As the wall is peeled back, everyone falls silent. Then they see her. The near-perfect remains of a young female, two jelly bangles and a neon necklace being the only clues to how long she had been hidden there. But who was she? And who could have possibly wanted to take such an innocent life?

When the body of girl is discovered in the walls of a Woodbridge church, Detective Amanda Steele is immediately called to the scene. On arrival she meets FBI Special Agent Sandra Vos who explains that while negotiating a hostage incident moments before, a gun was fired. The bullet missed its target but exposed human remains.

The victim has been perfectly preserved, her jewellery and summer dress taking Amanda back to her own teenage years. DNA quickly confirms that the victim was taken over thirty years ago. Thinking about her own daughter, Amanda cannot imagine the devastation for the young girl’s family and vows to find the killer.

Amanda and her partner Trent determine the suspect behind the attempted shooting, Cameron Cofell, had a very clear reason for exacting revenge on the church’s priest. As they question the wider community, a neighbour reveals her long-held suspicions too. But when she is found murdered, Amanda knows this killer is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep their dark secret from ever coming to light.

Soon the investigation takes Amanda and Trent to an abandoned farmhouse—a place that haunts Cameron’s nightmares—where they find a faded photograph that holds the mystery of another chilling cold case. But just how far back does this evil go, and how much will Amanda and Trent need to sacrifice to find the killer?

A totally addictive crime thriller that will leave you breathless and have you racing through the pages. Perfect for fans of Kendra Elliot, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine.

The latest book in Carolyn Arnold’s series featuring Detective Amanda Steele is dark with intense moments, suspense, and solid police investigation. It’s the thirteenth book in the series and one of my top-rated ones. Amanda and her partner, Detective Trent Stenson, are sent to a crime scene at Herald Church. However, they’re not there for the hostage situation that occurred earlier. Instead, the body of a girl was discovered in the church walls after a bullet exposed an area behind the wallboard.

The victim has been preserved and DNA confirms the victim was taken thirty-one years ago when she was eight. However, the body is that of a sixteen-year-old. Where had she been for the eight years since she was kidnapped and who took her? As Amanda and Trent investigate and question the community in and around the church, a picture starts to unfold. Can they determine who kidnapped the young girl and who hid her body in the church wall?

Amanda is determined to get justice for victims and tends to get immediately to the point at a crime scene. She’s sensitive but not soft, inquisitive, resilient, struggles with work-life balance, and tends to rush ahead without back-up at times. Trent is loyal, funny, and always has Amanda’s back. He grounds her when she needs it and is often the voice of reason. He values honesty and views work as a calling, not a day job.

The author has a writing style that quickly pulls readers into the story. With a disturbing prologue, several suspects, a twist or two, some action scenes, and a solid plot, it kept me rapidly turning the pages. The recurring characters grow more dynamic in each new novel as readers learn more about their personal and professional lives. Themes include families, relationships, child abuse, kidnapping, murder, and much more.

Overall, this novel is an engaging, fast-paced, engrossing, dark, and gripping police procedural. The author’s note at the end reveals where she took creative liberties with such things as how fast DNA results were received. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Amanda and Trent. This series is best read in order to fully understand the backstories of the main characters. It’s a must-read for those who enjoy mysteries, crime thrillers, and police procedurals. On another exciting note, FBI Special Agent Sandra Vos is introduced in this book and is getting her own series. I’m looking forward to reading it.

Bookouture and Carolyn Arnold provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for February 20, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Hidden Angels is another thrilling installment in Arnold's Detective Amanda Steele series. Despite being the thirteenth book, the series continues to grow stronger with each case, offering original and captivating mysteries. With well-developed characters, engaging plots and suspense that keeps readers hooked from start to finish.

Amanda's current case involved solving a decades old murder. While Amanda along with her partner Trent don't usually solve cold cases, they approached this case with the same diligence as they would with any of their other cases. This case landed in their laps when a hostage situation led to the discovery of a body hidden in the walls of a church. The body belongs to a sixteen-year-old girl who went missing thirty-one years ago when she was only eight years old. The big questions arising from the discovery were who kidnapped and killed her and why?

Throughout the course of their investigation Amanda and Trent unearthed disturbing secrets. As a mother the case affected Amanda, and she made it her mission to find justice for this young victim. The investigation revealed a connection between the individual behind the hostage situation and body found in the church. This twist along with many others added to the complexity of the case, making it one of the most challenging cases of Amanda's career.

