When my hallucinations while falling asleep and waking up turn from creepy crawling things making their way up my blanket to a cute purple demon who won't stop eating my food and stealing my hoodies, I can't decide if he's a problem or something I hoping isn't only a figment of my imagination. Helluci-dating is book one in Monster Match season two and ends with a sweet, fluffy HEA.
Ashlynn Mills is a Latina from Texas who currently resides in Missouri with her family running a farm. She enjoys reading and writing all genres about people falling in love.
Elias's narcolepsy caused a crash that killed his brother. Since his death, he lives with guilt and has nightmares of the accident. In comes our cutesy, purple, skirt-wearing sleep paralysis demon. This was sweet! I loved all the things they did in Elias's dreams. Reading, carnivals, and that thing with his tail. 🤭 I was FLABBERGASTED finding out what caused the crash.
Brodys is a hoe. I hope his pillow is warm on both sides. No gas when he's running late. Missing remote when his favorite show is on. I hope the toilet paper rips wiping Taco Bell shits.. Ole stanky fingers. He was godawful. How could he even come around after that and act like it's no biggy.
2.5/5. This was a great premise, but it just didn't quite work for me. There were definitely aspects I enjoyed and I'd like to try this author again, but there were some aspects I didn't love, too. First, the characters. I really enjoyed Arien. He was like a ray of sunshine, so positive and upbeat and kind. I also enjoyed Elias. He was broken from grief, but slowly became his old self, which was a fun, caring guy.
Unfortunately, I was really confused throughout the entire book. How did this sleep paralysis demon thing work exactly? I have a lot fo questions regarding that specifically. Also, things happened fast. So fast that it wasn't quite believable. I didn't really feel them falling for each other.
Overall, great concept and fun characters, but it didn't quite hit for me.
Most of the time when you think of demons...you think evil...not cute, adorable, sweet, snacksize and purple. Wellllll this is Arien...a sleep demon who is helping Elias with his terrible nightmares sparred on by grief. I really enjoyed this sweet with a good amount of heat romance. Along with the grief and betrayal, we get a lot of happy, sunshiny times that are shared between the two. Love, acceptance and closure...gives them a satisfying HEA. Very nice monster romance. I recommend!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Set in the Monster Match world, Ashlynn Mills latest book is about a sleep paralysis demon and the human he visits in dreams.
Elias has had a rough time with sleep, always plagued by things from his past. But Arien is just the one to fix that. Arien is just adorable. While many sleep demons feed on nightmares and negative emotions, Arien just genuinely wants to make people feel better and sleep well.
The story itself is sweet and fluffy, but still full of the heat that Mills always brings to her stories. It was a quick read, and Arien kept me smiling the whole time.
Halluci-Dating A Demon is part of the multi author Monster Match season two series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the rest of the series. This is the story of Elias a human and Arien a demon. After an accident Elias's life gets messed up and Arien helps him get through some of the harder things. I loved these two so much. This was a quick read for me and it put a smile on my face. I would definitely recommend this book and series.
4,5 stars Halluci-dating a Demon by Ashlynn Mills is part of the second season of the Monster Match series by multiple authors. This is the story of Arien and Elias. I loved their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.
DNF @61% ... and I am *really* bummed to give up on this one. I very much enjoyed the first season of this multi-author series and the premise of this sounds utterly adorable. The execution, though? 😖 It's so... ugh, I can't even articulate well why it doesn't work for me, other than the pacing is really weird and the story just feels disjointed. Like, I can totally follow along... but it feels like I have to make an effort to do that versus letting the storytelling carry me along, and I'm still sort of... I don't know, inferring? Filling in some blanks that the actual narrative leaves out?
