DNF at 30%

So, in a very expected turn of events, I must DNF this book. This is actually my first time DNFing a book, something I´ve always been reluctant to do, but I´ll put more in practice in the near future, cause honestly, I can´t do this anymore.
It seems unfair to me to keep on investing my time in something I clearly dislike, so I simply won´t do it. It´s a change of heart and mind, but I know deep in my chore that it´s for the better.

This book has been sitting on my kindle for weeks now, and though I tried to make it past the 30% mark, it seems I couldn´t even force myself to do, at least, that. So, it´s endgame for me and this book.

I could blame this on just another case of "it´s me, not you", but I´d be lying.
This is definitely 100% on the book and only the book.
This is also a first to me, cause I´ve always been against rating or reviewing dnfed books, and yet here I am ( never say never, huh?). The reason I´m doing this is because it´s the least thing I can do, since this was giving to me freely in exchange of an honest review. So, here´s that.
Keep in mind that this review will be based on how much of the book I´ve read so far, meaning this is a partial review, and not a take on the whole book.

For starts, I wasn´t liking the story, and that´s the main reason why I decided to call it quits.
And also, just like almost every single book I´ve dared to touch this year, I found out that while the premise may seemed interesting, the execution was not to par.

According to the blurb, we follow the story of a bunch of youngsters living in a secluded, ultrarreligious community, completely isolated from the rest of the world, who are force to marry between them, when they turn 18. Our protagonist, doesn´t want that for her life, so she elaborates a plan to get away from that place, after she and her friends uncovered a terrible secret. Or that´s what we are supposed to believe.

One of my many issues with this novel is that we are told things instead of being shown. We are supposed to buy the oppresive atmosphere of the community, and their religious fanatism, but we are never shown that. There´s a thing or two tossed over there, but never enough to actually buy it.
I also had trouble understanding where and when exactly this story is taking place.

There are descriptions of a forest, sure, but they were insufficient to place the reader in the place. Same for the fictional historic period time this is happening. Some characters wield swords and bows, setting this on a medieval time? But the, the moment they open their mouths, whatever comes out of it is so generation z it´s almost jarring. Besides the fact that dialogues seemed very unreaslitic and artificial. I just could´t buy people talking that way. In fact, there was never a moment I felt this world or this characters real or came to life.

And speaking of the characters....I felt them very flat and unidimensional, because their whole personality was built around a trait and that was it. The rebellious runaway girl was just that, and we are never told what´s the reason for her to get away, besides that she just doesn´t want to marry. Or the overprotective muscle guy who´s just strong and hot. Or the smartass guy who´s just smart. And yeah, hot. Call me picky, but I want my characters with a little more gravitas.

Another reviewer said she found the characters a little bit stupid. Well, I wouldn´t go as far to say that, but I´ll admit their decisions to be at least, questionable.
I mean, I find it hard to believe that first thing you do when discovering a terrible truth about your ultrarreligious and super secretive community is shouting over the rooftops to every fellow youngster who wants to hear it.
Or that your genius plan to escape is to set the whole wooden fence on fire, alerting all the people you didn´t want to know you were escaping in the first place.

Maybe it´s just me liking my books with proper plotting, instead of making things plot convenient, you know?

So, in all, another failure in a year full of reading failures. I had high hopes cause this was my first request, but to be honest, I ended up reconsidering my decision of taking requests. I have two impending ones, but I don´t think I´ll be taking more in the future, cause I like to leave the decision of what I want to read to be solely on my hands.

As a word of advice for indie/self published authors asking for requests, consider offering and excerpt of your book instead of the whole book, so the reviewer can decide if they vibe with the story or not.

Thanks to Nathan on behalf of the author for this free copy on exchange of an honest review. All words and opinions are my own.

I want to thank the author, Sophie Gabrielle, for contacting me and gifting me with a copy of her debut book in exchange for an honest review.

3.75 stars.

“Then she grinned, her blue eyes alight. There was madness in that face, chaos unchained.”

Chaos Beckons was absolutely nothing like I was expecting. It was so much more than anything I had hoped for and expected from it.

My very first impression of it was that of a book that would be fun but nothing too surprising or deep. Just a nice book to entertain me for a while and that was that. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong.

The tale I was presented with was dark and bloody, unafraid to go dark places and explore the full psychology that would entail. A world filled with magic and dark secrets that will change it all coupled with complicate characters that are so fun to analyze and see their grayness in all its wonderful shades.

I was very pleasantly surprised with all the story did and the places it took me.

“No one got to reap this chaos. That was her job. She was in control of her own world and she would not allow all the work and pain and horror she had endured to be swallowed up in flames.”

First things first, I did have a bit of struggle with this book at the beginning.

The first arc of the story, though utterly necessary, just didn't interest me as much being slow and rather thick with everything that it was trying to build and set into motion. Sure, there was mystery, and I was interested in those parts, the only thing that kept me going, but it was not fleshed out enough and it never seemed to go anywhere.

We get a look into a restrictive atmosphere that clothed me and nearly smothered me. In hindsight, that is probably a very nice effect and it sets the story into motion on more levels than I realized at the time but, well, it did not make for a smooth, easy start.

Thankfully, I wouldn't say that took very long to be dealt with and the meat of the story to start taking place for real. It was a bit frustrating to get through but worth it, at the end of the day.