Each new piece of evidence, takes Amanda and Trent deeper into this twisted and dark world. Once again Arnold sheds light on the depravity of human behavior. This is one of those mysteries where not all the answers were obvious. The cases presented in each installment work as standalones, however the undercurrents of Trent and Amanda's relationship makes it preferable to read the series in order although not necessary.

Hidden Angels is the perfect read for persons who enjoy a challenging mystery. A mystery that keeps the detectives involved on their toes and the reader engaged from start to finish. If you're looking for a gripping crime novel this book is a must-read.This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

Would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book

When the hostage situation ended in the church and the perp arrested … the body of a young girl was found in the dry wall … thanks to the bullet discharged by the perp

It later came out the young girl had been there for 23 years and had been missing for 8 years prior to that

What followed next was an uncovering of shocking revelations that only this author could produce it was edge of the seat stuff that filled you with horror at the parents suffering for all those years and the shocking cover up of abuse from the church confessionals to a few ignorant villagers who turned a blind eye

Its one of the best reads to date and can’t wait for the next book from this author

Carolyn Arnold is a go to author for me. Her ability to spin a web of mystery keeps me following along in her step by step investigation. Detective Amanda Steele is on the case in Hidden Angels.

Her body had been hidden in the walls of the church for twenty years. How could it be that she had never been missed? As the story unfolds the ugliness of their community is exposed. Lives will be changed forever.

Amanda’s long term relationship is over and she is single again. She finds it hard to balance work and family, but isn’t that a common problem for all of us? Especially for a homicide detective? Their job is no nine to five job. Her partner, Trent is in a relationship, so she puts aside the feelings that she has for him. Zoe, her adopted daughter who is nine years old going on teenager, is her anchor.

When Amanda and Trent were questioning Audrey:

The woman’s elaborate storytelling had drawn her in.

It made me think of my husband’s ability to stretch a story out.

As the investigation develops, dirty secrets are exposed. The victim had been used and abused and tossed aside like trash. Those involved are despicable and I hope they get their comeuppance. Knowing Carolyn Arnold, she will make them pay.

I want to thank Carolyn Arnold, NetGalley and Bookouture for the chance to read Hidden Angels.

When Cameron Cofell takes a local priest hostage, a stray bullet exposes human remains in the wall of a church. Cameron believes the priest is responsible for covering up the abuse he received at the hands of his now deceased parents. The human remains are those of a teenage girl who was abducted more than thirty years ago. Detective Amanda Steele and partner Trent Stenson investigate this heartbreaking case which uncovers long hidden secrets and puts another life in danger.

This is yet another of Arnold’s fast paced, suspenseful police procedurals. She is one of my go to authors and does not disappoint. She knows how to capture and maintain readers' interest and keep them briskly turning the pages. I enjoy the repeating characters, especially Amanda who, despite an earlier tragedy in her life, is a strong, capable, independent female. Yes, she has her flaws and one of them may be caring too much.

This is the thirteenth in the Prince William County (VA) Detective Amanda Steele series. Although I have read many of them, I think this would work as a standalone.

If you are a fan of police procedurals, and well written, flowing stories with good character development, do check out this series.

Thanks to #NetGalley and @Bookouture for the DRC.

Arrrrrgh... Amanda & Trent, will you just get it together already 🤣🤣 I'd so love to see th3m FINALLY realising they are each other's soul mate!

When a local priest is held captive in his church by a past member of the congregation, Cameron Cofell, things take a turn when a shot is fired, hitting a wall and exposing a body, entombed in the nave.

The body is identified as a young girl who went missing at 8 years old, kidnapped from an amusement park but when buried, would have been sixteen, so where had she spent those intervening years before her death?

Detectives Steele and Trent are called to investigate and soon realise that something from the past has now been brought into the present.

Cameron believes that the priest was covering up the abuse he received by his now deceased parents and wants justice, someone to believe him. As Steele and Trent start investigating not only Camerons claims but also the body in the wall, they are faced with the fact that there is a connection, but can they connect all the dots before it's too late.

Since splitting from her partner, Amanda is now a single parent to her adopted daughter Zoe and is constantly feeling the guilt of the late nights and long days her job entails, thankfully her family are there to be on hand and offer the support she needs. The frisson she still feels for Trent is still burning a flame, but she tampers it down, knowing Trent is in a relationship.

