"If only..."
I love the Miles Brothers, especially Tristan and Elliot. The only reason why this book is a 3.5 is that I don't think Christopher is as good as any of his brothers. Maybe I was expecting too much, or just different. It's not that I totally dislike him. I just needed... more.
"He spins me again and then pulls me back to him with force, and when I’m in his arms like this and listening to him sing to me, nothing else seems to matter."
Christopher handles the marketing at Miles Media. He's a pretty busy guy, and loaded just like his brothers. He's the fun one, I guess. Never had a relationship, doesn't allow anything to get too serious, likes his women in pairs. I get that. However, I also found him bratty, entitled, and childish - his brothers call him spoiled, and I think that really is the right word for him.
"If I want to love someone like Hayden, I need to step up and be the man that she deserves."
Hayden is (and I hate this term) an average girl. Not the model type, not high-maintenance. She works at her parents' farm for a living. She doesn't have boatloads of money she can throw around. She's not that experienced when it comes to love or sex. She's not spoiled, she's real. She was just OK for me.
"Don’t look at me like that," she whispers.
"Like what?"
"Like I’m your next meal."
My eyes rise to hers. "Maybe you are."
Both Chris and Hayden are backpacking. They both want a do-over, to find themselves, even though not in the same way. They end up at the same hostel in Barcelona.
The chemistry between them is undeniable, but so are the differences. Christopher is not used to hostels or a 'normal' life. Hayden is not used to luxury or squandering money. There's no way these two can be a thing, unless... he doesn't tell her who he is. To her, he's a simple guy, when he's far from it.
"You’ve given me a semi in that bikini."
I curl my lip in disgust. We begin to walk back to our room.
"What is it with you and semi anyway?" I ask.
"What do you mean?" He frowns.
"Semikissed me, semidick . . . you seem to have a lot of semi going on."
"You couldn’t handle the lot."
The banter between them is great, and I love that Hayden doesn't take his shit. She's not going to be an easy one to get, and he does come on pretty strong, but she's not having it. However, he's not used to giving up, so they become friends... and from then on, a lot more than just that.
I loved how they became close bit by bit and that it took them time to trust each other. I loved all the cuddling, and I definitely loved all the sex. And just like that, twelve months together flew by.
"What is this?" he whispers. Love.
"You know what it is." You love me. His eyes search mine.
"We could win the war and blow up the world."
Their holidays come to an end, though, and he needs to come clean about who he is. He knows she's not going to take it well, and, to be honest, there were some parts where I wanted to smack him for being a jerk, and then some. Some of the things he says are hurtful and unnecessary and they didn't sit well with me at all.
"What didn’t you believe in?"
"That someone could make me feel the way you do."
The thing is, he doesn't know any better. All of this, giving his heart to someone else and trusting her with it, is uncharted territory for him. It's not that he doesn't love her, he just doesn't know how to do it right. He doesn't know how to show it. He is kind of fucked up in a way. My heart broke for both of them, because she's getting hurt in the process and she surely doesn't deserve it.
"I never believed in love. I thought it was a fantasy that only lonely people talked themselves into needing."
In the middle of all of it, we get his brothers and his family, which was absolutely great. Her family is simple, but loving. Eduardo, the kid they meet in Spain, was a wonderful addition and his relationship with Christopher will really melt your heart.
And yes, there are some funny scenes because Christopher is totally clueless about most things. Being honest, sometimes it's funny, while other times he was just annoying AF to me.
"You didn’t need me to be anything else. I was enough."
Can someone else show you who you really are, or make you a better person just by being there?
Yes. They are both different, better people from having known each other. And that's the best do-over ever.
