On the Edge

DANGER! RIDING TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE!

My life is one big caution sign. Ever since my best friend’s all-grown-up son joined our shared home, I’ve been navigating a growing attraction to the injured motocross rider. Declan unleashes every protective and caretaking impulse I have, and I genuinely love spending time with the guy.

But Declan’s too young, too straight, and too temporary to risk a twenty-year friendship over. At least until he kisses me, and I tumble past forbidden attraction into a doomed secret fling.

What starts as exploration for Declan quickly transforms into an undeniable bond. He’s exactly what I’ve been searching for: a ride-or-die partner in crime who is happy making blanket forts, talking late into the night, and shares my love of cozy books and movies. What could be more perfect?

When Declan faces a crucial choice, both our hearts are on the line. Can we avoid falling over the edge into heartbreak?

ON THE EDGE is book three of the Mount Hope first responder series and features an emergency room nurse practitioner who is hopelessly soft for his best friend’s son. This dad’s best friend, hurt/comfort (heavy on the comfort), age gap romance contains small town feels, big emotional growth, and sizzling romance. While certain subplot threads continue throughout the series, each guaranteed happily ever after stands alone!

Solid effort.

The hurt/comfort theme was well done. Jonas is a nurse for a reason. He loves taking care of people, especially Declan, who's broken and bruised, with a TBI to boot. Every time Declan wakes up, Jonas is there.

The relationship development was spot on: friendship first, followed by a slow burn. The cuddles made me melt.

Declan's presence at the end of book 1 finally makes sense. Declan is not homophobic; he's queer and deeply closeted.

The pressure on Declan to return to motorcross because his sponsors care more about their money than his health felt very real. Too many athletes are forced to perform when their bodies are screaming in pain.

Kudos to Sean, Declan's dad, for not making a big thing about Declan and Jonas dating. I was afraid there was going to be drama, but Sean handled the situation like a mature adult. Hallelujah!

Rounding down for a few reasons:

Declan and Jonas aren't into penetrative sex, which is fine. Different strokes and all that. Jonas tells Declan that anal isn't for everyone and other things feel even better, and so on. Again, fine, except I felt like I was being lectured. I've felt this way before in other lower steam Annabeth Albert books where she gets all preachy about "unconventional" sex or whatever and uses one of her characters as a mouthpiece.

Eric's teenagers are too present in the story (this is my big complaint about the series as a whole). Rowan is cute as hell, but did I need to know about Maren's crush? Ugh, no, I did not.

To rub salt in the wound, the epilogue gets taken over by Maren's big announcement that serves as a gateway to book 4, which will obviously be about Eric and the bar & grill owner (Magnus?)

I really don't want to read , so yeah.

Also, did anyone else think it was weird that Declan's mom all but disappeared in this book? Her son is life-flighted, yet she never shows up at the hospital or calls. It's mentioned that she's in Antarctica?? LMAO I guess that's one way to get rid of an ex. Just ship her out and forget about 'er.

As always Annabeth delivers on both the small town connected family vibes but also on the age gap romance with one of dad's best friends tropes without making things feel at all icky with the 20 years between Jonas and Declan.

After a serious accident while competing in his motocross championship, Declan's left needing help that he's unwilling to accept and, after a brief hospital stay, he returns to the grand Victorian house his dad's other best friend Eric owns.

Jonas is another of their friends house sharing to help Eric out after the death of his husband and to help with bringing up their four adopted kids.

What starts as an unlikely friendship which begin in hospital while Declan was still critically injured turns into something much deeper once he acknowledges his attraction to men, which has been ruthlessly pushed aside while he's been competing.

Declan has a fair bit of stored up anger and a touch of repressed homophobia to deal with because he's always been envious of how easy his dad had it when he came out.

The story flows at a steady pace throughout, there's no rapid jump from friends to lovers, more a slow burn that begins with long and languid kisses and into hand jobs and slow frotting. One thing I did enjoy from this narrative was the discussion both men have about how anal sex isn't the be all and end all for gay or bisexual men.

Neither of them has a burning desire for it and so they continue along with what they do find gives them a deep, emotional connection.

Of course, the path of true love never runs smooth, so there's a few hiccups on the way but never anything which feels chucked in just for the sake of it. Both men need to make some important life decisions but each make them for the right reasons - to better their own day to day happiness, not to please the other.

The teenagers are a solid part of the story but never interfere in its telling and they're always just an enjoyable addition to the setting rather than being the focus. I do like how each of them is so individual but they still create a lovely found expanded family in this old house.

