Jess is out on the trail looking for the killer, Ron Westfall, who murdered his former partner in cold blood while making the man’s wife and young son watch.
He then receives a wire with instructions from Frank Reedy to travel to Spruce to help out Matt Helm, a Texas Ranger. Helm was transferring the outlaw and killer, Alec Lynch, to the penitentiary when Lynch escaped, shot Helm and left him for dead.
Lynch took Helm’s pistol and horse and then found his extra Rangers badge. He began using the badge to pass himself off as a Texas Ranger to help escape capture.
Jess picks up Helm in Spruce and the two begin their search for Lynch, but fate seems to throw more problems at them, making the job of capturing Lynch much more difficult.

In 1990 Robert J. Thomas was sworn in as the full time mayor for the city of Westland, Michigan. He served twelve years, making him the longest serving mayor in Westland's history.
While he was mayor he wrote his first book titled, How to Run for Local Office, which has now sold over 25,000 copies worldwide.
He has written and published on Kindle, the Jess Williams Westerns series. Retired, he now lives in Mississippi with his wfe Jill.
This book was a good read. I like it when Jess is shown in a good light helping people. He's still a bad one to mess with and that makes for a good story. Have read every book and would highly recommend this series to all that enjoy a good western series.
I think Robert Thomas is having a difficult time coming up with new stories. Either that or someone else is writing the new books. After reading the first hundred and thirty books you get to know Jess Williams. The last couple of books are not written about the Jess we learned about in prior stories. Hopefully Robert will start writing again and will also find someone to edit his new books.
I'm a Jess Williams groupie and usually give 4 or 5 stars. Unfortunately this one seemed a little tired and repetitious. It was Jess going through the motions. Dotting the i. Crossing the t's. Doing what you expect him to do and moving on to the next story. Perhaps the series has just ran out of steam. A soft 3.
Jess is still hunting and killing wanted men. He is also helping those he meets. It has been a long time since he has been to his hometown. The final few chapters in this book has Jess helping a Texas Ranger hunting the man who shot him and left him to die. The ranger's name is Helm.
If you like bad men who need justice, Jess Williams is your man. A Texas Ranger tries. To take in a bad man to prison but gets shot in the process. Jess is asked to help him. Along the way are many adventures.