Anyway, it's just not working from me and when I finally faced the fact that reading it feels like more of a slog than enjoyment, no matter how cute Arien is, I decided to cut my losses and move on. ☹️
Halluci-dating a Demon by Ashlynn Mills is part of the Monster Match Season 2 series by various authors. It is the story of a man who has gone through extreme trauma, the demon who helps him, and on the way they fall in love. Elias was involved in a car accident that killed his brother who he was very close to. After that he had trouble sleeping because when he did demons would enter his dreams and have him relive the accident and see his brother dead over and over which would leave him traumatized and sleep deprived. It was only after it happened that he sought help and found out he had narcolepsy, but he still blamed himself for what happened. He pulled away from his family because he thought they hated him and his boyfriend Brody also left him after while. His sister Amy still had contact with him and tried to have him seek more help and to be there for him but he just sank deeper into his thoughts and depression. He owned a coffee shop in town but was gruff with his employees and customers, even though they still liked him. Arien was a sleep paralysis demon but different from the others. He only wanted to help people by being kind and helpful and had shared that he was still able to get what he needed for his energy when this happened with Dr. Peterson who was experimenting in this area. He had done so well that he was giving him permission to go to the human world and work with some people who could really use his help in this manner. His first patient was Elias. He is able to enter their dreams when they fall asleep and then he is summoned to them and can manipulate their dreams. The first time he entered Elias’s dreams he took him fishing at a lake like he used to go to with his brother. Everything was so much more relaxing and beautiful than when the other demons had visited him and caused him so much pain he could hardly believe it. Arien continued to visit him through his sleep and was bringing him so much peace that Elias began to believe he might be real. This came true when Arien visited his friend Kyvian, an incubus, at his bookstore and they went to the coffee shop where Elias saw and talked to him. They continued to see each other, both in his dreams where he couldn’t move or talk but could experience all that Arien was offering, and at his apartment after work hours and learned so much about each other. But Arien’s visa only allowed him to stay until 9:00 each night and then he had to return through the portal to his base. The more they saw each other they more their attraction grew until they kissed and then had some hot love scenes whenever they were together. Things were going so well that Elias was getting less and less traumatized over the accident that he started going through his brother’s things that he had stored in boxes in his closet. It is there that he found a big secret that his brother and Brody had been keeping from him and he finally remembered what had happened just before the accident. This was huge and changed how he felt and brought him even more healing. It also brought him closer to his family and when Brody tried to get back with him he realized he loved Arien and wanted no one but him. Arien’s work also brought him a visa so he could see Elias whenever he wanted and they soon declared their love. This is a very interesting story as it has demons that enter dreams and can cause havoc or happiness. The monsters are able to live with the humans, although there is still some prejudice. Elias is so broken and doesn’t think he can ever be happy or be with someone again. Arien is just what he needs, both with his caring and bringing him peace, and also that he is able to find love when he never thought that could happen. Amy, Kyvian, and Brody played a big part in the story with two being very helpful and the other not so much. I recommend this book especially if you like stories involving monsters, a broken man, and the demon who is able to save him, bring him back to enjoying his life again, and then fall in love with him so they both can look forward to a happy future together.
1st person, present tense, dual PoV Arien, paralysis demon Elias Salazar, human
This story is part of the multi-author Monster Match series (season two), which takes place in a shared world, but it stands alone well, however the connection to the Monster Match app is tenuous at best.
This was a really cute story, but I struggled with the writing style, where the reader is often left reading between the lines which personally pulls me out of the story, sometimes quite literally as I need to Google information which could easily have been provided.
In the author's note the author mentions having narcolepsy, which I can only extrapolate means that she is intimately aware of many of the facets of the disorder, putting her at an advantage over the average reader so perhaps she takes for granted things that are common knowledge. I struggled to understand the rules of when, how, and why Arien (or other demons) could visit Elias. It was confusing and could have easily been cleared with with a few throwaway comments either in one of their internal monologues or as dialogue between them or even other characters.
Events seem to occur off-page that are then referenced later and readers are left putting together context clues regarding the world building. I don't understand how Elias was even on Dr. Peterson's radar in the first place (to suggest him as a patient for Arien to test his theory about feeding on) and have no idea why Arien would actually be granted a work visa to work in the human realm when he doesn't need to be in it to feed from humans in the first place. I'm still not sure about what the deal with the sleeping/dream dust is exactly, and how Arien feeds/gains energy feels is a little mysterious. So many questions.
I know with novels of this sort a great deal of suspension of disbelief is necessary, but that doesn't excuse the author from attempting even basic character development, world building or explanation... We are over three quarters of the way through the book when Elias mentions to his sister that Arien can visit him "during cataplexy and REM episodes" - good to know. Apparently Elias is Mexican-American, which is only really disclosed in the author's note as he doesn't even speak a solitary word of Spanish until chapter 14. It also would have been nice to understand Arien's experiment more fully and better understand his place in the human world going forward, working with other subjects and how that would look while dating Elias.
