaking jaw dropping talent” Anderson. These two were phenomenal with ALL of the different accents, different personalities, just AH! Everything! And I can’t leave out the lovely cameos by new to me Scott Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg! They were amazing and helped add more depth to this story! I hope to hear them all together again in the next installment!
Thank you so much to CD Reiss and Must Love Audio for this audiobook! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it! I absolutely MUST find out what happens next. Like, again!? 😅
🧛♂️“For Luna I would. My eternity goes in one direction, hers.” ✨“That’s my beautiful little witch. Look how you take all of me inside all of you.”
“The reason I fight to live is so I can keep loving you.”
I think this audio had ME in a deep thrall, because what in the hell happened to me during this audiobook?! I was enraptured the ENTIRE time!! & the recap at the beginning?? I wish this was done more in books! Especially fantasy and paranormal romance series. I’m so appreciative to CD for including this, and the way that all of the narrators recapped everything that happened in Blood Bride actually had me chuckling! 🤭
Okay, so where do I start? Do I start with how transformative and creative this series is? Do I talk about how sexy Carmine is? What about how seamlessly the plot, spice and character/world building was woven into the story? Or how about how absolutely divine the audio production and narration is with a full cast of AMAZING voice actors?! Because all of that and more deserves attention! I haven’t read a lot of vampire romances, really since I read Twilight as tween, but man this made me yearn for more like this!! CD’s writing in this series is so good, and so unique! It’s so enthralling and so visual. The whole thing played like a movie reel in my brain and it was addicting!! I’m so totally invested in this series and these characters. I really loved the deeper dive into Carmine’s past, it really added to his character. I also think Luna is such a fun fmc, and I love the way her mind works. She’s the perfect match for Carmine in every way!
One thing I will note, is that this story is plot and character driven, so you must pay attention or else you’ll miss key details. It could just be a me thing, but if you devote your attention to every word, CD will take you on a journey unlike anything you’ve ever been on. ☺️ I also must say… THE CLIFFHANGER?! 😳🤯 I NEED BOOK THREE IMMEDIATELY.
WHEW, this audio is a hell of an experience, and the cast?! PERFECTION. 🤩 Immediately yes, to every single VA in this audio. Every single actor mattered and they each added SO much to my enjoyment of this. They’re all so extremely talented and you could tell they gave their all to this blockbuster performance! Samantha and Jason as our main characters was the best choice ever made for the production of this masterpiece. They fit so well as our Luna & Carmine. Dane and Rose, with the addition of Scott and Marcus as supporting roles were equally as incredible. This audio came together so beautifully, and I cannot recommend this series on audio enough!!
If you thought book one was good, well get ready, book two; Deep Thrall is gonna throw you for a loop. Deep Thrall is the second installment in the Immortal Empire series and it picks up right where book one ends. Kudos to the author for the recap of book one before launching right back into the story. Book one (Blood Bride) is a required read before consuming this book, there is far, far too much that happens in that book, you will not understand most of DT if you have not read book one.
As we jump back into Luna and Carmine’s story we get pieces of Carmine’s past. How he was sired and why he is the way he is. At the same time we see Luna develop more and more with her powers, learning more about them and controlling them. She is slowly becoming a force of nature. There is so much to this book, action, gut wrenching drama, character growth and understanding, magical power boots and decisions that make no dang darn sense. Carmine is determined to find a magical knife, but also keep Luna safe, this proves difficult as Luna wants to make her own choices and have more freedom over herself.
While these two have developed true feelings for one another there is still the fact that Carmine forced her into their marriage. Their chemistry and passion remain fierce, but their relationship will be put to the test. Can Carmine allow Luna the freedom she needs to grow or will their relationship crash and burn? Will they find the knife they need so badly?
Just wow. Every time I thought I had a grasp on what was going to happen there was a twist, a secret being revealed for more questions to pop up. Ms. Author sure has made her career on keeping her readers guessing. Carmine and Luna have such a unique relationship, one where they clearly need one another, but also want to be with each other. They are on this quest of Carmine’s and the more that I read the more I want to know. And the ending? Goodness, I thought this was going to be a two book duet, but I am happy to see that the story has more to come. Deep Thrall is a deeply suspense filled, emotional story that leaves the reader with a deep need for more. I can’t wait to find out how this series ends.

