The Reyes Siblings #2

The Odds of Happily Ever After

Rate this book
All bets are off when Little Miss Sunshine and the grump learn to play nice.

Luna Reyes moved to the US with a dream: to prove herself to her family. When her older sister returns to Manila, Luna is determined to get through college on her own, despite her parents’ doubts and her insecurities. She doesn’t need a keeper—especially not her sister’s best friend. Not when he’s been a jerk to her since they met.

Gabe Martins has one goal: to build a stable life for himself. He has no patience for relationships—except when it comes to his best (and only) friend. So even though he wants nothing to do with Luna, he considers it his duty to check in on her. Sterling’s too small a town not to run into her anyway.

One text turns into a phone call, and soon, they’re going on a road trip without killing each other. It turns out he’s got a sweet side she always wanted, and she’s the bright spot he never thought he needed.

But with their goals at stake, will they risk it all for a chance at true love?

The Odds of Happily Ever After is a dislike to friends to lovers contemporary romance with a simmering slow burn and a dash of spice. It is the second book in the Reyes Siblings series but can be read as a standalone.

A book with sizzling chemistry between the MCs. I absolutely adored Luna and related to her struggles. I also loved Gabe and the way he slowly fell for her. I just loved this book. For the love story, the character arcs, and the absolute love poured onto the pages.

I’m always a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope. Gabe seriously stressed me out in the first few chapters like, for real. I wanted to shake him! But then he started showing how much he actually cares for Luna, and ugh, the kilig was real. Their banter? Chef’s kiss. So good.

Major props to Gabe for finally letting go of his emotional baggage. That trauma really did a number on him, and it totally explained why he came off as cold and distant at first. But the fact that he worked through it? Love that character growth. And don’t even get me started on how he fixed things with his Papa, that was heartwarming.

Now Luna? Luna is such a strong girl. She carried so much on her own, especially with the whole middle child struggle. I genuinely felt for her, especially when she poured her heart out and her Papa still didn’t see her efforts. Like, ouch. He just kept comparing her to Ate Tala and Alonzo, and it broke my heart. But Luna being Luna, she stood her ground and made sure her Papa knew she was doing her best even if he didn’t always see it. That takes guts.

Their relationship is the ultimate slow burn, but trust me, it's so worth the wait. When they finally got to the point where they were sure of each other? My heart! So satisfying.

I haven’t read Anj Miranda before but damn I’m a fan! I didn’t want to put this down!

Gabe- a broody, serious, professional at all times tries to stop himself from falling in love with Luna- a light, cheerful, happy, laid back college student. Their battle between walking the line of professor / student and friend to lover is 🤌🏼🤌🏼. Luna makes you want to be the person she is. Quick to forgive, smart, a good friend and follows her dreams.

The odds of happily ever after is a book I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a light hearted, fun read!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy and happy to leave an honest review

📚✨ Book Review: The Odds of Happily Ever After by Anj Miranda ✨📚

Are you ready for a slow-burn romance that keeps you on your toes until the last page?

The Odds of Happily Ever After by Anj Miranda delivers all the feels in a delightful enemies-to-lovers, grumpy x sunshine romance. This ARC was an absolute treat!

✨ Tropes You'll Love:

Grumpy x Sunshine: The tension between these two is chef’s kiss!

Dislike to Friends to Lovers: Watching the icy barriers melt is such a satisfying experience.

He Falls First: Seriously, isn’t that the best part? 🥺

Sister’s Best Friend: Ah, the complicated family dynamics make this even more fun to read.

Student x Professor (but not hers!): No awkward power imbalance here, just a fun twist on the classic trope.

Friendship and Family Dynamics: It’s not just about the romance; there’s so much heartwarming depth with the side characters.

Dual POV: Getting into both of their heads made this story even richer!

Professor Gabe 🔥—he’s HOT. Tall, latino, brooding, and with that perfect touch of authority that makes you swoon! The tension between him and Luna is off the charts, and watching him soften as his feelings develop is so satisfying.

And Luna? 💗 She’s so expressive and full of life, making her the perfect sunshine to his grump. Whether she’s standing her ground or showing vulnerability, you can’t help but fall in love with her character. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the way they push each other's buttons is pure romance gold.

The slow burn was sooooo slow (and I’m not complaining!), but once things heat up, it's worth every moment. If you’re a fan of all the classic rom-com tropes with a twist, this book is a must-read!

📖 Our hero is a professor (not hers though, thank goodness 😅), and their chemistry was undeniable. There’s so much to love, from the playful banter to the unexpected feelings.

I wanna do this review properly but let me just start with: OH MY GODDDD??????

The Odds of Happily Ever After is as addictive as romance gets. I mean, the banter, the enemies-to-lovers arc, the I-hate-everyone-but-her dynamic, the slowest of slow burns? This felt like it was made for me. I can’t remember the last time I stayed up and lost track of time reading a romance.