As I usually do, I tried to reflect and think if that slow beginning could have been avoided, and aside from a more dynamic writing and telling of it all I actually think it works well and is important and relevant for everything to be able to happen. There was no way around it.

“Don’t tell them. They don’t know we’re demons in disguise.”

The characters were so very interesting in their majority. I was utterly intrigued and loved their interactions and introspections so very much.

Venne was my favorite since the beginning and with every decision, he made that just cemented itself into my brain because he is so complicated and his mind space is fascinating. The way he sees the world and rationalizes things is the perfect level of morally ambiguous for me.

Not that moral ambiguity is something strange with these characters because I don't think they know how to do anything else.

Faith was another character that I enjoyed a lot to see, mostly for all the mystery surrounding her and I wish we had gotten more of her. As well as that we had gotten more of Xander and all his flashy outfits. I really don't think we got enough time to really get into either of them but the bits and pieces I saw have me enamored.

Emiil and Nadia were nice additions but they didn't enrapture me quite as much. Emiil is probably the character I enjoyed the least and he dragged a little for more. Too cliched, not in the nicest of ways, and, well, the odd one in this world.

As much as I wish I had gotten more into our protagonist I do think Nadia is quite the spit-fire and wild to take the ride with it wasn't till the end when I could connect with her more fully.

The one character with which I had a bit of a journey was Johanna since I felt very apathetic towards the wild girl at first but ended up really appreciating what she did and wanting to get to know her more deeply since I think she could be really fun to explore.

Still, I think this is only half the potential any of them is capable of and that we are gonna be able to really get them to shine when all things start devolving into true and utter chaos.

“She did what she liked in every aspect of her life, so why not this? Let them see her chaos, let them judge. She would continue to elude them.”

The world is such a fun one to explore!

Filled to the brim with dark secrets and untold cruelty every bend and crack is filled with more than it appears and quite the story. With cruel cults and lore from long ago. Gods and power that shall rule the world and impenetrable cycle of things to happen.

Prophecy and myth. Legend and raw power. Stories and facts. All intertwining to create the tapestry of the lives of our main three characters and help them decide fate with half learned truths and desperation.

I loved the twist that we are delivered at the end of the book because it made awful sense and was really rewarding to see. I'll already have suspected as much but actually seeing it play out was quite the experience. The way it changes everything and nothing at all is really quite wonderful.

The magic in the world was really rather simple but I liked the way it worked in symbiosis with everything else. For the rather complicated characters, we have had this part being simple was nice and I liked the dynamic of it all.

“But I am my misfortune. I am every horrible thing they’ve said, every bruise and scar they gave me, every rule I broke. I am all the trauma and terrors of my past in the flesh. How can I be more than that? How can I be anything but the sinner I was made to be?”

The way Gabrielle treated the trauma the characters have suffered was well handled and with much respect.

It depicts the struggles and ways different people might cope with hard situations with honesty and sincerity. With understanding and sensibility that was much appreciated.

Really, trauma is a rather centric part of the story and very involved in how things will develop. It is a fundamental part of the characters and influences their actions at every turn. Yet, having a moderately big cast allows seeing different coping mechanisms and how it doesn't affect anyone the same way.

The process of healing and piecing themselves back together after, the hard road to recovery, always makes for interesting character developments but being as integral as it was here it was doubled that because it was given time to be explored and see how things would affect them. It wasn't mentioned once and then forgotten or used only when it was convenient but rather was a reality that was always affecting them and that drove the plot and not the other way around.

“Always forwards. To the unknown. Never back.”

I would call this book heavy and dark and definitely not light reading material but something to be considered and prepared for. It does have action, here and there, that becomes messy and ruthless, but it is definitely not the focus point.

The psychology of it all is one thing that I will never be tired to see in books and will enjoy every time without fail.

I'm grateful to have been able to experience this book and see its wildness and chaos, its rawness, and bloodiness and now that even in cruel worlds there's a ray of hope and trauma is not all there is to life.

“Let us be kings and queens of our own chaos, Venne thought. For once, let us write the story.”
______________

This was so much fun!

I was expecting something completely different when I first picked the book and was promptly blown away by just what I found. Truly an amazing read and super enjoyable.

The fact that there's a sequel makes me really happy because I need more of these messy characters and situations.

Now, I just hope that this review will flow faster than most of the reviews this year has given me.

______________

This book sounds so interesting! Like the perfect mix of dark mystery that I always love. That cover is just improving that by being kinda gory and a bit weird.

I don't, it just sounds like a lot of disturbing things are going on here but, at the same time, I have this tiny feeling like it's geared to a younger audience than I originally would think by the synopsis. Hmm, It's a weird combination of feelings that just makes me more and more curious.

I am absolutely honored to be reading this book upon request and super excited. I wasn't planning to read anything new right now but I just couldn't help myself.

"It was as if she were inside his body, inhabiting all the empty spaces, plucking his nerves and joints like a lute for her own amusement."

ৡ 1. Characters
At first, I was really liking the characters and honestly rooting for them when we first met them. Their whole situation was so intriguing, being in an ultra-religious cult of sorts. Then, they started to get on my nerves. Their attitude and actions reeeeally started to annoy me.