Well - my book bestie was right…I’ll never think about a blood orange the same way again!!
This series sent me sprinting back into my love for vampires. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (tv show) is part of my lore but I haven’t read any vampire series since Twilight! Blood Bride definitely appealed to my darker tastes. Not only was it dark and sultry, but the overarching plot pulled me right in. I’ve always liked how the vampire “rules” are always slightly varied based on the storyteller making each one unique.
When I started this one I wasn’t in the mood for dark, but I was in the mood for the narrators - when am I NOT in the mood to listen to Jason and Sam? Once I finished Blood Bride I had to start Deep Thrall immediately and while it doesn’t have as much spice as Blood Bride, the plot twists and action are so wild you’ll never notice!
The duet narration was phenomenal! Performances like this one are why the Samantha/Jason duo is a fav of mine and why Sam is consistently in my top 3 most listened to narrators. I have to give Jason some extra love on this one because his accent work was to die for!! 😏 He also had some wonderful emotionally unguarded moments throughout that really had me jaw-dropping my speechless and close to tears. I think Sam’s timing added some great comedic relief in places and vulnerable tenderness in others. I also have to imagine she comes by her defiant sass naturally because it always hits - slay queen! Together, their chemistry is top tier and any audiobook is an easy choice to listen to when they’re listed together. Having Dane and Rose voice the supporting characters throughout added some wonderful variation to the 30+ hours between the two books! Their range and accent work was fun to experience for the first time. Deep Thrall adds two additional supporting voice actors with Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg.
Blood Bride and Deep Thrall are books 1 and 2 of the Immortal Empire series and must be read in order. Please note that Deep Thrall will be available everywhere except Audible - too much 🌶️🌶️🌶️ apparently. 😏 This series is full of action, plot twists and spice! 10 out of 10…Highly recommend!
Thanks to Must Love Audio and CD Reiss for the ALCs!
I am thrilled to share my thoughts on "Deep Thrall," the exhilarating second installment of the Immortal Empire series! To fully appreciate this captivating narrative, I highly recommend reading "Blood Bride" first. From the very first page, this enchanting vampire romance captured my heart. I truly appreciated how CD Reiss thoughtfully included a recap of the previous book; it was incredibly helpful in refreshing my memory of "Blood Bride." The exploration of Carmine's transformation into a vampire and his intriguing backstory added so much depth to the story. Without revealing any spoilers, I can assure you that Luna and Carmine’s journey continues to be utterly engrossing. The book not only answers key questions but also leaves you yearning for more! Carmine's character development truly impressed me, and the beautiful portrayal of his bond with Luna is simply stunning. Their chemistry radiates through every scene, and I found myself growing even fonder of Carmine as he evolves into a more intricate character. Meanwhile, Luna’s empowerment is genuinely inspiring. The cliffhanger ending will undoubtedly leave you eagerly awaiting the next book! As the story unfolds, prepare to fall even deeper for Luna and Carmine amidst the surprising twists and turns. I'm eager for the next installment!
The outstanding duet performance by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke in this engaging audiobook stands out! Samantha’s gentle, soft voice beautifully captures Luna’s passionate and determined nature as she deepens her connection with Carmine. Jason’s deep, resonant tone brings Carmine’s love for Luna and his relentless quest for purpose to life. His authentic Italian accent adds a charming touch that enriches the listening experience. The talented cast, including Rose Dioro, Dane Anderson, Scott Turner Schofield, and Marcus Rothenberg, brings various side characters to life with impressive accents and voices. Their combined talent creates an immersive, cinematic experience that truly merits recognition.
Deep Thrall is the 2nd book in the Immortal Empire series. I actually thought this was a duet, but it looks like there should be more to their story with the reveal at the end of this book. You must read the first book before picking up this one. It picks up right after the crazy cliffhanger of book one.
I really appreciated the recap CD Reiss did of the first book to refresh me on all the craziness that happened in the Blood Bride. I also liked learning more about how Carmine was made into a vampire and exploring his past.
