When two intruders break into his house one night bent on attacking his family, Kevin Swanson fights back--with deadly consequences. In the aftermath, he rockets from obscure lawyer to local hero overnight--a hero to everyone, that is, except for a strange man who calls in to a local talk radio show when Kevin appears as a guest. The caller, who won't reveal his name, has a message: Kevin is no hero. And his story about what happened isn't even close to accurate. Suddenly, Kevin finds himself thrust into the center of one violent crime after another, rising to the occasion and exceeding his wildest expectations each time. Strangely, though, none of his attackers carry any identification. And as his doubts drive him through his own investigation of what really happened that night, his crumbling reality sends him hurtling towards a face-to-face confrontation with the nameless caller—and the horrifying truth that won't let him hide.

This was a great little thriller that I very much enjoyed. The plot wasn't entirely original but the suspense kept me reading and I wasn't disappointed at all with the ending. That works out as a winner in my world. I'll read this dude again.

At least 3.5*s.

Twilight Zone for the 21st century! Trigger Finger is the debut thriller by Jackson Spencer Bell, a gifted writer we're sure to hear more from. It's so frightening, & believable, I almost quit a couple times because it gave me nightmares. The narrator, lawyer Kevin Swanson, seems like any guy you'd meet at a dinner party--except that he's just become a local hero for blowing away 2 home invaders who tried to kill him & rape his wife & daughter. A threatening caller who provokes Kevin to lose it during a radio interview, plus the psychiatrist he's forced to consult, bring up a disturbing childhood clash with a fortune-teller and prod Kevin to turn over the rock of his heroism. His anguish as he examines his memory & motives, including his envious admiration for Bobby, his US Marine brother, is portrayed in a spare, vivid, often witty voice that adds a layer of identification & empathy.

As a mystery writer myself, I can usually second-guess plots, but each time I thought I knew where this one was headed, it took a hairpin turn. Reading Trigger Finger was as scary & fun as a roller-coaster. At the end of a stomach-flipping, fist-clenched ride, I staggered away feeling dizzy but satisfied.

Trigger Finger is a very well written fiction, laying out a complicated story in a clear manner. I felt like the author got me on page one and never lost me. Truly a nice read. But to me, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the fictional tale lies a great depth about how we live our lives. Without giving anything of the story away, I think this book shows that we all have principles that we try to live with, beliefs, a fairly clear line between right and absolutely wrong. Then life throws stuff at us. And all of a sudden, everything becomes blurry. We can't find the lines that held everything in place anymore. Even our own reality can lose its clarity, so we rely on others to help us find our way. I finished this book days ago and I am still trying to figure out, "What really happened to Kevin?"

I'd like to thank the author for providing me with a review copy in return for an honest review.
Trigger Finger is quite a complex read which is told, in part, during Kevin's sessions with his therapist. While it is obvious that Kevin is suffering with some kind of mental illness, I was never entirely sure whether events really happened or not. I kept changing my mind about this all the way through, and the end kind of left me hanging.
It was mostly well written, gripping and dark, but with a constant reminder of the more vulnerable side of humanity.
I really enjoyed it, enough to read more by the author, but I would have preferred a cleaner conclusion.

Blown Away!

What a roller coaster ride! From the opening pages of Trigger Finger, I was grabbed in a vice-grip hold and I wasn’t let go! Mr. Spencer Bell has weaved a tale of such mystery and vivid characters that I couldn’t put the book down. Had it not been for “real life”, I would have finished this book in one sitting.

It was refreshing to read a story told from the first person perspective - to really get inside Kevin Swanson’s head and see where he’s coming from. A respected lawyer, Kevin is thrust into the spotlight by protecting himself - and his family - from two home invaders who try to kill him & rape his wife & daughter. More events happen to test Kevin's resolve and heroism, and he struggles to grasp exactly what is happening to his seemingly mild-mannered life.

After seeking counselling for his increasingly terrifying nightmares, we are taken into Kevin’s past, learning of a disturbing incident with a fortune teller - more disturbing when a caller into a local radio show (that Kevin is a guest on) reveals that he is The Bald Man - the very person the fortune teller warned Kevin about.

Full of turns and twists, engaging, believable characters, and more surprises than I could count, Mr. Spencer Bell has a tale that is sure to be the beginning of a long and lucrative career as a writer. I immediately identified with Bobby (Kevin’s witty brother), as well as Brandon, a young man with a seeming multiple personality disorder.

Folks who enjoy a good mystery/thriller should definitely add this to their “must read” list. I even shared the premise with my wife, She who knows the plot five words in, and the ending surprised her! Personally, I was a little disappointed with the ending - I was expecting it to end differently - but the story is no less amazing for my preferences.