Another solid entry for the Mount Hope series and now we've just got Eric's to go and it's going to be with who I hoped it might be (no spoilers though!) and I'm seriously looking forward to that.

#ARC kindly received from the author, I am voluntarily leaving a review

No matter what, I can always trust Annabeth to deliver something good. Usually age gap and dad's best friend aren't my thing because I don't like power imbalances and sometimes in father's best friend books it feels like the younger character's child self is too present in the older character's mind for my liking. Annabeth didn't steer me wrong however, as the power is in neither character's hands at any given point and they both give and receive and learn in a balanced manner, and child Declan isn't a thing going on on Jonas's mind. Yes, being his dad's friend brings tension, but it never is in a way that feels off. So even if these aren't your normal tropes, give it a shot. It's a good one.
And the cliffhanger at the end of the epilogue makes me feel like the next book might be potentially explosive, so yay!

There's a 20-year age gap between Jonas and Declan. I always hate that this usually always comes up as a huge problem in almost all romance books, no matter what genera they may fall into. If the couple are both adults what the heck difference should it make to their friends or their family members? Can't anyone just be happy for them and wish them well? Anyway...rant over:)

We briefly met Declan in book #2 of this series. in the opening chapter of book #3 he has had a serious accident while competing in a motorcross championship, which leaves him needing help that he's of course, unwilling to accept. After a hospital stay, and several of surgeries, including brain surgery, he returns to Mount Hope, Oregon, to the house that his dad and his dad's best friend Eric owns. While in the hospital, one of his dad's friends that also lives in the house goes to stay at the hospital. Jonas, being a nurse, is helpful in helping the others understand exactly what Declan's condition is and what his chances are of ever retuning to motorcross racing again. At this point the jury is out but there is going to be a LONG recovery time.

What starts in the hospital as an unlikely friendship soon turns into something much deeper once Declan can bring himself to acknowledge that he is bi and has an attraction to men, which has had to be pushed to the back burner while he's competing. Needless to say, Declan has a fair amount of stored up anger and a little repressed homophobia to deal with because he's always been envious of how easy his dad had it when he came out.

The story flows at a steady pace throughout, there's no rapid jump from friends to lovers, more a slow burn getting to know one another. Neither of them has a burning desire to go into anything fast so they continue along with what they find gives them a deep, emotional connection. Of course, we know in any of these books that the path to true love never runs smoothly. There are a few hiccups on the way. Both men need to make some important life decisions, but each of them makes them for the right reasons...to better their own lives and their happiness.

There are several others, mainly teenagers, living in the house also that are a big part of the story. The presence of the other characters seems to only enhance the story rather than take away anything. They help in creating an expanded family all living together in the old house.

This book, #3, is another beautiful and solid entry in the Mount Hope series. I guess that Eric's happiness is next, and I hope it's with who I think it will be. I'm really anxiously waiting that one.

This was fine, but I wanted to love it more than I did. The dynamic is generally one that works quite well for me, and I enjoyed it here, but something felt a little missing for me. The writing here felt a little more tell than show, and I was a little put off by the way the author went about neither of them really wanting penetrative sex. Totally fine, and great to have representation, but instead of feeling natural and organic to the story, it felt like the author really wanted to write a PSA about it and crammed it into the book, and it sort of made everything feel a little unsexy and forced. It also suffers from the small-town, multi-couple series syndrome, where there are a bajillion side characters from every book so far to the point of distracting from the main series, particularly because a lot of these characters are kids/teens, which isn't really my thing. I'm honestly not that interested in the pairing for the next book, but I'll probably give it a go.

B / 4 stars

Our third visit to the fictional Oregon town of Mount Hope and its close-knit family of first responders delivers an HEA for nurse practitioner Jonas Jensen with a character we’ve met briefly but who appeared the least likely to fall for another man. The author once again delivers a well-written and engaging small-town romance full of feels, found family connection and loving acceptance.

Motocross star Declan Murphy (son of Sean from Up All Night ) had a less than encouraging (one might even say decidedly homophobic) reaction to his dad's coming out, and now we learn the reason behind it. Declan has known for a long time that he’s not straight, but he’s buried his queerness for the sake of the sport he loves, and when Sean so easily announced his bisexuality, Declan couldn’t help feeling more than a bit jealous – and even angry that his Dad was able to come out so easily. Declan is deeply closeted and, sure that being openly queer could tank his career, feels he has no alternative but to remain that way while he’s still racing. But hiding such a major part of himself is taking a toll and he’s on edge nearly all the time.

