EPISODE 1 - Please note this is NOT the full book, but part one of a 6 part series. The full book will be available June 26th.
Veronica Summer is stuck in the dream job from hell.
The spunky New York reporter is offered the network's morning anchor position, but she doesn't want it because she's a night person. Then the network plays a trump card, promising her the evening anchor chair in three years. So the fiery redhead takes the plunge, with the ultimate gig waiting down the road.
Problem is, that road is filled with two am wake-up calls and the only social life she has is one with bats and raccoons. She quickly realizes she'll never survive the grind and decides the only way out is to get fired by being her snarky self on live television.
And the ratings skyrocket.
Veronica becomes the nation's It Girl, so the network makes her a celebrity contestant on its most popular nighttime dance competition show, Dance Off. While her journalistic credibility is shot to hell by the show's skimpy costumes, she's thrown into close contact with two incredibly attractive men; her dance partner and the show's sarcastic British judge.
And she soon discovers that love is the ultimate gig.
Nic Tatano is becoming one of my favourite authors for chicklit books – this book had me in stitches and I love the strong heroines! Especially the fiery spitfire redheads ^_^ I literally dropped all housework for the day to read this book in one sitting, I just had to!
This had me follow Veronica Summer the next It Girl – I loved her, sometimes she was too much, but that is her trade and I forgave her! I liked the chemistry she had with her best friend Scott – yes girls can have male best friends!! Her feisty attitude within journalism and her hilarious decisions in either trying to land the job, get rid off the job, or telling herself that she doesn’t ‘like the guy’. What I like about her as well, she has dreams and is not afraid to follow her dreams or even adjust those for the right reasons. She loves her job and loves what she’s doing and needs someone who can appreciate a woman’s career. Dexter is a very likeable character – and because I live in UK and I am surrounded by the English accent (I am Dutch) I know what Veronica and her friends felt like when they are subject to his accent – it still makes me melt at times! Dexter certainly made me melt many times – I could’ve done with a bit more romance in the story, but that is not a negative. I just really loved their chemistry and the fact they didn’t fell in love with eachother instantly in the first couple of chapters! I really liked reading about her female friends and Hal the newsstand person – they all filled their role and made me laugh and giggle loads! It such a feel-good book.
I love dancing and therefore this setting was perfect – I love it that Nic always adds news anchors or presidents use in the books. It makes it quite interesting to learn a bit about the news world or The Morning Show or even the Dance Off show. The story with her dance partner and the sudden appearance of her sister had me cringing (in a good way) and had me rooting more and more for Veronica, and I like it that not every relationship with their siblings is good or will ever be turned back to good.
This book made me feel good – and that was perfect and exactly what I expected from this book with a lovely and good story in between with a lot of very likeable characters! I just wish I met Scott’s wife at some point as well. She probably would’ve made a perfect addition to the story.
I can highly recommend this book to everyone! I will be looking for more books from Nic Tatano!
Before I get started, I need to thank the publishers at HarperCollins Impulse for allowing me access to this book, apologies for the delay!
This is the second book of Nic Tatano’s I’ve read and enjoyed- the first one I will link my review of here: Twitter Girl. It is written in a very familiar style to the first one, so I would like to see a little bit more change from the author, but generally speaking, I enjoyed this a lot more than Twitter Girl.
IT girl follows the story of Veronica Summer, who is currently vying hard for a promotion to become the face of her TV network, where she currently works as a presenter for the news. She gets roped into a different kind of promotion instead, to become a co-anchor on a morning show, which means getting up at stupid o’clock at night to film for the 6am broadcast. I felt every empathy with Veronica here, having previously worked early morning shifts in another life time (I worked in an airport for two years, hint: never work in an airport if you can help it!), and the early morning shifts are the worst types of shifts you will ever work, as #NAME soon finds out. Her body clock is completely messed up, her social life is non-resistant and half the time she doesn’t even know what day it is (ahhh I don’t miss it. Seriously, working night shift is so much easier!!). In an attempt to get herself fired from the position, she winds up being loved by the nation and after butting heads with a very attractive judge from the weekly competition show Dance Off (hello Strictly…), she winds up once again being manipulated into being a competitor on the show for the network’s ratings.
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did, as I’m not really a fan of competition shows myself. I enjoyed the characters and I had a good few moments where I wound up laughing out loud at this book because of what #NAME was up to. The pacing of the book was enjoyable, not too rushed and the characters had just enough to them to be likable.
I recommend this to readers who want something light and funny with some quirky characters, and of course, those who love strictly come dancing…
I had never read a book by Nic Tatano before, so I didn't know what to expect with this one. But the colourful cover and the interesting blurb instantly caught my attention in Netgalley. I read this light summer read in two sittings and enjoyed it. Nic Tatano creates an interesting story that also makes fun of the crazy world of the television: exorbitant salaries, scandals, have-beens and want-to-bes in reality show that make the whole country go crazy, cameras everywhere, no private life...
Also, Veronica is a strong heroine that you'll like from the begining. Not afraid of speaking her thoughts and a tough cookie. It was nice though to discover her sweetest side thanks to the British handsome judge. So in general, a fun light novel, with an interesting plot for this summer that will make you laugh and have a good time.
****Copy from NetGalley in return for an honest review****
My quest to read the most overdue of my NetGalley requests continued with this one - which has been waiting for longer than I care to admit! So long in fact that I couldn't remember what it was about - so it was a nice surprise that it was about a news anchor and a dance TV show (I could totally understand why I picked it out!).
Apart from making me feel like a hopeless underachiever (I'm older than Veronica and I'm definitely nowhere near as successful than her!) I really quite enjoyed it. There were a few plot strands that I didn't think quite worked, but over all it was a fun romp. I could have used more of the dance show, and perhaps slightly less love interests and complications to the relationship, but generally, it was a perfectly fun way to pass an afternoon.
This was a delightful, easy read that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
For me, the heroine is the most crucial part of any book. If I don't like or identify with the heroine, fuhgedboutit! With Veronica Summer, career-driven, not always Little Miss Sunshine, I completely identified. But the best part of this book was the hero, Dexter Bishop. Yum!
This book never lagged or lost its pace, and I loved that the heroine grew and that her priorities shifted by the end of book. Because that's what happens in real life, and it made this story that much more real for me.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a feel-good, laughter-filled, snark-filled romantic read.
"4.5 out of 5 stars!! This fast-paced romantic comedy throws you for more then one major twist and keeps you wanting for more! From Veronica's snarky attitude to her friend's southern "charms" to maneuvering through the conniving world of journalism, this novel is one that keeps pushing you through the paces and doesn't let go till the end."
