Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

I can only imagine how exciting it would have been to hear Spurgeon preach in person. His sermons evidence a man who was very well studied on a variety of topics and who was extremely well spoken. I especially appreciate that he presented the gospel in a myriad of ways instead of repeating a memorized sales pitch over and over.

Since I would not call myself a Calvinist, there were a few times I had to respectfully agree to disagree with his strong love for the doctrines of Calvinism. Spurgeon seemed to favor the pick-one-verse-and-preach-from-it method, though he filled in other texts throughout his discourse. He also, at this time in his life, had a curious dislike for apologetics and death bed confessions.

I admire his respect for Christians in other denominations and that he would use the Hebrew, Greek, or even the Latin Vulgate if he felt the King James was not clear.

What a magnificent experience it must have been to sit and listen to Charles Spurgeon. His sermons are so full of the love of Christ that you can feel the Holy Spirit speaking through his words. An absolute delight to the soul. Now on to the next volume!

A good collection of sermons through various subjects. There are some good turns of phrase and illustrations to deliver the biblical message. As a Lutheran, I appreciated a couple times where Spurgeon explicitly distinguished between Law and Gospel in understanding of scripture. However, his identification of the Christian faith as synonymous with Calvinism was off-putting, although he always shied away from explaining this when he made the assertion by turning to a more "mere" Christian doctrine (how the faith is understood across all denominations) instead of promoting any of the five points of Calvinism.

Spurgeon's sermons are without equal. This was the first volume of his sermons that I ever read. Many more to follow.