Jonas loves his job as a senior nurse practitioner in the ER at the local hospital. He’s one of life’s natural caretakers, so when his friend Eric’s husband died a year earlier, Jonas and his dog, Oz, moved into the basement of Eric’s house so that he could help out with Eric’s four teenaged children. Jonas is something of a gentle giant, a big man who is highly competent and exudes confidence in his professional life, although with two divorces behind him (one from a woman, one from a man), he hasn’t had as much success with his personal one. He describes himself as a romantic; he wants someone to come home to, someone to look after and spoil, someone to spend time watching silly movies with while cuddled up on the sofa – he wants a relationship and everything that goes with it, but he hasn’t yet found a guy who wants the same things – and thinks that maybe he never will.

At the end of the previous book, we learned that Declan had been seriously injured in an accident during a race near Salt Lake City, and that Jonas had driven a distraught Sean and his partner to the hospital. When On the Edge begins, Declan is in a coma in the ICU, a TBI (traumatic brain injury) giving real cause for concern. Jonas can’t explain it, but he feels the strangest compulsion to remain with his friends – and with Declan, even though he doesn’t really know him – but there’s no doubt that Sean, especially, is in sore need of the kind of comfort and reassurance Jonas is so good at providing. Giving Sean a break from bedside-duty every now and then, Jonas takes to reading to Declan each day, which is how Jonas is at his bedside when he finally starts to regain consciousness.

After spending a few weeks at a rehab centre, Declan somewhat reluctantly comes to live in Mount Hope for a while, in the house Jonas shares with Eric and his kids. He’s prickly, frustrated, and finds it hard to accept help, but Jonas’ unflappable presence has a calming influence that slowly helps him to unwind, and over the following weeks, as the two of them spend more time together, their unexpected friendship grows and deepens. Jonas values it a great deal and genuinely enjoys Declan’s company, but the attraction he’s been feeling for the younger man for weeks now is growing steadily and he’s having to work hard to suppress it. Not only is Declan a lot younger than he is, he’s Sean’s son, he’s straight, and possibly homophobic; Jonas should absolutely not be feeling anything beyond friendship for this man - and yet he absolutely is.

Declan is struggling, too. Jonas intrugues him in a way no-one else ever has, and he’s drawn to his kindness and his air of quiet command – Jonas feels safe in a way most people don’t, and for the first time, Declan feels like he truly fits in somewhere, as though he doesn’t have to meet anyone’s expectations and can just be himself. He isn’t sure if he's gay, bi or whatever; all he knows is he’s not straight, he’s most definitely attracted to Jonas, and he wants more from him than friendship.

The romance between Jonas and Declan develops unhurriedly as they move from long, leisurely kisses to slow sexual exploration, and I liked their honest discussions about their likes and expectations. I’ve said this before, but the physical relationships in some romances can feel like sex-by-numbers, with penetrative sex seen as the only ‘real’ kind of sex, but Annabeth Albert’s characters frequently explore and prefer alternatives to penetration and I always appreciate that.

Ms. Albert excels at writing likeable characters with realistic personalities and problems which they generally approach in a mature and thoughtful manner. Jonas offers Declan exactly what he needs – a safe space to embrace the part of his sexuality he’s locked away for so long, and for him to start to give serious thought to his future beyond motocross. And while Jonas seems to have it all figured out, having something else in his life besides work opens his eyes to the fact that his drive to care for others means he’s been neglecting his own wants and needs. Both men have some big life decisions to make, and I liked that they give those decisions due consideration to make sure they’re making them for the right reasons.

The conflict in the story derives from Declan’s fears about being open about who he is, and the concern that Sean isn’t going to be happy when he finds out his twentysomething son is sleeping with (and falling for) his fortysomething long-time friend. I was really pleased with the way both issues are handled and resolved, especially with how Sean deals with the news about their relationship in such a loving and respectful manner.

The main issue I have with the romance is that the initial attraction – on both sides – seems to come a little out of nowhere, but overall, the relationship is very well-developed. The large age gap wasn’t an issue for me, but then I generally like May/December romances, and Annabeth Albert is one of the best when it comes to handling them properly. Jonas and Declan connect on a deeper level, appreciate the other for who they really are and there’s never any sense of a power imbalance because of their ages.

On the Edge is another enjoyable instalment in the Mount Hope series, and I'm sure fans of the author’s particular brand of small town, low drama romance won’t be disappointed.