I don’t want to say too much in this review since it is the 2nd book and I don;t want to give anything away so I will say some of the basics, but I might be vague.
Luna has been left behind by Carmine while he is on his quest to get that special knife that should help heal him. Unfortunately, he left her completely under his thrall, and she is struggling with their separation. They both are wondering if their love is real or a product of the thrall and her powers when she previously looked inside him.
Their chemistry is off the charts, and their connection is undeniable. I really fell in love with Carmine in this book, and he was a more fleshed out character. It was great seeing Luna come into her power. I did feel like so much was left unresolved, and I got confused in a few places, but I am excited to see what comes next after that crazy ending.
🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
This audiobook had narration by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke, along with a full cast. It also featured Rose Dioro, Dane Anderson, Scott Turner Schofield, and Marcus Rothenberg. The full cast really brought this audiobook to the next level, and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to Must Love Audio for providing the ALC.
“He pulls my head to his and kisses me with his copper tongue. It tastes like pure, new love and nothing else. I have never tasted love without distraction, or ulterior motives, or insecurity.”
I’m once again gobsmacked by the Immortal Empire series from CD Reiss! I could not be pried away from the audiobook of Deep Thrall; every moment I had to pause or break for real life nonsense, I was itching to get back to it! Carmine and Luna’s epic love story continues with harrowing challenges, life-threatening evils, and spicy escapades. I was hooked from chapter one and am still unwell over that cliffhanger! Also, I did not have swooning over Laro on this year’s book bingo card, but here we are!
Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor dazzled (like a vampire sparkling in daylight) throughout this audio! Samantha’s reprisal of her role as Luna was magnificent; she brought Luna’s human naïveté and witchy ferocity to life beautifully. Jason will captivate you with his headphone-melting performance of Carmine; from the devastating backstory to his growly protectiveness of Luna, Jason’s portrayal of the infuriating and scorching hot vampire mafia don is incredible. Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson brought top tier performances to the booth (as they do) and added depth, passion, and wonderful characterizations to the story. Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg were new-to-me narrators and they were absolutely wonderful. Their cameos were fantastic! If you’re looking for an all-consuming audiobook experience with a phenomenal full cast and an enthralling love story, you need this in your ears now!
🎧 There is not enough gushing I can do about this cast. Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson are chameleons. The range they have in voices for secondary characters is amazing. Mr. Anderson takes out the arsenal of Italian men in his head. Samantha Brentmoor, the Queen of Sunshine, love her work and she cannot do wrong in my books. Jason Clarke's voice is my weakness but his performances blow my mind. Definitely King of Vampires. How can somebody be sardonic, delectable and menacing at the same time.
🎧 Continuing from "Blood Bride", which left me with lots of questions, I find myself very very grateful to Ms. Reid for including in her e-book a section of "What has gone before". It's been a year since book one after all.
🎧 I can't comment on the plot without giving away .. things .. and what I liked about this story is me going blind in it. It adds to the experience. I still like the vampire world she built. Although I might not have understand fully - I am drawn to the narration and don't pay attention to the details, totally my fault - the logistics of thrall-limina and all, I do enjoy the vibe. Loved the first part of the book, like having an origin story within a story.
🎧 The End. This is what happens when you avoid posts about a book until you read it. Book 3? Damn.
❗️ Disclaimer : My rants, ramblings, and incoherent thoughts might be considered spoilers by some. Also, often, I do not read trigger warnings or blurbs.
🎧 I knew that Jason Clarke could sing. Listening to him in Italian though. So cool. Also, the way he can make his voice chuckle and be seductive is *chef's kiss*. Not to mention the frustration when trying to operate a mobile phone.
I’m wondering how I read this book so quickly and why couldn’t I put it down!
Ok part of the answer is the author, don’t tell her but I think I was in thrall and I had no option; the other part is these characters, Carmine, Luna, Serafina and oh so many others from book one and new characters from this book keep you on your toes!
We get the best character backgrounds, most especially Carmine’s and oh my lord his was heart wrenching! I can’t beleive that Carmine has made it into my top 10 book boyfriends (yes, I know I might get bitten but it will be worth it)!