As I've now come to expect from this series, it's a high octane ride that will have you on the edge of your seat. It continually spins the narrative. One minute, you're certain you know all the answers, and the next, you are right back to square one.

The characterisation is spot on, I love how the deeper we are getting into the series, the more we learn about the main characters but with each installment new characters appear, in Book #13 we meet FBI Special Agent Sandra Vos, a formidable Agent who goes above and beyond to help the duo when needed, unlike previous FBI Agents. I loved Vos from the get-go and can't wait for her own series to start!

Perfectly paced, whilst I adore this series, I do feel this one could actually be read as a standalone alone.

Huge thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

Hidden Angels by Carolyn Arnold features police detective Amanda Steele solving another hideous murder. She is working with her partner, Trent Stenson, for whom she has an undeniable attraction. She has broken up with Logan, with whom she had been in a relationship for several years. Being a cop is hard on relationships. This morning they have been called to a church where a gunman is threatening a priest. He is ranting about the abuse he had suffered and the priest had done nothing to stop it. The police got him under control, but several shots had been fired so Amanda and Trent went in to the church to look around. There was a hole in one wall, and inside that hole there was a dead body. It had been there for years. This discovery was to spread to encompass many people and break hearts.

Amanda is a good character. She tends to push the envelope as a cop sometimes, but always has a reason. Still… She and Trent worked well together, which was a blessing. She had reunited with her family from whom she estranged herself after the death of her husband, daughter, and unborn child. Her father had previously been chief of police and was still close friends with her boss, Malone. This was a sad and heinous crime. It was difficult to investigate as much of it was about children. As always, Arnold puts together a good police thriller. Always an enjoyable read.

I was invited to read Hidden Angels by Bookoutre. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #CarolynArnold #HiddenAngels

✅OH MY GOSH!
Carolyn Arnold you had me reading late into the night with Hidden Angels…..
What a horrific, heartbreaking and emotionally charged story. I was caught up in the story from the first page to the last. I do feel the end was a bit rushed….I just needed a bit more closure to a few things. BUT…..this story was so addictive!
Can Amanda and Trent figure out a mysteriously hidden murder that happened over 30 years ago? Can they unravel all the secrets that have been kept hidden through the years?
I always look forward to meeting up with Detective Amanda Steele and her partner, Detective Trent. They work so well together as a team. Can I wish there was a bit more going on with their personal relationship???????
I can’t recommend this series enough! Please read the books in order….there is so much back story to the main characters that is very important to know.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Hidden Angels by Carolyn Arnold is the 13th book in her wonderful Detective Amanda Steele series. As I have noted previously, I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her books, and I love this series, which continues with another fantastic addition. Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Prince William County, Virginia

When a local priest is held captive in his church, a shot is fired, hitting a wall in the Woodbridge church, which exposed a body entombed. Detective Amanda Steel and her partner, Trent are called to the scene. Amanda meets FBI agent Sandra Vos, who was negotiating a hostage situation in the church. Sandra was willing to help Amanda and Trent, getting more information for their needs.

The DNA quickly confirms that the victim was kidnapped from an amusement park over thirty years ago, with the child being 8 years old. Her body was entombed within the wall at the age of sixteen. Cameron Cofell was the one who threatened the priest, as he thought the church was abusive, but his parents were the ones who abused him. Cameron’s parents were killed in an accident a few years ago, and it was suspected that the parents were the ones who kidnapped the girl, and killed her 8 years later.

Amanda and Trent are deep in investigating the past and the present, as they will work long into the night to find the truths. Amanda and Trent go to an abandoned farmhouse, finding faded photos that that holds the mystery of who helped the parents kill the girl.

Amanda and Trent are a great team, and I like them together. Amanda is a great detective, very strong, independent, and always able to solve any case. She also worries about her daughter, Zoey, because she always busy on a case, and feeling guilty about those long days that her job entails.

What follows is an exciting, fast paced, suspenseful, compelling, intriguing, tense mystery, that kept me unable to put the book down, as this was another fantastic thriller. Hidden Angels was a fabulous crime thriller, that was another gripping addition to the Detective Amanda Steele series. Another wonderful police procedural, with great characters, edge of your seat thriller, with some twists and surprises at the end. Hidden Angels was once again so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, which is the norm for this author. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this series.

