The BRAND NEW pulse-pounding cat & mouse thriller from INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER Gemma Rogers How can one 12-hour night shift be so deadly?
I loved the anonymity, flexibility and solitude that working the night shift at Storage Queen gave me.
The unsociable hours paid well, helping me fund my university degree and giving me a quiet place to study while the world slept peacefully in their warm, cozy beds. It was the perfect job for me.
But that Friday night proved to be more than I bargained for when a man walked through the door, dragging a large suitcase.
My immediate instincts told me something was wrong.
That’s when my ordeal began.
I just had to make it through the night shift.
A pacy, heart stopping, page turning thriller for the fans of Shari Lapena and Lisa Jewell.

The Night Shift is a fast paced suspenseful thriller which centers on Nina who works at a 24 hour storage facility in order to pay for her medical school education. She usually spends her shift making rounds, looking at the security cameras, and studying. When she sees something suspicious, her shift takes a very dangerous turn in more ways than one!!
Nina is a diabetic whose blood sugar levels via an app on her smartphone which she no longer has possession of. Plus, there is a dangerous man at the storage facility who poses a serious threat to Nina as well. This book soon becomes a tense and suspenseful cat-and-mouse which could turn deadly.
There are quite a few twists, turns, and revelations in this book. I enjoyed the first half of the book immensely but found myself rolling my eyes and getting annoyed with Nina as the plot went a little off the rails for me.
The author successfully nailed the trapped feeling of being in a 24-hour storage facility. The quiet and loneliness of being in such a big building. There is also a nice amount of dread, tension, danger, and unease in this book. While it was enjoyable, I don't believe that I will remember this book in months to come.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

A ‘locked room’ ish thriller set in ‘Storage Queen’ ( gotta love the name ) where we meet night shift worker Nina who is hoping for a quiet, stress free 12 hours……..unfortunately the universe has decided the opposite and Nina could not imagine what she is about to go through…..
It is a taut, frantic read ( good frantic ) where as soon as the action starts it pretty much is non stop, there are a few chapters where some of the characters stories are told and I found these helpful and an integral part of the story,I’m not 100% sure why but I liked Stacey ( Nina’s boss ) a flawed character if ever there was one but also vulnerable and kind
Nina has type 1 diabetes,an illness the author has much experience with as explained in her emotive ‘authors note’ and I think a top job was made of explaining how it affected Nina and the true complex nature of the illness and how it can change from minute to minute, however don’t think this is a medical essay kind of read as it’s not but we are made aware of Nina’s struggles due to her diabetes
It’s fast, punchy, full on and set within a time frame ( something always enjoy in a book ) and has the right mix of action, dialogue and suspense
The author always writes a great read and continues to do so with this differently exciting all encompassing book…
The main plotline in this book takes place over the span of the 12-hour shift of Nina, who is currently attending medical school, and uses her night shift at the 24-hour storage facility to catch up on homework; Nina is diabetic and she must be checking her insulin levels throughout the day. On this particular shift, she had already had a bad start as she had just broken up with her boyfriend; throughout her shift she starts seeing suspicious activity in one of the storage units, and her night goes from bad to worse.
I enjoyed the multiple POVs throughout the book and the twists in the story were unexpected. Loved how the author incorporated a lot of information about the everyday lifestyle/activities of a diabetic person. The author's style of writing is very descriptive and I was able to picture all the events in the book as I was reading.
Thank you Boldwood Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book was interesting at the beginning, but then it started to drag, and I really lost interest. I am surprised that I finished it. I also felt very sorry for Laura because she was hiding for a long time. If this was a movie it would be soo annoying.

Nina is a young college student working a solo overnight 12-hr shift at an indoor storage facility. When a suspicious customer comes and goes throughout the night her suspicion leads to a cat & mouse chase throughout the night with Nina fearing for her life. Will she escape the night alive?
