A FINANCIAL TIMES CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE YEAR

'Thrilling, heartfelt, and luminous' Vashti Hardy
'A stunning debut' Jasbinder Bilan
'The world-building here is so seamless it's almost unnoticeable' School Reading List

An original, middle grade fantasy debut awash with adventure. A determined heroine and a sinister villain clash to reveal river lore in a watery world of fantastical creatures and colossal challenges.

In a time and place which might be now, people with gills, outcast larkers, live in secret communities.

They have houseboats along the river. Concealing their gills from land lubbers, they scour the mudbanks, trade their finds and live off their wits. Thirteen-year-old Effra has been supporting her brother, Fleet, alone since their beloved grandfather died six months ago.

When merciless Rivermun, a larker gone bad, threatens Fleet, Effra's quests begins. Rivermun asks for the impossible - he wants to overpower Mother River, to possess the river serpent's pearl and for age-old debts to be settled. Effra must bargain with the imposing Mother River, dive into the underwater parts of the city, venture deep into the Rat Queen's lair and confront the terrible river serpent to save not only Fleet, but everything the larkers stand for. Luckily, she is not alone. She befriends a sentient sewer rat and a landlubber girl called Bow, who will help her in her quest.

The Girl with Gills by Becca Rogers reads like an update of the classic folk narrative or fairytale, imbued with a grittiness- maybe silt from the River Yore.

Effra (Effie) and her little brother, Fleet, are just about managing to live alone following the loss of their beloved Boppa. The siblings are Larkers, people so at one with the river, they even have gills. But their difference puts them at risk if their gills are spotted. Especially if a certain boat captain called Flynch spies them. These are, however, trifling concerns compared to the Rivermun. And he’s got an ancient grudge. And he’s coming to get them.
“One, two, buckle my shoe;
Three, four, scratch at the door…”

Larkers are brought up to fear and distrust land-dwellers, or (land) lubbers, but a girl named Bow spends her time mudlarking and researching, and appears to appreciate the river as much as Effie, and her kind. When Fleet disappears one day, Effie needs all the help she can get, maybe even from a pesky lubber.

And so starts a race against time (or specifically, the tide) to find and rescue Fleet. In order to do so, Effie must appease Mother River, take on the twisted Rat Queen, and what of Rivermun?

I loved the rich sensory detail of the river’s description and the larkers’ intuitive knowledge of their home.
The river people were brought to life through their folklore, especially their stories and traditions, passed down through generations. There are also various other texts interspersed through the book: a key to understanding Larker bubble language, an extract from a nursery rhyme (I’ve sampled here), other insights into the wider cultural and historical life of the Yore. These texts expand upon the world and add authenticity to the fantasy. The larkers’ language, which is accented and full of dialect, also shows their history and evolution as a group. They use fantastic idioms and exclamations based around rivers.

Twisty and full of adventure, with darkness that ebbs and flows like the Yore, The Girl with Gills is a great read for anyone 9+

This was an awesome adventure filled with curiosity, challenges and creatures.

I loved the setting of this book, it takes place mainly under the sea in a mysterious and magical world.
The writing was easy to follow and flowed nicely throughout the story and I loved the character names too.

Clay stole my heart, he was such a cutie!

This was a delight to read and I cant wait to read more from this author in the future!

Effra – Effie – is a larker. And she has gills – we eventually learn it is mudlarking for things to sell on for so long that has slowly given at least some people gills. But she and her baby brother have independence to go with the gills, for her grandfather has died, and apart from two honest larker friends as guardians they're alone. Things here seem to kick off when Effie meets Bow, one of us lubber-type land-based humans, but really get into top gear when a Big Bad arrives, fresh from the prologue, demanding the impossible – or else the brother has had it.

One problem with this fantasy is the way it delivers the quest for Effie. It's an earnest one for her, to get a MacGuffin and protect the brother she loves. But she first goes into a dangerous place to find someone dangerous, who demands a MacGuffin of their own – and then it turns out there's someone else dangerous she must risk going to see – and something they want first… There's a rich, layered fantasy world and there's throwing the kitchen sink at the girl before she's got started.