Hidden Angels is the 13th book in the Detective Amanda Steele series and it was another original, interesting crime thriller. During a hostage incident at a local church, a body is discovered hidden in the walls when a bullet goes through the drywall in the nave. Detective Amanda Steele is immediately called to the scene, where FBI agent Sandra Voss fills her in on the incident. The victim has been perfectly preserved, her jewellery and summer dress taking Amanda back many years. When DNA is checked, they find out that although the victim is in her mid-teens, she was kidnapped over thirty years ago when she was only 8 years old. The construction was done 23 years earlier, so they realize that she was 16 when she was put in the wall. Where was she for those 8 years in between. Thinking about her own daughter, Amanda cannot imagine the devastation for the young girl’s family and vows to find the killer.

Cold cases are not the usual crimes Amanda deals with, but she and her partner Trent go at the investigation just as diligently as any crime they are assigned. The place to start is with those who worked on the repairs to the church and although the priest doesn't want to give them any information, they get a warrant and he has to. I will say that I did not like him at all. He was more worried about his "flock" and church than getting justice for the young victim. There is also a question as to whether he knew about abuse going on within his congregation that he ignored. This was not an easy case to solve. It isn't until someone comes forward to tell them what they saw 23 years earlier that the investigation really gets moving. There is another murder along the way and of course, Amanda is once again in danger, but they eventually bring the case to a close. I do like the inclusion of the personal lives of Amanda and Trent and how they try and fit it all in with their job. I was pretty sure I knew who the killer was, but was there someone else who helped? This book has themes of abuse, infidelity, child abduction, and life/work balance. I thought the ending was very realistic as life is not always tied up with a ribbon. I definitely recommend this book and series to those who enjoy a good crime thriller or police procedural.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

Carolyn Arnold’s Hidden Angels is a haunting excavation of buried truths—both literal and emotional—that grips from its chilling opening to its final, breathless reveal. In this thirteenth installment, Arnold proves that longevity in a series doesn’t mean predictability; instead, she delivers a taut, emotionally resonant thriller that deepens Amanda Steele’s character while keeping the stakes razor-sharp.

When a hostage situation in a Woodbridge church leads to the accidental discovery of a perfectly preserved body hidden within its walls, Detective Amanda Steele is thrust into a decades-old mystery. The victim, a teenage girl abducted over thirty years ago, reawakens long-dormant secrets in the community—and in Amanda herself. As she and her partner Trent Stenson dig deeper, they uncover a web of trauma, silence, and vengeance that stretches far beyond the church’s stained-glass windows.

- Time as a Character: Arnold masterfully uses the passage of time not just as a backdrop but as a force that shapes memory, guilt, and justice. The juxtaposition of 1990s nostalgia with present-day urgency adds a poignant layer to the investigation.

- Amanda’s Emotional Arc: While the procedural elements are sharp, it’s Amanda’s internal reckoning—especially as a mother—that gives the novel its emotional heft. Her empathy for the long-lost girl is palpable, and her determination feels deeply personal.

- Atmospheric Tension: From the eerie silence of the church to the decaying farmhouse that holds more than just dust, Arnold’s settings are immersive and unsettling, echoing the psychological weight of the crimes.

Hidden Angels is a meditation on the long shadows cast by buried trauma and the resilience required to face them. Arnold doesn’t just deliver twists; she delivers truths, wrapped in suspense and anchored by a heroine who continues to evolve with grace and grit.

Detective Amanda Steele Book 13.

This books plotline is very dark and disturbing. It was a great read and had me totally hooked. I love this series and can't wait to read the next one.

It's a good thing I am a speedy reader because I was not going to sleep until I finished this book. Wow! Carolyn Arnold knows how to write a mystery that will snag your attention and immediately pull you into this dark story.

Cameron Cofell holds a priest hostage in his own church, but that is not the real story. The real story happens when he shoots a hole in a the wall of the church, which is where the police discover a young woman's body. A young woman's dead body encased in the walls of the church is disturbing enough, but the things that Cameron was ranting on about make this case even more disturbing. He is definitely not well, but there seems to be some truth to his words.