A super slow start and then the next 80% of this novel felt like a really bad, low budget horror film. Nina was absolutely so dumb that it made me want to just get through the book as quickly as possible because it was just so unbelievable that someone could be that stupid, especially someone top of her class in medical school. I respect the diabetes aspect of the book, but she made some super dumb calls as a diabetic who knew her blood sugar would cause her issues throughout the night. How many times did you complain you were getting hypoglycemic and passed your snack drawer but didn't stop to grab something? Over and over and over and over again, she made really poor judgement calls. Hide or fight were her options and she just couldn't make up her mind. She would hide, but then when emerging from her hiding place she failed to obtain a weapon (numerous items were available to use as a weapon). When she did obtain a weapon, she would take like one swing and drop it and run. Like come on girl, you never drop your weapon, and you never stop hitting until they're unconscious or dead! Overall, this 80% portion of the book kind of felt like I was watching that Geico horror movie commercial that makes fun of the poor decisions of horror movie characters.
On a positive note, I did enjoy the ending and learning what these antagonists were really up to. That was a breath of fresh air from the never ending cat & mouse. Although, there were some random aspects to the conclusion that felt like an over-forced "twist" that just wasn't necessary.
Zero stars for this one. This is the dumbest, most annoying book I've read in a long time. Like outlandishly improbable plotting, zero-to-none research, characters that are too stupid to find their own butts in the dark as well as too boring/one-dimensional to hold your interest, the inescapable Young Ditzy Female No Working Braincell But Lotsa Feels first-person singular narration typical for this kind of substandard dreck, tons of repetition (if I have to see the word "diabetic" one more time...), liberal helpings of Idiot Plot, lacklustre editing (not that I can blame the poor sod that had to edit this garbage), and prose that reads like something a fifteen-year-old dreamed up? Step right up! You can literally feel your neurons withering while plodding through this boring, convoluted, "twist"-infested mess.
You can tell the quality of the plotting by the fact that the author has to dedicate a big chunk of the final chapter to a tacked-on explanation of the actions and motivations of the bad guy/s -- "and when they did this, they found out that, and they had to come up with X, and all the while Y, and this is because that, and then that happened on top of it", and yes, it's just as asinine as it sounds. A well-executed novel, even/especially a genre one, should be like a big, intricate, elegant machine where everything works together seamlessly to create something bigger than its parts. This is like some cheap capsule toy that wobbles around for a bit before the gears come loose and the wheels fall off while playing crazy annoying music.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC, but this is just too awful to take seriously. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Will definitely stay away from this author in the future.
This is an unsettling story that is fast paced and has a feeling of dread throughout. I liked the writing style. I was invested in how it was going to end. I would recommend this! Special Thank You to Gemma Rogers,Boldwood Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of The Night Shift by Gemma Rogers published by Boldwood Books Gemma is one of my favorite authors. I'll drop what I'm doing to read her next book. And of course she doesn't disappoint with this novel.
She has weaved a story that keeps you locked in and that takes place over less than a 24 hour period. Action packed and full of interesting characters. Amazing description of the events that take place. The story is told primarily by the main character Nina, but we also get insights by a few other characters throughout the novel. Nina is one tough cookie to say the least. I loved reading this story. The author had done an incredible job at using one location and a short period of time and turned it into a full length novel. It is fast paced, with twists and turns that I didn't see coming, a real page turner. The story also bring some awareness to Diabetes, specifically Type 1 Thank you Gemma for writing amazing novels. I'm looking forward to the next🤩
"My day had been bad enough before I'd arrived at work, now I was being hunted by some lunatic on steroids."
Excellent!
Starts slow (in a good way), introducing the environment, the characters. Nina Is a solid main character. Learned something about diabetic people which was nice. The twist midway through the story was very good and nicely set up with an earlier chapter (Sasha's POV). All-round, great writing.
Recommended. 👍
Notes I took while I was reading: - Every time I read or watch something British, I learn some weird new phrase: 'give up the ghost'
- Did not expect a second or a third POV. Well written.
- A twist! Midway through the story.
- Wow. This went from crazy to batshit crazy in a few chapters.
- Nice True Romance reference. Like Nina, I did not connect the 'white dude with dreadlocks' to Gary Oldman in that film.
