90's Love In Cali

Rate this book
A ‘90’s Love In Cali’ novella gives you the nostalgic, laid-back vibe of how love and relationships went back in the day.
Alize goes hard for the people she loves, only to feel like she’s always left with the short end of the stick. Hustling by day and stripping at night to make ends meet, she’s hit with a bomb that can either make or break her until she meets a handsome man by the name of Cook.
Cook is the man in the streets and is also very mysterious. He opens Alize up by breaking down her walls. Cook is the definition of showing how a man should love on a woman. This is a fast pace short story with emotions, humor, and love!

COOK WAS THAT NIGGA. Plain and fucking simple. And the audacity of Rich and Alize's bestfriend. Chyyyy. This was a cute little novella. I need to read the rest of the series.

Solid Read

This was a quick read and good read. The way masterpiece setup the scene it felt like watching an urban romance movie from the 90s. Alize was that girl! Strong, confident, big heart, had ambition and went for hers. She went through a lot with Rich that she didn’t have to since a young age. However, when God is really trying to make you leave something bad He’ll break you so you grow into the person you’re meant to be. The betrayal that happened to Alize was messed up but it dang sure was for the best. Even the storyline with her mother and how she handled that was good. My girl wasn’t going to break.

Now Cook was Big Dawg and was given a lot of respect while being low key with it. He definitely didn’t mind opening up but of course it takes the right person. She didn’t mind being open with him either. Once he seen how Alize moved which was similar to him my guy was on her. Him falling first was so cute. Truly enjoyed their love, the spice and boss mentality.

Alize was everything—she’s the definition of a true hustler, doing whatever it takes to make ends meet. Her drive and the way she carried herself really hit home for me; it all just felt so familiar, maybe because they’re from Cali! And Cook? He was that man—confident, direct, and giving off serious BDE. He had that handsome Black man energy, and I couldn’t help but picture Lance Gross while reading. Alize, on the other hand, gave me total Foxy Brown vibes with her boldness and style.

Rich and Clarice? They were completely out of line—Alize didn’t deserve any of that. And Choc? She was the one real homegirl every girl needs—unapologetically herself and always solid. Her loyalty and love for Alize were unmatched. This book had such a real and gripping vibe, and I couldn’t put it down!

Love and Ambition

Alizé was the definition of an “it” girl. Lusted after by all the men and envied by a lot of women. She was a true hustler. Getting to the paper must have been her middle name. Being betrayed by those closest to her didn’t stop her grind. She went harder refusing to let anyone derail her ambitions.

Cook is the epitome of masculinity—confident yet humble. A mystery to most. He doesn’t boast or brag; he was simply that dude. Once he sets his sights on Alizé, he demonstrates what it means to truly treat a woman right. He listened to her and inspired her to turn her dreams into reality.

This sweet romantic novella beautifully captures the essence of love and ambition in the 90s. If you’re looking for a heartfelt story with strong characters, this is definitely one to check out!

I find it hard to rate such a short novella so I’m not gonna. But this story was super fast paced, funny, and angsty. The FMC, Alize, was done dirty by many people who should have been first in line to have her back but she never gave up on herself. The MMC, Cook is a smooth dude. The synopsis on the back of the book describes him as mysterious and he definitely is…to the point that I can’t say that I learned anything about him that wasn’t just confirmation of the rumors people spread about him. I did like how he moved with Alize though.

I liked this quick read from Masterpiece with 90s vibes from French rolls to Coogi everything lol.

Awww a lovely story

Hey, this book was a wild ride! Alize's journey through family chaos, backstabbing friends, and chasing her dreams was totally intense. But you know what? Sometimes things actually work out in the end.

Beepers, crying guys, flip phones, doobies, R&B. Casual, girly indulgence. A couple, Alize the snappy L.A. stripper, and Rich the remorseful chest, can fight or flirt on a dime. Almost overload on physical descriptions on the two since they’re cocky. Girl dances as Kitty yet wants to be a cozy housewife down the road, so she’s not into extras though she can get loud snipping or lezzing out (as a far off-the-clock joke?).

Crazy turn of events pretty early. Damn, imagine that bombshell being dropped on YOU. Humiliated by and in front of everyone. The revenge is surprisingly funny at first. Slang is fitting without being overdone (though some things I doubt, like a dude saying he wouldn’t care if a girl is autistic. That feels like a more modern/medical term, espec cause girls hardly were known to have it).

