Is this simply a fantasy of Katherine's damaged psyche? Or have her own demons finally escaped to torment her?

In fact, subtract the retro romance of the rich eighties from the "Dark Veils" (dating not on the Internet, fucking in a closet during a party, and that's all) - there will be an unintelligible mess about a girl who is not adequate and two villains, one is dumber than the other. Well, some people like that. ("To whom and the mare bride").

Начало 80-х, новоизбранный президент Рейган противопоставляет депрессивной эре Картера новые надежды и возможности, поднимает моральный дух сограждан, на смену прежним упадническим настроениям приходит желание радоваться жизни и развлекаться. Прекрасная молодая супружеская пара, Роберт и Ребекка собирается на вечеринку, где, без сомнения будут самыми красивыми. Муж дарит ей нитку черного гаитянского жемчуга, эта третья годовщина свадьбы и у них уже подрастает малыш, но взаимная страсть сильна как в первый день. В доме играет пластинка, игла застревает на царапине, Пиаф раз за разом повторяет одну фразу из "Осенних листьев", маленький Джек смотрит на родителей сверху и это последний раз, когда он видит папу с мамой вместе.

Спустя тридцать лет в этот таунхаус въезжает Кэтрин. Молодая привлекательная карьеристка, она пережила нервный срыв, там еще, как водится, набор из "во все тяжкие", посредством которых пыталась минимизировать боль от травматичного детства. Вы ж понимаете, что всякая девица, имевшая возможность окончить престижный университет и купить через несколько лет дом - после лечения в психушке, заметьте, должна иметь в анамнезе, как минимум, жестокого отчима. Кэтрин еще на таблетках, но в целом уже в порядке, устраивается в юридическую фирму подруги, для приведения в порядок дома нанимает специального человека, Джон педант и буквалист в том, что касается инженерных сетей и техники безопасности, но на редкость привлекательный мужчина и кажется у них намечается кое-что большее, чем рабочие отношения.

С домом, однако, что-то явно не так. Новую хозяйку беспокоят странные звуки - то щелчки, вроде от колпачка ручки, то старая песня, явно с винила, потому что пластинка все время заедает на одной фразе. Еще сны, удивительно яркие, галлюцинаторные, на грани между явью и небытием, когда не можешь понять, приснилось или было с тобой в действительности. Повторяющиеся эпизоды разнузданной костюмированной вечеринки, вроде той, которой в кинговом "Сиянии" отель "Оверлук" соблазнял Джека Торренса. А учитывая прежние проблемы героини с алкоголем и веществами, сходство разительно, хотя сравнение сильно не в пользу Джона Харрисона

На самом деле, вычти из "Темных завес" романтику ретро богатых восьмидесятых (знакомства не в интернете, трах в стенном шкафу во время вечеринки, и вот это вот все) - останется невразумительная муть про девицу не в адеквате и двух злодеев, один другого тупее. Что ж, кому-то и такое нравится. ("Кому и кобыла невеста").

If these walls could talk what stories would they tell? Would they get the stories right? Every detail? Or do we need the ghosts of those who came before to come tell their own stories. Kathryn has moved into a run down home and is looking to get it back to the beauty it once was but there’s more than dust and cobwebs to worry about. John wrote a great story. A well placed burn that drops some subtle foreshadowing before an exciting climax. Find out for yourselves if the ghosts are able to get their peace.

There's nothing better than a thriller with some vengeful ghosts, and Passing Through Veils has all the chills, seduction, and psychological intrigue you could want. There are some Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca vibes, so if you're a fan of Gothic literature, pick this one up.

I'm still weirdly fascinated by Warren Wright, though. Damnit. Why do bad guys have to be sexy?

Passing Through Veils, by John Harrison is a perplexing paranormal thriller with twists and turns to keep readers guessing. Deceit and intrigue mark this cold case story delves into an unsolved murder that took place 30 years ago. But the dead don’t rest and may be out for revenge.