Amanda and Trent arrive on the scene and are completely disgusted by what they find. As their investigation deepens they will uncover long buried secrets that no one thought would ever see the light of day, or at least hoped not. This was a perfect blend of police procedural and cold case mystery that will have you putting on your amateur sleuthing hat trying to solve this mystery. The hits just kept coming, and I never saw most of them until they hit. This was a sad, dark tale of twisted human beings, but you will not be able to put it down because you will have to know what happened. The pacing was perfect and the teasers were just enough to keep you glued to the pages as you race to the end.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am growing annoyed with this series. The plot was fine, but the author's writing is not improving over time. Amanda's characterization sometimes bounces all over the place, with growth that retreats frequently. Sure, we all have to learn some lessons multiple times, but it's becoming grating to me. Ditto the professional relationship between Amanda and Trent.

Worse, though, is that the author has them repeating the same discussions, thoughts, and interactions over and over. By now, this should be happening a lot less.

In this book, there is some real hostility toward religion. I understand Amanda's position to a point, and this cleric is certainly one of the worst sorts. Still, it comes across as an indictment of all religious people. Additionally, as so many authors do, this author conflates Catholicism with Protestantism. Their leaders, beliefs, and rituals differ. Here, they mingle with the worst of quasi-religious piety to create something that is truly off-putting. Perhaps that was the intention; there are certainly so-called Christian churches and people who are just as presented here. However, there is zero indication that perhaps not all professed believers are as craven as this entire congregation appears.

I also found the ending unsatisfying. True, sometimes you can't find answers to all the questions, but this felt off. Not so much "we tried, but couldn't" as the author just decided it was good enough and stopped.

I now have to decide whether to give this series one more chance or just cut my losses.

Detectives Steele & Stenson are back with another case, this time one involving a decades old kidnapping, a murder, and an entire congregation.

As always, I was absolutely obsessed with this book. Every installment of this book is a five star for me, but this particul;ar one was definitely in my top three for the series. I loved how the initital incident uncovers a totally different case by sheer chance. I also loved how the local church had a pretty good sized congregation while being surrounded by some pretty distrustful neighbords. The priest is a very interesting character in this one too, you're unsure until pretty close to the end if he's part of the problem or truly a bystander which made for a really interestng dynamic.

This installment also has some really good personal growth despite nearly non existent romantic situations; we get slight resolution to the Logan/Amanda arguments, we're still seeing Trent and his girlfriend, and the whole time Trent & Amanda have to navigate those situations as they relate to their own personal & professional relationships. The series continues to be just an amazing slow burn on the personal front, with family storylines, romantic storylines, and friendship growths and set backs all set against the backdrops of fast moving cases. This is hands down my favorite currently running series, I can't wait for more!

A shooting in a church leads to the discovery of a body behind a wall. The body is identified as a girl who vanished aged 8 but this body is of a sixteen year old. Who held Sadie for 8 years then killed her…?
Hidden Angels is the 13th book to feature Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Trent.
Amanda and Trent are called to a church where a priest has been held hostage at gunpoint by a man who claims he was abused. The gun goes off and a wall is damaged, revealing a young woman's body. Amanda and Trent are very determined to catch the killer, horrified by what they uncover.
This book is very emotive due to the kidnap and subsequent death of a child. The prologue starts with a girl being abducted and the evidence suggests she was held for years before she was murdered and hidden. The hostage taker has been traumatised by his childhood experiences.
There are lots of twists as the detectives investigate. Their frustration with the secrets and lies to protect the guilty felt realistic and made me even more supportive of Amanda and Trent. I found the reveal a bit contrived and didn’t really believe it felt authentic compared to the strong build up. The personal side to the detectives added a reminder of their softer elements to their characters which in turn lightened the dark tone of the criminal aspects of the plot.
Hidden Angels is a tense and dark crime thriller.

Thanks to Carolyn and NetGalley for allowing me to read Hidden Angels before the publication date.
This is the 13th book in the Detective Amanda Steele series.
The story has several topical issues which give pause for thought.

The prologue is disturbing, unsettling.
In the crowd at a theme park in Florida, a couple get separated from their 8 year old daughter.
Meanwhile, a man is moving through the throngs of families, watching, searching for an opportunity to approach a vulnerable, lone child.
Reading this, I am already wondering whether I can continue to read the book.

In the present day, a girl’s body is found in the walls of a church.
Amanda and Trent set out to identify the victim. Amanda already has some issues which complicate her dealings with the church, not helped by Father Linwood who is less than co-operative in the investigation.
Surprisingly, Sgt Malone seems to be micro managing then investigation.

This is a town which has many secrets and people who will lie to keep them secret.

In her personal life, Amanda is once again a single mother to Zoe, relying on family and friends to step in when her work commitments prevent her from being there to take care of Zoe. She still has feelings for Trent, who is now in a relationship.