What makes this book so good are all the small details littered throughout. The blue slippers? The blue slippers!! If small details was a love language, it would be mine, and this book would be my bible.

Loved this beyond explanation! (I actually could explain more but this is not an essay.) Seriously cannot recommend enough.

Thank you so much to Anj Miranda for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Luna has only ever felt like she lived in the shadow of her older sister, Tala. Luna—moon, whose light is merely a reflection of that from the sun. Or so she thinks until she meets Gabe, a professor and investment consultant, who tells her she reminds him of the phrase "to the moon". Used in the industry to denote something that "exceeds expectations and blows everyone away". So poetic.

I dove into this without reading the first book but I enjoyed and understood the story just as well. I liked the self-awareness it exhibited as it faced head-on the valid critiques of age gap and student-and-professor relationships and showed how they can be done right. And of course, the Filipino rep 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭, hello?? We as a community are so criminally underrepresented in the romance genre that recognizing Filipino words here already made me feel kilig, it's kinda pathetic lol.

This was a very cute read. Slow burn, sister’s best friend, enemies to lovers, age gap (small), multi-cultural, grumpy-sunshine. It hits a lot of my favorite tropes, is well written and I very much enjoyed the witty banter. Gabe has a past that clouds how he sees Luna, and since their first meeting, he has viewed her through the lens of his past trauma. Luna is sweet, hardworking and adjusting to life in the U.S. without her sister.

They find that they are able to help each other overcome their individual challenges and through this process begin to fall. It was very slow burn but had a nice payoff for sure once they got there. It was great to be able to walk through the journey with the characters. Overall, very sweet and fun book.

Thanks to the author, Anj Miranda, for the ARC!

“This isn’t my first time being sick on my own. But … It was nice to have you here.”

“Did it count as faking when you were striving to be someone you weren’t.”

“Maybe I couldn’t tell her what I wanted to. That didn’t mean I couldn’t show her instead.”

“You are a strong independent woman. You don’t need a man. But just because I didn’t need a man didn’t mean I couldn’t want one.”

“The world could have crashed and burned around us and I wouldn’t have noticed. Forget about reaching the moon—he’d launched me clear over it. And I never wanted to come back down.”

“It was a reminder that some things would always be beyond my understanding. It was also a reminder that the lack of absolute certainty shouldn’t stop me from pursuing what truly mattered.”

“I realized it was stupid of me to care so much about other people’s perceptions of me when I was hurting someone who mattered more to me than their approval.”

~*•*~

Only the blind would fail to see the undeniable tension between Luna and Gabe in the first installment of this series. Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Initially, I was put off by the age gap, especially since Luna isn't even in her 20s at the start. But Gabe won me over completely. He’s such a gentleman with her and that made all the difference.

Luna is a force to be reckoned with. She’s bubbly, relatable, and has the kind of strength you don’t see often in characters her age. But beneath that cheerful exterior, she’s an insecure girl, shaped by her family’s dynamics. Some may chalk it up to the "middle child syndrome" but Luna proves she’s so much more than that. She stands up for what she believes in - whether it's her passion for fashion or her growing love for Gabe.

Gabe, on the other hand, is like steel wrapped in human form. He's someone who takes everything seriously, especially his plans for the future. He’s a man who avoids connections, preferring to steer clear of any complications. His ultimate goal is a secure, successful future, and nothing seems to shake that resolve. Given his traumatic childhood, you can't really blame him for that. Though, I’ll admit, he does come off as a bit of an asshole at first.

The dynamic between Luna and Gabe is one of the things I loved most. Luna, despite her youth, is mature beyond her years and she understands the struggles Gabe faces. Gabe, despite his initial reluctance, starts to prioritize Luna - something she had always doubted because of her insecurities. Together, they complement each other so well, bringing out the best in each other, even in the face of their individual flaws and past scars.

And let’s not forget about Gabe who is totally swoon-worthy, the word doesn't even begin to cover it. His actions, small and grand, speak so much volume. I mean, These moments? They’re proof of a man who truly pays attention.

And when Gabe finally comes to terms with how much Luna means to him? That moment? That realization? It sealed the deal for me.

But let’s not forget about Luna. She has this way of caring for Gabe that feels so natural, so effortless. The things she does for him - sometimes small, sometimes huge, mean the world to him. The way Luna loves Gabe makes me melt. It’s pure, it’s selfless, and it made my heart ache in the best possible way.

~*•*~

Overall, this book pulled on my heartstrings in a way that was raw and intense. It made me want to love with the same depth and authenticity that Luna and Gabe share. It’s a journey of growth, trust, and vulnerability - and I’m here for all of it.

This wholesome and heartwarming romance follows Luna, a college freshman who recently moved to the U.S. for good to be independent and to prove to her family that she can make it on her own. Enter Gabe, college professor and a successful investment adviser focused on building a stable life, finds himself grudgingly agreeing to look after Luna, his best friend’s sister.

