She's just a script consultant, standing in front of a director, asking him to step back and let her do her job...
Jess should have known better than to fall for the English department's silver fox, but now she's left picking up the pieces after catching him cheating with a student and stealing the credit for her research paper. Desperate for a fresh start, she accepts a job as a script consultant on a new TV adaptation of the Regency novel, Anne of Arden - and no one knows Georgiana Scott's work better than she does.
Swapping the world of academia for the glamour of TV is supposed to be her big comeback. But standing in her way is Nathan Lambert, a famous director on a mission to sabotage his unfaithful ex-wife's latest work project.
As the two knock heads over every detail of the script, sparks fly, tempers flare, and their unexpected chemistry is anything but scripted. In a world where the lines between reality and fiction blur, can Jess and Nathan rewrite their own happy ending?
Love Off Script was a cute and fluffy audiobook. A little weirded out that I listened to three romance books in a row yesterday, but oh well. At least one had fantasy and the other had mystery. Same, but different vibes.
Anyways, back to this book. I absolutely adored Jess and Nathan throughout this book. Though, no matter how many times I shake my head or vow to throat punch someone, the miscommunication between people drives me absolutely bonkers. I hate that trope. My eyes deserved a much-needed rest from rolling around so much.
Other than that, I liked the chemistry and the side characters too. Will have to look into other books by Laura!
This was a very cute and fluffy rom com. I enjoyed it. The story was cute as well. 4 stars it was a quick and easy read. Thank you to netgalley for providing me with an advanced review copy I. Exchange for a review.
3.5 stars 🌟 what a sweet celebrity romance 🎬📖🏰 i liked the filming aspect of this and how well this couple actually worked together 😊 nathanjess were cute for most of the book but i loathe the miscommunication trope & that is what ultimately brought my rating down 🥲
a special thank you to netgalley and embla books for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
I enjoyed this book and the glimpse into seeing what a script consultant does. Jess takes a break from her current job after her boss and ex betrays her by taking credit for a research paper she wrote. She decides to try her hand at being a script consultant for a TV adaptation on a novel she knows by heart. After initiallly clashing with the director they begin to work together cohesively and they also develop a romantic relationship. Both characters exhibited great growth and development, were interesting, and had great chemistry. The secondary characters were engaging and the plot was captivating. Overall a well written and enjoyable book!
This was an enjoyable read. I liked the characters, main and secondary, and the storyline. Jess ended up manipulated into a situation that leaves her pretty much starting over again, but interestingly enough so did Nathan. While both characters are coming from prior relationships that were less than great, they both take different paths to growth. Jess takes the high road and decides to make something of herself following a different path than originally planned; Nathan is seeking revenge. The amount of character growth that Jess experiences over the months that she is working on the set of Anne of Arden is admirable. She achieves this despite her parents trying to continue their own manipulations. With the help of the cast and crew, and a burgeoning relationship with Nathan, Jess really shines. Nathan is a tougher nut to crack, but he gets there… eventually. It is the entire cast of characters that makes this book what it is - a fun romcom with heart. I recommend this to anyone trying to figure out where they fit in after a major life change or anyone looking for a light read. Many thanks to Embla Books for an invitation to read a digital advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are honest and my own.
Released on March 11th, 2025 Rating: 4.5✨(rounded to a 5 because it is definitely over a 4) Spice: 1.5🌶️
I want to take a moment to thank Laura Starkey for writing this fantastic book, at the publisher Embla Books and NetGalley for providing me the opportunity to read this book as an ARC. I know I’m behind on writing and posting this review but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I absolutely loved the classic UK humor and verbiage. If this were made into a movie NO changes would be needed because this is exactly what I would love to see!
This book was sweet, funny, emotional and perfect. The characters all had depth, personality and worked so well together. The playfulness between the main characters and the other characters was such a delight. Jess and Nathan were brilliant together and helped each other to grow into the best versions of themselves. I am heading over to the kindle store now to see if I can find Laura’s other novels!