As a debut novel, Mr. Spencer Bell has hit the bulls-eye. A huge round of praise also, for his closing notes - asking for feedback, and even exhorting the reader to point our any clerical errors made as this was a first endeavour for him. You will go far. Keep writing, Mr. Spencer Bell. The world needs more of your stories.

I purchased this book on Amazon after coming across it on Rave Reviews Book Club. This is a well written fictional novel that will really make you think! As well as being a thoroughly enjoyable read. I read it in one sitting, because I just couldn't put it down. It grabbed me from the get go and held me hostage right up until the final page.

Kevin Swanson is a thirty-something lawyer in Alamance, and his life is normal--even privileged. Until-- intruders enter his home with intent to harm his wife and child, and he shoots them dead. As the story unfolds, the reader is lead into the dark labrynths of the mind, and questions what is reality and what is not. There were twists and turns aplenty, and I didn't see the ending coming. It was such a treat to be left in a state of unknowing right until the closing pages; that doesn't happen too often when I read a book, sadly.

There were two or three formatting errors, and only about a dozen typos in the whole book, which is a completely acceptable ration, and doesn't affect the enjoyment of the read at all. At the end of the book, the author invites readers to point out any typos, etc, they come across; so I have taken him at his word. As a fellow author, I understand how valuable this feedback can be--and kudos to Mr Spencer Bell for asking.

I give a strong Five out of Five stars for this book, which coming from a tough reviewer like me is saying something. I should point out here, that this is Jackson Spencer Bell's debut novel too. I will definitely be looking out for more books from this author and cannot recommend him highly enough.

I was really undecided whether to give this 3 stars or 4. Since this is the holiday season, I gave it 4 stars. This story reminded me slightly of the Stephen King style of writing from the 80's. You might classify it Psychological Thriller, or just screwed up. The editing was fairly clean, nothing that caused major hiccups while tearing through a tense scene. I couldn't shake the feeling that I knew how it was going to end from almost the beginning and then sure enough, that's how it ended. Then I read the bit about the author and how he reworked the ending to keep the reader guessing (confused) because someone suggested he do that. I will never know if that was good or bad. All in all, there were lots of good parts- enough to make it an overall good story.

'Trigger Finger' was one of those books that pulled me in from the beginning and didn't let go. This story line was quite interesting. Truly comparable to a Twilight Zone story. The way it played out kept me glued to the pages. Kevin is a likable character that you just want to see excel in his life. A good add to your tbr list.

***I received a free copy in exchange for a review***

I loved this book! My favorite lines: 1) “He wants to show that I’m a pussy,” I said. “He wants to make me into a bitch.” 2) “No wonder Brandon persisted in delusional thinking. These people spent all day surrounded by absolute bullshit.” 3) “That’s no man, replied a voice in my head. This one didn’t belong to Bobby or Kate or Allie; I recognized this as my own. I think you know that.” 4) “Her voice had lowered to a whisper raspy and dry, like newspaper left in the desert sun.” 5) “…but I had woken up on the couch in the basement with my fully-loaded AK-47 clutched against my chest like some kind of fucked-up teddy bear.”

The author did a brilliant job with the main character’s voice. Kevin sounded like a local hero being harassed by a stalker. When readers get a glimpse into his therapy sessions, they realize there’s definitely something more to Kevin, whether he’s in denial or guilty of something. You’ll have to read the book to find out.

It was interesting that Kevin described his stalker as the Bald Man. Not only that, but he was also convinced that the Bald Man used golems (objects made of clay who come to life) to attack him.

I don’t want to give too much away; however, make sure to pay attention to what the palm reader, Rudy, says about Kevin and his brother Bobby. From the first page, I sat on the edge of my seat, captivated by the suspense and mystery surrounding Kevin’s family. Like him, I started to wonder if his wife and daughter lied about being attacked upstairs, so Kevin wouldn’t lose his sanity from the guilt of not reaching his family in time.

The story ended with a great twist, and the scene of Kevin confronting Ruby gave me chills.

I RECOMMEND this book to read.

Keep smiling,

I have to say I found this book very hard to get into at first but eventually I did.

It tells the story of Kevin Swanson who’s a divorce lawyer who is hanging out in his man cave (basement) but falls asleep and is awoken to 2 men have entered the house and then hit him over the head with his baseball bat.

They think they have killed him but Kevin comes to and follows them upstairs and subsequently shoots them saving his wife and daughter from untold terror.

Kevin seems to have a hero complex well that’s how it appeared to me.

He’s tormented by the bald man who calls into the radio station when he’s giving an interview.

He goes on to foil a mugging and stabs the man and then later on he foils a rape of a woman and kills her 3 attackers.

In between all this he’s seeing a shrink and talking about all this but it’s not doing him any good.

Whilst reading the book I did think that all was not well and something else had happened and there was a different ending to the actual story.

Suffice to say I expected a closure to the story as it did leave you hanging.