As Luna navigates her independency while keeping up with school and balancing her friendships and family life, she finds herself having to keep her long-time crush and budding feelings in check as Gabe, ever so grumpy, is slowly showing his soft side.

THINGS I LOVED:

Everything about the romance - The love that Luna and Gabe shares makes them better people not just for each other but for their individual growths and life goals. They’re very different, yet always try to strike the perfect balance. I loved that the romance was not entirely at the forefront but was friendship that’s at the center. It showed how the main characters slowly realized their feelings for each other and the implications these may have for them. The romance actually starts to pick up midway through the book.

Well-rounded,realistic, and self-aware characters - I know that sometimes, romance books are an escape and don’t always have to be realistic. And I agree. But sometimes, I crave for the realism and how I can possibly relate to the characters. The author did such an amazing job in keeping these characters grounded in reality, showing how flawed and hurt people can still handle things maturely with the right amount of understanding and introspection.

Balanced and compelling writing - I’m not one to be all up for the miscommunication trope, but it was used effectively in this one. Gabe and Luna weren’t always in the same page, but somehow learned to truthfully talk about their pasts and their fears about the future.

The quick and funny banter between characters- It’s a huge feat to not make me cringe at the “kilig” moments and cheesy lines. Here are some examples:

“My heart stopped. Or maybe it started beating for the first time. I loved this woman. Unexpected or not, improper or not, I did.”

“Forget about reaching the moon—he’d launched me clear over it. And I never wanted to come back down.”

The realistic portrayal uniquely Filipino/Asian dynamic of proving your worth, being compared to your siblings, the pressure to make practical choices and be successful in life. Here are some hard-hitting lines that’s super relatable:

“Everything I’d achieved didn’t seem to matter because someone else had done it all before me, better than me. Ate was the standard I measured myself up against since the day I realized she could do so many things I couldn’t.”

“If you wanted to study more, why didn’t you choose something practical?” Papa asked.”

“I know you’re an adult now but, as a parent, it’s hard to not worry. No matter how old you are, a part of me will always see you as my little girl, even if I try not to.”

If you’re into the these romance book tropes, then you definitely need to read this:

💛 grumpy, protective, patient MC x sunshine, sassy, highly independent FMC

💛 dual POVs

💛 reaaaaally slow burn with just the right amount of spice 🌶️

💛 dislike to friends to lovers

💛 professor x student (but not his student hehe) + 9-year age gap

💛 MC is FMC’s sister’s best friend 👀

💛 focus on strong family and friendship dynamics

Highly recommend this one! Instant 5 stars ⭐️

I was given the beautiful opportunity to receive a ARC by author Anj Miranda, for her latest upcoming release-
(The Odds Of Happily Ever After)
The second book in The Reyes Siblings series.
Anj Miranda, immerses her readers into a vibrant journey of unlikely love where it starts to unfolds as a grumpy slightly older professor and his best friend (Tala’s) vibrant younger sister navigate their complex friendship, with a slow-burn tension that simmers beneath the surface🥰she falls first, while he grapples with unexpected feelings. Their age gap and familiar ties add layers to their evolving bond, shifting from dislike to a deeper connection when Luna's spirited nature finally starts to collide in with Gabe's grumpy exterior, transforming their dislike into a passionate romance learning each others depths.
The age gap adds richness as their friendship deepens, revealing past traumas and emotional journeys.

Book one, takes place with the amazing love-story of Tala and her NBA boyfriend Jason🥹🩷& You will also get to enjoy little Easter eggs from the very beginning of how Luna & Gabe first came about.
This being the second book in Anj Miranda series she definitely enriching the series with more emotional layers and thrilling moments than the first which I adore so much! Making this a great 5⭐️read!

Luna's unwavering love and support for Gabe highlight her determination, intelligence, & vibrant spirit giving her a captivating presence, ensuring those around her feel cherished and uplifted in every moment together throughout Anj Miranda's novel. Luna is a fave of mine✨

Gabe's tough presence hides a heart of gold. He's a bit grumpy at times, but his love for Luna shines throughly in every caring gesture. Always checking in on her happiness and well-being🥹❤️he turns his affection into daily acts of love-(Gabe is so😍😍)

Thank you so much to Anj Miranda for the opportunity to read her newly launched book in exchange for an honest review.

Suppose you have read the first book, The Off-Chance of Me and You; you know where things were left off. The Odds of Happily Ever After begins with Luna starting a new life or beginning on her own. Living in the shadow of her siblings, this is her opportunity to rise above and show what she's made of—like the true middle child that she is. I was excited for her to spread her wings and finally follow her dreams. As mentioned in my previous review, I really have a soft spot for Luna. She is still a feisty go-getter who shines everywhere she goes. I do believe that she's just afraid to show her maximum potential because of how other people think and dictate what they want for her. That's why having more Chloe and Kris in the mix helped the story have more flavor with their witty, naughty, straightforward banters.