“…he wasn’t the type of man who would cope well with unintentionally inspiring mirth” is how I will be referring to laughing at someone and not with them henceforth.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed it. Again just wish I could have read it in the sun and in peace than ill 🤣 I love jess and the characters and I like the way it felt mostly believable if sometimes cheesy 😁
REVIEW cw: gaslighting, mentions of coercive control, misogyny, mentions of bereavement, grief, foster care, anxiety
Thirty-year-old introvert Jess Mackenzie should have known better than to fall for the English department's silver fox, but now she's left picking up the pieces after catching him cheating with a student and stealing the credit for her research paper. Desperate for a fresh start, she accepts a job as a script consultant on a new TV adaptation of the Regency novel, Anne of Arden - and no one knows Georgiana Scott's work better than she does. Swapping the world of academia for the glamour of TV is supposed to be her big comeback. I've really enjoyed all of Laura Starkey's previous books, and this was no exception. As always, there were plenty of the author's witty one-liners that made me snort laughing, as well as some truly swoon-worthy ones. Though I initially found Jess a bit flat as a main character, I think that might have been intentionally part of her development arc. She really grew on me once she was on set, and I loved that she could start showing her more assertive side. I also LOVED her confrontations later on in the story, and how supportive and kind she was to Sara on both occasions. Those scenes were SO satisfying, especially the second one. I liked Nathan immediately. His POV made me cackle quite a few times, and I loved the scene where his best friend, Rob, saw the terrible rehearsal and Nathan had to explain his devious plans. Nathan's initial intentions were diabolical, so I was glad Jess was able to make him see the bigger picture and how his need to hurt his ex would ultimately hurt many innocent people. But, I would have still loved to see more scenes of them butting heads, as enemies-to-lovers is my favourite trope. For me, there wasn't nearly enough disagreement between them to truly describe it as such. Instead, I found Nathan's fascination with Jess quite instalove early on. However, he was also adorably smitten as the story progressed, so I'll forgive him. The chemistry was palpable, and I thought their intimate moments were beautifully romantic. What I really loved was the genuine connection they formed as the story progressed. I appreciated how Nathan was able to open up to Jess about his childhood, but my heart broke for him when he recollected the way adults who should have helped him spoke about him being 'damaged'. My heart ached for how he was treated after the separation from his wife, and how she'd made him feel. But, I loved Rob. Their friendship felt so authentic and I loved their banter, but also that Rob's family had stepped up when Nathan was alone. I also appreciated Rob's intervention late in the story. They were hilarious together, but it was so clear how much they loved each other like brothers. There were some interesting supporting characters. Jess's friends Ben and Vix seemed fun. I liked that they were so supportive of her, and gave great advice. I also really liked Serena. She seemed sweet, and I loved how Jess stood up for her career when Nathan was blind-sided by his need for vengeance. The teensy tease at the premiere made me giddy for her. Rafe was simultaneously hilarious and annoying, but I loved his dancing 'test', and Nathan's reaction was perfect. It was also fun to catch up with It was fun to catch up with Amy and Sam, and I loved their advice for Jess. Jess’s parents were obnoxiously awful, so I was so happy when she took her friend's advice at the restaurant, but most of all, I applauded her finally finding her voice after the 'controversy' and giving them some home truths. As for Miranda, Nathan's ex-wife. She was so manipulative. One of the things I always admire is when people who've experienced a difficult past are able to confront it and seek therapy, and I LOVED that Nathan finally did the work. I loved the ending, and I absolutely ADORED nervous Nathan. He was so adorable. While I would have preferred more conflict early on, this was still a lot of fun.
Overall Rating: ❤️❤️❤️♥️ Heat Rating: 🔥.5
*Thanks to the publisher for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. Love Off Script is out now in the UK*
I’m not sure if this is just a coincidence or if I’ve just been subconsciously gravitating toward them, but I have read a lot of Hollywood/TV romances lately. Not that I’m complaining 🤷♀️. It’s good for comparison. I did like this one! It was different from others I’ve read recently in that it is VERY British haha 🇬🇧. I was not prepared for it, but I definitely enjoyed it.
