Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery

Rate this book
Half-siren Elvira Vance doesn’t trust outsiders. Especially not the human detective who’s been hired to investigate the disappearances of a chupacabra and the crown for the Marfa Monster Festival. While humans are convinced the monster skipped town with the crown, Elvira knows there’s more to the story. As the daughter of Vince Vance—founder of Vince Vance’s Vintage Trailer Park Inn for Monsters—Elvira cares too much about her home to let this mystery go unsolved.

With her two best friends, Elvira collects clues and investigates humans, banshees, vampires, and ghosts. But when more creatures start disappearing and antimonster attitudes rise, Elvira realizes that her friends could be in real danger.

Now time is running out, and Elvira must use her siren powers and sleuthing skills to solve this mystery—or lose everything she loves.

If you're looking for a contemporary fantasy middle grade with adventure plot and monster mystery being a metaphor for racial tensions in the southern USA, this is a great book to pick.

As the title suggests, this is a middle grade contemporary fantasy with a mystery plot. Titular Elvira is a half-human half-monster (half-siren) girl living on her parents' trailer park for monsters. When one of the residents goes missing and a crown for an important festival contest goes missing at the same day, the local human authorities immediately assume one of the monsters stole the trophy and ran off with it. Elvira is unconvinced that this is the truth and thinks humans just want to pin crimes on monsters to oust them from their spaces as too dangerous to public peace. Therefore she decides to solve the mystery herself and clear the name of the accused monster. Together with her chupacabra monster friend and a Black human boy they create a diverse trio going on sleuthing, adventuring and getting into all sorts of trouble.

The monsters here were an apt metaphor for racial minorities, and the human treatment of them like immediately jumping to suspicion of crime or wanting to get rid of them from their land showcased racial tensions and discrimination in an age-appropriate way for a middle grade novel. Elvira herself is a "halfie" as she describes herself and struggles to fit in, which resembles struggles of bi-racial children.

What I loved was that the novel avoided typical black-and-white thinking of clear division between evil human oppressors and innocent oppressed monsters. The situation is much more complex, nuanced and morally grey, which is a delight to see in middle grade instead of heavy handed clear cut moral lessons.

Elvira herself is mischievous and carefree, and also struggles with controlling her monster powers as she's tempted to use them to "cheat" her way through the situation or get what she wants, and I found it really relatable she had to face decisions between being selfish and doing the right thing. I think it's very normal for children to be tempted to get their way if they can cheat the system, and ultimately it's not just about "what parents forbid" or "what will be the consequences for breaking rules" but also how will you feel about yourself knowing you picked the easy way out that also wasn't very honorable.

The mystery plot itself was a good vehicle to introduce various monsters and create interesting mishaps and plot twists. Action-packed short chapters and effortless dash of humour should make this book accessible to a young reader. While it tackles harder subjects like law enforcement biases, there's nothing drastic in the story, so I would recommend it to any child ready to consume full-length novels (the ARC was 200 pages for me, so I estimate the length at 50-60 thousand words), so probably ages 9+ but also every child's reading journey is individual.

Also I appreciated the portrayal of Elvira's parents as loving and supportive, and wishing to teach her kindness and tolerance.

I fully recommend this book to fans of supernatural middle grade mysteries, and people who want to see more insight into how racial tensions and stereotypes affect local communities in an accessible, non-preachy, age-appropriate manner.

Thank you Netgalley, Storytide and HarperCollins Children's Books for the ARC!

TL;DR: Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery is an adventure-filled Scooby-Doo and the Gang-style middle-grade fantasy mystery that I think many young readers will enjoy. The hijinks that ensue may be over-the-top at times, but the story is action-packed as we follow Elvira and her group of friends as they try to solve the mystery of who’s hurting monsters in the place she calls home. Tough topics that mirror our reality were addressed well by the author in an approachable and easy-to-digest way that wouldn’t be overwhelming for young readers. My only qualm is certain situations relating to the MC’s actions that I wish had been addressed differently, but otherwise, this was a fun romp of a read that’s not only perfect for the spooky season but also summer-time reading!