Another wonderful romance in the Mount Hope series, this time for Jonas and Declan.
Jonas is the friend who is there for everyone else, currently living with Evan and his kids to help out since losing their husband/father. The one thing he finds himself wanting, but shouldn't have, is Declan, son of his friend, Sean. Declan is staying in Evans house as he's recovering from a bad Motocross crash, including broken bones and a TBI.
There is instant attraction on both sides but Jonas is worried about their age gap and his friendship with Sean, whereas Declan isn't out to anyone. It's a fairly low angst romance but there is the worry of being found out as they begin a secret romance and the what if of when Declan goes back to the world of Motocross. I enjoyed Jonas finally taking the time for himself, even if it is in secret, considering how much he does for work and everyone else, and Declan is getting to see how good things can be away from Motocross, especially as he thinks that he can't be his out as his true self in that world.
The series continues having a wonderful found family feel with everyone in Evan's house along with Sean and Denver popping in and out. Strong personalities especially in Rowan and Wren make for entertaining moments and Evan trying to set Jonas up with someone while Declan sits and seethes in secret is quite amusing.
A recommended read from the series and Annabeth, I enjoyed the story all the way through and can't wait for Evan to finally take that next step forward.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Declan is a motocross racer who’s just been injured. His father has a tight group of friends who rally around him, including Jonas. Jonas is an ER nurse supervisor and nurse practitioner so he’s initially there to help with the medical things and support his best friend.

But along the way he finds himself, wanting to be near Declan and help him. And he finds himself enjoying spending time with him. And Jonas seems to have a calming influence and somehow that makes Declan feel better during his recovery time. And as the closeness grows, so does an unlikely and forbidden attraction. This is his best friend's son and there’s a significant age gap and they are in close quarters since Declan is recovering in their multi-family home, but the more time they spend together the more time they enjoy it.

Jonas is such a big sweet teddy bear that just wants to give and receive love. But he seems to give and give to everyone else, including his job and his friend group. Declan is younger and has been more reckless in his career and has not allowed himself to explore anything with a man or with emotions tied to it. But Jonas gives him the safe space to try, discover, and let him be the man he’s always been afraid to be. But he hastto deal with what he’s going to do after he heals with his career and his life and figure out if he’s ready for possible backlash admitting his own sexuality.

And even though they may be an unlikely match, it’s not that they’re an unhealthy match. They actually connect on a deeper level and truly appreciate the other for who they really are and want to support each other. But they’ve got challenges between their jobs, their shared friend and family group, age difference, And the fact that there could be a long distance component even if they decided to try.

But I liked that they were mature and communicated and allowed each other to grow and heal, and feel empowered to make their life their own and figure out what they really wanted and needed. This brings back the rest of the guys, their significant others, and the teens. I am looking forward to widower and dad, Eric’s book next, and I got a hint of who his love interest will be. II am excited about this match and the plot line that is brewing.

On the Edge was a cosy, slow burn romance full of cuddles and hurt / comfort!

I loved the hurt / comfort here, Jonas was a natural caretaker and it was sweet how dedicated he was to take care of Declan after his motocross accident. Every time Declan woke up, Jonas was there, and it wasn't surprising that the two of them started to feel a connection to each other. The slow burn was perfect for them, and them going from friends to lovers felt like a seamless progression. They took their time exploring and there were a lot of kissing and cuddling, which I just adored.

There were some bumps along the road, Declan was deeply in the closet, and had quite a few things to come to terms with while healing from his injuries. Jonas was initially a bit hesitant about their age gap, as well as his friendship with Sean, Declan's father, which also added some tension to the story. It was a low angst story overall though, and I appreciated how there wasn't any drama or conflicts once they announced their relationship.

On the Edge was a sweet and heartwarming addition to the Mount Hope series, and I loved the relationship development together with the hurt / comfort between Declan and Jonas. I've grown very fond of these characters and setting - Annabeth Albert is great at writing cosy small towns and found families, and this series has been no exception. The ending left me with a lot of curiosity about the next book, and I can't wait to see what Eric's story will bring!

Annabeth Albert certainly knows how to wrote a small town romance that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. This is the third book in the Mount Hope series and it’s just as enjoyable and entertaining as the previous instalments.
Jonas and Declan are the featured couple in this age/gap meets hurt/comfort meets Dad’s best friend romance. Circumstances have Declan temporarily moving into the household where Jonas lives and immediately the caretaking side of Jonas comes to the fore. As he and Declan spend more time together sweet kisses slowly morph into more and the bond between is undeniable. Although there’s minimal angst important life decisions need to be made and some personal growth is required for both of these wonderful men as they work their way to a heartwarming HEA. A HEA filled with lots of cuddles, snuggles and kisses, reading together and finally having what you’ve always wanted.
I really enjoyed this book, it left me with a huge smile on my face at the end and I’m genuinely looking forward to the next in the series.