Surprisingly, I devoured this book more quickly than I expected. Without considering the busy days in between, I could read it in 3-4 days, which is better than my reading performance for the first book. But similarly, it is still a slow burn. I think the action I expected happened when I was about 70-80% of the book. That's why I wished there were more 🌶️🌶️! But I somehow understand why Anj went to that route (correct me if I'm wrong, hahaha) because of how sensitive the topic of relationship is in terms of the MMC and the FMC's occupation is, which I think is very considerate of her. Even their decision-making and interactions, etc., were all well-thought-of. That's how you do it, guys! At the same time, now that I realize it, I appreciate the slow burn more now that we're living in a world of instant love. It's refreshing to read and see how any relationship starts from a friendship and develops from there.

Above everything else, the story is still heartfelt and tugged my heart, especially towards the end. Luna is THE representation of all Filipino, Asian, etc. middle children. I was able to relate to it wholeheartedly, from Luna's struggles to even her love language. As I said, this book was written for me. Before I forget, I also appreciate the different intro style per chapter compared to Book 1. It's very appropriate to Luna's age.

In conclusion, I highly recommend The Odds of Happily Ever After for those seeking a light, enjoyable read. Filled with moments that will make you swoon, hopeful messages, and sweet nothings, this book is a perfect escape from your everyday routine.

Review:

Did I enjoy this better than the first book?
Yes, I did!

There are a lot of things that I liked about The Odds of Happily Ever After.

1. Plot | Tropes: It was a slow burn romance and when I say slow, really slow but regardless, the chemistry and tension between the mmc and fmc were so captivating. I love how they started detesting each other to being friends and to lovers. I wasn’t sure I would like the age gap trope but I did love it in this book. This was also a she falls first but he falls harder.

2. Characters:
🌙 Luna - I love how she is matured enough for her age and I love how she always stays optimistic and a ray of sunshine even though she has a lot of baggage she is carrying on her own.
🌙 Gabe - He can have the sharpest tongue that can hurt you but has the sweetest mouth for Luna when he fell hard. He carried so much baggage with him and experienced a great amount of lose that made him the way he is but I love how he softened up to Luna and how his character developed so much through out the whole book but what I love most about him is that he sees Luna as her equal, not more and not less.

Overall this book was more deep, more thrilling, more relatable in a lot of ways and I really enjoyed every single of it! Also, I love how Jason and Tala’s relationship grew as seen in this book, plus minor character stand outs!!

If I liked Miles and Stassie from the first book, I like Chloe, Kriz, Max and Kai on this!

Chloe and Kriz are a perfect balance to have as friends but I love Chloe more on how non-filtered her mouth is and how she put tough love into action while Kriz will have your back all the time. Kai Walker, such a big golden retriever!! He is such a green flag that I felt sorry for him when he got rejected but interesting with his interaction with Chloe. May they have their own book? 🫣

And Max! I did not expect the twist in hid character!! But I am also interested with his backstory based on his conversations with Gabe.

The only thing I think for me that put it on a 4.5 is that, I liked Gabe’s and Luna’s hating-each-other vibe from the first book. But they still do have a lot of banters here that made me laugh, giggle and kicking my feet.

Highly recommend this book!! 🌙✨

⭐️⭐️ARC🌟REVIEW⭐️⭐️Oh my God, before I lose steam—Ms. Anj, you did it again! I keep falling in love with the characters you depict and I must say I was really sucked into the story because it was so relatable, especially with the Filipino mentality going on. (I know its a recurring trend but I havent really got into reading from Filipino authors unless it was some wattpad book i bought back in highschool and my textbooks)

Like last time, I was unable to put it down when I started. I have no idea how others are going to take it but for me this is a read I’m keeping close to my heart.

Sure it wasn’t as sizzling like Tala and Jason’s story, but the miscommunication—the internal conflicts—for one book it really crammed it in there.

Stable, that’s the word—even though Gabe had a foot-to-mouth problem and I was sooo frustrated that Luna kept forgiving him—-he BETTER KNOW SHE’S TOO GOOD FOR HIM. But he was consistent in his character. The slowburn was 🤌

The asking consent thing that Gabe does is very hot in my opinion. And character development. Ahh how I love it when it happens subtly. Gabe is good. Gabe is good.

Yes I had to say that twice.

Ahem. Anyway, there are layers to humans. No one is a robot that is programmed to do and be what is planned for it to do. Luna is a younger sibling—and—

Everyone has worries. Even though they’re not the same—the weight, the situation, the reason or whatever the heck it is that factors it as heavy or light to others, doesn’t make it any less valid for the person experiencing it for themself.

