The Echoes of Today is the second book in The Fractured Reality Series, and it absolutely lives up to the first! Picking up right where book one left off, we follow Michael, Madeline, and their family (both real and chosen) as they search for safety after the horrors of the school they’d been living in.
This book doesn’t shy away from heartbreak. The threats are bigger, the losses cut deeper, and the group faces violent separation. Survival blurs the line between right and wrong, yet Michael and Madeline, despite their youth, continue to step up as leaders, determined to battle the evil closing in. Their dream of building a supportive community flickers with hope, but there’s always another obstacle waiting.
One of my favorite things is the setting in the Blue Mountains. The writing feels grounded in home, with subtle Australian turns of phrase and respectful Indigenous references woven in beautifully. It gives the story such an authentic, local voice.
If you’re a fan of gritty survival stories with heart, tension, and strong characters, this series is for you. Fans of The Walking Dead will be hooked!

Echoes of Today leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat. It is very well written and the plot was enjoyable and helped you relate to the feelings of the characters at the time.
I highly recommend the book to any future readers. Both Book 1 and Book 2 are must-reads!

This second book picks right up from the intense ending with the group on the run from the horde. They rush to find a new place to call home, and battle with the losses they've faced and the survivors guilt.
With all they have gone through, they struggle with who to trust and are wary of any survivors they come across, but they use their instincts and empathy to guide their choices.
With Michael and Maddie running their new community, they deal with the pressure of leadership and making decisions for a group that depends on them, and figure out how to tackle the new enemy threat they face.
It's a gritty survival story, facing unhinged villains with a thirst for power and control, and continuing to escape the infected.
You get a deeper glimpse at the causes of the virus, the threats lurking in the background, and the horrific corruption and violence.

Set once again in a gritty, reimagined Australia, the story moves at a relentless pace while giving us time to sit with the characters and feel their growth. The world expands in bold, dangerous ways, but it’s the quiet, human moments—the betrayals, the bonds, the impossible decisions—that truly echo.

Reading this after the first book, I am happy that we are finally starting to get away from the walking dead story. I do love that she decided to do a wandering perspective vs. A set one in certain moments. I do however think that because it is written that way, the characters are repeating the same things twice.
Im surprised that this is as suspenseful as the first and starting to really cause the characters to question their morals. Having the VFD's start to become a side threat, i think was inevitable but didnt expect it so soon.
I am also surprised and supportive that she is not afraid to put her characters into traumatic situations. That is not something that you see very often now.
I really did enjoy this and the many suspenseful things leading up to the third book. I am curious and excited to see where we go for the rest of the story.

What I love most is how Magda effortlessly offers multiple perspectives without relying on chunky dialogue, allowing the story to flow with grace while building a complex and immersive world.
This installment dives even deeper into the political conspiracies hinted at in the first book, peeling back layers of corruption, power, and control that feel disturbingly relevant.
And that ending! The subtle yet powerful cliffhanger sets up the next book perfectly. It hints at real transformation and growth — especially for one character whose journey feels like it’s only just beginning.

If you loved The Tyranny of Tomorrow, The Echoes of Today takes everything up a notch. The stakes are higher, the characters even more complex, and the world-building is just mind-blowing. What I really appreciated this time was the way the author dives deeper into the personal cost of survival in a fractured world. It’s a perfect balance of action, emotion, and thought-provoking moments. I couldn't put it down and now I’m already impatient for the next book!

I said I would read the next novel in the series and I did. (Okay so I am reviewing them all a little late!) but that's because once I started I couldn't put it down. I am as invested now.
So glad to find a fellow Aussie who can actually write about what it is really like and show what the Aussie spirit - in all its diversity - can do under harrowing circumstances.

Book 2 did not disappoint. Fantastic world building and a great mix of characters. Love that there are people from diverse backgounds.