If you’re a fan of Gemma Rogers you will enjoy this one The story got me right from the second I started it. It had a decent pace, but I did find it became a bit repetitive in some parts of trying to find a way out of the building. The twist in it were good and you don’t see them coming or at least I didn’t. It’s always scary working a night shift. Especially when having to deal with the public. You never know what the night will bring and this night brought a lot more then Nina could have expected A good quick read for a raining day. If you like locked door thrillers then you need to pick this one up.
A promising start that fizzled out fairly quickly. I thought the concept was interesting, if a little far fetched, and the multiple characters ranged from a bit dull through to full of potential.
Much of the book was based around setting the scene but I found about half way through there was a lot of repetitiveness and over explaining the same details over and over again, which lost my interest in finding how the story developed.
As an author, I’m sure they have better works than this. I may give them another try in the future.
THE NIGHT SHIFT BY GEMMA ROGERS Release date set for the 6th of March 2025. This is my second book by Gemma and it was another brilliant book and I really enjoyed it. This was a very fast read for me as it's so good you just find yourself flying through it and before you know it I was finished. Congratulations on another brilliant good
The Night Shift is a fast paced, twisty thriller that I literally could not put down! This was my first time reading a book by Gemma Rogers, and it definitely won’t be the last! This book was such a fun, quick read, and I literally flew through it.
I have never worked the night shift before, and one thing I’ll say is that this book has put me off it for life! Everything about this book was tense from the beginning, and it was a really interesting, unique take on the ‘locked room’ thriller trope. I was literally holding my breath the whole time, and I was rooting for the main character, Nina!
Another thing that I really loved about this story was the portrayal of type one diabetes. It was a huge part of who Nina was as a character, and I think the author portrayed it in such an amazing, heart wrenching way.
Overall, this was a really interesting, tense thriller and I would definitely recommend it to thriller fans!
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book kept me on my toes!! So much suspense throughout the whole story line. The ending I NEVER could of guessed. I couldn’t put it down! There ia so much detail in this book it felt like I was physically in the book going through the motions with the characters.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for allowing me an advance reading copy! 💕
I have worked the night shift too and I understand our main character Nina, when she says she loves to do it because of the peace and quiet, but I would not want to trade places with her. I loved to have some co workers around in case...
Nina should be in a safe environment, surrounded by security camera's and so on, but when someone wants to harm you and they are inside the 'safe' space with you, that's when it all becomes very, very dangerous.
Lots of shadowy places to hide in are an advantage, but on the other hand it also means the baddies can be lurking everywhere without you noticing them...
I loved the fierceness and braveness Nina showed us and I did not see the outcome coming. I utterly enjoyed this thrilling book. 5 stars
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
Nina has just broken up with her boyfriend. She is a medical student and works night shifts at a storage facility to fund her studies. What’s starts as a client coming in one night acting suspiciously, results in a night long game of cat and mouse where survival is the prize.
This was so good. A total page turner. My heart was beating really fast at times as I could feel Nina’s fear and anxiety. The majority of the story is first person from Nina, this was really powerful as allowed me to completely be in the moment. There were a few chapters flashbacks of the past-these added to the storyline well. This kept me gripped right up until the end. I didn’t know who to trust. Just when I thought Nina was safe, something else would happen. In that sense it was maybe too long a book, however I would argue that the story being about the whole nightshift and all the twists and turns in her shift; it was the perfect length. I really got her fear and the stress of how much longer could she evade her attackers.
Nina is a medical student who has just broken up with her boyfriend, Dom, and is working the night shift at the Storage Queen when someone gets in and her night of terror begins. Will she survive the 12 hours? This one grabbed me and had me from the start. Although it did drag slightly in the middle section, it got better towards the end and had a surprising conclusion that kept me guessing!
Nina works the night shift at a 24h-access storage unit, and tonight is like no other. Tonight, Nina is fighting for her life. This book follows her in her desperate attempt to out smart and out-live her worst nightmare- while also trying to battle hypoglycemic attacks from her type one diabetes.
Were there multiple times I yelled at the character as if she were in a scary movie making all the wrong decisions? Yes. Big is the story believable? Also yes. Did I cringe at the hyper focus of her diabetes? Yes. Was I impressed at the practicality of involving real like issues in a general thriller book? Also yes.