Luna has worries that only she has, and the same goes for Gabe, Tala, Jason, Lonzo and the Reyes’ siblings’ parents.
This book is like an awakening—an awareness waiting to happen for parents, Filipino parents—and to other parents in general that have the same mindset, that even though you say you know what’s best for your children, it wouldn’t hurt to listen and try to understand from our point of view. Children love to hear praise and be accepted for doing things that they love by the people they think parents.

I love the message this book is giving. It’s just what I needed—a wonderful read!

📚🇵🇭The Odds of Happily Ever After by Anj Miranda Book 2 from Reyes Siblings Series

Thank you again to Anj for allowing me to ARC this beautiful novel! It been making me so giddy when I discover Filipino romance authors and I can’t wait to find more!

The Odds of Happily Ever After is a contemporary romance set in a University. It is a continuation to book 1, where we now follow our FMC, Luna, the younger sister of Tala. She is studying abroad in the United States, finding herself having to be independent and to fend for herself since her “Ate” or older sister moved back to the Philippines. She has to shoulder being the middle child in the family, with traditional expectations that Filipino families present to their children - studying something practical like nursing or business, always comparing all of the siblings against each other, high expectations for grades and success. I just love being able to relate to her on a personal level!

Gabe, our MMC, is Tala’s best friend and a professor on campus who is working on his PhD. He vows to watch over Luna now that Tala is gone and initially finds her annoying and spoiled. He quickly realizes that his perception of her is not what it used to be and you see the evolution of dislike to like to even more. I throughly enjoyed his personal journey with her work life, family life and love life. The more grumpiest grump, but with the kindest heart.

I absolutely loved this book. Slow burns are always on my top list of tropes, but Anj Miranda made it worth the wait! I did miss the Filipino words and how it tied in with each chapter, but other than that, this was wonderful!

Read this if you like:

* Slowest of burns

* Filipino representation/culture

* She falls first but he falls harder
* Grumpy vs. sunshine

ARC REVIEW

First of all, thank you Anj Miranda for allowing me to do an ARC review of your book. I am so excited to share my thoughts on it.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

The Odds of Happily Ever After is a contemporary romance that takes place in a University setting. It follows Luna, an international student from the Philippines with a sunny personality (the complete opposite of the meaning of her name, moon), who is battling through her own insecurities as she feels like she can’t escape the shadows of her older sister and younger brother. It doesn’t get any easier when Gabe, her older sister’s good-looking best friend, as well as a professor in her school, is asked to check in on her. It wouldn’t have been so bad… if he didn’t act like he would rather be anywhere but where she was.

This was such a pleasure to read. I definitely was taken on a rollercoaster ride. Once I started, I couldn’t put down the book and I couldn’t help but keep smiling as the story progressed. It had tropes that I love and it was refreshing to see Filipino representation as it made this more relatable.

The characters were portrayed in such a natural way and they got me feeling all sorts of things. From annoyance for Luna’s father because of his treatment, to annoyance to Luna because she was too forgiving, from disliking Chloe to loving her for giving Luna real talk and food for thought, and then the amazement of the growth of both Luna and Gabe.

For the MCs:
Luna is an admirable character. She had the courage to stay in the US when her sister decided to go back to the Philippines and had to learn to fend for herself. As a family-oriented person, being away from her family was extremely difficult for her but she was determined to be independent and prove herself.

As for Gabe, his development was such a pleasure to see throughout the story. I appreciated the dual POV and how I was able to see the clear progression of the change in Gabe’s emotions. From someone being against feeling any emotion to someone who would volunteer himself just to see Luna smile. It really is such a wonder to see that development. Other stories seem to rush this development.

The Odds of Happily Ever After is a heartwarming contemporary romance that captures the journey of Luna to independence and adulthood. Luna is a college student, and Gabe is a university professor, who happens to be her sister’s best friend. This book brings together a slow-burn romance that takes its time to unravel but delivers so well.

We follow Luna from her freshman year in college at Sterling to her senior year, exploring her journey of self-discovery and proving her worth to her family, especially her parents. Luna's long-time crush on Gabe simmers for years, with Gabe initially seeing her as nothing more than a friend. Notably, although Gabe is a professor at Luna's university, she is not one of his students. When Gabe finally realizes his feelings for Luna, he falls hard and shows the sweetest, most attentive side, making her his priority.

The slow-burn romance is notable, with the "kilig" moments kicking in around the 50% mark. The tropes of age-gap romance and the classic grumpy x sunshine dynamic are prevalent. While age-gap relationships can be tricky to execute, it was pulled off suitably, steering clear of anything that might make the reader cringe. Instead, a mature exploration of these tropes was delivered.

I enjoyed the integration of text message exchanges and video calls, which added a modern touch to the storytelling. There are deeper themes such as grief, parent abandonment, self-acceptance, and the heavy expectations placed on children by their parents.