They'd argue, they'd clash, they'd hate each other one moment and love each other the next, and not in the fun way. I had a hard time understanding the motivations behind any of their moves. Especially with Venne and Nadia's bond - why on earth would Nadia pick the worst of two options. The only characters I didn't hate completely were Xander and Emiil.

VENNE WAS SO TERRIBLE OH MY GOSH. His emotions and feelings for Nadia were so fickle (especially when the mf princess was in the room), then when he wasn't getting her complete devotion (which he DIDN'T EARN IN ANY WAY), he got mad when her other 'husband' was there for her. Complete ass.

"I am more than the sum of my misfortune."

ৡ 2. Plot
The plot was kiiiinda all over the place. There was never a clear end-goal in mind, which was kind of unmotivating to read about. Our cast of main characters had a goal for about 30% of the book, and once they achieved that, they were kind of just wandering around aimlessly.

It was pretty hard to get through, and the action only picked up in the last few chapters, which was a little irritating.

The settings did feel very detached, and I wasn't really clear on the surroundings and place our characters were in for most of the book. It wasn't easy to imagine them at all, and that was another thing that made it hard to read.

"Ah, but I have had years to hone the art of being a smug bastard."

ৡ 3. Prose
I did love the prose - the descriptive language in this one was gorgeous - but I did happen upon a few typos and grammatical errors. You can definitely tell when a writer loves their story and puts all the effort they can muster into it, which was true in this case!

The descriptive language was pretty impressive, but it tended to not have much substance to it, sadly.

ৡ 4. Final Thoughts
I'm so happy to finally be done with this, but I can say I am happy to have read this ARC. Again, thank you so much to Sophie Gabrielle and her team for reaching out and providing me with a e-copy of Chaos Beckons.

I love when, as a reader, I can tell the author poured their heart and soul into their story and characters. This was definitely the case with Sophie Gabrielle’s Chaos Beckons, an emotional, action-packed debut from start to finish. I fell in love with the characters and their journeys in chapter one, and my attachment only grew as I continued reading. Theirs is the kind of story in which you can’t wait to see what happens next, even if you know it will be painful (and believe me, it was) because you’re hoping the characters who have endured so much will get their happy endings. While this book ended with more cliffhangers than resolutions, it made for a fantastic start to a new series that will leave you wanting more.

Nadia, Venne, and Emiil are such interesting and flawed protagonists with distinct POVs. Their nuances made me want to cheer for them one moment, hug them the next, and shout at them in frustration another. Nadia and Venne’s chemistry was apparent from the start, and I loved seeing their romance develop as the book went on. While it was clear they loved one another, the realization that they wanted different things and did not share the same views made their relationship feel layered and realistic. And poor Emiil… I’m hoping my interpretations were correct and he’ll ultimately get a HEA with a certain princely someone… but with everything that happened in this book, I don’t think any character will safe in the sequel.

I loved learning about the magic system and religion/lore of the world alongside the characters; it made the worldbuilding feel natural with the flow of the story. The expansion of the world led to the introduction of some intriguing side characters, most of whom I’m still not sure 100% I can trust. Just when I would think I had them figured out, in particular a scheming duke and a powerful royal, they would do something to surprise me, making me feel just as conflicted as Nadia, Venne, and Emiil. Lastly, the action scenes in this book are very well written and will have you on the edge of your seat.

I would have liked a little more backstory on Nadia, Venne, Emiil, and their families and relationships in/with the village at the start of the book. For me, this would have further emphasized the contrasts (and comparisons) to their new lives after their escape and amplified the emotions they felt looking back on the trauma they endured. Still, the book’s overall theme of, in the words of the author, “the perception of freedom” is poignantly explored, and I have a feeling more secrets will be revealed in book #2, Chaos Lies.

I’d recommend this book for older YA readers and fans of YA and NA looking for a dark, emotional, and creative new series. I’m very much looking forward to the next book!

It was a different light, a different world altogether. Perhaps the stars would be in different patterns, the heavens shifted so they could be wherever they wanted. Nothing was ruled here. She was finally free.

'you're you' Theo said, as if it were an obvious answer. 'There's nothing else to be'

So my Wonderful Friend Sophie did the thing, the incredible thing, and wrote a book.
I'm so proud of this accomplishment, and it would be Really Cool if y'all could check out her book on Amazon. Please support. Thanks and love you all

TL;DR: A great introduction for a fantasy series, following different and well-developed characters. Intricate politics and magic, as well as plot and world-building. This book was a solid 4 stars for me, and I would absolutely love to continue with this series and see where it all goes and why certain things are happening, as I believe it can only get better from here. Maybe a tad too long, and some details could have been cut out, but a good story nonetheless that I do recommend. It tackles mental and physical abuse, so be wary of this.

This book really hooked me from the beginning!
Nadia, Emiil, Venne, Johanna, and Xander as well as Faith, were all intricate and multifaceted characters that you get to know slowly and understand on a deeper level, each one with their flaws and virtues.
The story in itself is surrounded by mystery as we follow our main characters Nadia, Emiil and Venne as they are all bound to be wedded to each other on the completion of their 18th birthday, and this has been the tradition for as long as they can remember. Secluded in a village that no one has ever stepped foot outside of, they know nothing else but prayers, weddings, bearing children and respecting their elders and their gods. But here comes the rebel in Nadia, who has endured both physical and mental health abuse, and she is not to be confined and tamed any longer, let alone told who and when she will marry! She did remind me a bit of Joan of Arc.