And I had queries about the building of that world, too – like, how much are we supposed to see an overlap with our world and this? This could be the Norfolk Broads, or basically anywhere with a river – they seem to swim past Parliament at one point – but then there are swarms of flying, biting nasty critters that glug out of the sand and have at you, as well as all the aquatic wonders. There's a general anti-gilled people feeling, as if they're akin to witches and gypsies.

Oh, and while I liked Bow, I never believed in her, with her bookishness, and her ability to scarper from her dad and potter around alone on a boat as and when needed. The agency given to juveniles fighting for their world without any adult help is just too much here. Finally, the sentiment that the Big Bad is just bad because he had an awful upbringing is both daft and too commonly repeated.

So it's with some surprise I see very few negative feelings about this whatsoever. Obviously people didn't dislike the way such an onerous mission was just dumped on Effie, or how the parents disappeared and nobody minded. I found this wishy-washy, they clearly found it distinctive enough to offset that. So, all power to them and the book, but for me three stars are too generous.

This was a delightful little read.

Aimed at younger people, this offers a perfect introduction to fantasy stories and will charm, delight and scare in turn. It moves along at a brisk pace, effortlessly setting the scene and then moving from one adventure to another as our main character tries her best to save her brother. She might not consider herself the bravest or strongest, but her love for her brother, her friends shines through brighter than anything else.

The Rivermun makes a delightfully scary villain, more so by his suit, how it makes him more mysterious and foreboding. He is the bogyman of legend and adds an extra layer to danger. The Rat Queen was also entertaining, although I wish more had been done with her and her fate.

Clay owns my heart, he is an absolute sweetheart and deserves all the cake in the world. All the characters were entertaining and well crafted.

It was like something out of a fairy tale at times, the cadence of the story, the pitch and speed. Highly recommend to anyone, old or young.

Thank you Net Gallery and House of Zeus for early access of the book

The Girl with Gills is a fun and adventurous children’s fantasy book, perfect for readers aged 8–13 who are just starting to explore the genre. It’s packed with action, imaginative creatures, and a strong emphasis on friendship and loyalty, which I really appreciated.

I especially loved the parts involving the rats, the Rat Queen, and Clay. The ending really picked up the pace, delivering lots of excitement and drama, which made for a thrilling conclusion.

That said, I did find the world-building a little underdeveloped at times. I struggled to visualise some of the settings, which made it harder to feel fully immersed in the story. Still, for younger readers who enjoy fantasy and are looking for a story full of adventure and heart, this book has a lot to offer.

A solid read that could be a great stepping stone into the world of fantasy fiction for middle-grade readers.

The Girl with Gills by Becca Rogers is a children's book full of surprises, adventures, friendship and, above all, lots of water. Ideal for younger readers to see that everyone has the courage to be a hero, no matter how small.

Dive in with Effre for this story and join her on a journey to save her little brother Fleet. In this book, you will already have no shortage of proverbs with water, watery references and new proverbs from the Larkers. A world of wonders and river magic.

The story itself is heartwarming about courage and friendships from unexpected quarters.

The quality of the writing in this book is second to none. When combined with a story full of heart and adventure, The Girl with the Gills is a rare piece of stroytelling mastery. To say I enjoyed this book is a massive understatement. Sure, the kids loved it, too, but did they appreciate the quality of the prose, the rhythm, the ebb and flow of tension? Well, yes, they did, but only because I wouldn't stop telling them about it. Can't wait for the second book. Author followed and one fan confirmed.

Reading this book was like rediscovering the sense of wonder I felt as a child when reading fantasy. I loved the idea of the larkers and their lives on the margins between water and land. Effra is a brilliant protagonist and the story itself is full of mystery and adventure. A genuinely unique and captivating book that's perfect for the 9-12 age group.

Also, where do I sign up for a Clay of my own?

A twist on mudlarking. I've read a few mudlarking books - which is fascinating, however this twist is of course: the girl with gills - she is a Larker. A part of the world, but hiding their gills in case of capture and experimentation.

This book mixes fantasy and the real world.

I wish I could give 4 and a half stars. I loved this book. I keep thinking of how this might've impacted me if I'd read it as a young teen. The story is interesting and gripping, with the most beautiful message.

I love the way the story comes across as though it is being told by a fellow larker. It's short, with such a sweet ending that showcases found family at its very best.