WHAT I ENJOYED
- I liked that this is a story about monsters where monsters are expected to act like monsters. That might sound silly, but it was refreshing to see that while monsters may be misunderstood by humans, they are actually scary, and they aren’t particularly discerning about who they eat or capture if their boundaries are crossed and they’re baited. 😂
- I think the strong themes of racism, bigotry, discrimination, intolerance, systemic oppression and hatred are addressed well. It’s not about one side doing good when they’re the ones seen as evil, and the other doing evil when they’re seen as the ones doing good. It’s individuals who do good and bad things, and it’s how you react and grow in your environment that matters. It was intense at times, especially as we approached the mystery’s peak, but there was nothing overly violent that would be inappropriate for young readers.
- Elvira, Mari, and Emilio were a fun and varied group of friends! I loved that the trio are a mix of monster and human and that they had such a great mix of personalities. I loved how Mari was the muscle, but that she also had a big brain underneath the brawn box that people put her under. Emilio was a sweetheart who accepted a lot of trauma being friends with these monster girlies who had no fear, and despite being the only human among them, and scared to boot 90% of the time, he was still there for his friends every step of the way.
- Elvira’s parents seemed really cool, and they gave me great Morticia and Gomez Addams vibes with their cheesy sweetness and devotion to each other. 😂 They weren’t totally absent parents, but Elvira got away with doing a lot of things under their noses! Other characters I liked were Detective Price, and I was sad we didn’t get to see more of him on page, but also (surprisingly) Thaddeus, that pompous vampire!

WHAT I STRUGGLED WITH
- I wasn’t always Elvira’s biggest fan, and this was especially so the further along the book we went, because she crossed a lot of lines that she claimed she never would. These moments weren’t properly addressed, even if they were acknowledged as wrong briefly or in passing. The thing is, it’s not that Elvira doesn’t know that what she did was wrong because, as she’s doing it, she recognises that she is crossing a boundary that shouldn’t be crossed, and still does it anyway. Following that, however, she doesn’t take ownership of her actions, and that’s clear based on what happens afterwards, as she repeats the behaviour. I understand that she is a young monster who is struggling to cope with her powers amidst the chaos of saving her home, and while she’s young and will make brash and illogical decisions without properly thinking through the consequences until it’s too late, that doesn’t mean she’s not old enough to learn from it.

- There were admittedly other times when Elvira’s actions came across as rather selfish, especially when she recognised at the time that the thing she was about to say or do would put her and her friends in danger, and yet she did it anyway. A lot of her actions made her seem even more like a spoiled and thoughtless teenager, rather than a scared teenager who would do anything to protect the people she loves in the “best” way she knows how.

A fun fast-paced mystery that was spooky and cute. This reminded me of a blend of Hotel Transylvania and Nancy Drew.

The story was something that could be enjoyed by all ages and I look forward to my daughter reading it someday as well!

Elvira was a character that was easy to root for and connect with. I enjoyed her determination to help! Elvira teams up with her misfit friends Mari and Emilio and take it upon themselves to find out what really happened!

I enjoyed Mari’s and Emilio’s personalities. They all complimented each other well and each had their strengths in different areas that made them a great mystery solving trio!

There was mystery, monsters, humans, prejudice, twists, adventure, and so much more packed into this well written and enjoyable middle-grade mystery!

Trailer park for monsters? Ok. A mystery about a few disappearances? Alright. A half-siren on the case? Of course.

The elements here are a fun set up for a Scooby-type mystery mixed with elements of Hotel Transylvania. I loved the premise. I think the target audience will find it to be fun.

I appreciate that Elvira struggles to fit in, not monster enough for some monsters and not human enough for most humans. On a personal level, I can feel that, living somewhere in the in-between and looking rather ambitious myself. Elvira, though, maybe had that othering manifest in a less than desirable way. I struggled with her as a character at times because she didn't seem to listen well and came off as a little selfish.

This is a fun Scooby-Doo like mystery--except the monsters are the victims and the ones solving the mystery! Elvira Vance is a feisty half-monster half-human who is intensely devoted to her friends, family, and home. She'll do anything to protect them--sneak out when she's grounded, make a deal with a ghost (never make a deal with a ghost!), and sneak into a deadly werewolf's lair. Action packed and full of spunk, readers will love going on this wild ride with Elvira Vance as she fights for monster rights and against discrimination all while solving a whodunnit-type mystery. Loved it!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy

Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery by Kacy Ritter is a first person-POV Middle Grade paranormal mystery. Elvira Vance is a half-siren half-human who is navigating a world that doesn’t understand her or her needs. Fifteen years ago, the world of monsters was revealed to humans and in the American Southwest, there were a lot more monsters than humans were expecting, causing tension between the two groups. When a human detective comes to Elvira’s monster community to investigate a missing chupacabra and crown, she’s determined to solve the crime herself.