All that aside, this story had a great premise. The hurt/comfort was next level and I was fully invested in seeing Arien help Elias elude the nightmares brought on by other sleep paralysis demons and gain some semblance of peace. I wish more had come of the revelation that Arien was a real being and not just a figment of Elias's subconscious, it was rather anticlimactic. I loved that Arien's steadfast presence helped bring Elias back to the land of the living and helped him stop hating himself and viewing himself as unworthy of anything good. It was a process so gradual you don't even realize it's happening. Elias's reunion with his family was nice, though I wish a little more had been aired out on page in that regard to rebuild their relationships from after the accident. I adored Arien's obsession with sugar and candy and everything sweet and how Elias indulged him in that. The spicy scenes were well done and really added to the narrative. Some of the places and dreamscapes they visited were quite interesting and I enjoyed the supporting characters, I'm hoping some of them will appear in other books of the series.
I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.
Monster Match Season 2 is on a roll! Halluci-dating A Demon is the story of a paralysis demon and his hope to help those with sleeping disorders.
Elias Salazar has narcolepsy and cataplexy. He wasn’t diagnosed until after a horrific car accident killed his brother, put him in a coma, and hurt his boyfriend. After he started healing, he knew he couldn’t stay near Brody and his family and moved away starting a new and different life. He couldn’t run away from his grief and guilt though and his dreams tortured him.
Arien knew Elias was being haunted not only by his guilt but by demons like himself who fed on the pain and fear of humans dreams. Arien had a plan to help Elias heal. He didn’t expect the connection he felt to grow between them. Slowly, Arien was able to help Elias look forward to life, to want happiness again. Would their connection keep them together or would their own fears tear them apart?
Oh my geez!! First off, yay for a Hispanic MC!! I loved seeing Spanish being spoken in this story even if I had to look some of it up. This is my first story that had narcolepsy involved and it made the story even more compelling for me. My heart hurt for Elias as he grieved his brother’s death and his part in it. I admired that even though he could have induced more fear, Arien used his powers for the good of others. That twist at the end was the dun dun dun like in Law & Order. I totally enjoyed this book. Everything from how Elias interacted with his sister and family to Arien’s Incubus friend Kyvian who owned the bookstore. There were so many good characters in this book like Sal the Uber driver and Ian the barista. I am so looking forward to more of this series!
I haven't come across many books where an MC has narcolepsy, hallucinations, and sleep paralysis, and this one really showed what it's like for someone to deal with those conditions day in and day out.
Elias is dealing with a lot of grief, loss, and guilt. When himself, his brother, and his boyfriend got into an accident with him behind the wheel, and when his brother didn't survive, but he did, he's been overwhelmed by guilt ever since that dreadful day. He has constant night terrors and hallucinations playing that awful day over and over again in a myriad of different scenarios, that's causing him a severe amount of anguish and pain... When he starts getting visits by a person who wears his hoodies, have charms in their hair, and loves eating his candy, he starts seeing that maybe there is another way to live outside of the guilt... The journey him and Arien have to go on is a long road, but together they find their way forward.
I love Arien! He's a bundle of joy, and adorableness! I love that he's on a mission to spread brightness and cheer, and how he's so determined to try to brighten people's nightmares. His obsession with candy and sweet stuff is so cute, and his love for Elias shines through the page. I adore these two together, they compliment one another in such a great way. Elias is more of a grumpy storm cloud (understandably so) and Arien is a ray of sunshine shining through the darkness that surrounds Elias.
While I did like the premise of the story and thought it was really unique, I found myself having a difficult time becoming fully immersed in the story.. the pacing just felt a bit off to me, but other than that I did enjoy this story.
Halluci-Dating A Demon by Ashlynn Mills is part of the multi-author paranormal romance series, Monster Match, Season 2.
It’s a sweet romantic story made all the more interesting by the author’s use of her own history with narcolepsy to endow one of her main characters with this illness and have her other MC be the nightmare demon that is the one that helps him with his nightmares but adjust to his illness.
Elias, the human whose life is being consumed by guilt ridden nightmares and his narcolepsy and Arien, a dream demon who has been assigned to help Elias are a delight. Arien, especially comes across as a cotton candy ball of sunshine, taking a deep joy in everything on this “side” of the things. For me, he made the story.
Elias was interesting but his history was confusing. Did he forget about the accident? Was it something else? How was he able to recover? That left a few questions in the plot.