Those three together will discover and start something that will change their lives and probably the lives of those in the village as they know it. Secrets are uncovered, battles are to be fought, and a new world is discovered, as well as their characters develop, as things get messier and literally the chaos befalls around them and throws new challenges in their way. Without spoiling the new world behind the walls of their village has a lot to offer, but is it really as good as it appears, and what other secrets are yet to be unburied is to be seen, and I am all here for it!

The magic system was interesting; it gave off Shadow Hunter’s vibes with the runes, which I liked.
I really appreciated the writing style; it was easy to follow, and you can tell that this story is very close to the author’s heart, for the way she is describing certain scenes and how very well her characters are crafted. The whole plot to me was intriguing and kept me wanting to know more, and what is really going on and why. We do get answers to some questions, and more questions resurface as we go on. The last few chapters really left me wondering where the story will go from now and what is going to happen to our protagonists.

This said, there were times when I found we deviated from the main point of the story, and a lot was going on, but nothing really important that contributed to the plot. It isn’t anything major, but I think this book could have been a tad shorter and would have had a bigger impact had we concentrated more on the important things of the story. I understand this is a series, so maybe this was done on purpose, but I personally would have enjoyed it more had some things been trimmed and left out. There was the chosen one vibe, too, and the strong and independent FMC, which nothing wrong with that, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the other books and what will happen to their complicated relationship!

I also think that this is the type of series that gets better with each book, as there is still a lot to be covered and discovered!

Not going to spoil anything even though there are things I would love to share haha

Regardless, this was a solid 4-star read for me that I highly recommend if you are looking to read something that will keep you hooked and glued to the pages. Be wary that there are some difficult scenes about physical abuse, so if this triggers you, keep this in mind. It is not a lot, but still worth mentioning.

This was a belated ARC read for me, and I really enjoyed it! Chaos Beckons kicks off a four-book fantasy series filled with adventure, morally grey characters, and a touch of romance. Originally published in 2020, the first two books were recently re-edited and republished, making it a great time to dive in.

With a fierce FMC, a world of war, gods, and shifting allegiances, the story kept me engaged throughout. The romance is passionate but not overly explicit, with just one fade-to-black scene near the end - though I do wish it had been a bit spicier! 🌶️😏 It had a little bit of everything - heartbreak, magic, self-discovery, betrayal, and an explosive ending! 💥

Overall, this was a dramatic yet compelling read with a good mix of action, intrigue, and character growth. I always love when a book has more than one POV, and this one delivers with a triple POV narrative. I’m looking forward to seeing where the series goes next! ⚔️

I had a hard time rating this, but I think it’s somewhere around 4 ⭐️’s for me 🤔

Chaos Beckons is one of those books that starts off unsettling in all the right ways. A village trapped in fake paradise, creepy forced marriages, and a goddess cult? Yep, I was hooked. Nadia, the main character, is rebellious, blunt, and constantly challenging the system and even though she’s not always easy to like, I really appreciated her fire.

The story takes its time building up the world and characters, which worked for me, though I know some people might want things to move faster. The relationships are more slow-burn. There's also a lot of mystery sprinkled in secrets about the village, their past, and the world outside the walls that slowly unravel as the story goes on.

If you're into dark fantasy with cults, queerness, big twists, and characters trying to take back control of their lives definitely give this one a shot.

I don't normally write reviews, but I was approached by the author and asked if I'd like to read an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review, and I couldn't have been happier to try this book out! 😊 It's hard to really put into words how it made me feel, but everything from the characters and setting, to the detailed prose and vivid worldbuilding grabbed me and never let go. All I would say is that if the blurb catches your eye, then definitely give this a shot.

I do agree with some of the other reviews that the intro is a bit slow and doesn't really capture the mood of the rest of the book, but if you stick with it, then it's a wild ride and one I'd absolutely recommend!

Thank you again to Sophie Gabrielle for the ARC copy and trusting me with her work 💜

When I accepted the review copy, I was excited, but the trigger warnings mentioned by Sophie Gabrielle in one of the reviews made me take a pause. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to handle the mental turmoil of the characters which was a result of long-term abuse. I cautiously began this journey, determined that the minute it got too much for me I'd stop, but it never reached that point.

The book was beautifully written. Difficult themes were explored with a lot of sensitivity and care. The characters had depth; they were by no means perfect, but that's what made them relatable. Their development from the way they were at the beginning of the book to the transition that occurred gradually by the end was explored well.

“I am more than the sum of my misfortunes" One of the most touching lines of the book; I had to stop and breathe for a few minutes because it deeply resonated with me. The dialogues flowed naturally, and the author had done a great job capturing every character's emotions.

While Nadia seemed to be the central character that everyone revolved around, my personal favourites were Emiil and Johanna. I loved Emiil's vulnerability and simplicity, while Johanna was brave despite the loss she suffered. I hope to see more of them in the coming books, and I'm kind of more inclined towards a relationship between Emiil and Theo.

The pacing of the book was great at the start; it had a lot of action. But I felt that the minute the characters were introduced to Faith, there was a lull in the storyline. The fights and conversations felt a bit repetitive regarding their status as Gods, the motives of every other person, the games that people were playing. Then it picked up again towards the end, and I was relieved.