This book also portrays Filipino values, such as close family ties. Gabe is a Brazilian and part of the story has also shown his culture. Luna’s care for her grandmother while she was sick and dying is a relatable moment for me, and it further cements Luna as a character I root for.

TOoHEA is the second book in the Reyes Siblings series, and this was written by a Filipina author. If you're a fan of slow-burn romances with depth, I highly recommend grabbing a copy when it's released on October 22nd!

The Odds of Happily Ever After is the sweetest slow-burn I have ever read! Coming from someone who’s not really into slow-burns let alone an age gap romance, Luna and Gabe’s attraction for each other caught my interest since the introduction of their characters in The Off-Chance of Me and You. Despite the slow burn, the story kept my attention the entire time I was reading. I never felt for once to drop this book and finished reading this in one sitting. Go figure. 😉

Luna was an admirable female lead – from living with her entire family in Manila to moving to the USA with her Ate Tala to living alone in a foreign country isn’t an easy feat. With a part-time job, classes, maintaining her home, and feeding herself, I admire her resilience to keep it together, especially with her parents’ expectations of her. Gabe, on the other hand, was initially very stubborn about his growing feelings for Luna. Sure, him being a professor at Luna’s school and people’s perception of him complicates things, but his hesitation, admiration, and longing for her made the slow burn so much sweeter. I really enjoyed watching him slowly and gradually fall head-over-heels in love with Luna. It didn’t matter how slow it was for them to admit their feelings for each other, I feel like it was what it needed for them to grow and appreciate each other more.

Pick this one up when it releases in October for the sweetest, most adorable slow-burn romance!

After having a visa issue involving Luna’s sister, she has no choice but to live by herself in the U.S. Her sister Tala asked her best friend Gabe to check on Luna from time to time. With their history of unending banter and a cat-and-dog relationship, how will they deal with each other, especially when they regularly bump into each other at the university?

The Reyes Siblings series consists of standalone novels. However, for Book 2, it’s a must to read The Off-Chance of Me and You first, as it introduces the relationship between Luna and Gabe.
Like the other two books, it portrays the authenticity of how families treat and envision their children. Luna is a middle child; her struggles of being overshadowed by her siblings and dismissed by her parents are not new in any Filipino household. This story perfectly captures that scenario. Moreover, it also explores the emotional scars inflicted by family and how these affect one’s relationships with others.

This is a student-professor situation, yet I love how Anj wrote it in a way that it didn’t fall into the forbidden trope. It shows that there was no manipulation of emotions from Gabe toward Luna (as she is 20, a legal age in the U.S.), which aligns with the natural flow of intimacy between the two characters. This is the least spicy book in the series. Nonetheless, despite the fewer intimate scenes, the story gives readers a feel-good experience, as if they’re watching a rom-com movie.

The story focuses more on trust—since they have no one else to rely on, with their families distant both in proximity and emotional connection. Luna and Gabe being together shows how much they value each other’s presence, allowing one another to shine through the darkness and navigate what lies beyond the infinity of chances.

Thank you, Ms. Anj, for this opportunity to dive in to Gabe and Luna's lovely story!
I love it! It is sooooo giving Pinoy kilig!! 😍

The story of Gabe and Luna unfolds in Sterling, a small town in the USA, where Luna is a student at Sterling University and Gabe holds a professorship at the same university. Given this, Gabe was very clear about his boundaries—he didn't want to be friendly with Luna in order to avoid any issues at school. But as his best friend Tala's sister, he considered it his duty to look after her, which makes Luna pissed at times because it gives her confusion how Gabe is looking after her while being a jerk simultaneously. Despite her dislike for Gabe, she has harbored a long-standing crush on him. The story of Gabe's transformation from how he see Luna being "just Tala's sister" to seeing Luna as a woman, and how Luna's crush on Gabe evolved into love despite her dislike, is definitely worth reading!

This is the kind of slow-burn I enjoy so much that I occasionally forget it is a slow-burn romance! 😅 I love how Gabe always pays attention to even the tiniest of details about Luna and gives her what she wants and needs even without her asking. I also appreciate how Luna, with her Filipina hospitality genes, reciprocates by cooking for him. The story is so lighthearted that I find it easy to connect with, with bits of family issues to which the characters skillfully tackle and resolve.

It was a very light, enjoyable, and lovely read! I love how I was able to relate to some Filipino terms, cultures, and places which is very relatable to all Pinoys out there! 🇵🇭

ARC review :)

This is a book where the fmc becomes close friends with her sister’s older bestie after moving to the USA on her own, and follows them navigating this newfound friendship (that eventually turns into a relationship) all the while trying to figure out boundaries since he’s a professor at the college she attends. It tackles some heavy themes such as previous child abandonment, cancer, & family death- but doing so in a way that is more healing rather than traumatizing & not bringing down the overall mood of the book.