I figured out who was responsible for the missing crown and monsters about halfway through the book and I have no issue with that. If anything, I highly prefer that especially in Middle Grade. When a young reader figures out who the villain is, it can help them feel accomplished and that they have the skills to solve puzzles, which is one of the main reasons why I would hand a young reader a mystery book. I know some readers like twists that they don’t see coming, but I will always prefer a twist I can predict over something that comes out of nowhere and still doesn’t make sense on a reread. This is definitely the former.

The monsters vs humans conflict and Elvira being half-siren are strong allegories for racial tensions and the biracial experience. Elvira is looked down on by humans and monsters alike and even though she lives in a loving home, things are not perfect. Her father was disowned for marrying a siren, for instance. There’s very little violence and the approach this takes is friendly to readers who are being introduced to these ideas but are obvious enough that biracial young readers can see themselves in it.

Elvira’s two best friends are Mari, a chupacabra, and Emilio, a human who is also a member of the Junior Supernatural Allies League. Their varied POVs help to bring in new information and angles to help solve the mystery and all of them being aligned that monsters have a place in the world help keep their friendship strong even when there is conflict. There are some slight feelings developing on Elvira’s side towards Emilio, but they are the beginnings of a crush instead of a full blown romance.

Content warning for depictions of tension between different species

I would recommend this to young readers who love fantasy and want a mystery novel and readers of fantasy mystery looking for something more paranormal-leaning

A delightfully spooky, and frightfully fun read perfect for readers young and old. Taking place in a vintage trailer park, Elvira Vance (EV to her friends) tackles rising anti-monster sentiments, a crush on one of her best friends, coming into her half-siren inheritance late in life, and the Crown of Fright getting stolen weeks before the monster world’s biggest event of the year! Combining humor with jam-packed action and monstrous shenanigans, Kacy Ritter weaves a beautiful story about the difficulties in growing up and feeling like everything is spiraling outside your control, while exploring the depths of what it means to be part of a community and how owning your identity—even when the world makes it hard. A glorious sophomore novel, you should definitely pick up a copy in time for spooky season!

Suspenseful and fun middle-grade adventure where young supernatural sleuths investigate the disappearance of some of their monster neighbors.

Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery by Kacy Ritter is a fun and exciting paranormal middle-school novel about a team of young investigators looking into the disappearance of a number of monsters from their community right before the annual Marfa Monster Festival, the biggest event of the year. Half-siren Elvira Vance is the daughter of the owners of Vince Vance’s Vintage Trailer Park Inn for Monsters and a budding detective. When some of her monster neighbors begin to go missing, she and her two best friends, Mari, a chupacabra, and Emilio, a human and photography enthusiast, jump at the chance to investigate, especially when the official detective, a human from the local town of Marfa, Texas, shows up to take over the case.

In the years since monsters of all kinds came out into the open, there had been an uneasy truce between them and the humans. However, the local mayor, Guff McCoy, had been doing his level best to stir up fear and hate in the human community. With tensions between the species about to boil over, and finders from both camps pointing at the other, Elvira, Mari, and Emilio know they must get to the bottom of the disappearances before things explode.

What a delightful children’s/middle-grade story of monsters and mystery, unknowns and underdogs! Elvira is a confident character, certain that she and her team can crack the case before the adult human can, and they do uncover clues that Detective Ace Price has no way of obtaining. I enjoyed the trio’s investigations and their questioning of a variety of mythical beings in the process. While Elvira, Mari, and Emilio frequently disobey their parents, they seem to generally believe they have no choice and accept their punishments, when caught, without complaining. However, they readily continue to break those same rules without ever fully explaining what they’re involved in with their parents, and perhaps avoiding some of their problems. As they gather their clues and build their case, twists in the plot rule out a couple of major suspects. The eventual reveal is a surprise, and the action leading up to the resolution is shocking and exciting.

I recommend ELVIRA VANCE AND THE MONSTER MYSTERY to readers of middle-grade paranormal fiction, action, and adventure. However, not only will middle-grade readers enjoy the adventure, but the book will also work well as a read-aloud selection for younger children.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advance Review Copy through Toppling Stacks Tours.

Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery is a middle grade-early teen contemporary fantasy with a mystery plot. The story takes place at a (mostly) monsters only trailer park in West Texas, owned by Elvira's parents. Elvira, a half-siren, along with her besties, a chupacabra girl and a human boy, are trying to discover who is responsible for the disappearance of the monster festival crown and a trailer park resident who went missing on the same night. Unlike the human townsfolk who were quick to accuse the monster of the crime, Elvira doesn't believe he took the crown and skipped town. She believes he was a victim too. It's this belief that leads her and her friends into all sorts of sleuthing adventures, mishaps and mayhem.

I really enjoyed the variety of monsters, how their lifestyles were depicted and the sense of community within the trailer park. Yes, there were some conflicts between the different types of monsters, just as there would be in any human trailer park. As one would expect with monsters, some had scary aspects to them. But the writing was age appropriate and not truly "scary" in a horror level sense. Descriptive enough, without being overly detailed or graphic. Really not scary at all, more like Scooby-Doo level scary. The writing is totally aligned with the middle grade-early teen level audience.

What I appreciated most about the story is the way the author addressed the issues of discrimination, oppression, racial identity and systemic hate within the larger community, without making it completely one-sided. Both the monsters and the humans had good and wicked characters. Both had preconceived judgements against each other, but also within the closer relationships too. Both had trouble grappling with mixed-race identities. While these topics could be heavy, the way the author presented them they weren't at all. Relevant, without being too deep for the targeted age group. Written with a soft touch and a sense of humor, Kacy Ritter has created a wonderful world full of diverse characters and epic adventures.

Although it may seem like it's about a community of monsters, it's truly about discrimination, judging others and deep-rooted prejudice. Also, about love, friendship and realizing your own flawed beliefs.

Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for the opportunity to receive this book for review consideration. All views are my own and freely given.

Elvira Vance is struggling to learn to control her newfound compulsion powers as a half-siren. When a chupacabra goes missing from Elvira’s father’s trailer park, along with the crown for the Marfa Monster festival, human suspicion falls on every monster living in Marfa, Texas.
Naturally, the human mayor and a new detective want to pin the crime on a monster, but Elvira knows better. With the help of her best friends, she launches her own investigation, leading her to question a banshee, vampire, werewolf and ghosts. But once other monsters begin to disappear, Elvira discovers secrets both monsters and humans would prefer remain hidden.
Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery is a fast-paced mystery read with humor and exciting twists and turns. I appreciated the dynamic between the friends as well as Elvira’s relationship with her firm, yet supportive parents. Elvira’s tendency to do the wrong thing and make mistakes in pursuit of the truth rang true to me and made her an interesting detective and a complicated character. As a Texan myself, I really appreciate the backdrop of Marfa and Terlingua, tow very real, very unusual West Texas towns.
Despite the inclusion of spooky monsters, they are treated with humor and compassion and won’t put off young readers who shy away from scares. I only wish we had gotten to know the many colorful characters of Marfa a bit better. Kacy Ritter has created an intriguing world here and I hope to have the opportunity to visit it again.

Elvira Vance completely stole my heart. She’s smart, bold, and has the kind of voice that immediately pulls you in—equal parts funny, fierce, and vulnerable. The story takes off on the very first page and never slows down. There’s a missing chupacabra, a stolen crown, a shady human detective, and a ton of suspicion pointed at the monster community. But Elvira knows something’s not right, and she’s determined to figure it out—no matter how dangerous it gets.

The world Kacy Ritter creates is so vivid and clever. Within just a few chapters, you understand the rules of this monster-human town, the tensions between species, and the unique culture that makes it all come alive. The fact that Elvira is half-siren adds another layer of complexity and identity that gives this mystery a lot of emotional depth.

What really stuck with me, though, was the message. This story isn’t just about solving a mystery—it’s about what it feels like to be judged for who you are, and how powerful it can be to stand up for your community. The way the author tackles themes like racism, bias, and belonging is thoughtful and age-appropriate, but never watered down. And somehow, it’s still fun! There's humor, friendship, found family, and even a bit of magic.

Middle-grade readers are going to love Elvira and her gang of loyal friends. It’s perfect for fans of *Amari and the Night Brothers* or *Ghost Squad*—fast-paced, heartfelt, and full of meaning. Honestly, this one’s a gem. Highly recommend! Thank you to the author and publisher for the book and my honest review.