The twist at the end was unexpected and amazing. Now that everyone is divided, I'm eager to see their dynamics in the next book. I also have questions regarding the village they left and the shocking discovery they had made early on.

Overall, this was an awesome read, and I recommend it to all fantasy lovers who enjoy books with secrets and hidden agendas, imperfect yet relatable characters, politics and some fighting - verbal and physical.

Thank you to Nathan |Blorko for sending me this eARC!

.☘︎ ݁˖I absolutely devoured this book! I am a sucker for triple POV. Nadia, Emille, and Venne where the perfect main characters.

⭒❃.✮:▹UNIQUE⭒❃.✮:▹
.☘︎ ݁˖Usually when I read some of these fantasy books, it gets repetitive. I feel like a lot of authors piggyback off of what's getting attention in the fantasy world at that moment. I for this author. This book is something like I've never read before. It is all unique and I fell in love with the world from Chaos Beckens.

⭒❃.✮:▹PLOT⭒❃.✮:▹
.☘︎ ݁˖I LOVE LOVE LOVED the plot. Chaos was definitely always there, so the title for this book is fitting! I love that the MFC sticks to her gut and stays defiant. Also the arranged marriage trope was phenomenal a long with the fact that there were three people involved.

⭒❃.✮:▹OTHER⭒❃.✮:▹
.☘︎ ݁˖Venne is my favorite character and I'm in love. I connected well with every character and I could tell the author poured her heart into this book.

Thank you to Sophie Gabrielle for providing me with an eARC of 'Chaos Beckons' in exchange for an honest review.

Chaos Beckons offers an interesting concept and a world that shows clear ambition. I was hooked to the world building. The writing style and atmosphere stood out to me, too. Although, I personally struggled to connect with the pacing and characters as much as I hoped to. Overall, it's a story with strong ideas that will likely draw in a bigger crowd and glowing reviews once it's better known.

Happy Reading

I didn't expect Sophie Gabrielle's Chaos Beckons, Book 1 of her Chaos Chronicles series, to have such a profound impact on me. I felt like the story touched my very own soul, made me question, made me think about life experiences, past and future trauma and all the ways we as humans deal with it. I believe it is safe to say that our responses are as numerous and diverse as our souls and minds are. Is there even a "proper" response to a traumatic event?

Sophie dives deep into the brightest and darkest depths of one's soul, weaving a tale that intertwines pain, hurt, loss, tragedy, friendship, love, and coping mechanisms, all within a tapestry of emotions so raw and real it will make your heart bleed. And mine sure did...

I felt connected to the characters, Venne, Nadia, Emiil, Johanna, even Faith, Theo, and Xander. In my mind, they all represented some form of a tortured soul, each haunted by their own personal demons. Did I agree with each step they took? And was each step of each person morally white? No, but that was the point, wasn't it? Not everyone will react the way we want them to, and they shouldn't. Who am I to judge each person's mishaps and their coping mechanisms? I can only acknowledge them and try to see the bigger picture.

Was Venne right to follow the path he'd chosen? Was Nadia right to be "selfish" in her choices? Was Emiil right to want something for himself? Was Johanna right to deal with the heartbreak the way she did? I am not sure. What I know is that these characters came from a traumatic life to a whole new world, seemingly offering them freedom and choices. But was it all just another form of a gilded cage?

Emiil and Johanna became my two favorite people, and I root for them to find their inner peace and to discover what happiness is to them. Nadia is the one to keep in mind, as I think she will shine in future instalments. And Venne? Hard to say without spoiling the plot, so I will only say we are yet to see what his final choice and stand will be. And with whom?

Chaos Beckons is a story that needs to be read and experienced. I am honored to have been one of the ARC readers, and can't wait to continue this journey.

I was very kindly sent a copy of this book; my opinions are my own.

To start, I was a bit daunted by the length, and I'll admit the initial bits in the village drag somewhat. Things pick up afterwards, and especially once you reach the city and its machinations, where our three protagonists' inner demons surge to the surface. And that ending? SHUT UP.

World: is incredible. We only skim the surface in the first book but it lays down the foundations and introduces factions, making you want to keep reading. It's a bit like the initial Song of Ice and Fire worldbuilding before it became a rambly mess.

Main characters: Venne and Emiil bore me to absolute tears, however they ARE necessary to see this world as a whole, because each shows us one reflection of it.

Emiil is who I'd classify as Good, but this goodness comes with blinders, which hinder him.

Venne is the closest to Draco Malfoy as I can come up with in terms of description, unhealthily possessive (dude you knew from the start there would be TWO of you husbands, you cannot be serious), and my gosh someone shave his head already. Because one more repeat of 'his hair fell into his eyes' and I'd have screamed LOL.

Of them all, Nadia is my favourite. Emiil wants her because he probably thinks he can save her; Venne wants to possess her. But she longs for freedom and being her own person, and while often absurd, she seems to be the only one who sees their new reality clearly.

Side characters: there's a bunch and we'll hopefully learn more in following books. Xander is my favourite, I feel he could be good for Nadia if she let him, but he has plenty ??? of his own. Johanna flits in and our of the story as she feels like, and Faith is someone I have so many questions about.

