It's that time of the year again, that row of calendar boxes that we all spend months looking forward to. Summer vacation. A chance to escape the daily grind, to relax, unwind, reconnect and get some sun. For Jeff, those days have always been spent in Cape May, NJ, and this year is no different. At least in that respect. But a terrible surprise awaits those vacationing in Cape May County this year, as those soaking in the rays will be forced to turn their attention from tan lines and funnel cake to simply surviving the rest of the week.
Includes the first few chapters of A Man Overboard!
Shawn Hopkins lives with his wife and daughters in Pennsylvania. He holds degrees in theology and likes exploring the speculative side of such topics through the telling of unique stories and their characters. He enjoys a good thunderstorm, football, movies, and of course reading. He is busy on the next book.
Just when you think you're relaxing on the beach in beautiful, placid Cape May, things get creepy. And just when you think creepy is the only place you're headed, things go way beyond that. You will enjoy this one as a family's vacation becomes something more than they bargained for.
I purchased "Seagull Summer" a novella by Shawn Hopkins on Amazon.com.
This story had me laughing out loud several times. Shawn has such a delightful way of expressing himself. If you are at all familiar with Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" you will get this story.
The story is about Jeff, Samantha and their 2 year old son Doug. They are on vacation at Cape May in New Jersey. When I read the part about the poop and the "Baddah Up" I just busted out laughing. What a mental image.
Anyway, they are having a great day at the beach until Samantha gets attacked by a seagull. The seagulls seem to be behaving oddly. The following day Jeff is up early and walking the beach and is admiring a young female beach jogger when a seagull dive bomb's into the back of her head. She falls and another seagull dive bombs into her back. These 2 seagulls are aggressively attacking her for no reason. Jeff starts yelling and is running to her assistance and the birds take off. The girl thinks Jeff is the one that attacked her and screams for help. Another bystander calls the cops and he ends up going to the police station to give a statement when the responding officer can't find any evidence that Jeff had attacked the young woman. Jeff is released and he heads back to the house and finds his son watching TV and Samantha not up. He feeds Doug and goes to check on Samantha. Samantha is not feeling well and just wants to stay in bed. Jeff decides to head to the beach with Doug.
They are having a good time when Jeff notices people are looking up and he does also. He sees a big black cloud moving toward the beach. Jeff is shocked when he sees seagulls diving and attacking people. He grabs Doug and starts running towards the house and safety. The military shows up and the seagulls are shot down. The story ends with them getting some kind of vaccine and able to head home. Though Jeff seems unaware of a rash that is appearing on him skin.......
The way the story ends makes me wonder if there is more to this story???
Note to author: This was such a fun, interesting and quick read. Thanks so much for the invitation. I haven't enjoyed a Novella to this extent in a while. I have also posted my review at Amazon.com as well as on my facebook page and twitter.
Seagull Summer is a novella guaranteed to make you look anxiously to the sky next time you hear the sound of a seagull! The author was great at his descriptions of Cape May. Also of the terror that the seagulls brought about to the people on the beach.
This was a quick book that could be read and enjoyed while relaxing at the beach this summer!
A fun, scary little story let down by a weak ending.
Seagull Summer really brings the fear and dread, and it does it well. But sadly, the ending is weak and inconclusive - not in a horror 'will this come back ooooh' kind of way, but in a way that suggests the author didn't know how to finish it.
