This was very engrossing and kept me engaged the entire time with the mystery, but the ending was waaayyy too abrupt and kind of anticlimactic?? So like, the first 70% was solid but the end was so much of a let down that I cannot give it a higher rating than 2,5 stars, rounded up. Perhaps it could have been a bit longer with more lore regarding the supernatural phenomenon. And honestly, just... a different ending altogether xd
However, I still had a good time and the art was pretty. I liked that even though the general theme is very dark, there were quite a few funny moments and those moments didn't feel out of place.
idkkkkk
(my brain has been so tired that lately all i can read in my free time is manhwa apparently; i guess i have gotten over my "help picture and word at the same time" thing)
English Name - The Black Mirror by Muhwa (story) & Sugeun (art)
I'm honestly not sure what to rate this. The manhwa community said it was great so I binged it and was looking forward to some answers but I was left largely confused by it.
I'll give credit where credit is due - the horror, thriller aspects were really well done. The hallucinations that weren't really hallucinations, the voices, and the things in the mirrors - those were fucking creepy AF. Terrifying actually
However, the story itself and particularly the ending is just... unsatisfactory? underwhelming? confusing? Like.. huh? I don't quiet have the right words for it.
A lot of the reader comments are focused on the smut - which granted was hot - !!BUT!! If you take away the smut and the tension between these two, you are left with two psychos who should stay far far away from society. Basically, a people pleasing MC who has amnesia and must find a way to remember his past and connection with the ML, an ML with the most annoying mood swings and an weird supernatural ending that's just like... what??
Ps. If you were to ask me, I'd have preferred if the supernatural aspect wasn't there. Not sure how the story would have been structured then, but if the two were actual serial killers and their weird romance was based on a 'we are two fucked up people who serial kill other people together *with our actual hands*' type plot, I think I'd have liked that more
If you’re into psychological horror stories, this one fvking serves.
The ML, Jun, has no memories of his past esp his childhood days and he suffers from hallucinations and nightmares. When he accidentally meets the ML, Yeonwoo, while doing apartment hunting near his university area, he learns that he’s a childhood friend and he shares the same exact scar engraved on his palm. Jun doesn’t recognise him and for some reason, Yeonwoo is upset about this but he still ends up moving in to Yeonwoo’s place, to the infamous red house.
I love the art style, the lighting and the chilling background details, they give off all these dark and creepy vibes and the gore and the blood make the hairs on your skin rise. The disturbing panels in the dark room in the last few chapters are scary af and something I wouldnt dare be reading at night esp when all the lights are off. The dark room actually reminds me so much of the South Korean movie ‘The Forgotten’. Watching it all alone gave me the creep. Also, I want this manhwa to be adapted into a series or a movie.
I enjoy the mystery surrounding Jun and Yeonwoo, they do match each other’s freak. The smut scenes are hot and steamy but also give off this bone-chilling vibes at the same time.
This is such a scary read but really good I devour this in one sitting
This had such a great premise. Horror mirror people who can make real life human disappear but then the execution fell flat. The chemistry between the leads were there (although not as zingy as I would have liked), but it did feel like we go through 90% of the story rehashing the same thing over and over again, and then it just ends. No real explanation where the horror mirror people came from, no further explanation on how the main character came to have those powers to just kill people as they please.
Extremely lacking in plot. Good for the suspense, but not for much else.