I anticipated this book the most in this series but found it very underwhelming. The whole ‘son of best friend’ idea was exciting but there wasn’t any good tension around the trope and that actually made the rest of the book quite boring to me.

ENG-So well well well...well I loved coming back to Mount Hope so much!

This third book is really just as good as the first two. With On the Edge, Annabeth Albert does what she does best. Strong and touching romances, endearing characters. A small town in which you want to settle down. A family, blood or chosen, united.  In short, all the elements that we like to find in the author's romances.

Here I really liked the relationship between Declan and Jonas.

I of course loved meeting all the characters from the previous books. But On the Edge is almost a closed session because Annabeth Albert focuses on the relationship between Jonas and Declan. I really liked that their relationship was simple. That despite the circumstances, they learn to discover themselves and their feelings for each other.

Jonas' past is briefly touched upon and I liked that Annabeth Albert did not dwell on it in the sense that it was not the subject of the novel. Here we talk about finding yourself, rebuilding yourself after an ordeal and opening up to others.

One of the elements that I like most in Annabeth Albert's romances is the diversity.

In each novel, the author explores a new aspect of sexuality. Whether in the different letters of the Queer alphabet or in sexuality in the broader sense. And On the Edge is no exception to the rule.

I really liked this aspect of this novel and the way the characters approach it.

With On the Edge, Annabeth Albert signs an excellent books in an equally excellent series.

Book 3 in the series, can definitely be a stand alone. But why? I love this group of close knit friends who are in their 40's, supporting each other and finding love (not with each other, teehee).

I really wondered who this one would play out. Because it's one of the 40 something guys and the son of one of his friends. So we're talking a 20 year age difference and these guys are all in each other's pockets living on the same property. But it was so smooth.

That was my thought through the book. It was smooth. Declan and Jonas didn't jump into anything. Well, after fighting it for a bit. Declan because he is a motocross rider and in the closet and Jonas because Declan is the son of one of his best friends.

An accident and then proximity bring them together. But really, Jonas reading to a first unconscious Declan had me swooning. And they continued it throughout the book. Even when things started heating up between them, they still had nights where they would cuddle and read. I mean, come on. How can you not love that?

Hearing about Jonas' upbringing was an interesting part of the story. I love that it was PART of his story, but he didn't make it his whole story. And although their situations were completely different, that shared lack of parenting brought them together more.

If you've read the other books, we get a lot of Eric's kids. Wren and Rowan the most (fingers crossed for a Rowan story down the line!). They are entertaining without drawing all of the attention. Surprisingly, Declan's father, Sean, wasn't as big a part of the story as I was expecting. But I liked it because there was less tip toeing around.

The age difference also isn't a big factor. It's brought up, but not frequently. Some stories it's all they talk about and it gets boring. Not so here. Oh. And Jonas being all hairy and NOT buff, perhaps even a big squishy. Loved it!

I've already thought about how book 4 will go as there were big changes happening with the friend group and their partners. And with Eric's kids. **here's my eyes popping out of my head at the epilogue**

One of the reasons series are so much fun to read is you get to know characters before we get to read about them finding their person.
Jonas is always the one to step in and help take care of everyone around him, he moved in to help his friend after his husband died. He steps in to help take care of the teens and he always helps out at the hospital where he is a nurse. But it just seems that he often overlooks himself. Readers really didn’t know much about Jonas or his past, but we knew that he was a giant teddy bear. He is one of my favorite characters in this series, he is strong, steady, and seems to always know when to listen and what to say. But in On the Edge it is clear that Jonas is lonely; there really isn’t anyone that takes care of Jonas. So when he steps in once again to help his friend's son recuperate after an accident ... .the feels just couldn’t be helped.
Declan is a daredevil, and loves to be on his dirt bike. His adrenaline is always pumping and he strives to be better and better. It is almost like if he sat still long enough then he would need to face his feelings and tackle some of his deepest darkest fears. After an accident halts his career he recuperates near his dad. Declan is really misunderstood, my heart really hurt for him. He definitely has some relationship repairing to do and I think grew the most in this book. I really love how he went with his gut and followed his heart- and his heart lead him to Jonas.
While Joans and Declan might seem like an odd pair to the outside world; however they really balanced one another out and their emotional connection was so apparent as a reader I had no choice but to 100% be in their corner. Declan needs someone to ground him, and take him seriously. While Jonas needs someone to remind him that he is worth putting himself first sometimes. If you love an age gap with a teddy bear of a bear, a found family, small town, and a strong emotional connection this needs to be on your kindle!