Religion: I normally don't touch this with a ten foot pole, but as it's a core feature of the story I felt I should. There definitely seems to be more going on than any of our Seeds know, and as a reader I am DYING to learn. The statues and beating hearts? The magical powers? Laastra?? Nadia surviving that blast of light?

While the start of this felt slow, the momentum picks up as the world is revealed, and I feel like further books will greatly benefit from this. The writing is gripping, visceral and not at all flowery, with just enough description to hook you but not enough to bore. All in all, huge 5 of 5 stars out of me, and I can't wait to read the second book.

PS: if Xander turns out to be Arthai in disguise I will LOSE IT in the best of ways. HA.

I don’t write a lot of reviews but this book is fantastic. I can’t wait for people to read it because I have a feeling I could get into some fun debates over the characters and what’s going to happen.

BEGINNING
Even though I really like the cover, I don’t think it matches the vibes of this book. It starts off strong with action but still builds the character’s relationships and gives evidence of why they are the way they are. I find a lot of authors who start the story fast make you just accept things about the characters but this author is able to both in this book.

POV
Many books that have mixed point of views are separated by like chapter so you only get one side of a situation before it moves on to the next. You also have to suffer through the POVs you don’t like to get to the ones you do. I love the mix of point of views within the chapter of this book. It adds layers to each scene and really makes it more interesting. I mostly listened to the book and it was easy for me to follow along with the point of views. If you don’t read as often or aren’t a strong reader, I don’t recommend listening to it - but if you read it, you should be good.

CHARACTERS
It’s really interesting to see how all these different characters try to move forward from the trauma they experienced. None of the characters are fully good or evil either. This makes it easier to relate to characters and root for all of them at different times while also still trying to be like who is on the right side??? I am hoping for more character development on the MFC. I like her but to me she contradicts herself and I am hoping she comes into her own.

THE ADVENTURE
The adventure these characters go through is my favorite part. It jumps off at the beginning and does not stop. You get a lot of information but there are still some mysteries. The story keeps evolving but it doesn’t feel dragged out. I’ve only finished the first book but it seems like one of those series where you can create a bunch of spinoffs books. I am a series hopper. I rarely continue to the second or third book but I could not wait to start the second.

This book starts off in a place that looks like paradise but is actually a seriously restrictive village (think cult). We follow Nadia, who is constantly fighting against the rules, especially the whole mandatory marriage thing that kicks in when she turns 18. She knows she can't stay in a place built on oppression and endless worship.

So Nadia decides she is out. She plans for a desperate escape from the compound and for reasons you have to read to understand but she ends up bringing along the guys who are supposed to become her husbands. (Yup, there’s two of em) 😄 When they finally look beyond the village walls, they then realize the stakes are even higher than they thought and the world is nothing like the stories they were told.

It’s a slow burn for sure but character build is intense. So kudos on that!

This didn't work for me the way I was hoping it would. The premise sounded promising, and I went in hoping to love it, but that was unfortunately not the case. I didn't connect to any of the characters or the story, and I struggled to keep the POVs straight as it often switched rather abruptly in the middle of a chapter.

I encourage anyone who is interested to give it a chance. It wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't for me.

✨ An absolutely wild, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride. ✨

Chaos Beckons is the kind of book that grabs you by the throat from page one and doesn’t let go. Sophie Gabrielle has crafted a lush, gritty world filled with danger, mystery, and just the right amount of heartbreak. This is the start of something epic, and I’m already obsessed.

The story revolves around three unforgettable characters: Nadia, the fiery, determined heroine trying to navigate a world stacked against her; Venne, the charmingly sinister enigma who constantly keeps you guessing; and Emiil, whose quiet strength and devotion will steal your heart. The tension between them—emotional, political, and maybe even romantic—is a tightly wound thread that drives the story forward. Their individual goals constantly clash and intersect in ways that left me biting my nails.

Gabrielle’s world-building is immersive without ever feeling overwhelming. The atmosphere is dark and evocative, with settings that seem to pulse with life (and secrets). You’ll feel like you’re right there in the thick of it, experiencing every twist, every betrayal, and every stolen moment of hope.

The plot is relentless. Just when you think you’ve found your footing, the ground shifts beneath you. Gabrielle’s pacing is masterful, balancing high-stakes action with quieter, emotionally charged moments that pack just as much of a punch. By the time I hit the final page, I was absolutely reeling.

And the romance? Let’s just say Gabrielle knows how to write chemistry that sizzles while keeping you hanging on for more. It’s the perfect blend of tension, uncertainty, and oh no, I’m invested.

If you’re looking for a fantasy debut that will make you laugh, cry, and gasp (sometimes all in the same chapter), Chaos Beckons is for you. This book delivers complex characters, an unpredictable plot, and a world you won’t want to leave. I cannot wait to see where Gabrielle takes this story next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (with extra stars for keeping me up all night!)

Chaos Beckons is the kind of book that sinks its claws into you from page one and doesn’t let go. Sophie Gabrielle masterfully weaves an eerie, atmospheric tale that is equal parts beautiful and unsettling. The prose is lyrical yet razor-sharp, pulling you into a world where reality and the uncanny blur in the most intoxicating way.

When we meet Nadia, Emiil and Venne we are swept into a new world where we learn not all is it seems. Soon we see them be swept away into a new world - where they learn of their true selves. The decisions they make and how they pursue who they are and their core valeus will have you on the edge of the seat.