The pacing was perfect. The storyline checks out. The whole thing wrapped up beautifully. I was so unexpectedly impressed with this one! Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC.
Unfortunately a huge miss for me. This was wildly repetitive and while the concept was very interesting - being trapped in a storage unit and documenting it hour by hour, the execution just wasn’t it.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley to for advanced opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 Stars.
I LOVE A KICKASS HEROINE. And the FMC was a BADDIE!!! I loved the twists and how many of the characters intertwined. I flew this book in one day. I will be reading more by this author because WOW!
Hot on the heels of "The Honeymoon" (which is phenomenal, by the way), I dived into this latest offering by Gemma Rogers whose thrillers have always kept me turning the pages in anticipation. And while this one started off as a slow build with not much happening in the first hour or so of Nina's night shift, it certainly picked up pace into the almost ridiculous with a relatively unrealistic game of cat and mouse. I'm not sure how Nina managed to survive under the circumstances when she really should have been dead within the first few minutes. Especially considering some of her poor choices, not to mention the diabetes.
Nina is a uni student in her second year of medical school, her dream to become a doctor and treat others with the often times debilitating diabetes. So when boyfriend Dom tries pleading with her to drop everything and spend six months bumming around travelling, first stop Thailand, she doesn't even consider it. Becoming a doctor is her dream and no way was she jeaopardising it when she was so close to fulfilling her dream. So the couple had a major bust up just moments before Nina was due to start her shift at Storage Queen (funnily enough, we have a Storage King here), thus making her late for her shift.
As manager Stacey bids her a hasty farewell, Nina is looking forward to a quiet stress-free night shift. Until it isn't. When the facility is plunged into darkness, Nina suddenly finds herself in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an assailant she cannot see. But she knows this place. She just needs to navigate it stealthily and silently without her pursuer knowing so that she can make her escape and alert authorities as to her discovery. You'd think so, right? Wrong.
Nina makes every stupid decision known to man. Instead of making her escape, she leads him on a merry chase up and down, round and round, whilst never getting very far in the process. I threw my hands up in the air in frustration several times, shaking my head and rolling my eyes. The whole concept was a neverending cycle that even exhausted me by the end.
But there were some aspects of the story that I found totally unbelievable. The security guard, for example. No way could he just disappear without anyone noticing or following it up. He'd have to log every call and every action and response to every call out so that someone would always be aware of where he was should anything go wrong. In reality, his disappearing off the radar with his company should have had them sending someone out to his last call out to investigate. My husband was in security in another life, so I questioned this with him, to which he confirmed my suspicions. And he also worked night shifts though they were never this exciting. But that was just one thing. There are many others which, if I mentioned, would spoil the story and I don't want to do that.
However, I found this one to be rather unrealistic and bordering on ridiculous to the point that Nina irritated me. I couldn't care less what happened to her, she made that many stupid decisions. She made it very difficult to empathise with her and her plight and I'm still dizzy from all the up and down, to-ing and fro-ing she took us on.
The pacing was steady throughout (though I was kept dizzy with all the running about) and while she mostly made stupid decisions, there were a few heroic ones I could cheer her for. Her insulin pen, for one. Ingenious. And despite battling hypoglycaemic attacks, she managed to maintain some level of focus which was to be commended.
Overall, an OK thriller. For 258 pages, it felt a little longer to me but that could be because Nina irritated the crap out of me and I kept wanting to slap her. There were a couple of good twists that I didn't see coming...probably because I was too focused on Nina's stupidity. But they kept the story tight and made it a little worthwhile. And while I don't mind tales that border the unrealistic or OTT, I do like them to entertain me not irritate me. And Nina irriated me more often than not.
I would like to thank #GemmaRogers, #Netgalley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #TheNightShift in exchange for an honest review.
I picked up The Night Shift because the premise sounded refreshingly different: Nina, a medical-student working nights at a 24-hour storage facility (called Storage Queen) to support her studies, is looking forward to a quiet shift until things go very wrong. The setting is genuinely unique for a thriller and I loved that: the idea of someone trying to juggle study, illness (Nina has type 1 diabetes) and a mundane “night shift” job, only to have it morph into a terrifying survival scenario, gave the plot a fresh angle.