I loved learning more; not just about Luna but also her mother and then there are the decendents of the Five Kings (of which Carmine is one) and this story line! So much goes on and you may want to make notes cause readers this story is jam-packed with words, impending wars and strega’s oh…I almost forgot the werewolves!
For all that goes on believe it or not this book is not the last, because well……did I mention the impeding wars and Kings??? So Much Goes On!
And then there is the knife! hmmmmm
Oh course this means that those of us who fall into the “will read anything this author writes” group (are we in her Thrall?) are happy to see that there will be yet another book cause these characters are not done yet!
Next up, listening the the audio book…..all I can say is there’s STREGA’S and WEREWOLVES and VAMPIRE’S OH MY! and possibly a Demon or two.
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟/🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 Format: Audiobook - Multi-cast narration by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke and featuring Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson in supporting roles with cameo appearances by Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg Series / Standalone: Book two in The Immortal Empire series Tropes: Vampires, Mafia, Single Dad
Thanks to Must Love Audio, Lyric Audiobooks, and the author for this ALC - all opinions are my own
This is turning out to be such an epic story. The recap was a great way to start but I definitely wouldn’t rely on that alone. The first book is a must before starting this one. Carmine’s back story was so thorough and good and helps with understanding and connecting to his character. Luna, although in thrall, is dedicated to him and their cause, and fixing what she did at the end of book one. The addition of some characters were great for the plot and the story moved along well, even with the backstory added in, and that’s a testament to the skillful writing. There is almost non stop action and the scenes were so good I really felt like I was watching them play out on screen.
The audio was amazing!! Jason Clarke and Samantha Brentmoor are one of my dream teams for narrators but add in the rest of the multi-cast and this audio is a must-listen!! The emotions and action scenes really come to life in these performances!!
This book kept me on pins and needles almost from start to finish. Carmine’s backstory was captivating and heartbreaking. He was a man of morals throughout his life. And that part of his humanity is still evident in. I appreciated seeing his human qualities interwoven with his vampirism. Getting a front row seat into how he was sired was intense and gut wrenching. Luna is growing into her own. She’s developing more and learning more about her powers. I loved how quirky and sarcastic she is. But sometimes she had me shaking my head with some of her decisions. So much action takes place. Carmine looking for a knife with magical powers. All while trying to keep Luna safe. And Luna is craving to be able to make decisions and choices freely. Both of them clash together with who will ultimately be the deciding winner. But what is never waiving or in doubt is their chemistry. Their passion and lust is always simmering and on the surface all the time. The pull that’s between them is all consuming and strong as steel. Honestly this world Ms. Reiss has created has me enthralled and fascinated. The different beings and creatures, the humans and the witches all living simultaneously. Yeah what can go wrong with that combination lol. I’m looking forward to reading the next book. **4.5 stars**
The saga continues and after the thrilling ending of Blood Bride, I’ve been eagerly awaiting what was next for Luna and Carmine. My Kickstarter preorder for the stunning hardback has already been secured, but truthfully the audio is an absolutely irresistible treat. The multi-cast narration by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke and featuring Rose Dioro and Dane Anderson in supporting roles with cameo appearances by Scott Turner Schofield and Marcus Rothenberg is a spellbinding journey. The plot twists and turns and thickens, while Carmine and Luna steam up the page. With Jason and Samantha leading the way, this is a story you can really sink your teeth into. (And the puns keep coming…) Deep Thrall is book 2 in the Immortal Empire series, a vampire, big age gap, mafia romance that is dark and morally grey from start to finish.
I really enjoyed how Carmine and Luna both evolved throughout the story. Carmine becomes so much more than a ruthless capo as he falls in love with Luna despite thinking he was incapable of such feelings. Luna slowly starts realizing her powers and despite stumbling often, takes her bravery to get herself both in and out of trouble. She and Carmine couldn’t be more different, but they make so much sense together. She sees depths in him he didn’t even know he had. I also love how Luna doesn’t come across as a young and whiny character. She is inexperienced, underinformed, and at times rash, but she is easy to like. The overall story really picks up some depth in this second installment of the series. And while the ending will leave readers satisfied, it also leaves us with many questions remaining. I can’t wait to continue the series.