But the romance was sweet and the couple were interesting in their elements.
This series is always worth reading as it’s going to have some good stories and fascinating aspects to the characters. Grab them up.

Arien was nothing but the sweetest Sleep Paralysis Demon ever. All he wants to be able to help people. He especially wants to help Elias who is struggling a whole lot.
This book had me in all kinds of 🎢 emotions. It took me for a ride. I never thought i could dislike someone who was no longer in this world. Elias brother was a real piece of work.

Halluci-Dating A Demon follows Elias, a man deeply traumatized by a car accident that killed his brother. Struggling with sleep deprivation and recurring nightmares caused by demons, he sinks into depression, alienating his family and pushing away his boyfriend, Brody. His sister Amy tries to support him, but he remains withdrawn. Elias owns a coffee shop, where he is distant but still liked by others.
Enter Arien, a unique sleep paralysis demon who wants to help people, unlike others of his kind. After being granted permission to interact with humans, his first patient is Elias. Arien visits Elias in his dreams, offering him peace and relaxation, helping him heal from the trauma. Over time, Elias starts to believe in Arien’s kindness, and their relationship deepens both in dreams and in the waking world. Their bond grows into love, and Elias begins to recover emotionally, even facing painful truths about his brother and Brody.
As Arien’s visa is extended, they can be together more, and Elias finds happiness and healing. The story explores themes of trauma, healing, and unexpected love between a broken man and a caring demon. With the support of friends and family, Elias learns to embrace life again and builds a future with Arien, culminating in a loving relationship.
I’ve got to say I enjoyed this, a real sweet story of a guy called Elias who is really struggling with life. Whilst driving his car he fell asleep at the wheel, and sadly his brother died from this incident. Elias didn’t wanting anyone around him, and that included his boyfriend who was in the car at that time. And this is where our little purple man called Arien comes into play. I say man, but he is a monster and he decides that he could do better for Elias by giving him good dreams. But there is a connection between these two and it isn’t long before they take the relationship a bit further. These two are just so perfect for one another. I found this a really cute story that has a twist at the end that I worked out earlier on, but was not 100% sure. These two definitely have chemistry, a strong bond, a strong connection and passion that is off the charts. I was so happy reading this book.
I got this Arc from the author and this is me, leaving my honest review.
“He smells good too. Like sugar and . . . so much life. Flowers, trees, the sky, and fresh rain. Reminding me of a rainbow, he’s a promise of good things to come. But he can’t be real. He’s a figment of my imagination like everything else whenever I’m somewhere caught between awake and sleeping. Only fear isn’t tickling the back of my neck with him here. My heart rate is more regulated than it’s been in a long time when I first wake up.
It was so great to be back into this world!! And this book was everything thing I was hoping from the title alone.
Elias the human MC who suffers from narcolepsy which caused a fatal car accident that killed his twin brother. His pain is palpable and I was his cheerleader from the beginning. He unfortunately feels so much guilt from his brothers death and has not worked on his healing leaving him susceptible to paralysis demons feeding on his fear and pain, leaving him exhausted and broken.
Then enters Arien a paralysis demon himself that is working with the human government trying to prove that these demons can feed themselves on good dreams as well and no need to torment. He truly believes in this cause and hopes it leads to him getting permanent citizenship in the human world.
I don’t want to give anymore away but this story is just so lovely. Both MC’s are total cinnamon rolls, Arien is sunshine and watching Elias heal and unravel truths is both painful and beautiful!
I’m so excited to continue the second season of the Monster Match series! I want this world to continue forever!!
I just love Ashlynn's books, no matter from what angle she is writing... this one especially hit home cause she wrote from her personal experiences. Elias was severely damaged in all ways: mentally, physically and emotionally as the result of a car accident that killed his twin and hurt his fiancé. He blamed himself profusely, even though he really wasn't at fault. His memories of the night were somewhat stilted, but nonetheless, he took all the blame. Suffering from nightmares, narcolepsy and sleep paralysis, he thought he deserved it all... until a purple little demon saved him from himself. Arien was just what Elias needed. Elias wasn't totally cured, but he found himself again and by a breakthrough, released he wasn't totally to blame. Another successful HEA.