Highly recommend! This is an amazing start to a series and when it kicks into gear you will be hooked.

Chaos Beckons

Finally! I'm finally finished despite all the detours and interruptions. So when I first started this book, it gave me the feel of an epic story from India, done in fantasy. I do read a lot of New Adult series (and single volumes), but usually they're more Urban Fantasy or Western European-based, so this was very refreshing. It's one of the few fantasy series not based on Western European culture and is not Urban Fantasy - I like both, but this caught my attention because it was neither. While the beginning did start out a bit slow for me, it immediately engaged me with a mysterious atmosphere that had me wondering about this small village with it's rituals and apparently abusive attitude toward their young, primarily, but toward anyone who steps out of line set by their village 'elders.

The protagonist Nadia, Emiil, & Venne at first blush struck me as snotty teens (ok later I find out they're 18, which is technically an adult - I live in California (US) - but their attitudes are pretty immature. Then again, it's been a very long time since I was 18, but I'm pretty sure I had many immature moments as well. At that moment, however, the only one I really liked was Emiil. Joanne (a supporting character) was annoying to me, just in a different light. She's that character who doesn't care what's happening as long as it doesn't intrude on her having a good time.

It gets even more mysterious when a mysterious place in the village is discovered (I think it was Venne who discovered it, though in hindsight, I'm wondering how many others before them discovered that particular secret) and shown to the other new adults, exposing a hinted-at lie the village elders have been feeding everyone. At this point, I'm wondering if this story is going to be a transformation of the village by the end of it. And I'm still trying to figure out what's really going on, I'd half expected a murder mystery to be entwined into the tapestry.

Then the protagonists and a few of their friends escape, which has me raising an eyebrow because it took a turn I hadn't expected, but I was gleefully delighted by it because it meant my guess about where the story was going wasn't correct yet. Believe me, a lot of times I can't resist a tiny peek at the latter half of a book just to get a better idea ahead of time, but this one made me want to follow the journey right along with the characters without indulging in my impatience to know more. (Yes, I can be one of 'those' people from time to time)

My next guess was it was sort of like a fantasy version of 'lost in the wilderness & survival' type of story, again I had it wrong because not too long after they escape being chased, they fall to the misfortune of slavers, which eventually led to Nadia (and Venne) discovering powers of magic. At this point, I think Emiil hasn't discovered his own magic yet, though I could be wrong.

What interested me was that right before they escaped, they were 'married' to each other (yes, all three of them, and at this point I'm thinking a poly relationship, which had me smiling because I actually do like stories with that element) in a time-honored ritual performed by an elder. Apparently, all the newly adult people are married off once they reach the age of 18. This has alarm bells going off in my head because none of the three really seems to get on much with each other. That and the protagonist are the only three with 3 people being married to each other because their generation has an odd number of peers of the same age. Which had me wondering why the heck a mass marriage was taking place. Now I'm really intrigued. As I said, Emiil was the most likable of the characters. Perhaps it's just that he was quieter and introspective than the others, but I also thought him more mature in attitude as well. Then again, the village shaped them each in a variety of ways. Nadia, I felt empathy most for because of what her family and strangers put her through and the way they treated her. I could see why she became abrasive in her rebellion against the village. Venne to me was just a complete horse's backside. I felt nothing but exasperation and irritation in his selfish and arrogant attitude. By the end of the book, you see a little more of his internal conflicts, and yet he still remains arrogant and selfish.

Bear with me, this is why I chose to hide this due to spoilers; there's quite a bit to unpack. The kids (yes, it's just easier for me to say kids, though they are 18, because to me 18 is still a kid in many ways) get rescued, and we get to meet more characters. I understood the suspicious attitude they had toward Xander, Theo, & the first strange people they've met after the slavers, who are the first experience they have with people outside their village. But neither Venne nor Nadia ever fully trust and acts like complete twats every chance they get. Emiil and Joanna, on the other hand, actually seem to be less abrasive and, while cautious, are at least willing to listen and observe with an open mind. Well, ok, Joanna's attitude is all about partying, actually, but at least she's not outwardly hostile. I suspect she has hidden depths.

About 3/4 into the book, I'm starting to wonder just what Xavier & the Princess are up to. What political game are they actually playing? Mind you, I'm still following along in the journey without taking a peek, even at this point. There's a major twist at the end that both escalates the story and enhances it further, making me very eager to read the next volume. I may have to pause to finish a library borrow but I'm definitely looking forward to reading book two.

For me (keep in mind I'm not much of a critical reader, thus easy to please) it's past 5 stars because it kept my interest without triggering my impatience to know 'now'. Excellent Job to Ms. Gabrielle. Let's say 9 of 5 stars in my honest opinion. I couldn't say 10 because the beginning did take a moment to engage me but once I started, I didn't want to stop.

Wow that turned into a story I was not expecting! If you like fantasy stories with magic, fae/elf-like beings, violence and honestly deep characters I highly recommend you pick this book up.

Right off the hop I will warn you, there are a few spots that can be awkward simply because of the structure.
I wish the 3 person POV was better divided up. I think some type of paragraph divider or symbol would do wonders for cementing each separate character’s viewpoint only because at the beginning it was quite difficult to register when you were viewing a new character’s thoughts.
Aside from that, minor sentence structure or misspelled words distract momentarily but if you’re not afraid of being a discerning reader and are able to see beyond that, this is a really unique story that’s worth it. Just needs another round of editing.