It’s after a breakup and still working à club, Alize meets Cook. Ew, is she really hump-dancing in à pool of milk (and the phrase southern lips is gross)? She’s sorta like a madame/small weed dealer so brings girls to his house party. I like when we go back to following Rich, his obsession in his new life. Alize thinks about opening a salon like most girls in these types of books, but it’s not really specific. Lots of tell about how her and new guy connect by “opening up” but we don’t even know about what. He seems romantic/sexy enough for her speed, or the thought of a man trying to “lead a woman” in all ways is intriguing, but it just felt a bit vague.

Love all the Tommy Hilfiger fashion. It’s good they waited to have sex, setting a bit unique. Telling Choc about the other revenge she got seemed random and glossed over after so much time. WTH, Chocolate’s stories are always craziest, funniest in gross ways. The sort of soliloquies about what they want at the end felt a bit too unnatural or Hallmarky.

The epilogue is what romances always are. I’d have rather had more of that in scene, à bigger timeline for the book even if the page count was similar. Seems we shoulda either had less time with Rich or made him more of a foe for a long time so there’s more relationship testing/conflict. Same with the mom. A good simple Valentine/spring love read though. Except I find the “normally you’re not my type/I wouldn’t have looked at you” line offensive, moment-ruining.

Book Review: 90’s Love in Cali by Masterpiece – 4.5 Stars

90’s Love in Cali was an incredible novella packed with drama, vibes, and a perfect mix of spice and plot—all within just 102 pages. Masterpiece delivered a story that immerses you in the ’90s, from the music and slang to the fashion and hairstyles, nailing the vibe of the era flawlessly.

The FMC, Alizé, was a standout character for me. She’s fiercely loyal, a hustler, and a talented stripper who’s dealt a heartbreaking betrayal by both her longtime boyfriend and best friend. But after getting her lick back, Alizé embarks on a journey of growth and healing. Along the way, she meets Cook, a fine, charming plug who treats her like the princess she is. Their connection felt real, and I loved watching Alizé flourish as she moved forward from her past.

This novella was a love letter to the ’90s, brimming with nostalgia and authenticity. Masterpiece managed to pack so much into a short, fast-paced story, and I’m already excited to see what comes next.

If you love drama-filled novellas with fierce heroines and strong vibes, 90’s Love in Cali is a must-read.

Friends That’s Your Family

This was a beautiful book and I love the different personalities amongst the Friend Girls!!!…I love how these women laughed through their pain, and stayed together to see each other through the changes life brought about!!!…
These ladies were living different lives, but filled each other spirits and worked to keep each other healthy, mentally and emotionally!!!…

My heart broke for Perdy, but I love how her friends had the strength and protection for her!!!…I hope there is something coming for Miss Perdy because I think she is going to truly be the breakout friend!!!…
Rich truly learned that the grass was green in yard he lived in and now he’s watching it continue to grow while someone else enjoys it!!!…
Alize was that friend and I love that went hard for her friends and family!!!…Her mother needs a healing for heart and I was glad to see them on the mends with their relationship!!!…
Cool was that man that allowed her to grow and encouraged her growth!!!…There is NOTHING like a man that pours into you and help you achieve your goals and fulfill your dreams!!!…

This book gave all the 90s feels. Alize was not to be played with, and she proved it to her so-called man, Rich. This book took me way back with the bamboo earrings, pagers, and Nokia cellphone. The street lit up with people having a good time listening and jamming with the boombox on. So you know that I enjoyed reading and reminiscing on my teenage and young adult years. I felt that hurt that Alize felt when Rich and Clarice betrayed her in the most disrespectful way. I wanted to fight Clarice myself because how she going to allow Alize to use her savings to throw her a baby shower when she having a baby by Alize’s nicca. That was too foul and I’m glad that Choc got at her after she had the baby. It felt good to see the time, affection, and love that Cook bestowed upon Alize to show her different than the toxicity that she had with Rich. I’m still laughing at Choc and Bills in the shower scene because Baby I’m crying😂😂

Speedy but 🔥 read

Let's just say you are going to love Alize she is literally about her grind and money. When she finds out her no good lying bitch ass 🥷🏾 out here knocked up her beastie she lit his car up with holes and went all Muhammad Ali on his ass...as she should of, then Cook entered her life and elevated her mindset and had her really tapping into her dreams. Loved the banter between her and the girls and how they were there for each other. Alize mom made me want to literally slap the taste out there but they worked it out...this was such a fun short romance that just makes you want a man like cook in ya corner💜😊

90s Nostalgia in full effect

When you had me you didn’t treat me right, now that I’m gone you want to right your wrongs. It’s a little too late. Listen, Rich was SICK to his stomach over Alize being done with him…. for good! All of the feels for the non-sexual intimacy shared between Cook & Alize, friends before lovers. Cook was patient and understanding while Alize worked to open up again after the betrayal she went through. Cook was a MAN & helped Alize become aware of her full potential and helped her grow. Alize’s bounce back was profound! Ohhh to be back in the 90s, great depiction of that time!

