Published in 1979, 'The Scale Modeller's Handbook' gives a roundup look at the hobby as it was. It looks at plastic models, card models, metal models, wooden models and sometimes a mixture of all of them, along with techniques. The downside is that it does this against a background of the state of play in 1979, and reading this now you realise just how much things have evolved. Many of the methods/techniques seem dated by modern standards, whilst many of the manufacturers referred to are long gone. To be fair, some had gone long before the book was written, so I suspect that some tracts may have been cribbed from previous articles. But, even though many techniques have changed, the book helps to remind you of just how you can achieve spectacular results without simply throwing money at the hobby and by simply relying on good old modelling techniques. Enjoyable, if dated.