If book one didn't leave you wanting more, this one will.
It is filled with more information and action than you could ask for, but so much happens that you can find yourself asking if you're any farther forward after book two. But you are. Just a bit, but you are.
The book starts out with an amazing recap, but you would will absolutely need to read book one. The humour of this recap is everything!
The story itself is wild! Fuck if I knew left from right half the time. Ok, I did... but I didn't want to. I was in the thick of all the glamours and thralls and witchy magic that is CDReiss's writing. My poor husband had to sit and listen to me swear, gasp, giggle, and hold my breath whenever I was reading this beside him. It is jam packed!
The author very cleverly addresses some real world topics in such a matter of fact way, writing gender nonconforming, and powerful BIPOC characters into this stoy. These are things I've seen CDReiss speak passionately about on her socials and to see them so innocuously but powerfully included in a book was brilliant.
I cannot wait to get the audiobook of this in my earholes. Every time I read the word 'Snowbird' I heard it as it was narrated in book one. I'm very excited about the audiobook!
Deep Thrall (Immortal Empire Book 2) thrills and wows us with the twists and turns, danger, mystery, and passion. It picks up where Book 1, Blood Bride, left off on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. In this book, we get more of Carmine's backstory. It gives us a glimpse into his past and explains why he is the way he is. Luna is coming into her destiny. She's learning who she really is, and getting quite the backbone. We get answers to burning questions, but we are also left with more questions. There's non-stop action that leaves you glued to the pages. I was on the edge of my seat, unable to turn the pages fast enough.
C.D. Reiss is such an amazing storyteller. She weaves these complicated webs in her books that entertain and enthrall you. This book was intriguing. The series is addicting. I loved the twisted, dark plot. The characters are complex and multi-layered. I loved digging into their pasts and discovering their origins. There are so many secrets and lies. There's so much more to discover as we learn at the end of this book. This is not a standalone. You must read Book #1, Blood Bride, to understand what's going on with this book. This book also ends on a thrilling cliffhanger. I can't wait to see what happens next!!!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.
This is the second book in the Immortal Empire Series. You have to read the first book, Blood Bride, or you will be really lost. This book will pick up right where Blood Bride left off. If read that book and maybe don't remember your jaw hitting the floor with the ending, then you are in luck. There is a nice little section where CD Reiss has written a great summary to get you back to where we were when Blood Bride ended. Now I don't know that I should tell you anything about the plot of this book. I keep thinking and erasing sentences so that I don't say something that is a spoiler. I loved that in this book we got to see Luna not only came into her own, but she is also getting some help coming into the powers she has now. Carmine's moves cold also break her. It is not easy being trapped in the deepest thrall. He is staying one step ahead of his enemies but every kind of creature you can imagine are always plotting againt him. But he is holding on to his mortality to keep Luna safe. But his limit is being tested big time. Like I said there is so much going on in this book. I loved every single second of it and couldn't lay it down. Now I can't wait to have the third book in my hands.
Deep Thrall by C.D. Reiss is a compelling and intense romance that explores complex power dynamics and emotional vulnerability in a way that kept me deeply engaged. Reiss’s writing is raw and unflinching, delving into themes of control, trust, and surrender with a nuanced approach that goes beyond typical romance tropes.
The characters are richly developed, and their interactions are charged with tension and passion. I appreciated how the story balanced the darker elements with moments of tenderness and growth, making the relationship feel authentic and layered. The emotional depth and psychological complexity made this more than just a steamy read—it was thought-provoking and immersive.
While the intensity and some of the darker themes may not be for everyone, I found that they added to the story’s impact and made the characters’ journey all the more compelling. The pacing was generally strong, though there were moments where I wished for a bit more resolution in certain plot threads.
Overall, Deep Thrall is a powerful and provocative romance that earns a solid 4 stars from me. It’s a great pick for readers who enjoy emotionally charged stories with complex characters and a bold exploration of desire and control.