This was such a cute read! The writing was amazing and done in such a way that you easily understood everything that was happening. The characters were so amazing and written so well! I was rooting for them every step of the way! And the character development!!! It was so real. We got to see them grow as individuals and as a couple as well- it was just so sweet. I LOVED how Luna slowly grew into herself and became her own person despite the challenges she faced from her family. I LOVED how much of a gentleman Gabe was!!! Even when he was grumpy af, he still was a gentleman by carrying Luna's bags at any chance or explicitly asking for consent. Ugh give me a man like Gabe and I'll be happy for the rest of my life. They complemented each other very well and I enjoyed reading their journey so much! 10/10 recommend!

Read if you enjoy:
• academia setting • age gap • grumpy x sunshine
• family bantering • poc representation
• gentleman mmc • slow burn • sister’s best friend
• dislike to friends to lovers

reading The Odds of Happily Ever After felt unexpectedly personal. luna’s story hit me hard, her struggles were more painful and complicated than i anticipated. as the eldest myself, it surprised me how deeply i resonated with her experience of feeling overlooked, like a middle child stuck in the background. it was a quiet ache that lingered throughout the book, and as a certified crybaby, there were moments that genuinely made me tear up.

i didn’t like Gabe at first. he was rude and cold toward Luna, and i honestly thought i’d never warm up to him. i'm not even a fan of slowburns, but i’ll admit—when the tension started to shift, i was all in 💯 their chemistry snuck up on me, and by the time Gabe started showing up for Luna in his own way, i was swooning 😭❤️ the effort he made was absolutely unmatched!!

and don’t get me started on Chloe 🙄 i couldn’t stand her from the beginning, she had me rolling my eyes every time she appeared. but i’ll give her credit, her character arc gave her some redemption in the end 😆

what i really appreciated, though, was how easy it was to read this. the pacing felt right, the conflict wasn’t overly stressful, and despite the emotional weight, it flowed effortlessly. definitely a solid follow-up to the first book—and now i’m even more curious about how it all wraps up in the third one.

Thank you Anj for a free copy of this book!

Book 1 was so good but book 2?! Wow. This one’s a continuation of the first where we follow Tala’s sister, Luna, as she goes through college by herself. We also follow Gabe, Tala’s best friend + a professor at Luna’s college, as he basically just goes through life while also trying to look out for Luna… for Tala’s sake or maybe because of something more??? 👀

This is a grumpy x sunshine book (with a 10 year age gap) and i ATE IT UP. Gabe is such a grump and Luna really tries to break down his walls but every time they take 1 step forward, it’s always 10 steps back. It’s such a slow slow burn but ooooof, the payoff is >>>>.

I could really relate to both of them in different ways. For Luna, it’s having to choose something practical in college due to the pressure to excel / make her parents proud. For Gabe, it’s not being able to take the big risk because he likes the safe route. Both had to prove something to themselves but they needed each other to make them realize it.

I love how they both grew personally. I loved Luna’s growth in her independence and in her confidence. & I loved how Gabe learned how to be more socially aware and how life is more than just work.

This might be my fave Anj book yet!!! On to the next and last of the Reyes siblings series and I’m really sad about it!

THE WAY THE FIRST 50 PAGES OF THIS BOOK MADE ME SOB IN THE BATHROOM IS JUST CRIMINAL!!!!

Anj Miranda does it again. I love it when a romance book makes me root for each individual character AND their relationship. Luna and Gabe endeared themselves to me from the very first page.

It was satisfying to see how Anj wrote Luna's character—seemingly superfluous and childish but turns out to be the most mature person in the entire story with the way she handles conflict and emotions. Gabe, on the other hand, is this classic brooding male lead but he is honest and thoughtful and he isn't afraid to show it (despite his thoughts saying otherwise) in the small gestures. Definitely an Acts of Service kind of guy which makes me love him a lot more 🫶🏼

It's a slow-burn romance that's filled with tension, a dash of angst, and a generous heap of character development. Top it all off with the masterful way that Anj Miranda writes Filipino family dynamics and you've got the best Filipino romance I've ever read so far.

I love this even more than the first book! I can’t get enough of Luna and Gabe’s story. I was literally shocked when I realized I was already at the Epilogue. I didn’t notice the time or even what chapter I was on while reading. That’s how good it was for me.

However, the more I got to know the Reyes siblings, I couldn’t help but question their parents. Why did they let their children feel this way? They’re either pressured or made to feel like they’re not enough. I know there are no perfect parents or families, but it just saddens me. I’ve already started Lonzo’s story, and I can feel that he too, like his Ates, feels he’s not good enough.

Still, that didn’t stop me from giving this book five stars and calling it my favorite. I’m also excited to read The Fallacy of True Love.

Gabe and Luna’s love story is undeniably romantic, a slow burn that’s exciting and full of heart. I love how their story unfolds. Their chemistry is so strong, I couldn’t stop smiling!