4.5 Stars Elias and Arien were great together. I loved the pull between these two. While Arien was all for getting to know his human patient, he tried to hold back his growing feelings. Elias is surviving after losing his brother and being diagnosed with narcolepsy but he can’t help that his purple demon has a way of making him feel again. These two are sweet and steamy together while also accepting and understanding each other. These is a little bit of drama and maybe some assumptions made but these two have wonderful commination and they are able to get an HEA. I am really looking forward to more form Ashlynn soon.
I received an e-book copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Struggling with hallucinations during sleep, Elias's nightmares are unexpectedly replaced by a quirky, food-loving purple demon called Arien who also takes a liking to his hoodies. Torn between viewing him as an annoyance or secretly hoping he's real, the situation blurs the lines between imagination and reality, creating a unique and whimsical conundrum.
This was a sweet story as the lines blurred between dreams and reality as they found ways to communicate with each other in real life. There were a few twists in the story as we discovered the truth about the accident that started Elias's journey into self-recrimination. It could have done with some more detail about thoughts and feelings around the accident and the cause. This was an MM story with mature content.
4 star reading experience, 3-3.5 star writing/quality I feel??
thoughts n feelings: -narcolepsy rep!!! -really cute premise and very fun execution -the magic system in this was VERY confusing and I still don't really get it tbh -writing needed a LOT of refining -- MANY mistakes and inconsistencies or confusing wording -maybe a bit silly at times but idc -I literally knew the twist was coming but it was still SUCH a gut-punch.
Arien is a demon working with a Doctor to visit patients with sleep disorders and help them, not through fear or anxiety but with comfort and safety. He visits Elias and finds his person. Elias has narcolepsy causing sleep paralysis triggered by his guilt feelings. Elias think Arien is a dream, a dream that's perfect for him. Elias is filled with guilt, insecurity and lack of self-worth. Arien is a ray of sunshine to lighten him up. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.
First thing is first, I love the title of the book. Second, Ashlynn Mills once again had me deep in my feelings. I Devoured this book, I could not put it down. I needed this fluffy book. I loved everything about this book. I love the way Ashlynn Mills writes characters that have type of disability. She shines light on what a person can struggle with. I was able to feel how much of herself she wrote in it. This may honestly be one of my favorite books from Ashlynn Mills (Cartel Wars is still my series of all time I though
I love the Monster Match stories, they always have an edge of cuteness to them which was slapped all over this book. You feel bad for Elias, torturing himself for years, feeling like he was to blame, but the truth....wow....did not see that coming. Brody deserves all the bad things. Arien was just full on adorable, head to toe, not just personally, but professionally too. Hope they continue the Monster Match universe for many years to come.

Halluci-dating A Demon is in the Monster Match season 2 series. This one is a departure from Ashlynn's usual dark style, and I loved it!! Elias suffers from cataplexy, which is like a paralysis while still awake. This developed for him after a very personal and traumatic event. Arien is a "demon" (but like, the sweetest demon ever?) who is only trying to help Elias during his sleep paralysis. Of course a mutual attraction develops. I really loved how sweet and fluffy this one was! If you're looking for a lighter read that still has heat and also a unique story, this one is it!
I loved Arien and Elias.Elias has weird sleep problems because of disorder and he suddenly falls asleep.Arien just wants to help people get through the dreams peacefully and with happy memories.Arien isn't life every other demon he doesn't like scaring anyone he likes making people smile.Elias was being tortured by other demons after his brother died so he kept blaming himself.Arien wasn't supposed to fall in love with Elias but he did.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I adored Arien! He was just a sweet little purple guy who just wanted to do nice things for others. He was a misfit of a demon which was a good thing. Once Arien and Elias interact he immediately becomes Elia's entire world. Arien is able to care for Elias and his sleeping disorder by chasing his other demons away. These two were cute in their own special way. Oh, and I love this cover! Perfect fit!
I did not expect this book to have such complex characters and background. Elias blames himself for his brother's death even though falling asleep at the wheel was not in his control. I blame the doctor honestly, he kept pushing a treatment that wasn't working instead of actually analyzing the situation and treating the condition properly. Alien is so sweet and he brings back the person Elias was before but Elias is still healing. They are so good together.
This was so beyond cute. Loved how Arien and Elias got their HEA. Also, I really wanted to eat a bunch of candy while reading this… should have bought some, but I kinda read it too fast.
Really hoping some side characters get their own stories.
Highly recommend.