*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*

I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did. I thought the premise sounded like a lot of fun, but instead I just found myself wondering why I should care about Elvira as a character. She's a little spoiled and selfish and if there is a bad way to do something she is sure to choose that way. You are given the impression that she is great at solving mysteries but all I saw was someone with a knack for making everything worse. She plunges full steam ahead into her plans without listening to anyone else, taking into account the risks, or thinking about how her actions will impact others. I guess that's supposed to be part of her siren-personality, but instead it just makes her seem selfish and not as great an investigator as she thinks. You also realize that, in the end, everything she did had little to do with actually solving the mysteries. And if ever a family needed some counseling it is Elvira's - I am not sure how her father could ever fully trust her again (partly because she was not really that remorseful over what she did). With the ending, I do not understand what changed to make people suddenly accepting of the monsters - it was still a monster that almost caused mass casualties (on both sides) and no one really did or said anything to create a bridge between the two groups. I know other people really liked this book, but I thought it was just okay.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for allowing me to read an eARC of this charming middle grade!
I originally chose to request this one because it sounded unique and fun. I quickly found I was correct.
This book places you in a world where monsters and humans are re-learning how to live together after monsters decided to hide away.
If you want a book that is not “scary” but has monsters with unique takes on the traditional lore as well, this is the perfect book. It also sort of reminded me of the movie Halloweentown on Disney. A community of monsters that live in a trailer park and a big baddie is kidnapping monsters.
There is a zombie cat named Shadow. He was the best side character.
I didn't find myself extremely intrigued by the mystery, but I was very drawn into how this author crafted a completely different take on monsters and how their “powers” worked or traits were portrayed. I also am not the age range for the readership, so I think a child would probably be more engrossed in the missing monster case. It gave off very Scooby Doo type vibes.
Elvira as our protagonist deals with controlling her power on top of trying to solve a case for her community that she is only half a part of, but cares deeply for. She has a spunky Chupacabra friend, Mira, and also a human boy named Emilio, who help her solve this case.
This book was such a cute and fun time! Perfect for Halloween season.

Elvira Vance lives in her dad's trailer park for monsters. Years ago, monsters came out of hiding but tend to still be mistreated by humans. In the park though, they are accepted. However, things became more dire when the crown for the upcoming festival is stolen and a monster is suspected. Elvira knows he didn't do it, but she must find the true culprit. Teaming with her friends Mari (a chupacabra) and Emilio (a human), they investigate all sorts of monsters and humans to find the culprit.

I loved this one! I didn't realize that this was the same author as the Great Dragon Race, which I also loved, until I was done with the book. Ritter is so great at world building and character creation. I was obsessed with all the monsters in the book and all the quirks. Elvira was a delightful protagonist too. I thought her struggle to battle her siren call (she's half human, half siren) was relatable. I did see the whodunnit coming, but since this is directed toward middle grade children, that is not a negative for the book. I truly just want more of Elvira and her friends! I would read a whole series with her as protagonist, that is how much I enjoyed this one.

Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery is just too cute, and I really enjoyed it. This is a book for the spooky season that I will read with my children.
This quote here, "Vince Vance’s Vintage Trailer Park Inn for Monsters," the Chapter 1 title, told me everything I needed to know about this book: that it was going to be a fun ride. If you enjoy Nancy Drew vibes, this is for you and young readers.

Book Description:
Half-siren Elvira Vance doesn’t trust outsiders, especially not the human detective who’s been hired to investigate the disappearances of a chupacabra and the crown for the Marfa Monster Festival. While humans are convinced the monster skipped town with the crown, Elvira knows there’s more to the story. As the daughter of Vince Vance—founder of Vince Vance’s Vintage Trailer Park Inn for Monsters—Elvira cares too much about her home to let this mystery go unsolved.

ARC read - full review closer to pub: An action-packed, epic monster adventure that raises big discussion questions around identity and discrimination. Marfa, Texas hosts the best monster festival with treats, decorations, music, and all sorts of fun. But some humans still don’t accept monsters, and there is even bigotry within the community like what half-siren, half-human Elvira experiences. When the festival crown is stolen, humans use the crime as a pretext to cancel the festival setting Elvira and her friends off on a mission to solve the case and save the event. I loved meeting all the supernatural beings – seeing how they use their monster skills was thrilling and suspenseful. There are also issues around how we are each responsible for how we use our power for good and must not take advantage of our friends. I think Elvira’s struggles not to compel those around her using her voice will lead to interesting discussions for young readers. Kids are going to love it!