The opening is strong, the atmosphere of the facility, the isolation, the creeping suspicion that something is off. Nina’s diabetes adds a realistic vulnerability and raises the stakes. She’s not just fighting an external enemy but also managing her own body under pressure. The “locked-in” or “trapped on the shift” feel works. It’s a cat-and-mouse setup at heart and I found the twisty structure satisfying in many parts. Around the middle of the book the momentum drags. There are long sequences of Nina evading danger, running through the building, hiding, investigating all of which I understand are needed but I found them repetitive and at times the tension flagged. Some parts felt a little forced or too convenient like characters showing up just in time, or escape routes that feel a bit unlikely. For me the execution didn’t always match the promise of the strong premise. Also, while the ending has big reveals, the lead-up didn’t always make them feel inevitable, which for me takes away a touch of the impact.
Big spoilers for the ending (so if you haven’t read it and want to avoid spoilers, stop here!) During the shift, Nina realises that what she thought was an “ordinary” bad night job has become a fight for survival. A suspicious client arrives with a large suitcase, blood is found, the power goes out, alarms blare, and the storage facility becomes dangerous ground. In the climax there is a major twist: Nina’s manager, Stacey, who had seemed like a background character and someone Nina could trust at least partially, turns out to be far more involved than expected. Her son is the one behind it all.

- 14% in and what?? The main character thinks Sasha could be in the storage unit, but didn’t she look in there when she did her checks and saw it was empty except for the suitcase?? Confused… - I also don’t know why she doesn’t carry pepper spray or something for self defense working the night shift alone. - Goddd Nina is the worst. She always complains about the “mistakes” she’s made hoping you’d feel bad for her. - And why tf would you leave your call phone on a table accessible by the public?! - (86%) Wooow Nina doesn’t even tell any paramedics or firemen that Felix is upstairs?! But she follows Stacey back up there after she’s been trying to get out all night? Screw that! - Ugh why Nina continued to work the nightshifts let alone at that place in general after everything is beyond me! - Mehhh overall, just OK.

If you're looking for a fast paced cat and mouse game, this is it. An extremely unrealistic cat and mouse game that it. I was very impressed with how the author managed to keep the story moving along when realistically Nina should have been dead in the first five minutes. By the end even I was exhausted.
It started off slow but things kick into high gear pretty quickly. There was a lot of tension making me turn the pages. Med school student Nina is working the night shift from hell to pay her way through school. Her night just keeps going from bad to worse with uncontrolled diabetes, camera blind spots and uninvited guests. Some ingenious little twists to carry the story along and a satisfying ending.
It’s impressive when an author can make an entire book, packed with so much drama, take place in the span of twelve hours. I felt this one on a visceral level, a thriller that had me reading every chance I got. At first I thought it was going to be a short read because I figured such a big climax had to be occurring just before things get all wrapped up for a neat little ending but I was wrong, it was only beginning. Be prepared for a wild ride! Don’t miss out on The Night Shift. #thenightshift #netgalley
This book was alright. It provided the entertainment I was after, but I wouldn’t call it exceptional. The pacing was a bit uneven; it started off slow, then picked up, and slowed down again at points. There were some filler sections that didn’t really add much. The main character was fine; I wanted to feel for her more than I did. The author succeeded in making me care about her in some parts, but I was hoping for a stronger connection from the start. In the end, it was an enjoyable read.
There was SO much I loved about The Night Shift. I really appreciated having a diabetic main character, as a diabetic myself. The fact that Gemma Rogers took her daughter’s diagnosis and life altering ailment, researched and became knowledgeable enough to write a believable and relatable character blew me away. Thank you!
This book was a rollercoaster that I didn’t want off of. It reminded me of the movie Panic Room. Being trapped in a building with your captor and trying to save yourself from your own highs and lows of blood sugar. It was intense and captivating from cover to cover.
Highly recommend and I’m looking forward to more novels from Gemma!