I can always rely on Annabeth Albert for the best age-gap romance. To throw a wrench into these stories, there is often the element of dad’s best friends or something similar. It seems like it shouldn’t work, but it sure does!

Declan has a lot of internal homophobia. Or, more to the point, he is jealous of those out of the closet without it being a problem. To his mind, it’s so easy for everyone else to live as their true selves while it’s almost impossible for him to do so. Of course that’s not true, but that’s how things look from where he’s standing. Getting injured while he’s at the top of his sport and having to convalesce in his dad’s small queer friendly town brings those bitter feelings to the forefront. But it also gives him time to figure out who he is and what he wants.

Although Jonas has played a big part in the lives of everyone in this series, I didn’t feel I knew much about him other than the surface stuff. I knew he was a nurse and a natural caregiver. I knew he was gay and took care of his best friend’s spouse while he was dying. I knew he was great with kids. I didn’t know how he grew up, how he came to be in Mount Hope, what relationships he had in the past, or all of the other things that shaped him into the man he is now. Boy, he has a lot of past trauma. Yet he’s dealt with it and it has armed him to be able to help others in a way many don’t understand.

This couple is fantastic. Jonas’s friends adore him, but they have known him so long they no longer see him. Declan sees Jonas and loves what he sees. There is an instant attraction and I was so angry every time Declan would get too in his head and push Declan away. But even Declan cannot deny their pull for long. I love how vulnerable they are with each other. It starts with Declan seeming to be the vulnerable one, but soon it’s obvious Jonas is just as vulnerable.

There is so much this story has going for it; love, lust, fear, angst, humor, found family, acceptance from others and of self, chemistry. This book was everything I was looking for.

ON THE EDGE is the third installment in the Mount Hope series. Age gap, Dad's best friend, sexual awakening love story.

Jonas has been living with Eric and his kids since his husband died almost two years ago. Jonas is a nurse and loves what he does. When his best friend's son is in the hospital in a different state Jonas doesn't hesiatate to drive with Sean and his husband Denver to be there for them. What he didn't expect was the need and want to protect Declan. The quiet moments they spend together has Jonas seeing the warning signs that he can't be attracted to Declan and then when he moves into Eric's house to keep healing and working through rehab. Jonas can't keep his distance. They connect so much and when Declan kisses him Jonas can't pull away even though he knows he should. Will his friendship with Sean survive Jonas falling in love with is son?

Declan lives and breaths for motocross except when he has to hide who he is. He's lucky to be alive from the crash he suffered in the championship. All he wants to is to get back to the track but his body just isn't on board. When he moves into Eric's house to be close to his dad and go to rehab he realizes spending time with Jonas just makes him want to spend more time with him. Yes Jonas is older but something about his calming personality sets Declan at ease. While they have a secret relationship Declan learns more about himself then he thought possible. Their chemistry is explosive and they are so sweet with each other. Jonas's need to take care of someone and Declan's need to fit in somewhere has them the perfect match.

I love this little town that Albert has created. I have been dying for Eric's story and I am so thrilled it's next!

I was given a free copy of this book to read and review by the author.

On the Edge is the third book in the Mount Hope series by the fabulous Annabeth Albert. I am loving Mount Hope and all who live there. I was a little reluctant for this one since Declan didn't sit well with me in Sean's book, but now that I've really met him and seen his struggles, I'm on Team Declan! He's Sean's son and he got into an accident. Sean, Denver and Jonas rush to be with him. Jonas ends up spending a lot of time with Declan. Just sitting and reading to him. They have a connection and Declan isn't ready to admit what that means. When Declan ends up going home and staying at Eric's house with Jonas things heat up. He's still recovering, but his feelings for Jonas and growing and real. He always knew he was different, but in his sport, there was no coming out. He's not even sure what he would label himself, but that doesn't matter. It's Jonas. He wants him. He's got a connection with him. Period. Who cares if he's his dad's friend and a lot older? Jonas does. But all of that can't keep him away from Declan. He wants to sit with him, read to him, touch him. But he knows it's temporary and that's ok. He's trying to learn how to say no at work and not accept every shift. He loves his job, but he realizes there's something else he could be doing with his time. If and when Declan gets cleared to go back to racing, he needs to decide what's important. Family, love or the job. Spoiler alert: This is Annabeth so we know what he decides! I really did love these two! I felt so much for Declan and how much he was struggling. Once he figured it out though, he was sweet and all in. It was great to see everyone again. I love the families and the kids. Looking forward to Eric's story! Yay!