Love Off Script is the story of Jessica Mackenzie, academic/regency romance expert 📝, and Nathan Lambert, famous TV director 📺. After catching her coworker boyfriend in the act of cheating, Jess is ready for a change. She takes a job writing for the new television adaptation of her all-time favorite novel, Anne of Arden. What she doesn’t know is that the director of the show is out to sabotage its production because his heinous ex-wife wrote the script. Getting his ex-wife’s dumpster fire of a show to production would be the ultimate form of revenge for Nathan, but with Jess standing in his way fighting for a faithful adaptation (and with sparks flying between them), it may be harder than he thinks …
I really enjoyed this read! It was quick, fun, and simple. Like I mentioned earlier, it is very British. That is not a bad thing, by any means, but there was definitely a lot of slang and vernacular that I wasn’t as familiar with. It did make for a very fun read, though, since I read it in my head with a British accent (although, admittedly not a very good one) 😂.
I really liked Jess. She had spunk 💃! I loved watching her character growth from beginning to end and seeing her come alive with tenacity. Her relationship with her parents was interesting to read about. It gave context as to why she was so timid in the beginning. She came into her own by the end, and I love that she finally stood up to her parents for consistently putting her down and got to say her piece to Johnathan.
Nathan, on the other hand, was not my favorite. I did not like his attitude, and it seemed very petty for a grown man to be risking so many people’s careers, including his own, just to get some semblance of “revenge” on his ex. Like dude … really? I’m glad Jess called him out on that BS because that was some wild behavior on his part. I truly do not think that man handled a single thing well in this entire book, yet somehow still managed to get Jess to forgive him after a truly ridiculous third-act breakup (despite Jess’s very clear communication, I might add)🙄. Men, amirite?
That was really my only complaint with this book! I thought the plotting was clever. It was giving on-set Bridgerton vibes. I enjoyed the side characters tremendously (looking at you, Rafe 👀). It was also quite funny. I love a book that can get a little chuckle out of me. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a cutesy lil’ rom-com 📖 or reading about telly production (see what I did there 😉), and I would definitely read another Starkey book in the future!
Thank you to NetGalley, Laura Starkey, and Embla Books for the eARC in exchange for an honest review! All opinions shared are my own 😊
Meet Jess, our 30-something heroine who works as an academic researcher and specialises in literature from the 17th and 18th centuries. When she finds out that her partner - romantic and professional - has been cheating on her, she takes her life into her own matter for the the first time ever and decides to take a job offer to work on the new tv production of Anne of Arden as a script specialist/consultant. Little does she know that taking this opportunity will turn her professional career around, as well as her love life when she meets the handsome producer Nathan, who, to her dismay, makes her time on set super frustrating.
Like the author‘s other novel, The Spare Room, Love Off Script tugged on my heart strings quite a bit. I wouldn’t necessarily appoint it to the romance in this (don’t get me wrong it’s great), but more to the fact that the process and personal development of Jess is so well-written and believable. I loved to witness how she came into her own in the months she worked on Anne of Arden and I felt the biggest moment of pride when she FINALLY stood up to her parents who were such idiots. Ben and Vix were great friends and supporting characters and so were the others from the set. I‘m so looking forward to more novels by the author as I love her writing style, it’s descriptive, whimsical, detailed, funny and a bit different to the one of other current romance writers (this is in no way meant negatively towards other romance writers, I just don’t have the right words to say what I actually mean). 💕💫
Fun, witty and light hearted, this is definitely one of the books you could read on holiday, enjoy and then promptly forget.
Jess and Nathan have a sparkling chemistry, and the witty one-liners and fun bits of dialogue really make the story entertaining. While they aren’t ‘enemies’ as such, they are very much opposed to each others presence, and I love how they come together over making the perfect production. I think the film as a backdrop is also very cool and brings its own unique backdrop to their story.
Fast, fun but ultimately fleeting, I think the lack of emotional depth and miscommunication is what really brings down a cute little novel.