Alize and Cook!!!!!!

Alize and Cook!!!!!
That get back a mf!!!!! This book really had me thinking I was back in the 90s with my beeper and cellphone that I could only use after 9:00pm. Rich thought because he had history with Alize he could do what he wanted and in a couple of months they’ll be back together. When Cook told Alize to give that ^*€€@ the closure the needs I knew he was playing the long game. If your friends ain’t rolling like Choc get some new ones🤣. I’m glad the mother/daughter relationship was touched on because her mom was pissing me off. Alize knew what she wanted and did not hesitate to let Cook know what she required. Overall great read!!!

Baaaaaaabbbbbyyyyy.... You see Alize and Cook 🥵🥵🥵🥵.... That's what I call a good 90's Love Story in Cali!!! You see Rich and Clarice could 🤬🤬🤬... Chocolate and Perdy are what I call real ride or die best friends!!! Cook was a MAN... That man was intellectual and was able to communicate with a woman. What woman doesn't want a man that can express what they want from a woman... Not only did he communicate but his actions spoke louder than words... Sometimes us as women can go through things that can either make us or break us. Alize was a hustler but most of all she was a lover and she loved hard.

Masterpiece you wrote a wonderful novella 🩷

🔥🔥🔥

This short novella was indeed a page turner, Aliza went through a lot from her mother, cheating boyfriend, and snake of a best friend. I don't think the fact that Rich got her best friee/roommate pregnant I felt it was the betrayal, disloyalty that she felt between the two people she held so very close to; but like Cook told her things happened a certain way because they were meant to happen. Rob was a trip trying to show boat, then trying to speak ill on Aliza in order to turn Cook against her but so happy when they talked she told him everything, becoming friends first is what made their love genuine as well as strong.

Very Nice📚

Very nice read! Funny and full of fashion from the 90’s!!

That era was the era where some friends didn’t treasure friendship! Back then a lot of friendship ended behind boys/men! Most of the drama was behind her say she say so to read about it just really brought back memories lol!

Enjoy the connect between Cool and Alize! His low vibe was life!

Overall a nice read!!!

90’s Love In Cali

Mannn the visuals that you painted was EVERYTHING! Alize was a baddie that seemed to always be on go! Rich & Clar betrayed her with the upmost disrespect & I was all for whatever she felt need to happen as a consequence. Cook stepped with all the BDE! I loved him from the start. Rob & her mom were haters but I’m glad moma got it together. Choc & Perdy were good friends. I’d love to see Perdy’s world. Great kick off!!!

Alize had a big heart but her ex made her build this big ass wall up and Cook broke that wall down. Alize gets the love that she deserves from Cook he was that low key dude and they both fell in love. This was a beautiful and short story. Go read it!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed "90's Lov in Cali" by author Masterpiece. Alize's journey to new love was heartwarming, and her friends Perdy and Choc provided admirable support. Their presence was a testament to meaningful friendships. I'm curious about a potential spin-off exploring Perdy's story, given her circumstances. Thankfully, Alize's prompt help showcased her dedication. This concise read was delightful.

Rules of Engagement

😮‍💨Give me strength thru the deception reflection🤔‼️ “90’s Love In Cali”, disappointed with a couple of the characters from this book. Nevertheless, Alize persevered through the betrayal, ridicule & humiliation to discover her confident, companion & lover in Mr. Cook. What a profound & pleasant surprise as he eloquently expressed their rules of engagement (incidentally ROE was a great movie too)🤩😍‼️Cai was a mysterious but good read.

Cali love

This was such a good short novella. I could not put it down. I was angry in the beginning at how they did my girl Alize but she came out even better in the end. She fell for someone that uplifted her and helped her upgrade her damn self. This book is without a doubt in my top 10 favorite reads this year.