This pair's book I feel has been in the making for a while. They have been supporting characters in the first few books of this series and I am glad that they are finally getting their story.

Jonas is a nurse practitioner in a local ER and works a lot. He is part of a close group of friends and is there for his friend Sean when his son, Declan gets hurt riding motorcross competitively. He helps not only Sean but Declan with the medical aspects of Declan's recovery but the more that he is around Declan, the more he wants with him.

Declan has been on a rollercoaster lately between his dad's coming out and then him not sure of his own sexuality on top of competing on a professional level. He ends up having a near career ending injury that he needs to navigate the recovery of as well as his feelings of possibly not returning to the sport that he loves while also trying to figure out his feelings for Jonas. The conflictions keep coming making Declan question a lot and leaving us the reader wanting the best for him.

This was a good read that I enjoyed from the start as well as the rest of this series. I didn't really feel the age difference between Jonas and Declan was a real issue for me as a reader. Their story was relatable and well written leaving me cheering for them to get their HEA. I enjoyed this read from start to finish and would recommend it to others.

I loved this story! Bottom line -- it was the sweetest love story I've read in a long time. It included a pro motocross racer who was deep in the closet and his slow awakening attraction to his dad's best friend, an ER ARNP (the cover model), who was a people pleaser and all-around good guy.

The support characters were well-known from earlier in the series and there was a sneak peek at characters coming in book four, which I happen to have already read and loved. This series actually started out weak for me, having only barely liked book one and book two, but then I fell in love with book four so picked up book three, which is now my favorite of the series.

The emotions were beautifully played out and the couple fell in love slowly, becoming close friends and then lovers who frotting and kissing to be exactly what they preferred. Their alone time was precious to them and that was conveyed to readers by their words and actions. Their coupledom was exactly right, fitting together like puzzle pieces.

There's so much to each character's back story and current life situation that I won't go into details here but I will remember this as a love story that didn't require a lot of sex-on-page time to play out in order to hold a reader's interest. Imagine that! A story full of love and character and plot.

Highly recommended.

This was the best in the series so far. As I wrote in previous reviews for book #1&2 this series tends to move a bit too fast for my liking. in this book it seemed like the author took notice and lest the relationship build slower and it was a vast improvement.
Her book are some of my favorites, and she has a very good ability to build a community and connect stories and characters in an interesting way.
Jonas and Declan have a slow buildup with friendship turning into secret romance, due to Declan being closeted, Jonas being older and his dad's friend.
I felt like we finally got a good relationship arc, with Declan's injury and recovery a constant presence in the story (as opposed to being diminished and used as a prop for the relationship). I enjoyed the romance, the steam between them, even though it still felt like it was too fast. like Jonas was already feeling attraction for the beginning in the hospital when he barely knew Declan and he was so injured. It could have been more gradual foe me.

These books follow a very predictable timeline, and are similar in their themes, but I don't hate it. I do like the authors older books more and feel like they had more interest and character development.

That said, I am waiting for the next books.

I am grumpy and this book did not help.

So.

Take that as warning before you proceed (not like anyone besides myself reads my reviews lol)

Uuuuuuuuuggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Declannnn . What a whiney, immature dumbass.

Jonas was … fine?

I did not vibe with this couple at all , I just didn’t buy into it this time

I don’t know man , I’m a pretty large Annabeth Albert fan but ugh this book was not it for me.

I found it icky that Jonas was weirdly lusting Ba ter a dude who legit JUST got into a serious motocross accident . And then Declan goes from “oh no! Not a possible gay scene 2 books from now” to “ ima kiss a man and then immediately let him jerk me off” in pretty much 5 pages. I understand there was a time lapse but everything felt disconnected/ random and jerky as far as sequence and plot went. I also found the weirdly intense focus on the fact they didn’t do or enjoy penetrative sex. Like … ok? I don’t enjoy feet stuff but you don’t see me continually bringing up how I’m not into it