Love Off Script was such a wonderful read. Forced proximity is one of my favorite tropes. And nothing says forced proximity quite like having to work on a set together. I was rooting for the main characters straight from the meet cute. I do think the pacing at the beginning was a little slow, but once I got into the story I couldn't put the book down. Thank you Netgalley and Embla Books for the ARC!
This is a sweet and easy read with a fun enemies-to-lovers dynamic set in the world of TV production. Jess, a script consultant seeking a fresh start, clashes with Nathan, a director with his own agenda. Their banter is sharp, and the premise is engaging, but the story leans too much on dialogue, lacking the emotional depth needed to make the romance truly impactful.
While Jess’s character growth is well done, the connection between her and Nathan feels more like verbal sparring than deep emotional tension. Still, it’s an enjoyable, lighthearted romance for those who love workplace tension and witty exchanges.
3.5 - another book where an abusive man is used as a plot point which, as a survivor, severely frustrates me. that doesnt mean this wasn't written well, because it was, and it was enjoyable! however I wasn't wowed or in love with the characters or story, saying that, I'd still pick this author up again
Jess should've known better than to get involved with the English departments silver fox. Now she's left picking up the pieces after she discovers him cheating and taking the credit for her research paper. Looking for a fresh start and some time away she agrees to become a script consultant on a tv adaptation of Anne of Arden and since she's the authors biggest fan she knows there's no one better suited for the job. But standing in her way is the director Nathan, who's also just been cheated on and is trying to take revenge on his ex-wife by sabotaging her latest project. As the two fight over the script, unexpected chemistry soon arises, but can the two put their differences to get their own happy ending?
I loved this! I flew through this in a couple of hours as I couldn't put it down. Jess and Nathan are both flawed in their own way, and I think that with them both dealing with the same trauma in their previous relationships, it really brought them together. I enjoyed seeing parts of the tv adaptation and how well it was written into the story. I loved that he fell first and that this was a slow burn with no spice and that there was a lot of pining and glances before they admitted how they felt about each other. The writing had me gripped and the character development was done so well watching Jess take charge of her own life and realise that she'll always be the main character of her own story was very empowering. I highly recommend.
Love Off Script is a perfect romance. I loved reading this from the first chapter. I enjoyed the conflicts, the resolutions, the characters, everything. This was my first Laura Starkey book but it was SO great that I’ll definitely be reading more of her books asap!!
Cute and sweet might be the best way to describe it. Loved the tad of period piece romance thrown in and really just wanted to know more about her historian friend. The internal conflict felt a bit overdone but it worked. Who knew rewriting a whole screenplay on the fly was so easy?
the smut wasnt crazy, like i personally wouldnt even class it as fluff, and the character building and plot actually made sense unlike a lot of these romcom love books that ive read. I thought the whole book was just really sweet, and quite interesting
Another fantastic book by Laura Starkey. Both the romance and the comedy have been ratcheted up again, with fantastic characters and a really cool set-up (who doesn't love a big budget period drama?)
As a lover of The Spare Room I went into this with high expectations but unfortunately this one just wasn’t my favourite.
I hate to say but I found this one a bit slow going and it took me a while to finish it because I felt that not much was really happening. Don’t get me wrong the romance was lovely and I really liked all the characters but the plot itself just seemed to drag a little bit. My only problem with their relationship was the miscommunication.
I did however really enjoy the last 30% of the story as I thought it really picked up but other than that I didn’t feel a connection to this story as I did the other.
I enjoyed the premise of this story, the filming aspect and the different scenes and sets and watching a show be made I thought it was a great basis for a love story.
Thank you to Netgalley, Laura Starkey and Embla books for this ARC.
3.5 rounded up - this was cute and an easy read. Nothing spectacular but I liked the chemistry and the tension between Jess and Nathan. There was some miscommunication which I always dislike very strongly and it bothered me here but it didn’t damper the story for me that much.
An academic whose field of expertise is Regency romance literature, finds her life up-ended and her career path altered. The contrast between British romance fiction of the early 1800’s and modern expressions of romance are expertly conveyed in this novel that doesn’t shy away from current issues.