Detective Amanda Steele is back in another thrilling read. A body has been found in the local church. Her & her partner Trent Stenson will need to find out who the young victim is and how she landed up behind a wall in the church. With the help of the FBI they start finding out more about the young girl Sadie Jackson was kidnapped twenty three before. They have to advise her parents and they vow to bring her killer or killers to justice. But what they learn is horrific she was abused by a local couple and they have also found that she had a baby while she was held captive.
But can Amanda & Trent find out who did this and why? Their search finds those responsible but they have both passed on but they have left a trail of devastation along the way.
Will they get justice for Sadie and for the young man they destroyed along the way?
Another great read in the series. Amanda is trying her best to be a single mom to her daughter Zoe and to be the best detective that she can be. I do wonder if her & Trent will ever take their relationship further but I know that he is in a relationship but I can only hope.
Thank you Netgalley & the publisher for the copy. This is my voluntary review.

A twisted mystery that began over twenty years ago. A young girl went missing during a family outing, but will her parents every get justice for their little girl? Years later, a young woman’s body will be found hidden and removed from a local church. Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Detective Trent Stenson are called to the scene when a priest had been threatened with a gun. A fired bullet will lead Amanda and Trent into one of their most complicated cases. Slowly they peel away the layers of what happened to the young girl and the abuse she suffered. When they realize that the abusers are beyond the scope of justice, they learn that a second man may have been involved. Another murder and the search for the second man becomes more difficult due to the span of years since the murder. The only witness they have is the young man who was raised in the home and suffers from the results of his own abuse during those years. Dogged determination will lead them to a possible suspect who they believe was involved in covering up the young girl’s death. Just when they think the case is solved, don’t blink as there is more trouble ahead for Amanda and Trent. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. The body of a teenager is discovered in the wall of a church after a man shoots at the priest and misses - the bullet breaking through the wall and exposing the body.

Amanda and Trent are tasked to find out who the girl is, as she has been entombed for many years.

Amanda works under the assumption that the cases are somehow linked.

A fast paced and twisty police procedural. Amanda has the instincts of a cat, knowing exactly when something is wrong.
She is battling to juggle her home life and her work life, and is still strongly attracted to Trent.
I love this series, and feel such rage at the church for actually allowing what happened to Cameron continue. No matter what 'confession' rules, are, if a child is harmed or a crime committed, the authorities should be informed! Personal opinion.

This is a very disturbing, dark novel, but the reader feels compelled to carry on reading, hoping that Amanda and Trent's detective skills solve the case.

I recommend. Carolyn Arnold knows how to draw in her readers very skilfully, and keep them invested in the story.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the DRC.

Disclosure. This is a review of an ebook I was sent for free. All opinions are my own.

This is the thirteenth title in the Detective Amanda Steele series.

The prologue hooks you in with an abduction of a young girl from a busy theme-park, leaving you wanting to know more.

Moving on, the main story starts decades later with a body being discovered by chance in a church wall, during an incident, where 23 year old Cameron Cofell was holding the priest hostage. Cameron had been abused as a child, and believed the priest was aware, but had not intervened.

Meanwhile it appears that the body had been in the wall for decades. As Detective Amanda Steele and partner Trent, start to speak to long-standing congregation members, they wonder if there is any connection.

And then there is another death of an elderly lady living next to the church, shortly after giving them a statement. The more they investigate, the darker it seems to get.

Lots of twists to this tale and an ending that I definitely didn’t see coming.

A thrilling page turner indeed.

And reading the author’s footnote at the end of the story is a must too!

⛪Good police procedural whodunit🙈🙉🙊

A thoroughly satisfying read, though it ends on a quite sad note. The main detectives are relatable, likable and a good team. The plot provided a great investigation related to some decades-old crimes with a child victim that an accidental bullet hole in a church wall brings to Prince William County Police Detectives Amanda and Trent to solve.

With no lulls, this book kept me on edge and guessing. I like that there's an absence of gore, some red herrings that had me totally hoodwinked, and some fast-paced action eventually. Poor Sadie and Cameron: both young kids whose lives are ruined and an atmosphere of adults knowing or guessing what's happening to them but remaining silent.