I’m going to read the rest of the series most likely especially with the random pregnancy reveal at the verrryyyyy end of the epilogue but holy mother of gay romance books I did not enjoy this one to the point where this is more like a 2.5 star for me
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This is the third book in the Mount Hope series and it could be enjoyed as a standalone. This is the story of Declan and Jonas and it is a slow burn romance. Declan is a professional motocross racer. Jonas is a nurse. The two meet when Declan crashes during a race with severe injuries. He is taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. His father and boyfriend drive from Portland to Salt Lake. Always wanting to help, Jonas joins them on the drive. As Declan is unconscious and suffering from brain injuries, Jonas starts to read to him from his mystery e-book on his phone. When Declan needs to move closer to a rehab facility, Jonas offers up his friends house in Mount Hope. That is where he is staying as well. This is their story. The book is written well and is easy to read. I enjoyed the conversations between Declan and Jonas as Declan is healing. There is an age difference between them but it wasn't a big issue. Overall I enjoyed the book but it isn't my favourite in the series. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I received a complementary advance review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I wasn't necessarily wary about Annabeth Albert taking on a story that involved a twenty-year age gap and one of the main characters being the son of the other main character's best friend. I've read enough of this author's books to know that she knows what she's doing. She repaid that trust by offering up a strong romance that was a teeny bit more sweet than it was steamy. In short, it had a great deal of heart and just enough heat, and you won't hear me complaining because it simply worked well when it came to Jonas and Declan. Jonas simply wants a partner to love and care for, while Declan has spent too many years with his internalized homophobia, no thanks to something that happened early on in his motocross career. These two deserved a win, and you know what they say, love always--ALWAYS--wins. I loved seeing them build a relationship based on communication, trust, affection, and attraction. I also appreciated that the perceived complications, i.e. Declan's career and Jonas and Sean's friendship, weren't over-dramatized. All in all, On the Edge was a heartwarming and very satisfying read. 4.5 stars!

Declan, a motocross racer, faces recovery after an injury, with the support of his father’s close-knit friends, including Jonas, an ER nurse supervisor. Initially there to provide medical assistance, Jonas finds himself drawn to Declan, and their bond deepens as they spend time together in the multi-family home where Declan is healing. Despite the significant age gap and the complexities of their relationship—Jonas being his best friend's son—their attraction grows into a profound connection.

Jonas, a nurturing figure, creates a safe space for Declan to explore his emotions and sexuality, which he has been hesitant to confront. As Declan navigates his recovery and contemplates his future, he grapples with the implications of admitting his true self, especially in the context of their shared social circle and potential long-distance challenges.

Their relationship blossoms through mature communication and mutual support, allowing both characters to grow. As they confront external challenges, they also reinforce their bond, highlighting the depth of their connection.

On the Edge is the next installment in Annabeth Albert's Mount Hope series. Y'all, we are talking about low drama dad's best friend romance.

Declan is a motocross rider and gets hurt during a race. Not wanting to go home to his dad's place, he moves into the "big house" and slowly over time grows closer and closer to Jonas, his dad's best friend.

This book is low angst and deals a lot with internalized homophobia and struggling to come out.

This is a wonderful found family series, and seeing these queer first responders & helpers fall in love is an absolute treat. I'm excited for Eric's story and to be sucked back into all the drama the teens create.

ON THE EDGE is out tomorrow! And all the other Mount Hope books and the novella are available now if you're wanting to read about a fire chief or a football coach or an emt  or an overworked nurse practioner 😂😂😂 there's lots of falling in love happening in Mount Hope.

Jonas deserves an overabundance of love. That guy gives and gives and gives. It’s his turn to find happiness. Someone to care about him, and put him first.

At first, I worried Declan wouldn’t deserve him. So angry about his accident, so determined to not consider others in his decision to keep riding. A little too self-involved. But ultimately he’s a pretty good match. He mellows and Jonas loves him. I enjoy their quiet moments reading cozy mysteries together.

I love that there wasn’t any crazy drama around Jonas dating his BFFs son. And there’s no awkward age-gap weirdness.

Another great small-town romance by a fav author.

Nobody Does Sweet, Romantic and Sexy Like Annabeth

Annabeth Albert is one of my go-to authors for characters who feel so real and true that I have a hard time returning to reality at the end of the book. On the Edge is another such incredible story. What draws me in is much more than the intense sexual chemistry - which Declan and Jonas have enough of to set a small forest ablaze - it’s the tender, genuine emotional connection they share. This is a love built on small moments, not grand gestures. It’s Jonas reading to Declan, starting when Declan first wakes up in the hospital. It’s cuddles in the living room and long conversations about worries and dreams and making each other smile. It’s learning how to put themselves and each other first, not all at once, but step by step, together. Jonas and Declan were inevitable, one sweet, slow, gorgeous kiss at a time. One million stars.