'Trigger Finger' is the story of Kevin Swanson, a lawyer who has become a local hero for shooting and killing two men who broke in to his home with the intent to rape his wife and daughter.

I was gripped by this book right from the beginning. The story is very well told through the first person narrative of main character Kevin and though it's apparent that there's something off about his situation it's difficult to pin down what that something might be. The writer keeps the suspense up throughout, adding a few surprising twists, making it hard to figure out how it is all going to end.

I read this over two days but would have read it in one sitting if I'd had the time. The story played out very well. The pacing is great, the narrative is gripping and the ending was just perfect!

Overall this is a brilliant thriller, fast-paced and surprising. I look forward to reading more of this author's work. Highly recommended!

I liked this dark book - I was definitely on the ’same page’ with Kevin’s thinking in most parts of it. It was engrossing, thrilling, and the humorous asides cracked me up. I couldn’t quite understand how he was ’just a lawyer’ with all these amazing abilities to do what needed to be done. But figured I’d find out later in the book. Which I did!

I liked his style of writing very much. The profanity didn’t bother me - it went with the personalities.

The only reason I can’t give it five stars is the ending just threw me. I understand what was going on…but I couldn’t make it work in my mind. I needed a little more direction.

But overall, I enjoyed it and found myself thinking about Kevin’s dilemmas off and on during the day before I could get back to reading in the evening. I would definitely recommend this book.

Really enjoyed this book.

Right away I caught the similarities between this story and what happened to the doctor and his family in Connecticut. I thought how I wish the doctor could have had a gun and changed that outcome. At no time did I ever guess what was going to take place, and the story held onto me to the very end. The only part that confused me was at the end when they went to get in the car. She told him to drive, that she had never learned to drive a standard. But it was evident she drove there because he had to re-set the memory because she had the seat set too close.

This had a really interesting synopsis so I picked it up in the freebies and read it immediately. The story maintained the ability to keep me glued from beginning to end, it was a pretty well written novel/mystery - BUT - the end left me feeling icky for the rest of the day. Not sure how to factor that in to a review, but - it is what is most motivating my 3 star review. If you like a book that keeps you thinking long after you've finished the book, this may be for you. Though I do like something that leaves me with lasting thoughts - the nature of those thoughts were haunting me and I just didn't like that. I guess I'm more of a happy ending type reader?

An introspective psychological tale of suspense and sadness. The writing was well edited. The story had a lyrical quality to it. It was easy to visualize the scenes. There were a smattering of clues that left the reader to wonder what was happening and where the story might take them. The resolution...hmmm, these things never turn out well, do they?

I gave this novel 5 stars for the quality of the work, the low price point and first-time author extra credit. If Mr. Bell's next novel is anywhere near this quality, I'll be sure to purchase it.

Great read had me totally fooled!

This a good suspenseful novel you won't want to but down from page one. I for one hope I never have to find myself in the same situation I'm not sure if I could step up to the plate if I needed to, if you think like I do you go through life trying to be a good person who wouldn't harm another person. Read this book if you think you know yourself YOU WILL BE SURPRISED GUARANTIED. All that being said you won't believe how the story ends up, this is Jackson Spencer Bell's first novel hope it's not the last!

I was given this book in exchange for a review.

I enjoyed this book very much! It was an emotional roller coaster ride and although the ending was predictable it was an interesting journey getting there. I started to have my doubts about half way through when demons and golems started coming up but everything fell into place and made sense in the end.

I remember reading about one of the incidents that inspired this story and, like the author, was haunted by the event and the possibilities. This novel was very well done. I agree with a previous reader who felt like he was in an M Night Shyamalan movie. It was that good, and that surprising. I am looking forward to Mr. Bell's next novel.

Quite liked it. Nicely paced and gripping. Some of the sexual violence felt a bit overplayed. And the "twist" end was well done, but fairly obvious if you've been paying attention. Certainly not a waste of time though. And a pretty good first novel IMO.

Provocative Mystery

You can't please everybody, but you can always give your best in what you do. I think the author did a great job on this novel which explores the human mind in it's best and worst scenarios. I dislike reviews which detail too much information and possibly ruin a good read for someone else. I can say this is a mind bending story and i had a hard time putting it down. I applaud Mr Bell on a well thought out, provocative story that is as realistic as far too many of today's headlines.

This took an unusual turn for me, somewhere around the middle, but something had to give as it was beginning to get a little far-fetched so I was glad it went the way it did instead of taking a supernatural turn. I think it was an interesting idea - it did leave me asking questions, but in the same way some movies do when there’s twists and turns at the end, so that’s not necessarily negative. I would be curious to read another book by this author.

Confusing and Disappointing Ending.

You are wasting your time by going through the entire , what seems to be a pretty good read. But it is all for naught with a confused ending. Very disappointing.