Monsters, mayhem, and mystery oh my!

Thirteen-year-old Elvira Vance lives in a trailer park for monsters, yes, really and just wants a chill Monster Festival. But when a sacred crown disappears and a beloved chupacabra is blamed, Elvira jumps into detective mode to clear her friend’s name. What follows is a fun, twisty mystery full of sirens, ghosts, vampires, and secrets that could change everything.

This middle grade read equal parts spooky and sweet think Scooby-Doo meets Nancy Drew with a dash of heartfelt social commentary. Elvira’s half-siren powers and mixed identity bring depth, while her loyal crew of monster and human friends keeps things laugh-out-loud funny.

It’s fast-paced, wildly imaginative, and sneaks in thoughtful themes about belonging and bias without ever slowing down the fun. Perfect for ages 8–12 or anyone who likes monsters with a message.

“Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery” is everything I love about middle grade books…a found family cast of characters, a main character who’s trying to figure herself out, and an incredibly important message about accepting those who are different instead of villainizing them. There’s also an adorable first crush storyline that instantly took me back to the horrors and wonder of being thirteen.

This would be such a fun book to read aloud, because there’s such a fabulous cast of characters, and as a native Texan, I appreciate how well the folklore and mythology of the Southwest was represented. Not only is KC Ritter an incredible writer, she’s a lovely human being, and I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next! For younger readers, this has moments of tension and “what’s going to happen?” anticipation but nothing scary enough to induce nightmares. I highly recommend this book, and happy reading!

Kacy Ritter has done it again with a wonderful sophomore novel. Elvira Vance is a half-siren and the daughter of Vince Vance of Vince Vance’s Vintage Trailer Park Inn for Monsters. She has a big mystery to solve when the crown for the Marfa Monster Festival disappears and monsters begin going missing. The humans are blaming the monsters for all the problems, and anti-monster sentiment is growing. In Texas you'll meet Elvira, a half-siren, who lives with her dad at the Vince Vance’s Vintage Trailer Park Inn for Monsters. When the crown for the Marfa Monster Festival goes missing, the very human detective brings with him bias, prejudice and accusations against the monsters living at the Trailer Park Inn and threatens to shut them down. Elvira is sure someone is being falsely accused and takes on the case, learning along the way a lot more about herself and those around her.

Kacy Ritter knocks it out of the park with Elvira Vance and the Monster Mystery. A book filled to the brim with metaphors that mirror the divides within society, this book challenges the status quo using the help of monsters and a bit of mystery. It was an easy story to invest in and hard to put down once I started it.

My tween readers will be drawn to the silly/horror vibe of Elvira Vance. The tight and dependable friendship between the main characters is great, and Elvira's parents walk a good line between supportive, protective and understanding. The mystery solving elements are a bit contrived, as each adventure reveals a single clue that leads to the next adventure, but that is reasonable for this reading level. My only qualm is the many monsters, their many powers and how the author sometimes invokes rules I've never heard of, so as to make it possible for all these monsters to live together, not kill each other, and not make one so overpowered as to break the story. But the community is fun and has lots of opportunity for sequels.

This was a really fun read, right from the start. I got sucked in early with the various characters and their kooky personalities. Elvira's sarcastic sense of humor was a treat. Without spoiling the story, her adventures with her friends and run-ins with various family members and towns people were funny and relatable while the other creatures she meets along the way were really creative and kept the excitement going straight to the end. It was a quick read and I could see this growing into a series – would love to read more.

Half-Siren Elvira lives with her human dad and siren mother in the monster-friendly trailer park in Marfa, Texas. She rails against the world that treats monsters as different while trying to hold back her new-found ability to compel people to do things. She’s especially reluctant to look her crush in the eye for fear of trying to compel him. When the monster crown disappears and her chupacabra friend disappears, she and her friends are determined to solve the mysteries.

A solid read. I enjoyed the characters and the little bit of first crush romance. Elvira’s character development was fantastic. I loved the mix of spooky and mystery. The parallels between the monsters and the non-white communities in Texas were very well done. Lots to talk about with students and kids in this book.