I love how the first couple of chapters were short and dove right into the story with no long prefaces of its history. It’s clever for drawing you into the world when you feel like you’re flying through the book but still have questions that are being explored in each next chapter. The world unfolds itself around our characters as they progress rapidly through their journey and you still don’t know everything about their history, leaving a little mystery.

And speaking of the characters, I was really impressed by everyone’s dynamic style. Nadia felt quite real to me, fiery and cunning but also reserved and hindered by her emotions. You feel her constant struggle. Venne and Emiil are excellent foils for each other, especially with their limited perspectives of each other. Seeing the other as pathetic or only a power hungry monster vs how they each acknowledge their own issues but have so many more reasons and meaning behind each action.
Even all the minor and side characters are compelling. The mystery behind ones you don’t know the thoughts of and just hearing snippets of their stories is intriguing. Also, gotta say, I know there was no explicit mention of a romance between Theo and Xander but I am desperately hoping those two got some intense awesome history.

This story doesn’t shy away from its own dark side. It’s bloody, it’s messy and it deals with actual consequences. Which makes the entire setting and message become even more vivid and real. The descriptions alone of the scenery, setting and people paint a very clear image. I can entirely envision the cold, white palace with its pink tinged waters and gold finery.

Each new development in the book is intriguing, nothing ever lagged for me. The only issue perhaps is when sudden events occur, the story was already moving at such a fast pace I stumbled at those big developments. One minute our characters are discussing something amongst themselves and the next a major event causing bodily harm to someone is happening with no outside lead up for the reader. In a way, you are entirely in the character’s perspective because you feel just as jarred as they must feel.

After reading those last few chapters I have to say I’m deeply curious about the next instalment in this series. What a twist!
Unique, character driven and real. Way better than certain popular romantasy series out there (cough cough Crescent City cough cough).

I got this book as an ARC copy for my honest review, and thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book. But unfortunately, this book was definitely not for me.

I don’t like writing hate reviews or any negative reviews. But as this was an ARC I do need to write a review. Keep in mind that this is totally my opinion and you may feel differently as many people do seem to like the book.

⚠️minor spoilers ahead⚠️

First of all I feel like this book would’ve been so much better as a first person POV.

The beginning of the book was amazing, it hooked me from the start and I loved the story and where it was going. But then it lost me about 50 pages into the book. Ever since after they escaped it got really boring to me, and some things felt completely unnecessary.

And one thing that completely threw me off was that they forced THREE 18 year olds to get married and eternally bound to each other. I’m sorry but that did not do it for me. Speaking of, the romance in this book was really not my cup of tea. Like I don’t love love triangles, but I do like some of them. But this one really didn’t do it for me. I also felt like the romance was really rushed, while most of the book went really slowly. I feel like the romance had a lot more potential.

And one thing that made a big difference in my rating were the characters. Most of the characters in the book felt so stupid. Like I get they were kept from the world in a maniac cult and shit. But it just felt like they were really stupid and shallow.

Again this is completely my opinion, and I sincerely hope if you read this book, you will enjoy it more than I did.

Enjoy 😘

Thank you for the ARC copy of this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is in third person POV, which I’m normally not a fan of, but it really didn’t bother me with this one. The world building was perfect in this. There was just enough to give you an image in your mind but not too much that the story was lost in scenery. There is some gore with fights but nothing that is over the top.

I felt a lot of emotions from betrayal to wonder to lust to rage.
Nadia is beyond headstrong when it comes to her freedom and I honestly would be too! The mystery behind what happened to loved ones on top of what’s going on with the gods and what’s happening to them is wild.

This is definitely a slow burn that gave me whiplash from the back and forth. Fighting feelings for one another even though they could feel each other through the bond. One minute stepping forward and getting lost in the moment to pulling back immediately.

Quite a few times I giggled at characters and what they were saying. Some other characters are super suspicious and I can’t wait to see what their motives are bc something just doesn’t quite sit right.

It doesn’t leave you on a cliffhanger BUT you know it’s about to go down and instant makes you run for the second book in the series. What happens?? I need to know!

I definitely enjoyed this book and would recommend it to all who love fantasy, adventure, romance, and personal growth journeys.

I liked how quickly we got into some of the world building and main traits of the main characters, but I had a hard time picturing the setting besides the forest. So although I loved the pacing of how it got right into the action, I think it would have been helpful to establish the setting a bit more initially. Like, the inner thoughts of the POVs do a good job of showing the brainwashing, but it would be cool for the atmosphere to feel kind of creepily cult-y, too.

I also kept wondering why the three main characters didn’t seem to hardly know
Each other when they grew up in the same village and were the same age. Are boys and girls kept isolated from each other? I really didn’t get a great idea of the setup of the village or day-to-day activities.

I think each main character had a good amount of balanced strengths and weaknesses, although I didn’t really read a difference in voice in their POV chapters.

I was REALLY into the plot of the last 10% of the book, but I think there could have been more concrete sorts of definitions of gods/discussions of levels of belief to make the religious aspect of the story more layered and interesting.

📕 Thank you so much to Nathan and Sophie Gabrielle for the gifted copy of this book!