This book is for those who know what they want and are determined to get it. It’s for someone like Luna, who might be scared at first to take a new path in life alone, but still chooses to set aside that fear to pursue her dream. She proves that even if she’s seen as the run-of-the-mill sibling, she can still shine when she’s doing what she loves.

Thank you so much, @anjmiranda for the ARC. I received an ARC of this book for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

The Odds of Happily Ever After is a grumpy x sunshine and slow burn centering around Gabe and Luna. Luna, our FMC, is Tala's younger sister who has had a crush on Gabe for a long time but doesn't want to admit it because Gabe keeps ignoring him and making her lose her patience every time they interact. Just like Tala, she moved to the USA to study (through scholarship). And when Tala went back to Manila, Luna continued her part-time job to fend for herself while also maintaining her scholarship to make her parents proud. Gabe, our MMC, hides his love and care for Luna by always being grumpy, which adds layer and richness to their relationship.

I can say that I liked this over the first. And while I'm not really a fan of the age gap trope, this book is an exception. I liked how the characters were perfectly written; Luna being the rays of sunshine for those around her and her resiliency to do things on her own screams ✨️ strong, independent woman ✨️. Gabe, despite his traumatic past, lowers his guard and takes chances with Luna. Alonzo, who is very protective of her sister, worrying that Luna will be taken away from him as well adds an emotional layer to the entirety of the story.

Aside from the romance aspect, I also liked how the book tackled how a parent's expectations affect a person. In Luna's case, she felt that her parents don't trust her enough to do things and make decisions/judgements on her own. It wouldn't hurt for a parent to listen to their children. To ask for their insights or point of view.

Overall, I gave this book a solid 5 stars, and I'm so excited for its release date on October 22! Give this book a shot if you're a fan of the grumpy x sunshine, slow burn, and dislike to friends to lovers trope.

Let me straighten the facts why I LOVE this:

1. GABE'S GRUMPY SOUL slowly realizing how important Luna is to him

Seriously! I think grumpyxsunshine trope makes the top list of my favorites lately. There's just so much giddy excitement witnessing how a grumpy MC falls hard for the lady. Plus, I love how Gabe didn't force his "grumpy strict routine" on Luna, and lets her independence shine forth still in their growing relationship. As Luna points it out, "Slow, not glacial". But really, his acts of service is waving green flag!!! 💚

2. LUNA'S PERSISTENCE IN GOALS AND LOVE LIFE

Hats off to Luna's resilience. I mean, it's such a pressure to prove yourself to your parents and balance your goals and passion. I love how she finally stood up for herself, not just to Gabe, or her friend Chloe, but also to her parents - not to be a brat, but an eager woman strong enough to reach for her goals. Also, her persistence in her love for Gabe, despite the bouts of miscommunication and tension, she still stood up for herself, not being a helpless woman who is blind in love.

Plus I also want to special mention CHLOE. I mean, she may come off as "b*tchy", but in reality, she's so real and genuine. She reminds me of my friend who speaks and acts with tact but with love and genuine concern.

This definitely lives up to the “slow-burn” label! Luna and Gabe’s story had me intrigued from the start, especially with the chemistry teased in The Off-Chance of Me and You, so I went in with high hopes. While their romance builds in a gradual, meaningful way, I have to admit that the pacing felt almost too slow at times. There were moments where I found myself wishing they’d just get to the point—it felt like the tension dragged on a little longer than necessary.

On the positive side, that slow build does give the story room to develop both characters. Luna’s journey as she adjusts to life in a new country, handles family expectations, and discovers who she really is adds so much depth to her character. And Gabe’s inner struggle as he starts to fall for her, despite his hesitations, is so cute to watch. Plus, his forgiveness towards his dad’s mistakes was a nice, meaningful touch.

Overall, while the slow build might test your patience, it makes the payoff more satisfying. The Odds of Happily Ever After is still a charming romance with a lot of heart and thoughtful moments.

Can I rate a book a million stars out of five?

Because this book really said, "Listen, the moment you finish reading me, I'm going to have you in a chokehold so bad you won't be able to pick another book up because I will take permanent residence in that little brain of yours."

And that's exactly what happened.

This age-gap, sister's-best-friend romance has zero unnecessary drama, just the most delicious slow burn I was looking for. We have Gabe, a stoic and grumpy professor who has been pining for his best friend's sister, and Luna, said sister who's trying to figure out what she wants in college and who has been harboring a crush on the professor herself.

I honestly can't think of anything to say about Luna and Gabe's story because words simply can't express how much I LOVED (yes, it has to be in all caps) it.

Needless to say, I can't recommend this enough. Seriously, do yourself a favor and pick. 👏 This. 👏 Book. 👏 Up!!! 👏

Thank you so much to Anj Miranda for providing a complimentary copy of this book! All thoughts expressed in this review are my own and given with my own free will.