Although I might want to see a bit more on Amanda and Trent's personal lives, the overarching focus on solving the case, especially as more victims are involved, felt right.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

I have really enjoyed reading Hidden Angels which really hit the mark with me. Steele and Stenson have their work cut out investigating a case where a body is found within church walls and those responsible will do anything to keep their secrets. The authors writing is very good and engaging, the story flows well and pulled me in right from the start. The plot is believeable and realistic and deals with a very sensitive issue with great care and thought. Carolyn Arnold portrays her characters feelings, thoughts and emotions well and I loved being back with Steele and Stenson and following them on this case. The story is full of thrills, mystery and intrigue and the pacing is perfect. Whilst this is book 13 in a series it can be read as a standalone and if you're new to this author I'd say read the books in order to know the characters from the beginning. If you like a crime, mystery and police procedurals then I'd recommend this author and series.

Hidden Angels is the thirteenth book in Carolyn Arnold's Detective Amanda Steele series. As always with a Carolyn Arnold novel, Hidden Angels captivated me from the very first page and never let go. I have read every book in the Detective Amanda Steele series and loved each one.

Hidden Angels kept me glued to the pages as the secrets and suspense poured out page after page. Hidden Angels is a great yet sad story. I love how Carolyn starts with the end and then leads us through how it happened.

In Hidden Angels, an eight-year-old girl was taken in broad daylight while her parents were right there. Twenty-three years later, the girl's body was found inside the wall of a church. The priest was shot in the process, which led to the discovery of the body. Did the shooting of the priest have anything to do with the body in the wall?

Detective Amanda Steele and her partner, Detective Trent Stenson, have a long list of suspects to question, as the priest is not revealing anything about his congregation. Is the priest trying to protect his congregation, or is he covering up for himself? What is going on with this priest? Why was he shot? Who shot the priest?

Amanda and Trent’s investigation uncovers many hidden secrets that do not want to be revealed. Each clue leads to another, and just when you think you have it all figured out bam! You’re turned in another direction, taking you back to where you began, trying to figure out again what happened.

Amanda and Trent’s investigation reveals the girl's life story in the wall and what may have happened to her over the years. Who took the girl and why? I love the profiling aspects of stories like these. I also appreciate how crime scenes have their own stories to tell.

I have to say that Carolyn Arnold is one of the best storytellers I have ever read. Her stories keep me glued to the pages, and once I start reading, I know I won’t be able to stop until I find out what happened. Yes, I know that once I start one of Carolyn’s novels, I’ll be tied up for a while.

I highly recommend Hidden Angels to all crime thriller fans! Grab a copy of Hidden Angels today!

Amanda and Trent are sent to investigate the case of the body of a teenager found inside a wall in a church. Once the investigation starts they'll face many incongruencies, why did the man that tried to shoot the priest in the church claim the priest is guilty and knew what was going on? What was really going on? Who was the girl? And dig they do, they'll bring to light a kidnapping case together with rape and domestic violence. They'll also see themselves involved with the death of an old woman who saw a box being carried into the church and the kidnapping of her granddaughter. It's a sad and dark story with light parts when Amanda keeps on talking about her daughter Zoe or when she thinks about Trent being more than her partner. Hidden Angels is also well-written, fast-paced and good entertainment!
I thank Ms. Arnold, her publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC.

Heart wrenching, twisty, dark, police procedural and more. The prologue had me squirming because sadly things like this happen world wide on continuous bases. It was implied and handled deftly. Detective Amanda Steele is the epitome of working single mothers who lover their child and their job. She is passionate about both and can rush fiercely in instead of waiting. Her partner Trent is just as intense, but a little more laid back. The blurb provides a solid bases of what transpires, but its Amanda and Trents interaction, the way they do their jobs which we get to feel and understand as we go along with them that makes this series stand out. Thank you for the advance copy. I freely share my honest views and opinions. #HiddenAngels #DetectiveAmandaSteele #CarolynArnold #Bookouture #NetGalley

Attention grabbing and highly addictive! Arnold's Amanda Steele series is always top notch when it comes to having a detailed crime plotted out to take the detectives on the ride of their lives as we readers delight in the hijinks and the behind the scenes drama playing out. This particular story has a lot of twists that we weren't expecting and keeps us on our toes as we are trying to figure out who the culprits are. There's still some tension between Amanda and Trent that still hasn't played out, but maybe one day. I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone who enjoys a strong female lead who always gets to the bottom of the crime and sees justice is served. Well detailed crime scenes, a well oiled police team and always lots of drama and emotions flying.
