What’s a staid, predictable grandmother to do when…
She has a first andonly one night stand with a man who makes her feel all the best things a woman can feel…and she’s so scared she runs…
And when he walks into her place of work on a first date with someone else?
She dives to the floor to hide, that’s what.
And so it begins for Laurel Tabor, a longtime widow who did one wild, crazy thing only to have her best mistake walk all the way into her life.
Nick St. John has wondered for weeks what happened to the lovely Laurel, a woman he fell hard for too quickly. Finally accepting that he’d never find her again, he returns to online dating…only to walk into the diner where she works in Dickens.
But Laurel’s not interested in a repeat of that fabulous night and Nick is determined to prove that sometimes fast can be oh-so-right.
Especially when he learns his former son-in-law is now married to Laurel’s daughter and he has stumbled into an extended family he didn't know he needed.
How can Nick woo a reluctant woman when they share a loving, but nosey, family?
Read this warmhearted, small town Christmas, later-in-life rom-com and laugh, cringe, and cry as this widow and widower come to accept that Dickens holiday magic can give them a second chance at love.

The story is a spicy/sweet, holiday-themed tale with a great cast of characters. The town of Dickens is a small town and Dorrit’s Diner is the happening place to be. The town revolves around Christmas all year long and has holiday traditions, like the tree-lighting ceremony, snowman-building competitions, shopping at the quaint shops, and even a Dance Marathon. It isn’t just for the locals, because people come from all around to enjoy that atmosphere.
Widow Laurel Tabor has devoted her life to her daughter, Trix, after the death of Keith early on in their marriage. She had a toddler and gave up everything to raise her child, and really never had time to grieve their loss. Her one attempt at dating didn’t go well, so she closed off that part of her life. She lives in an apartment and does engage with other residents, but going to a casino really wasn’t something she enjoyed. Meeting a nice-looking man in the elevator had her doing something completely out of context, following him to the bar, talking for hours, and going back to his room. They connected, she panicked and left while he was in the shower.
Back in Dickens on shift at Dorrit’s in walks a frequent visitor from towns away—and a new man. What a shock to see Nick from the Casino. Hiding from him was crazy—she is the only waitress on shift and would have to serve them. What was he doing in Dickens?
The story was a beautiful and well-told story of two people, both had lost their spouses and had not moved on. Their one-night-stand at the Casino was magical, for both of them, but what now? But in this story, stranger things will continue to happen. How will Laurel handle all these new surprises?
“Life has a funny way of working out.”
“In Dickens, it’s as if we’ve been given more time to smell the pine, see the smiles, hear the cheery voices. Sometimes, I swear I hear distant bells. And it begins tonight.” --Jett
What a beautiful, heartfelt story of love, loss, and new beginnings. I loved the chemistry between Nick and Laurel, and while he is more willing to be open to the relationship, she wants to keep it a secret. She fears how it could affect them and the future if things don’t work out. But is worrying about what may never happen worth not taking a risk? Do you pass up a chance to have a wonderful loving relationship or avoid it so you don’t suffer loss down the road?
“It’s Dickens. We decided long ago that there’s something magical here. It softens hearts, opens minds, and brings peace to those who need it.”
I thought it was very refreshing to have a love story about an older couple. It was a delightful change of pace.
Laurel and Nick meet by chance at a hotel. Laurel is on a girl's getaway with some friends and Nick is on a rest stop while on his way to his new home. They have an instant connection and have a glorious evening together.
Laurel panics in the morning and runs out while Nick is in another room. She scurries home to Dickens to relive her memories of the encounter. What she doesn't expect is to see Nick in the diner where she works...on a date with another woman!
Nick wanted to see Laurel again, but after she ditched him, he isn't sure how she feels. He is lonely and ready to settle down again, but Laurel seems to be hesitant to move on even though she lost her husband decades ago.
They have a further connection: Nick's former son-in-law (he has lost his daughter) is married to Laurel's daughter and they have recently had a baby. Nick is anxious to take on a grandfather role to the little boy since his son-in-law had 2 children with Nick's daughter.
Laurel must now decide if she wants to take another chance on love.
So cute and showcases the difficulties of moving on after losing a spouse. Very heartwarming story.

Laurel and Nick shared a night at a casino and she left him without saying goodbye. They are both widowed and their connection was more than either expected. A few weeks after he had moved to Dickens she sees her in a coffee show which shocks them both because he did not know she lived in the town he just moved to. They find out they have family connections which makes them spend time together and while Nick is ready to move ahead with Laurel she does not seem to be ready for that. Will Nick get his wish for Christmas and a life with Laurel or will Laurel stay buried in her grief?.

I had a hard time finishing this book. It started out well, but later, it started having too much family drama and hypocrisy. I just didn't understand the protagonist, Laura's mood changes and being hypocritical of her mom's new relationship when she was doing the same exact thing with her new relationship with Nick who she had just met. If she still wanted a relationship with her dead husband after several years, she should have never gotten with Nick to begin with. The storyline was interesting, but I didn't like the characters.
I found this book discounted on Amazon The whole story is about an almost 60F that hasn't grieved her husband in probably 40 years. And she's aggravating everyone around, including the man who loves her. She's acting like a wishy-washy teenager (I want; I don't want a minute later) and the end was just too late for me. She wasn't even married that long and made her late husband like the epitome of everything male. Almost didn't finish the book.
I appreciated the romance between this "mature" couple who found love when they least expected it. It’s relatable how life can surprise us, especially during the holidays. The blend of family connections, the warmth of a charming town, and the magic of the season come together beautifully, making this a heartfelt holiday read.
Part of the Dickens Holiday Romance, a short novella size Christmas story. Widow Laurel Tabor and Nick St. John both in their 50's had a one night stand. The story is well written with its ups and downs and a happy ending. I found their story to be well worth reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Second Chance Dance by Bonnie Edwards is a short small town romance between two older widowers. The small town of Dickens is not a boring place. It is a magical place with plenty of big city drama.

Second chance at a lifetime partner. Both had great marriages that ended too soon. A chance encounter led to a second chance for romance and a chance for a lifetime relationship with the potential for marriage. I enjoyed reading this story.
This was such a fun and enjoyable story. Laurel and Nick fell hard for each other but it seemed to fast. Nick had quite a job to convince Laurel despite their extended family. This was a great story.
